Determining the Meaning of Psychic Symbols

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I’ve been searching for a site that offers interpretations for visions. Sometimes a slide show will dominate my field of vision. Usually my eyes are momentarily closed when this happens, like when I’m brushing my teeth or showering. This has happened a handful of times in my life, and my most recent experience is puzzling. It was a cup and saucer, and a pot poured the cup full of black coffee. It looked like a commercial. In trying to figure out what coffee means, I’ve guessed that it’s a stimulant. Coffee isn’t my cup of tea, but I do drink it away from home. My late father was an avid coffee drinker. I’m stumped as to what this vision might be showing to me, and searched for a site that lists the meanings of certain symbols. I’ve visited a local psychic and her interpretations are often strange to me. Are psychic symbols personal or universal? Can this be taught? I read your article on developing your ability to have visions and found it very helpful. Thank you.

Eileen

Dear Eileen:

The intellectual interpretation of psychic visions is more complex than one might assume because we are in constant interaction with all sorts of subtle influences on an unconscious level. It’s therefore wise to finely develop our intuitive faculties, but more on that in a moment.

The meanings of symbols in dreams and psychic visions are indeed ultimately personal. This is confusing because there are some symbols that are nearly universal and many that are natural given our cultural conditioning. For example, nearly everyone would interpret a smiling face to represent happiness and a frowning face to represent displeasure. In the U.S., most people would interpret a green traffic light to mean ‘go.’

In this article, I’ll refer to the model of the psyche developed by Carl Jung because his terms are so well known. Imagine that our minds are composed of three different aspects: the conscious (that which we are aware of), the personal unconscious (that which we have personally experienced but are not currently conscious of), and the collective unconscious, which is like the personal unconscious expanded to include all of humanity throughout time. I would expand this further to include all that is, has been and ever could be. Having a psychic vision is like the conscious mind receiving a message from the personal or collective unconscious.

To determine the meaning of a dream or psychic vision, I believe in beginning with the personal, for this usually eliminates a lot of fishing around. Thus the first things I would ask someone having your vision is what associations they have with coffee, and what feelings this vision evokes for them.

You have already done this and come up with your father, which explains why he may use this particular image to try to get your attention. Someone else may associate coffee with waking up, in which case such a vision could be a prompt from Spirit to ‘wake up and pay attention.’ Yet another person could be hunting for a job and see this image because they’re being guided to apply at a company related to the coffee industry, or perhaps they’ve been praying to find a soul mate, and this is a sign that they’ll meet the one they’re looking for in a coffee shop.

Once you’ve identified your own personal associations with a vision, ask yourself how it makes you feel. There is always some emotional charge to a psychic vision, so if it feels utterly flat, it may not be a meaningful psychic vision at all. Even when such visions have a strong emotional kick to them, there may not be a meaningful purpose behind them for you. This is where we get into the subtle influences that can complicate the whole matter.

One of the first things to rule out when you’re spontaneously hit with a psychic impression is the possibility that you’ve simply wandered into a thought form. Two of the most common places I always encounter thought forms is on bridges and airplanes. I will be about to cross a bridge when suddenly I have visions of the car going over the side accompanied by a wave of fear. Similarly, I’ll be taking off in an airplane when I’m suddenly hit by thoughts of crashing.

These are not my own phobias. For one thing, I never give these matters a second thought when I’m not in those situations, and for another, once I remind myself that these aren’t my own thoughts and feelings and I disengage from them, they completely disappear.

Just as houses have a certain feeling to them, so do places and things like air planes. When we approach a bridge, we have to travel through a space that is full of the fearful thoughts and energies of all the people who have traveled there before us who are afraid of going over the side. Similarly, air planes carry lots of fearful thought forms and energies. People who are sensitive naturally pick up on these, where others remain unaffected.

It’s also possible that you’re picking up on another person’s desire for coffee. You mentioned that you usually have this vision while you’re showering or brushing your teeth. If your spouse or another person you’re close to is craving his first cup of coffee or even drinking it downstairs in the kitchen, you could pick up on it, especially if they really love their coffee, for this would give the idea lots of energy.

I believe we can even pick up TV and radio transmissions, so the fact that this vision looks like a commercial is interesting. It’s possible that you’re tuning in to a certain commercial showing on TV even when your TV is off or tuned to a different station. Many people have had the experience of hearing a certain song in their heads only to turn the radio on and discover that song is playing.

