Copper Pyramids and Spirit Communication

Dear Soul Arcanum:

Your response to Elaine’s question about contacting spirits was lovely. I have done that, but it didn’t happen until years after my sister’s death. She and other teachers wanted to contact me even more than I wanted to contact her, for they had things to teach me. They instructed me to build a copper pyramid and to sit in it. They gave the same message to my sister within the same timeframe. What I heard from these spirit beings changed dramatically after I sat in this pyramid. What is it about the pyramid and the energy change it created that did this? I went from hearing loving, comforting spiritual messages to receiving profound information about who and what I am in relation to God/Existence. What did the pyramid do that allowed me to hear teachings unknown to me and very likely to many others? My sign is Aquarius; I was born 2-1-61.
– Rebecca

Dear Rebecca:

There is a lot of mystery surrounding Egypt’s pyramids, and a strong association between the pyramid shape and mysticism in general. Before I address your experience with this copper pyramid, I want to explore a little bit of the esoteric history of pyramids.

While many pyramids in Egypt were perhaps primarily royal tombs, the Great Pyramid seems to have been designed for a deeper purpose. We don’t know who built it, for it appears to be physically impossible for the ancient Egyptians to have constructed it given the technology available at the time. Further, it is perfectly aligned with the stars; its sacred geometry is so sophisticated that scholars doubt ancient Egyptians could ever have made the astronomical calculations required to plan it, much less construct it in perfect accordance with those specifications.

Some say that the technologically gifted people of ancient Atlantis are responsible, while others suggest that only aliens from a civilization far more advanced than our own could have pulled its construction off. The original purpose behind the Great Pyramid is also unknown. It is generally agreed that it is far more than an enormous tomb, and was perhaps never designed or used as such anyway; it appears to have been built for a far more scientific or esoteric purpose. Given the messages deciphered in hieroglyphics, many believe that pyramids were enormous tools designed to enable prophecy and other spiritual aims.

Regardless of the purpose for the Great Pyramid (which we will probably never determine for sure), pyramids in general have proven to be great tools for meditation and channeling life force energy, for the shape of the pyramid naturally focuses energy flow on whatever is directly beneath its apex.

Indeed, countless scientific experiments have shown that placing an object inside a pyramid can produce remarkable effects. (Please note that these “pyramids” are not solid, but are the structural outline of a pyramid without walls.)

For example, plants that are grown inside a pyramid thrive and generally grow at a highly accelerated rate. Pyramids can also slow the deterioration of biological matter; food placed under a pyramid will stay fresh two to three times longer than normal. The molecular structure of biological matter like food and water will also be inexplicably altered, and placing drinking water under a pyramid can improve its taste and other properties. Pyramids may also dehydrate (or mummify) items, but without decaying them.

Some people actually sleep under a pyramid because they believe it encourages restful sleep and wonderful spiritual dreams. Experiments have also shown that being inside a pyramid can ease pain, boost our energy, and accelerate physical healing. Kirlian photos of people’s auras show that sitting inside a pyramid tends to make one’s aura grow much larger and brighter. People who sit or meditate under pyramids report that their thinking grows crystal clear and their meditations are much deeper than normal.

In experiment after experiment, meditators reported the same effects of sitting under a pyramid. Many felt strangely weightless, experienced a distortion in their sense of time, and felt electrical tingles on their skin. Those who were hooked up to EEG machines were shown to have more alpha and theta brain waves, and those signals were twice their normal amplitude. Those who sit under pyramids also frequently report spiritual visions, out of body experiences and profound meditations.

Sitting under a pyramid also tends to make people feel wonderfully balanced. If they feel lethargic before sitting, they feel energized after; if they feel anxious or upset before sitting, they feel calm after.

This brings us to why copper may have been recommended as your pyramid building material: copper is first of all a very good conductor of energy. It also is known to balance the body’s polarity. (This is why people wear copper bracelets for various physical problems.) As copper encourages harmony and amplifies energy, it is wonderful for balancing the flow of give and take, which we might label energetic COMMUNICATION.

Meditating under a copper pyramid could facilitate spirit communication by helping us achieve a very deep state of harmony and relaxation while at the same time raising our vibration. It would make us enhanced receivers and transmitters of the energy of telepathic messages.

You may also be interested to know that many believe that pyramids were like temples wherein one might be initiated into secret esoteric knowledge and practices. When we view your own pyramid experiences in this light, we might say that you were “initiated” into a new level of spirit communication.

While the effects of pyramids can be shown in experiment after experiment, much of their power is shrouded in mystery, or at least is beyond my own current understanding of physics. So while I can offer you lots of support for the validity of what you experienced, I can’t explain how or why your own experiment with a copper pyramid produced the effects it did.

I do know, however, that your decision to act on the message you received from Spirit would be very powerful in and of itself. As Jesus taught, “Knock and the door will be opened, seek and you shall find.” You listened to Spirit and you honored what you received by acting on it, and in this way, you really knocked on that proverbial door. Even if sitting under the copper pyramid didn’t do a thing but make you look really strange, I believe your faith and trust alone could have lifted you into this new level of spiritual experience.

How Can We Communicate with Loved Ones in Spirit?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

On Christmas Eve in 2003, my daughter (who was 25 years old) and my grandchildren (who were three and six years old) were murdered. I have been to Spiritualist churches and had my girls talk to me, so I know they have continued on in the afterlife. What I want to know is how I can do this myself. I talk to them all day and most of the night. I say my prayers and ask God to help me, but I never feel my girls around me. Please, do you think you could tell me what to do? Love to you!
– Elaine

Dear Elaine:

My heart goes out to you; I can’t imagine how it felt to lose your loved ones in this way. I do understand your disappointment with your attempts at spirit communication, however. Like you, my desire for spirit contact was born when someone I loved dearly passed. In my case, it was my first love who died at a young age, and I wanted nothing more than to connect with him again. It was thus very upsetting to me when I started to interact with other spirits, but not with him.

While I believe that with the right approach, spirit communication is possible for everyone, please keep in mind that even established mediums can’t always connect with particular spirits.