So given all of these possibilities, how do you determine what this vision means for you? Since you associate the coffee with your father and he is in the Spirit world, I would assume that this is a nudge to try to get your attention. It’s probably not a message in and of itself, but more like a spirit calling card. To determine what he’s trying to tell you, you’ll have to wake up and start paying attention on a subtle psychic level when you receive this prompt.

To confirm that this is him, you can also ask for him to nudge you in a different but particular way. For example, I always know that my grandmother is trying to get my attention when I notice images of her house and yard running through the back of my mind. You can pick something that you strongly associate with your father and mentally ask that he use that image to get your attention.

Once you’ve been nudged, you’ll have to step things up in terms of using your psychic faculties to determine the message coming your way. It’s also important to realize that there may not be any grand message, for often spirits just want us to know that they are sending us love from beyond. To open up to deeper messages, you might meditate and open your heart to hear whatever spirit is trying to tell you, or journal on the vision and see where that leads you.

To move beyond the level of brief, cryptic, spontaneous visions, further psychic development is essential. By developing a strong relationship with your spirit guides and controlled use of all your psychic senses, you can cultivate the power to shift into a state of consciousness where all you have to do is ask for more information and it will come to you. To begin this journey, I recommend you find a local Spiritualist Church where you can join a development circle or ask the minister for other local resources.

Tired Sensitive is Overwhelmed by Voices and Visions

Dear Soul Arcanum:

When I go to bed at night and close my eyes, I see many people. For a long time I’d see a random stranger’s face while falling asleep. This went on for years, and then over the last year it has escalated. Now when I go to sleep, if it’s not faces, it’s voices. I hear people talking and having conversations. One night I heard two men having an in depth conversation about old cars. I don’t know these voices. I’ve moved out of town into a rural setting, and I live alone. Usually these conversations are boring and I feel like I’m wasting my energy with all of this. When this happens, I do something I learned in a meditation class: I ground myself and ask everyone to leave. This helps but it is getting harder and harder to do. Last night, I saw a man I’ve never seen before. He was looking at me and smiling at me. He was all in white, like a white robe with a white thing around his head. Why is this happening to me? How can I get it to stop? I’m not schizophrenic; I’m psychic but have never had time to develop my abilities. I work full-time and am exhausted. If you were to pick my letter to answer, it would be a blessing. Thank you.
Rose

Dear Rose:

You would be amazed at how many people have the same experiences as they’re falling asleep, for when we quiet our minds and go within, we close out the input of the physical realm and open up to awareness of All That Is. It may comfort you to know that all of this exists when you’re wide awake – your mind is just too focused on the physical to notice this subtle input. When people who are sensitive quiet their minds, they naturally begin to perceive all sorts of things that escape others’ awareness. Hearing voices is not unusual; it’s only when one can’t cope with hearing voices that mental health issues arise. Instead of passively watching and listening to all of this strange stuff, the key to greater peace of mind is for you to empower yourself to manifest the quality of experience you desire.

To rid yourself of this tiresome pattern, you’ll have to learn to focus your mind and gain greater control of your receiver, so to speak. You say you haven’t had time to develop your mental powers, and I believe you’re being pushed to put this higher on your list of priorities. (You’re uncomfortable now because you’ve been fighting this idea for a long time.) If you want things to improve, you can’t continue to put this off. Otherwise, you’re like a person who is physically out of shape who complains that she gets winded every time she climbs a flight of stairs but also makes no time for exercise. To gain more control over what happens in your mind, you’re going to have to make time for mental/ spiritual development.

There are endless theories about what it is you’re picking up on. Some say these visions and voices come from the spirits of people who have died, while others say they are people who exist in another dimension, space or time. Some believe them to be spirit guides and angels; devils and demons; fairies and elves or even aliens. Scientific types tend to view them as snippets from our own subconscious minds, while paranoid folks fear they are the work of government agencies or occultists bent on mind control. You may also be picking up on the private thoughts of other people in this or other dimensions, or remembering snippets from past lives – the possibilities are endless.

It’s important to discern if these voices seem to be talking to you and/or about you or if you are just overhearing them. It sounds like you’re mainly overhearing them, which suggests you are picking up on sounds from another place or dimension.

Imagine that your mind is like a radio. When we learn how to control the mind, we develop the power to focus on what we want to focus on, and via meditation, how to quiet the mind as well. To ease into this, you might begin by consciously focusing on something in particular as you fall asleep at night. If this is challenging, you can try a guided meditation or hypnotherapy recording. Some recordings will help you to fall into a deep, restful sleep, while others will simultaneously guide you in achieving some other desirable aim as you’re drifting off. Once you get the hang of this, you can skip the recording and run your own mental program.

For example, when I have trouble falling asleep, I often visualize what I want to manifest in my life. This is not the same thing as worrying about all I have to do the next day; I just imagine my life as I desire it to be. This has two great benefits. First, I’ve never found anything that puts me to sleep faster – the next thing I know, I’m waking up in the morning. Second, this is a very powerful time to work with the law of attraction. We’re in a relaxed, trancelike state, and since we’re doing this before we go to sleep, we’re programming our subconscious minds to help us manifest what we desire while we slumber. Then we may have an enlightening dream or wake up with a new idea and the fresh energy we need to make good progress the next day.

Another favorite of mine is to count my blessings: Instead of counting sheep, I begin to mentally list all the things I’m grateful for. This raises my vibration and helps me to focus my mental and creative energy on maintaining all the positives in my life.

Obviously, however, not all of what you’re perceiving is random. I feel the man in white who was smiling at you is a spirit guide. (Spirit guides tend to appear all in white like this, and of course they are naturally kind and friendly.) He may have shown up in answer to your prayers for help with these phenomena, which is perfect, since one of my main suggestions for gaining control of unwanted spirit communication is to develop a strong conscious relationship with your spirit guides. I don’t have room to go into working with your spirit guides here, but there is a lot of information about that available elsewhere.

In addition to working with your spirit guides, you can try to communicate with any other spirits who make contact with you in this way. One young woman heard voices like this for years: She’d hear snippets of conversations, music, noises, etc., none of which seemed to have anything to do with her. Then one night it occurred to her to ask (out loud) what the two people she could hear were talking about, and they actually answered her!

If these are spirits who intuit that you are sensitive and will be able to perceive them, it may greatly help you to speak to them and ask them if there is something you can do to help them. If they are troubling you late at night, then set aside time during the day for just this purpose. You might wake up 15 minutes early and tell any spirits that pop in that you’ll be happy to speak to them in the morning. I know this sounds nuts, but it has helped many budding mediums to get a good night’s sleep and take control of their experiences.

There is so much that you can do to transform this pattern. If nothing you try brings relief, you can always see a hypnotherapist. If there are conscious entities involved, they should make themselves known again when you’re in deep trance, and then the therapist can dialogue with them and work out a remedy. Whichever approach you choose, I feel if you set aside more time and energy for this during regular waking hours, you won’t be deluged with psychic input at the end of the day.

Hallucinations of the Dying

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

My 77-year-old mother has been in the ICU for 10 days following cardiac surgery. It took three days for her to come out of anesthesia. Two days ago, she started to hallucinate. Her fourth floor room looks out onto other buildings on the hospital grounds, but she sees cars in driveways and people going in and out of the houses and other things that no one else can see. The most interesting thing is that she is seeing people in her room: a woman with a plate of scones, a man in the chair and children. The children are constantly in her room and she reports that they get along very well. The nurses blame the hallucinations on ICU psychosis. While this explanation sounds plausible, my mother is not the only senior I know who sees people I don’t see. My grandmother often saw departed family members when she was sick, and my mother-in-law saw little people around her a week before she died. My research revealed that many elders see little people or children. Could it be coincidental that all these seniors are having the same hallucinations?
Becky

Dear Becky:

People who are in altered states of consciousness all see the same sorts of things because they are seeing into other dimensions. Sometimes this can be sparked by physical trauma or recreational drug use, but it happens naturally just after we’re born and when we’re close to death, for we are then closer to other dimensions of experience.

Further, when we’re really sick or dying, we aren’t locked into rational thought; in fact, when we’re under great stress like this, we often can’t think straight – we’re highly emotional and perhaps even out of our minds. When we’re in this primal state of consciousness, we can more readily see beyond the physical dimension.