So why would the spirits we most desire to connect with elude us? There are a couple of reasons this often happens. First, in order to link with spirits, we must have a very high vibration, which means we must be in a state of great joy and peace. If someone we love more than life itself crosses over, it may be very hard to achieve that vibration when thinking of them. Grief is about as low in vibration as one can get, so to link with the people we love the most, we may have to spend a lot of time healing after their deaths before we’re able to think of them with love and joy. This is why a medium may be able to bring them through when we cannot.

Another thing that often happens with those we’ve loved dearly is that they are so close we don’t distinguish their energy as separate from our own. If they were a big “part of us” when they were alive, then this becomes even more true after they cross over. If a spouse is trying to communicate with us from beyond, it may seem like nothing more than our own thoughts coming through. If a stranger or an acquaintance reaches out from the other side, however, it may feel more like “someone else” is there.

This is similar to our ability to sense people’s presence when they’re living. Imagine you’re in the kitchen and your daughter is in the living room. In the back of your mind you know she is there even if you haven’t seen her there with your physical eyes. You may not be consciously thinking about where she is, but at an unconscious level, you can sense her presence. Now picture that a stranger is in your house, and you suddenly sense a change in the atmosphere. Even when a stranger is benevolent, our instincts will alert us when someone we don’t know is nearby.

By way of another example, unless you printed this out, your computer is on right now, and it’s making its normal electrical hum. Until I drew your attention to it, however, you were not conscious of this noise. It is there so often that you have learned to tune it out. If your computer started making a clinking noise – something you’re not used to – it would get your attention immediately.

This is the difference between the presence of the spirit of a loved one we were close to and other spirits. The loved ones may be there all the time, but because they are so familiar to us, we don’t take conscious note of it. We have to learn to listen with “new ears” to hear subtle sounds running in the background.

To complicate matters further, the non-physical is not accessed “out there somewhere,” but rather from within. When we look for spirits in our outer physical world or expect to hear or perceive them with our physical senses, we may be disappointed. It’s important for people who have never had conscious communication with spirits before to understand that this is a very subtle, internal experience. Have you ever been doing something and felt someone looking at you, then glanced up to find out your were right? This is how subtle this feeling is.

You described how you talk to your daughter and grandchildren all day. It sounds like you are very verbal/auditory, so you are probably trying to get answers clairaudiently. To me this is the hardest form of spirit communication because language is already a step removed from the heart of a message. It’s not universal the way that images and feelings are.

It’s my understanding that this is also the hardest way for spirits to communicate with us. The non-physical is a place of energy and mental telepathy, not spoken or written language. When we receive messages from spirits, we are the ones who usually translate the thought energy of the message into words; not the spirits. To get names and verbal answers is thus relatively very difficult.

It’s easiest for spirits to communicate in the language of emotion, which is pure energy. This is why we may feel a wash of love when a spirit is reaching out to us – there are no words for that sort of feeling. So if you’re just getting started with spirit communication, you might want to begin with basic instincts like those gut feelings that someone is there. Often people who are grieving do have these feelings tip them off to the presence of a loved one in Spirit, but they dismiss them as wishful thinking. The more you work with and trust those feelings, the more this form of awareness will grow.

If you’re having trouble even sensing a presence like this, try doing something that puts you in a very high vibration (a feeling of peace and joy) first, and then open up and “feel” for your loved ones. This may be something you simply love, or if you can, you might journal about the best times with your daughter and grandchildren, and get yourself into a state of profound happiness and appreciation for the wonderful memories you have. Then when your heart is swelling with love and joy, stop and close your eyes and ask to feel their presence.

If it is too hard for you to think about them and remain joyful, you might have to begin by asking for them to meet you in your dreams. Many people only have contact with loved ones in their dreams because that is the only time their vibration is high enough and their minds are open enough for this sort of thing to happen. If you begin to work with your dreams (and there are lots of books and articles on this subject) and you set a conscious intention every night of meeting up with them in your dreams, it will begin to happen.

Above all, you must both believe that you can do this and that the successes you achieve are REAL. Trust in your own experiences and be open to them taking whatever shape they want to take. You may be listening for a verbal answer, for example, when signs, feelings, mental images, or so-called “coincidences” are happening all around you. Don’t expect a marching band to ring your doorbell with a singing telegram; instead, listen carefully for whispers in your mind or subtle feelings throughout all of your being and trust them. If you FEEL it’s real, then it’s real.

Lucky for us all, spirit communication seems to be getting easier and easier as the human race evolves and the vibration of the planet rises. So what may have been hard for you yesterday could happen easily tomorrow. I wish you deeply healing, comforting, and undeniably real interactions with your loved ones, Elaine.

How Can I Communicate with my Departed Son?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

You recently did a reading for me and brought through some specific details and communication from my departed son. Do you think I can communicate like this with him too? I know I feel his presence and have dream encounters with him, but this is nothing like the specific communication you are able to bring through. It would mean so much to me to be able to see things and hear things from him like you do. Is it difficult? How can I learn to communicate more clearly with him?
– Liz

Dear Liz:

I absolutely believe you can learn how to do this. It’s a bit like learning how to draw portraits: some people will have a natural artistic gift, while others will find those skills elusive. I don’t believe spirit communication is difficult, but then again, artists probably don’t believe what they do is difficult either. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to “perform” at a certain level right from the start, or in frustration, you’ll just hinder your own success.

Spirit communication basically requires five ingredients. They are: desire, openness, a high vibration, trust and skill. If you can cultivate these ingredients, you can make this happen.

Here’s what I recommend:

Desire: You have this part down pat. As I wrote in a recent column, many natural mediums only discover their ability after someone very dear passes on, because that is the first time they have a desire strong enough to bridge the chasm between this world and spiritual realms. Your strong desire to communicate with your son will carry you far in this endeavor. I believe this is the most important ingredient in successful communication.

Just “playing around” with spirit communication doesn’t usually produce powerful results. If one does not have someone dear on the other side that they long to reconnect with, a passionate curiosity about life’s mysteries may be enough.