As for why so many seriously ill and/or elderly people may be seeing what you call children, to me it seems fairly obvious that they are seeing beings in another dimension. While they could be spirits, most likely they are elves, gnomes, fairies, pixies or little people. It’s believed that these beings exist in dimensions right next to ours, and this is why various people have spotted them throughout history. Little people fill our folklore and fascinate us because we have encountered them many times, though usually not on a conscious level.

The pattern you describe with your mother is actually very common when patients are recovering from surgery or life threatening illnesses or injuries. In fact, as your nurse tried to explain, there is even a term for it: ICU psychosis. However, these people aren’t hallucinating – by which I mean that they aren’t seeing things that aren’t really there – they’re simply tuning in to another dimension because they are in an altered state of consciousness.

Modern medicine attributes this so-called psychotic break to the unusual stressors encountered in the ICU setting. For example, people in the ICU tend to be sleep-deprived and disoriented due to a lack of awareness of the date or time. They are under great stress and are often heavily medicated. In my view, these are indeed the stimuli at work, but that doesn’t mean that what they are perceiving isn’t real – it’s just not real in this dimension. These stimuli cause an altered state of consciousness and dissociation from the physical, and this is what causes them to see into other dimensions.

There is another related phenomenon known as sundowning in nursing homes. In addition to being elderly (and relatively close to death), this is most likely caused by irregular sleep patterns, which alter one’s state of consciousness. The only way for me to induce out of body experiences was to get drunk on sleep. I would sleep a whole night through and then go back to bed and force myself to lie there and try to fall asleep even though I wasn’t tired. In this state, our minds will tend to stay awake even as we force our bodies to rest, and when that happens, we begin to perceive all sorts of stuff we normally can’t. Simply prolonging the state of drowsiness to unusual lengths of time tends to produce similar experiences, and in most nursing homes and ICU’s, the patients spend an unusual amount of time sleeping and lying in bed.

If people experiencing this sort of thing are afraid for one reason or another, they may become very agitated, paranoid or aggressive, for what they tune into will tend to be of a negative nature. If they are in a positive frame of mind and feeling peaceful or generally have a higher vibration, they may see angels, sweet little people, loved ones in Spirit, etc.

The same thing happens with Alzheimer’s patients and those suffering from dementia. For example, when my brilliant grandfather was quite old and suffering from Alzheimer’s, he would frequently talk about all the things that were happening that none of the rest of us could see. He was quite frustrated because the aliens landing on the roof were perfectly real to him, and when we tried to reassure him that there were no aliens, he just figured we didn’t know what we were talking about. Many Alzheimer’s patients tune in to a dimension we would call the past, and mentally live in that dimension or skip from one to another.

A week or so before my father died, he began to have similar experiences. He talked in particular about seeing elves or dwarf coming out of the fireplace, which didn’t seem to bother him much, but he also talked about seeing a big black monstrous entity. His eyes would get wild with fear as he asked repeatedly, Who is that big black f-cker in the corner? or warned the family to Look out for that big black f-cker in the corner! I presume that he was seeing a demon, for demons are big and black and tend to enter rooms in corners and then hulk or crouch there. (I wasn’t present when these events were occurring, unfortunately, so I couldn’t try to look clairvoyantly for what was going on.)

Not only will great fear attract a demon, but many people believe that demons are like astral vultures in that they will try to feed off of or grab onto the souls of people in weakened or vulnerable states. This is why many people who are near death in some way have reported seeing demon-like entities. People of great faith aren’t spiritually weakened when near death, so they aren’t disturbed by dark forces. When someone who has no strong spiritual beliefs or faith is facing death, they are naturally thrown into great spiritual tumult and can be easy prey for lower astral entities.

I also believe that when we are dying, we attract attention in other dimensions much as the birth of a child attracts attention here. When a baby is born, it’s greeted by loved ones it knew before in its life in the spirit world: its parents died there to be born here before them. It also encounters strange beings wearing masks and gloves who help it transition into this world. When a person dies, the process reverses in that they are greeted on the other side by loved ones who have gone before them along with other helpers who facilitate their transition.

When someone is about to die, I imagine there is just as much interest on the other side as there is interest in a new birth here, so beings are drawn to come and check that person out. It’s also possible that being between life and death places us in a strange twilight zone, and when we show up in that zone consciously, the beings there naturally show an interest in us.