Openness: You must believe that spirit communication is possible. This actually involves a number of related beliefs. You must at least be open to the idea that we continue on after death, and that it is possible to communicate with those who have passed on. Your personal encounters with your son since his death have of course underscored your belief in the afterlife. The reading we did further deepened your belief that it’s possible to achieve clear, evidential communication with spirits. If we believe something is impossible, it’s highly unlikely that we will experience it.

So anyone desiring spirit communication would be wise to examine their beliefs about this subject, and if they find they are skeptical but at the same time desire to experience something that proves to them that this is a valid phenomenon, I recommend they work on their belief system by reading books about the subject, visiting gifted mediums, spending time in Spiritualist churches or with people who are already believers, etc.

High Vibration: Everything in the Universe is energy, and the non-physical exists at a vibration higher than ours here on Earth. To connect with those in the non-physical, we thus have to raise our vibration.

By way of metaphor, imagine that the quality of everyone’s personal vibration can be seen as a color. Here on Earth our colors range from red to violet. Folks of a “lower vibration” here may look “red” and folks aligned with a high vibration may look “violet.” We might say that earthbound entities (those dark spirits who haunt our ghost stories and horror movies) are infrared, while spirits, guides and angels are ultraviolet and beyond.

Our vibration is not static; it is constantly moving through our own personal range. The more spiritually evolved we are, the higher our vibration will tend to be, and thus the closer it will tend to be to the “ultraviolet” band of the non-physical. To communicate with spiritual entities, we must step up our vibration and they must reach down to us via desire. Thus we meet in a middle ground somewhere between violet and ultraviolet. (Please remember this is just a metaphor.)

We can raise our vibration by being “high-minded” – thinking high vibration thoughts and feeling high vibration feelings. This is why those who are deeply grieving often can’t connect with the one they are grieving for; their vibration is just too low. It’s also why we often have encounters with loved ones in Spirit when we are thinking of them with love, for that love lifts our hearts and spirits up where we are able to perceive subtler energies.

There are many other ways to raise your vibration. Some of them are simply habits that many psychics and mediums practice on a regular basis in order to be able to do this sort of work whenever they need to. Some methods include: adopting a healthy diet and exercise regimen; meditating; doing yoga; practicing right action, kindness, integrity and positive thinking; cultivating an attitude of gratitude, walking a conscious spiritual path, etc.

I continually strive for all of the above in order to remain a clear channel. When I initiate spirit communication for a reading, I also clear my aura and fill myself with light, say a prayer, set a very high intention, and center my awareness in my heart chakra while sending love to the one I’m reading for and those in Spirit who are being sought. I basically “lift my heart” up to Spirit in order to connect clearly.

Trust: This is probably the hardest thing for most people. It involves trusting whatever you perceive and remaining mentally open to various manifestations of Spirit. While one medium may channel long verbal speeches from Spirit, there are many others ways for communication to come through, and they don’t all work for everyone.

At first, messages from Spirit may not even come to you mentally; they may come through signs in your outer experience, the words of others, your dreams, etc. You must trust those experiences in order to move into a deeper range of potential. The more you trust the communications and signs you receive, the more you will progress.

Skill: Rounding out our mediumship abilities takes a lot of practice. This is where skill comes in. At first you may only receive messages from Spirit in the way that is easiest for you and most natural for the spirit communicating, which leaves no way to “check” the meaning of the message or “round it out.” If you’re very visual and the spirit is very kinesthetic, for example, it may be very hard to ever achieve clear communication without the helpful intercession of a guide. At this point you have to begin to refine all of your skills, especially those that are hardest for you.

At this point you simply experiment with various methods and work at them in order to improve. You might try working with a pendulum for starters, then feel drawn toward automatic writing or the use of another divination tool, and in this way naturally progress. Trust Spirit to guide you via your intuition. There are lots of books and classes on various spirit communication methods; explore whatever draws your interest.

To find the best way for you, devote yourself to working with your chosen methods, evaluate your results, and keep refining your approach as you go.

May you have many wonderful experiences of Spirit!

What Made You a Believer in Spirit?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I read that you’re a Spiritualist minister, and also read your theory that to experience Spirit, we have to believe it is possible. How does that happen in the first place? Were you raised Spiritualist? If not, what made you a believer? Did something happen that convinced you? Have you always been psychic and able to communicate with spirits? Do you still have new and different experiences of Spirit that deepen your convictions?
– Robert

Dear Robert:

I was not raised Spiritualist, nor have I always had psychic experiences or been able to communicate with Spirits. While my family was officially Episcopalian, we did not attend church regularly. Like many people who grew up in the 60’s and 70’s, religion was not a big part of my upbringing. In a way, that probably helped me, because I had no limiting beliefs about the supernatural being evil or dangerous. My mind was pretty open.

The first experience to blow my mind about what is possible came when I was 17 and first my first love died suddenly. I don’t have space to relay the whole story here, but basically, though his death was totally unexpected, somehow the last time we saw each other, we both knew that we wouldn’t see each other again. Many strange messages and events surrounded his death. Somehow at some level, we both knew he was going to die. He even arranged for messages to be delivered to me AFTER his death. While “losing” him to the other side was deeply traumatic, these amazing spiritual experiences rocked my entire worldview. It was then that I started to become interested in the deeper nature of life and death.

At that time I was very busy with finishing high school and going on to college, so I didn’t really start reading spiritual material until a few years later. When I was 20 I became pregnant with my son, and that is when my psychic doors blew open. Nick is what many would call a very old soul, and is extraordinarily psychic himself. As soon as he was able to talk, he began saying the most amazing things. He “remembered” God and what he was doing before he was born, for example. I believe that his spiritual vibration was far higher than mine, and that when I conceived him, his energy blasted my own vibration upwards. This led to a very powerful, intense, accelerated journey of spiritual awakening.