Coping with Sudden Psychic Awakening

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)
Dear Soul Arcanum:

Two years ago I basically died. I stopped breathing, and while I was medically dead, I was pulled into a vortex where I saw obelisks with weird glyphs on them. Some were black and some white, and they were in a sandstorm. I was in a place I felt I had been before, and I heard a soft female voice speaking to me. She didn’t speak English, yet I knew what she was saying. She read something to me, and then she said, You must return. You’re needed. I was then sucked back and painfully reinserted into my body. I was in a state of shock for a week, and then I began to become aware of more things than any human could be. I’m now clairvoyant to the point where I scare myself. I have really frightening recurring dreams, and when I touch physical objects, I see things. It’s weird! I have always had a touch of psychic ability, but this is way more than that, and I don’t know what to do with it all. I have a friend who is clairvoyant, and she said that I have a psychic aura that is growing. She also said that my light is darkness. What does that mean? Can you help me sort this out?

– Stephanie

Dear Stephanie:

In the West, psychic matters have largely either been dismissed as utter nonsense or are considered so frightening that the subject is taboo. By contrast, in many other cultures, psychic experiences are an accepted part of everyday life.

I think a lot of our struggles with spiritual awakening are culturally driven. Since the U.S. is such a melting pot of various peoples, we don’t have traditions or teachings with which to make sense of our psychic experiences. Further, the breakdown of organized religion has left most of us without any sort of spiritual community to lean upon during times of spiritual crisis.

Most people don’t give much thought to spiritual matters until something happens that totally rocks their world, and then they have no one they can go to for help and advice. When they get on the internet in search of answers, many end up at my virtual doorstep.

As I hear this sort of thing all the time, I can reassure you that what you’re going through is quite common. For most people, awakening is a gentle, gradual process. When it happens suddenly, as it did with you, it tends to create a lot of fear and stress.

Near death experiences are a very common cause of sudden spiritual awakening. Since sudden awakenings strike people who have not been consciously preparing for them, those people often feel really overwhelmed. Instead of trying to shut down or close themselves off because they’re afraid, what they need to do is stop focusing on the symptoms (the psychic phenomena), and instead focus on the cause of their discomfort (their need for greater spiritual development.)

It’s sort of like you read a book about being a pilot and then you were put in a fighter jet and told to fly. Instead of worrying about all the ups and downs, you must focus on getting the skills you need to have a safe, smooth journey.

Some key elements of preparing for spiritual awakening include healing old wounds to the psyche; purifying your being; and cultivating faith, compassion, spiritual knowledge and wisdom.

To heal old psychic wounds, you must cultivate self-awareness via tools like journaling, meditation, therapy, deep reflection, etc. You have to face and make peace with your own inner shadows. A big part of this involves learning to forgive yourself and others for past mistakes. It also involves accepting the truth that everything happens for a good reason, for this empowers us to stop blaming things outside ourselves (including God) for our suffering. Only then can we make peace with the past and relax about the future.

Purifying your being involves clearing your body, heart, mind and spirit of blocks and lower energies. On a physical level, this may mean changing your diet and working with something like yoga. (I highly recommend yoga, for its very purpose is to facilitate spiritual awakening.)

To purify your heart and mind, you’ll have to let go of anything of a lower nature and consciously cultivate higher energies. For example, if you harbor resentment against someone, you’ll have to learn to forgive them. If you lust after fame and fortune, you’ll need to cultivate awareness of what’s truly of lasting value to your soul and teach yourself to focus on those things first and foremost.

Setting a clear, high intention will give you tremendous psychic protection. If you don’t have any conscious intention at all, you’ll encounter all sorts of crazy situations. It’s like wandering aimlessly around town – you could end up in some beautiful museum, but you could also end up in a ghetto.

Further, as you learn how to lift yourself out of fearful self-interest to act with love and compassion, you’ll gain control over the quality of your spiritual experiences. For example, through awareness that fear draws frightening entities while love and compassion summon angels and other beings of a higher spiritual nature, you can manifest the quality of experience you desire. It’s essential that you own your power to create your own reality. You’re doing this anyway, so you might as well seize the reins and create wonderful, positive spiritual experiences instead of negative or frightening ones.

You must also learn to trust that whatever comes up for you is designed to teach you something. When you encounter shadows in your outer experience, they always reflect shadows in your own nature, or else they couldn’t enter your experience. Any darkness that comes up is reaching for your attention, and when you shine the light of your awareness on it, it will naturally disappear.