At that time I began to see, hear and otherwise perceive things that others could not. Some of these things seemed innocuous enough: I would know that the phone was about to ring and who would be calling, for example. I would have intuitions about situations that would prove true. At the same time, however, I began to see auras and “balls of energy,” and also to perceive frightening entities in my peripheral vision. As soon as I would turn to look at them, they would disappear. (This is very common when one’s third eye is beginning to open.) Many of these encounters were terrifying. I write that here so that those who are having similar experiences will know that this is “normal.”

These scary things happened because I was living in a constant state of fear. I wasn’t sharing these experiences with anyone because I feared that I was crazy, and if anyone found out, they would take my baby from me. As my vibration was full of fear, I naturally attracted frightening energies/entities. Fearing that I was schizophrenic, I began to research what I was experiencing from a psychological angle. This reading referenced spiritual explanations, and as I began to read more about mystical experiences through history and around the world, I was relieved to learn that many people had experienced what I was experiencing, and that it was part of an early spiritual awakening process.

As my fear dissolved, my vibration rose, and I began to have more positive experiences. I also learned how to deal with dark forces: by shining the light of love on them. At this time, I began to spontaneously experience communication from spirits.

If someone I was with began to talk about someone who had crossed over with love, that spirit might appear behind them as a big ball of misty energy. (Usually it was a deep purple color, but it was sometimes golden and sometimes colorless, like heat waves coming off of pavement.) The spirit would communicate with me mentally and ask me to relay messages to the person I was talking to. They would give me “evidence” such as their name, occupation, or other identifying details. When I would find the courage to tell the person what I was experiencing, time and time again, the message from Spirit was not only accepted and validated, but it would have a profound healing effect on its recipient. That is when I began to believe that what I was experiencing was not only very real, but also very valuable.

When I saw the healing power of these messages, I decided to devote my life to this work. At that time, Spirit sort of took over. I was guided in incredible ways to the teachers, books and opportunities I needed to master spirit communication. I have been supported by Spirit every step of the way since then, and have had countless experiences validate my beliefs. These have included (but have not been limited to) amazing astral experiences, incredible manifestations of whatever I needed, thousands of readings that were validated as accurate and evidential, personal guidance from Spirit that proved accurate and evidential, countless instances of synchronicity sparked by me honoring an impulse or intuition, etc.

After all of this, I DO still have experiences that move me and deepen my faith. For example, recently I had a very profound astral encounter. My grandparents passed over some 15 years ago, and since then, my grandmother has remained close. In fact, she was one of the first spirits to ever appear to me, and it is very easy for me to connect with her mentally. My grandfather, however, has only touched in now and then, and I can never seem to reach him of my own volition. This has somewhat saddened me, but I had come to accept it.

A couple of weeks ago, I met with my grandfather in the astral. First I believed myself to be dreaming, but then suddenly I looked up and saw him there, and I became so excited. I basically said, “It’s YOU!” I flew to him and embraced him, and he felt so REAL. I was struck by how seeing him, feeling him, and smelling him refreshed my memory of him. It was the difference between remembering someone in your mind, and then actually SEEING them for real. We had a wonderful conversation about where he has been since he “died,” and he assured me that he has been close despite the fact that I’d had trouble connecting with him.

My alarm clock then went off, and I couldn’t “get back” into my body at first. When I was finally able to speak, I croaked to my husband that I needed “help, because I can’t get back.” He touched me, which helped me to move back into my body fully. I spent the whole morning weeping, not because I was sad, but because I was so moved by this experience, and so grateful.

So to answer the question behind all your questions, you don’t have to believe to begin to experience such things, but you do have to be open to believing. If you want to start experiencing things that will help you to believe, I recommend you begin meditating regularly and spending time with highly spiritual people. Pray for Spirit to give you “paranormal” experiences, act on your intuitions, and immerse yourself in spiritual study. Experience by experience, your belief will deepen, and as that happens, bigger and more amazing experiences will follow.

How Do Mediums Experience Spirit Communication?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. All rights reserved. :)

You recently ran an inspirational message in which you wrote that one day you realized that memories you had shared with a departed love were running in the background of your mind, and by this, you knew that he was trying to connect with you. Since you’re a medium, it surprised me that you didn’t just know he was there as soon as he showed up. I guess I have no idea how spirit communication works. I mean, I know they don’t call up on the telephone, but can you explain about how you experience communication like this?
– Beth

Dear Beth:

Actually, spirits do sometimes call up on the telephone. (They also affect communication through radios, computers and other electronic equipment). There are even researchers who get voicemails from Spirit! For more information on this fascinating subject, try an Internet search for EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena).

The tremendous majority of spirit communication, however, does not take place through anything the five senses can perceive. It is an inner experience. This only makes sense if you think about it, for spirits are non-physical beings. It takes tremendous energy and interdimensional savvy for spirits to affect things in the physical, or manifest in a “physical” form.

Many people fail to understand how subtle spirit communication tends to be, and thus they fail to recognize much of the spirit contact that is taking place in their own lives at a subconscious level all the time. For example, they may have a “feeling” of the presence of a loved one in Spirit as they are remembering them with affection, but dismiss it as wishful thinking and hold out for a more tangible encounter. While stories abound of loved ones appearing in a ghostly mist at the foot of a bed at the time of their departure from this plane, the tremendous bulk of spirit communication takes place at a mental level. Even when a medium on a platform is looking over an audience member’s head, saying, “I see a gentleman in a tuxedo and top hat standing behind you,” she most likely is “seeing” that in her mind, not in the physical space near that person.

I have also found that the people we are closest to in life are often the hardest to distinguish as “voices” or energies outside of ourselves. People who can connect with friends, coworkers and strangers in spirit are often hurt and confused when they can’t do the same with the love of their lives. I often find that instead of being absent, those most beloved in Spirit are SO CLOSE that we can’t distinguish them as energies distinct from and outside of us. They were “in our hearts” before they crossed over, and they remain in them after.

So just as it can be hard to discern between our own intuition and the guidance of spirit guides, it can be especially hard to discern between our own minds/imaginations and the messages or impressions of dear loved ones in Spirit. If your Aunt Betty came through to me for you in a reading, I would know this is an energy that is “foreign” to me, like a stranger. When my own grandmother comes through however, as she has been for many years now, it’s comfortable and familiar, and I may at first not notice she’s there. (She’s always around, so there is no big shift occurring). Imagine the energetic difference between having your spouse of 25 years slip into bed beside you while you’re reading the paper. You might keep reading without realizing they’d come to bed. Now imagine that a stranger has slipped into bed with you. Pretty hard to ignore!

Further, loved ones we were very close to tend to be around more and come through to us of their own volition, where we have to purposefully reach out to other spirits. While both can and will come through to me when I center myself and try to consciously connect, my own loved ones and guides will reach out while I’m doing various mundane tasks (just as yours will try to do with you). So I may be focused on something else entirely, and then suddenly “notice” that there is a quiet “knocking” at the back of my mind. Often, this takes the form of memories we shared. The most common such “knock” for me is visual images and memories of places we spent a lot of time in together when they were living.

I now know that when I notice certain images are running in the back of my mind, certain spirits are trying to get my attention. If you’re not visual like me, this is sort of like realizing that a certain song is running through your mind if you’re auditory, or a certain feeling is present in some area your being if you’re kinesthetic. When I begin to see images/ memories of my beloved grandmother’s house coming to the surface of my awareness, then I know that she is trying to get my attention. I may be writing this column, taking a shower, doing the dishes, etc. Similarly, when I see images of the high school parking lot and football stadium where I met my first love every day after school, I know he is trying to get my attention. (Why else would a parking lot keep pushing up into my conscious awareness?)

We are all in communication with non-physical entities all the time, but most people are not conscious of it. Imagine that you’ve grown up in a rustic village on a remote tropical island, and due to the limited gene pool, 90% of the population has sorely compromised eyesight. They think this is “normal” of course, and that those who can see tiny things they cannot are either “gifted” or “crazy.” Some “seers” on this island would probably learn to keep quiet about the things they can see when very young. I imagine a child pointing at something and everyone around her saying, “There’s nothing there! You’re crazy!”

Now imagine that a doctor visits the island and makes you a pair of magnifying glasses. Suddenly, your whole world expands. Behind, beneath and between everything you’ve always seen you discover so much more. Those things were there all the while, and a few of the others were perceiving them too, but you were all too shy or scared to talk about it. You are now capable of things you could never do before as well. Of course, the glasses are only good for seeing small things up close; to see the “old way,” you have to take them off.

Becoming conscious of the spirit communication that is ever taking place is much like this. When we “notice” signs “knocking” at the back of our minds and then we turn our conscious attention to it, we put on our “psychic glasses” (attune our vibration to that subtle energy). Then conscious communication can take place. This vibration is not where we want to be when we’re cutting vegetables, driving a car, or even editing papers, however, so spirit communication naturally involves a shift from one state of awareness to another.

“Knocks” from loved ones in Spirit such as the memories/images I describe here are like calling cards from the other side. They announce the arrival of a visitor, and alert us to prepare ourselves for a visit by consciously shifting our awareness.

Dear Soul Arcanum:

Whenever I speak with Mediums or read what they have to say about communicating with Spirit, they say you have to raise your vibration to Spirit’s level. How do you do this? After my father crossed over, I heard him say my name. This only happened once, and I really don’t know what I did differently at that time to receive this communication. Is there a way to practice raising your vibration? Thank you!
Chris

Dear Chris:

We all go through periods when we’re down and the whole world seems gloomy, and we all gone through periods when everything in the world seems beautiful, wonderful and full of unlimited potential. The difference is in our vibration. To feel “low” or “down” is to have a low vibration, and to feel “up” or “high” is to have a high vibration. When we’re feeling gloomy, we may have a hard time seeing any aspect of the divine, but when we’re soaring, the whole world glows with divine light. To consciously connect with Spirit, we have to be in this “higher” state.

Anything you do that induces “up” feelings such as reverence, appreciation, joy, hope, vitality, peace, love, etc., will raise your vibration. Conversely, anything you do that leads to “low” feelings like anger, sorrow, guilt, hatred, despair, fear, jealousy and frustration will lower your vibration. On a mental level, thoughts that are expansive, constructive, affirming and progressive will raise your vibration. Thoughts that are limiting, invalidating, destructive and regressive will lower your vibration. At a physical level, habits that increase the strength, health and balance of the body will raise your vibration, while habits that weaken, disrupt and imbalance the energy of the body will lower your vibration.

At a spiritual level, the more you embrace love, the more you raise your vibration. Fundamentally, this basic formula is also true at all the other levels, it’s just trickier to see how eating healthfully is loving the temple of your body, and how allowing yourself to stay in grief or sorrow is ultimately unloving of yourself. As we must be at a high vibration to connect with Spirit, most people experience spontaneous spirit communication not when they’re aching for it out of grief and sorrow, but when they’re remembering their loved one with profound affection and appreciation. This is the key you’re looking for. When we ache for communication, our vibration is generally too low to actually receive it.

Remember: what you do to raise your energy at one level will affect your energy overall, so there is always a way to shift gears and move higher, even when you’re stuck in some area of your life.

As for conscious spirit communication, most mediums’ lives are studies in maintaining a high vibration all the time. When it comes to spirit communication, they’ll have learned or developed their own personal techniques for shifting their consciousness and raising their energy even higher in order to “tune in” to this desired frequency. This usually involves some sort of prayer and/ or meditation, an example of which you’ll find below. First, however, I offer you a few of the endless simple ways you can build a high vibration into the foundation of your daily life:

  • Exercise! From running to yoga to rock climbing, exercise is will rev your energy up.
  • Cleaning, organizing, practicing feng shui, taking a shower or bath (don’t you always feel better after you bathe?)
  • Eating light, high vibration foods like fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Taking a nap/ sleeping (When we go to sleep, we shed the weight of resistance, and thus our vibration rises)
  • Praying, practicing creative visualization, using affirmations, reading uplifting books, practicing gratitude
  • Singing, especially with others, or listening to new age/ uplifting music
  • Breathwork/ yogic breathing
  • Going for a walk in nature or spending time near water
  • Surrounding ourselves with uplifting, positive people, or with a beautiful, peaceful or happy environment
  • Practicing forgiveness, giving and receiving healing, doing kind things for others
  • Practicing aromatherapy (great scents for prophecy include nutmeg, clove, clary sage, angelica root, verbena)
  • Practicing a guided meditation for raising our vibration, or surrounding ourselves with “white light” (there are some great ones in Soul Arcanum’s Spiritual Toolbox)
  • Endless others, such as watching a comedy, making love, holding a happy baby, spending time in the sun, asking Spirit to raise our vibration, accepting and blessing everything in our lives, giving gifts, being polite, playing with kids or friends or animals, etc.