I feel this is what your friend meant when she said that your light is darkness. You have divine light within you that is waiting for you to let it shine. Right now there is much darkness in your aura because you’re afraid, and because you have yet to become aware of all that is happening within you. As you become more aware, you’ll turn that light on.

You’re also being called to learn to love all aspects of your being, and to trust your own inner guidance by pursuing all that you feel drawn to explore and letting go of all that you are guided to release from your life. The more you trust and act on your intuition, the faster you’ll find new balance.

I recommend you read up on psychic matters and undertake focused spiritual studies and training, for the more you learn, the more comfortable you will feel. This will help you leave fear behind and manifest a higher level of experience. Ask your inner being to guide you to the spiritual practices and information that are right for you.

Finally, I believe that everyone who is psychically active should develop a strong relationship with their spirit guides/ angels. These spiritual beings want to help, teach and guide us, especially as we evolve in spiritual consciousness. As they exist at a high vibration, you must shift into a high vibration to consciously connect with them. (I’ve written extensively on how to raise your vibration in other articles.)

Once you create a stronger spiritual foundation, it will be natural for you to have wonderful spiritual experiences, and easy for you to access Spirit’s help and guidance whenever you need it.

Mental Voice Predicts Future Relationship

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

A few years ago I took a seminar, and I raised my hand to ask a question of the teacher. Right after I asked my question, I heard a voice in my head. It was perfectly clear, and it told me that I had just met my future husband. I was so taken aback that I actually looked around the room to see if anyone else had heard or noticed anything, but everything seemed normal. I live in the same town as this man, and I haven’t seen him since, but this experience still pops in my head now and then, especially since I’m still single. Do you think it’s possible that this man is indeed my future husband? Either way, what in the world was this voice? Thank you so much!
– M.

Dear M.:

I know this sounds crazy, but if my own experiences hold your answer, I’d say this man IS your future husband!

One of the most powerful psychic experiences we can have is the recognition of someone we’ve known well in a prior incarnation. Even people who aren’t into psychic matters are open to the idea that there are some people we meet with whom we have a special sense of connection.

Scientists may attribute this to sensory clues such as the way that person looks, smells, or uses body language. However, there is a magical quality to some meetings that transcends biology; it’s a special feeling that arises when we meet someone we already have a very strong psychic bond to – someone we have had important experiences with in another life.

Whether that other person is a potential romantic connection or not, usually these feelings are strongly attractive. For example, we may experience “love at first site” with someone of the opposite sex, but we may also experience a sense of kinship upon first meeting someone who will become a good friend, mentor, teacher, boss, etc.

Such feelings aren’t always positive, however. Sometimes we may feel instantly repelled, scared, uneasy or cautious. This happens when we meet someone who has caused us pain or suffering in the past. In my experience, the attractive feeling is far more common, but that may differ by person. If someone has a hard time with relationships, they may have more painful experiences, and when they meet up with people again in the future, it would be natural for them to have more negative reactions.

I can only think of two times I had strong negative feelings about someone right off the bat, and despite my desire to stay far away from those individuals, I ended up having very trying experiences with them. I believe that premonitions like this are reflective of both the past AND the future: we recognize that person as familiar from the past, and we sense the karma that lies ahead.

In the case of negative reactions, the pain we experienced in another life is brought to the surface, and our soul recognizes that we’re about to face some big lesson or deal with some heavy karma. In the case of positive reactions, the love and happiness we experienced in another life is reawakened, and our soul recognizes that we’ve found someone we’ve been missing for a long time someone we perhaps didn’t even know existed.

I can’t think of a single important relationship in my life that didn’t “announce” itself with a weighty feeling the first time I met that person. Think through the key relationships in your own life: your best friends, favorite teachers, boyfriends, etc., and review what happened the first time you met them. If you don’t recall anything special, it may just be because the volume on your psychic abilities isn’t turned up far enough for you to hear anything but the “loudest” emanations. Meeting a soul mate/future husband would certainly bang a big psychic gong!

I believe that “true love” reunions carry the most intense psychic impact, because the strongest experiences I’ve had with that voice you describe occurred when I met my husbands. (It happened with both my first and my second/current husband).