As I mentioned above, the best way to open to communication from a specific loved one in Spirit is to simply remember them with love and joy. Wallow in happy memories of them, and with joy in your heart, invite them to visit you. The guided meditation below should get you into an ideal state of consciousness for either spirit communication with loved ones or accessing answers and information from guides. Shift into this higher gear, then turn on the love, and magic will happen!

Guided Meditation for Raising your Vibration:

First, relax. Make sure you’re comfortable, whether that means you’re sitting erect with your spine straight, or lying comfortably on your favorite sofa. Breathe deep into your belly, and take as long as you need to relax every muscle in your body. Don’t rush: you’ll get out of this what you put into it.

Now as you breathe, feel yourself expanding with each inhalation like a lovely, big balloon. You’re growing lighter and lighter, to the point where you’re just barely touching whatever is beneath you. One more breath in and poof! You’re airborne. Each breath now takes you a little higher. You’re floating up and up towards the clouds above you. It’s exhilarating! As you look around, you can see many kindred spirits, all doing the same thing: raising their vibration in prayer or in thanksgiving, consciously connecting with Spirit.

Up and up you go above the tree tops, and now you’re heading straight for the clouds. How soft and misty they are as you pass through them, how pure and white. Now suddenly you’re above the clouds, and it is so amazingly bright! It’s a whole new world up here in the warm, golden sun. Delighted, you realize that you can look down and see anything and anyone you desire below as the clouds float by. You can see the big picture so clearly now. It’s easy to see the best way to get from one place to another on Earth from up here. It’s all so simple. You can see how this frightened mother is going to run right into her lost little girl as she turns that next corner, and how that man who is walking sadly away from a failed marriage is heading straight for a beautiful new lover, one with long red hair. From up here, you deeply know that all is truly well. You smile at angels and spirit guides as they hustle about, whispering insights and intuitions and nudging people this way and that way, and these guides wave to you with delight at your ability to perceive them.

You are thrilled, for you know that you can ask anything you desire and get an answer! You know you can call out to anyone in Spirit, and someone will respond. It may not always be the one you’re seeking, but you always get an answer, and you trust it’s the answer that is perfect for you at that moment. Your heart is swelling with the wonder of it all. You feel so light, so free, so full of hope and peace and excitement for all the possibilities that are open to you when you’re soaring high above it all.

You’re now wonderfully connected and ready to ask whatever you desire for yourself and for anyone who needs your help. Your heart and spirit are soaring and ready for magic! Go on and ask whatever you desire, and know that as you ask, you shall receive.

(I’m working on a series of recordings designed to guide you in achieving the right state of mind and being for spirit communication, as obviously, it’s not quite as simple as the article above may intimate. By the time you come to read this article, it may already be available at Soul Arcanum.)

Effects of Alcohol on Spirit Communication

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I find, embarrassingly enough, that I feel closer to the spirits of dead loved ones after having a drink or two! I feel bad about this, but wonder if I should. In your opinion, can moderate use of alcohol increase psychic abilities or enhance spirit communication?

W.

Dear W.:

You are not the first person to experience this, and you should not feel bad about it any more than you should feel bad about getting rid of a headache by taking pain reliever or breaking out in hives when you have an allergic reaction to something. It’s actually a natural side effect of mild intoxication, and your embarrassment and puzzlement is probably more a reflection of your socialization than spiritual truth. A long time ago, Christians got it into their heads that “spirit” was good and “physical” was bad, and we’ve viewed the two as disjointed in the West ever since. In truth, the physical reflects and affects the spiritual, and vice versa. So what you ingest will naturally affect you spiritually, mentally, emotionally, etc.

While there are valid positive reasons to abstain from drugs and alcohol, we would all be wise to examine the beliefs we’ve developed about mind altering substances. In the West, most people have negative associations with drugs and alcohol (though that doesn’t stop us from using them). In other cultures, this is not the case. Throughout history around the world, many cultures have traditionally ingested something in order to commune with gods or the divine. From the wine and bread of communion to the trance-inducing peyote of South American shamans, this is an honored tradition seemingly as old as mankind. In fact, in shamanistic cultures, trance-inducing plants (drugs) are not considered destructive, but are honored and revered as gifts from the gods, left here to help us connect with higher planes. Drugs like peyote and ayahuasca are said to induce spirit communication, clairvoyance and healing abilities. So please remember that there is no one “right” answer to this question. If you asked a shaman, he may push your wine glass aside and offer you ‘shrooms instead.

Drugs and alcohol facilitate spirit communication because when you have a drink or two, you begin to relax. If you’re a very logical person who is always “in control,” then the only time you may experience freedom from your strict inner censor is when you’re sleeping, dreaming or under the influence of some mind altering chemical. Someone who has a lot of natural psychic or mediumship ability but who was raised in a family or culture that demonized or invalidated it would actually be predisposed to the sort of experience you’re having. Similarly, most people are very left-brained, and spirit communication and other psychic abilities are right brain functions. Various drugs and alcohol impair the left brain first and/or enhance right brain activity, so we are more likely to have mystical or psychic experiences while under the influence.

Despite all of this, I have never used any hallucinogenic drugs of any kind. I have studied with some of the best teachers of mediumship in the world, however, and since they’ve been right about everything else, I am happy to pass their advice on to you. The general consensus among these experts is that there are better ways to approach spirit communication.

First, initiating spirit communication while even mildly intoxicated is like driving under the influence. Both activities can be dangerous, so you need to have your wits about you and remain in control. As strange as this may at first sound, we don’t leave our addictions behind when we pass on. Many people who are of low spiritual vibration also have physical addictions, and when they depart this life, they end up in the lower astral, where they remain until they develop themselves beyond this level. When you open up to spirit communication and you have been drinking, it’s like throwing open the saloon door and yelling to a crowd of thirsty alcoholics, “Bar’s open and drinks are on (in) me!” Lower astral entities will race to experience alcohol vicariously through you. (I believe this is why alcohol is also called “spirits.”) As it is easier for spirits to influence you when you’re intoxicated, and these spirits tend to be “low lifes,” this is very unwise indeed. If an alcoholic in the astral attaches itself to you, you can also quickly become an “alcoholic” yourself. You’d then feel like you just couldn’t stop yourself, and you’d be right: someone else would be controlling you.

When it comes to reading for others, it’s even more important to be in the proper frame of mind. First, to give a good (accurate) reading, you need excellent integration of the right and left brain functions, so being intoxicated, which cripples the left brain, is not going to help! Interestingly enough, one of the the best ways to integrate right and left brain functions is by practicing meditation. (Sound familiar?)

In addition to skill, we must consider responsibility. I will never read if I’ve been drinking or even if I’m not feeling my best for the same reasons I don’t drink and drive. If I did, not only would I put myself in a compromised position, but someone else may get hurt. I know that I have tremendous influence over whoever I’m reading for. Most clients will hang on my every word as gospel, and emotionally invest so much in the messages I bring through both from loved ones in Spirit and higher intelligences that their long-term well-being could very well hinge on what I say. For some people, I am their last hope: they have tried everything else they could think of, and still not found the peace and healing their souls are starving for. It takes a tremendous extension of trust for someone to confide their deepest feelings and worries in me; the least I can do is honor that trust by being as responsible as I can be.

I am also very mindful of what I do, think, say and ingest even when I’m not “working,” for this is part of “the job.” Just as a professional athlete must train even when he’s not playing in a game, a spiritual counselor must remain in “peak spiritual condition.” As everyone is psychic and capable of spirit communication to various degrees, a key reason people actually pay me for my services instead of tuning in themselves is because they do not want to make all the sacrifices and undertake all the disciplines that would be required for them to develop their own skills to the same degree. To achieve spirit communication, one must maintain a very high vibration, which for most people means eating a healthy diet; regular physical conditioning (exercise), meditation and spiritual study; extraordinary dedication to personal growth and emotional mastery, which includes abstaining from negative thoughts and emotions and immoral or harmful acts; and abstaining from substances that can lower our vibration such as drugs, alcohol, junk food, cigarettes, etc.

Fortunately, you don’t really need the alcohol to achieve spirit communication. Your experience reflects the truth that in order to connect with Spirit, you just need to relax and shift your consciousness so that your left brain doesn’t filter out all that is real and yet often unperceived. While you’re free to choose the path of the shaman and the use of mind altering substances, I strongly advise you against doing so unless you have a very experienced and trustworthy mentor. Personally, I recommend the Spiritualist path of sound personal spiritual development including meditation and good old-fashioned clean living, for as is true of so much in life, when we try to take short-cuts, we often end up lost and wish we’d taken the safe, sure path in the first place.

Death is a Dream: What the “Dead” have Taught Me about the Afterlife

copyright Soul Arcanum LLC, 1999
The ability to communicate with those who have passed into the nonphysical or “died” gives a person a unique perspective on life and death. Working as a medium has blessed me with the opportunity to communicate with many in the spirit world. Often through the years, as clients have thanked me heartily for bringing through a loved one, I have found myself sincerely returning their gratitude for the opportunity to “meet” the spirits who came through for them. I have learned a great deal from these communications about the nature of life and “death.”

While every “death” or afterlife experience is as unique as each life experience, there are some common themes or elements to life beyond. The following article presents some basic principles based on what I’ve learned through my own experiences with spirit communication.

Most people who are grieving need to know that we continue on. If they knew this already, they wouldn’t be grieving, or at least, they wouldn’t be in emotional pain. One thing my experiences with spirit have taught me is that we do continue on beyond this physical life. I know it because I have seen and heard and felt “strangers” in spirit who showed me their lives, gave me their names, showed me how they passed on, showed me the houses they lived in while living, and/or other “evidence” that was verified by my clients in the physical.

Everything in the universe is energy, and energy can not be destroyed. It can be contained or transformed, but it never ceases to exist in some form. The best analogy I have for the afterlife is that of our dream lives. When we dream, we generally are not aware of dreaming. Our dream worlds are as real to us as our physical realities. “Strange” things happen in dreams because it is a less “physical” or dense reality than our waking world is. It is not governed by the same laws of time and space as physical reality. This is also true of the afterlife.

Where Do We Go?

Where do we go when we dream? Are we “gone?” Do we cease to exist while sleeping? Clearly this is not the case. Our minds are simply in a different state of consciousness, and our focus is on a realm of experience we are not normally conscious of while awake. This is also true of the afterlife. We continue to exist, but our consciousness is focused on a realm of existence that we are not normally aware of when in the physical.

Where we go when we die is difficult to try to imagine or convey, for the afterlife does not exist out there somewhere, in the sky, or in some far off place. The afterlife and other planes of existence (there are many) interpenetrate this plane. Even this description is inaccurate, but our language is based on presumptions of space and time. There is no physical distance between us and those we love in spirit. There are infinite parallel realities existing holographically everywhere at once. We have only to achieve energetic harmony with a plane and focus our attention there to be aware of it.

I like to use the spectrum of colors as an analogy. Our physical eyes can perceive light in frequencies that create colors between red and violet. We know that infrared exists below the red we can see, and that ultraviolet exists above this spectrum. There is light in frequencies that you can not see all around you. There are ultraviolet rays affecting and interacting with your skin cells even now, though you can’t see them. If you were able to train your eyes to see beyond the physical color spectrum, you would be able to see ultraviolet rays as color, just as you see other colors. Those who can communicate with spirits in the afterlife have trained their mental awareness to perceive that which lies beyond the physical spectrum.