At the time I met my first husband, I was in college and very independent and ambitious. As my mom had been married and divorced a number of times, I was not a big fan of marriage in general, and planned on never marrying myself. Then one night I went to visit a friend at his fraternity, and on my way in the door, I saw my ex for the first time as he was on his way out. A jolt went through me when I saw him, but at this point, my psychic abilities were dormant, so I didn’t know what this meant.

Later that night I attended a party at that fraternity, and he was there. There was a strange buzz in the air, though again, I wasn’t processing any of this consciously. It felt like I had been placed there and was going through motions I was supposed to go through – like this had all been planned in advance. While I felt attracted to him, it was far more intense than any attraction I’d ever felt before.

When I got back to my room that night, my roommate and some other girls who were hanging out asked how my night had gone, and without thinking, I blurted, “I just met the man I’m going to marry!” It was only as I said those words that I consciously realized that this was indeed what I’d been sensing. My roommate said, “I thought you were never going to get married,” and I replied, “So did I!”

Perhaps some readers are questioning the quality of this experience, since that marriage didn’t last until death did us part. I sincerely believe that we were meant to come together to bring our children into the world, but that we were not meant to stay together forever. I don’t have space to explain it all here, but a number of other spiritual experiences support this view.

As for my current husband, the first time I saw him, he was sitting with someone else in a restaurant, and the same thing happened: time seemed to stop and I was riveted. By this point, however, I had developed my psychic abilities, and I knew that he was going to prove to be a very important person in my life. “Coincidentally,” two weeks later I joined a new gym, and the first day I walked in, he was there. It wasn’t long before I knew we were destined to be together romantically. (He, however, didn’t wake up to this fact until a year later. Needless to say, that was a very long year for me!)

If one individual of a destined couple is highly psychic like you and the other is not, often the psychic person knows they are destined to be together, while the other one doesn’t realize it until the time is at hand. This can be really nerve wracking for the one who senses the truth, unless that person remembers that if something is indeed destined, it will happen. If it’s not destined, then there’s no point worrying about it. Knowing the future before it is due to happen can be really challenging unless we have the faith to relax and trust in a higher plan.

I believe the voice or feeling you describe is a psychic alarm that goes off when we meet really important people we’re destined to develop relationships with. I’ve heard many stories about first meetings with future spouses that are similar to those described here, and time and time again, despite all sorts of obstacles (like living on separate continents!), those prophetic feelings proved true.

If I were you, I’d ask Spirit for confirmational signs about this man. If you then you start hearing his name, bumping into him around town, or something similar, for heaven’s sake, smile and make eye contact! While destiny is powerful stuff, it never hurts to help things along. Perhaps instead of just predicting the future, that voice is trying to nudge you to step back into your lover’s arms.

Earth Energy Tension Before Big Earthquake

on sensing earth energy…

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I had such a hard time the week or two before the big tsunami hit in Indonesia, and the period just following it. I just wasn’t myself. I didn’t feel well either, but I sense that this was not a medical problem, but rather a spiritual one. I was frequently dizzy, nauseous and disoriented, and I had wild nightmares. I’m wondering if this is related to the massive earthquake that caused the tsunami. While I’m not one to usually worry about “earth changes,” this time I was so personally affected that I’m kind of freaked out! Was I tuning in to earth energy?
– Erica

Dear Erica:

As our bodies are naturally attuned to the Earth, all animals and humans are sensitive to some degree to the Earth’s energy, especially when it peaks or builds in tension as with earthquakes. Some people have experiences like this before every local earthquake, and every big one around the globe. The symptoms you experienced – dizziness, nausea and disorientation – are common ones. Others include mood swings, irritability, headaches/migraines, ringing tones or pressure in the ears, sleep disruptions, heart palpitations, anxiety, and physical pain in certain parts of the body.

It makes sense that bigger earthquakes would produce longer periods of tension and affect more people, and this was a whopper. In an article in the Montreal Gazette, I read that the total energy of the tsunami waves was greater than twice the total explosive energy used during all of World War II (including the two atomic bombs), but that even this was far less than the energy released in the earthquake itself. Further, NASA scientists have determined that this earthquake affected the Earth’s rotation, slightly altered the planet’s shape, and shifted the North Pole by centimeters. Given the magnitude of this event, I imagine everyone was affected to some degree either consciously or subconsciously.

While I’m not a scientist by any means, somewhere along the line I picked up a very simple model of the Earth’s energy patterns that has helped me to visualize what is happening with various phenomena such as earthquakes. Picture waves of energy that are in constant motion around and through the planet. These are like radio or sound waves. Via lightning and other means, the Earth is sort of cordlessly “plugged in” to the Sun, and thus the energy/power never stops flowing. The Earth is thus like a complex toy “top” that is constantly “on.”

As the Earth is “on” and spinning, it produces sort of a “hum.” That is the sound of the Earth. This “hum” is actually more like a symphony than a single note, however. While there is an overall “sound” to a symphony, if we listen very carefully, we can hear that there are actually many instruments and different notes playing, and the “song” is always changing, always in motion. Further, depending on where we stand in relationship to the symphony, it will sound different. In one spot we’ll hear more flute, while in another, we’ll hear more percussion, etc. Someone who is very sensitive and aware of this “music” will of course be able to discern the subtle differences in sound from one moment to another, and in one location versus another.

This has helped me to understand why and how every place in the world has its own unique feeling, and how places very far apart can feel similar to each other, and yet unique at the same time. For example, the groovy college town I live in is a long way from Playa del Carmen, Mexico, and yet there is something similar about these two places. They’re not identical, but they have an overall “tone” that is comparable. This tone produces an atmosphere that is open, laid back and “groovy,” and very different from the energy of New York City, for example.

While there are places on Earth that usually “sound” light and sweet, and others that are generally deeper, darker or more “exciting,” there are also places where occasionally cymbals crash. Fault lines are places where energy peaks like this. (It is most likely the energy building in those areas that creates the fault line, as opposed to the fault line producing that energy.)

There are some people who are so consciously or biologically tuned in to the music of the Earth that they can sense a crescendo building toward a “storm” or earthquake. Animals are known to be able to predict storms like this. If, however, that symphony starts to play louder or with more tension/intensity than it has for a long time, as with the recent earthquake in Indonesia, even those of us who are normally not tuned in could be affected.

Imagine a stereo that is constantly “on” with the volume turned all the way down. Some people with extraordinary hearing might be able to pick up the hum of that stereo all the time, while the rest of us remain oblivious. If the volume is turned up just slightly, however, then those with sensitive hearing (sensitive people) would “hear it,” while those less sensitive might never notice a thing. If we have never heard a particular sound before, or perceive it at a less than conscious level, we might say, “What’s that noise?” and not figure out until the music peaked (the earthquake hit) that we were sensing the music of the Earth building toward a crescendo.

This is what I think caused the phenomena experienced by many sensitive people during the weeks surrounding the Indonesian earthquake. I am not usually affected by natural disasters around the globe, nor do I ever predict such things, and yet I and a remarkable number of the most sensitive people I know all experienced a period of extreme tension preceding and following this event, similar to what you describe.

The most common symptom reported to me was a very disturbed sleep pattern. Starting a few weeks before the earthquake, we would fall asleep only to awaken about an hour later, and then drift in and out of sleep all night long. We all experienced weeks of extreme irritability as well, though this could have been caused by a lack of sleep. There were other striking shared experiences, such as dealing with major health crises of family members. While at first glance it may seem unlikely that these were more than coincidence, perhaps extreme tension building in the Earth can throw people with fragile health into crisis.

Since an earthquake is basically the Earth releasing stress/tension, and as we’re all energetically interconnected, we might relate this build up of tension to our inner processes. As balance will ultimately prevail, when we allow stress and tension to build in our own lives, we will eventually erupt ourselves. When the Earth’s plates shift in an earthquake, we’re wise to ponder if we need to make a paradigm shift ourselves.

I recently visited a very gifted spiritual healer whose experiences with the earthquake energy mirrored my own, and she pointed out that somewhere along the line, we’d misplaced our “inner child.” This struck me as an important insight. The sleepless irritability so many of us experienced was indeed the antithesis of the playful, happy, carefree energy of a child. In any case, our discomfort did force us to reflect on our lives and what was going on, and to make some positive changes in our own energy.

When we pay attention to our bodies and our subtle senses like this, and start to understand how the Earth’s energy affects us, we see more and more meaning in our patterns of experience. Then we can consciously work with the wisdom of our bodies and natural spiritual law to create more of what we want in our lives.