How Do We Get There?

Many people wonder what happens when we die. How do we go from here to there? Is there a period of no awareness, like when we’re in deep sleep? Of course, no one can claim to have the definite answers to these questions, but what I’ve learned suggests that death is very much like life. Just as in life, our beliefs and expectations shape our experiences of the death process, and even our experiences in the next life. As in dreams and astral projection, the results of our thoughts are much more immediate than in the physical. We think something and often experience near instantaneous results, where in the physical, it takes a pattern or habit of thought, or intense emotion backing thought, to personally or consciously create experiences.

This can be both comforting and disconcerting at the same time. Many cling to religion because it holds the promise of definitive answers, and suggests that there is an absolute set of laws or rules that we can understand and follow to go to “heaven” or achieve some other aim. This idea is comforting, though a bit limiting. Knowing that we are creating our own realities and experiences can be empowering and freeing, but also scary. It’s a bit like being a child versus being an adult. If we believe someone “out there” is calling the shots and taking care of us, we may tend to feel safer but powerless. If we accept that we are creating our own lives (and deaths!) as we go along, we may feel both exhilarated and overwhelmed by the responsibility and the vastness of the potentialities.

We do create our own experiences in life through our beliefs, expectations, and interpretations of our experiences. Similarly, we create our own experiences in death. Those who believe in life after death tend to have a much smoother transition from this life to the next. They expect to continue on, and usually have a belief system that enables them to interpret their experiences. For example, the same nonphysical benevolent entity may be interpreted by one who is “dying” as an angel, Jesus, a revered ancestor, or an alien, depending on the perceiver’s belief system. Someone who does not believe in life after death may be afraid of those who come to help, or may be so blocked by disbelief that they are unable to even perceive others in spirit. Those people who expect to continue on are generally met by a loved one in spirit or another kind entity who leads them to a light, a place or a being of infinite love and peace.

The more spiritually evolved we are while living, the faster and higher we move in the nonphysical planes beyond death. Very unloving or “un-evolved” (for lack of a better term) individuals exist at the low end of the physical energetic spectrum. These are the souls that tend to become “earthbound.” Their energy is too “heavy” to abide in higher planes. These souls will either hang around in the lower astral until their energy changes, or they’ll reincarnate, evolve, and move on after more earth experiences.

Those who don’t believe we continue on, who believe they will go to hell, or who live in great fear of death, often temporarily experience “hellish” experiences. This is where our visions of hell come from. Of course, we can also create these same kinds of experiences through fear while in the physical. It’s important to understand that all of this is temporary. Just as we can go through difficult or “terrible” times while living, so too can we create the same in the afterlife. Fear fuels such experiences. The only thing to fear is truly fear itself. Those who live in such fear will continue to attract those kinds of experiences until they work through the fear, and are in harmony with a higher vibration of experience. Just as we have social workers, ministers, healers, etc…, who work with those living in “hell” in the physical, so too are there helpers and guides in the nonphysical who try to guide lost souls toward greater light and understanding.

How Does Death Change Us?

People die very much as they lived, and continue to live after death as they did in life, with the exception that death raises us above the drama of physical life, giving us the “big picture” perspective on things. If a father is angry with his son for being gay in this life, for example, this almost never carries over into the non-physical. In death, the details no longer continue to matter. That same father would see from his new perspective that it was his own fears that had fueled his anger, and he would care much more how happy and at peace his son was than about the details of his son’s life.

It’s a bit like the feelings we have when we leave a movie theater. The details of the plot don’t really continue to affect us, but we are left with a lingering feeling. Some movies uplift us, some dishearten us. Some are so beautifully executed that we are inspired. These can be comedies, action movies, love stories. The point is, if it’s well-done, we appreciate it. The same can be said of lifetimes; if a life is well-lived, even if it was full of drama, it creates an overall feeling of power and value. Even if the life/drama was about a criminal who committed heinous crimes, we can be moved and inspired if he later takes responsibility for his actions and seeks forgiveness, especially from himself.

Communicating from Beyond

Spirit once gave me a great metaphor for understanding how death changes our perceptions. The same metaphor applies to spirit communication, whether done personally or channeled through a medium. I was shown that being in the physical is like being in a thick forest. We know we want to get to the river (the river symbolizes whatever it is we’re wanting in our lives), but we’re not sure how to get there from where we are. If we rise above the level of the trees, however, and look down, we can see where we’ve been, where we’re presently headed, and most importantly, how to get to the river. In this way, loved ones in spirit are able to see the “big picture,” and guide us in our lives on earth. They also are much less “lost” themselves than when they were here, for they’ve been released from the limitations and dramas of physical life.

Mourning

Occasionally I hear from someone who very much wants communication with a loved one in spirit, but who fears that it is a sin to seek this, or fears that by grieving or reaching out, they are holding their loved one to earth. I believe that our intentions are everything, especially when it comes to spiritual matters. If our intentions are loving, and we are able to achieve what we desire, then it must be good. Actions motivated by fear tend to reap undesired results.

It’s not wise to worry about loved ones, for then we simply send negative energy toward them, imagining unwanted things for them. It is wonderful, however, to think of them and miss them with great love and appreciation. This is similar to “praying” for them, for they truly do bask in that positive energy. It is when I’m with someone and they are thinking with love of someone in spirit that those loved ones in spirit most readily draw close or come through spontaneously.

Very often loved ones in spirit are seeking communication just as we seek it with them. This does not mean that the spirits “mourn” losing us. This is very rare. It would be like us falling asleep and dreaming, and longing for our waking reality. We may love our lives, and appreciate the people in them, but when we’re dreaming, we’re usually fully focused in the present (the dream). If someone calls us to wake up while we’re dreaming, we may even long to remain in the dream, but we will awaken to speak to those who love us and who are seeking contact. Similarly, loved ones in spirit do hear us. They might not “rouse” themselves at our every emotional whisper, but when we get “loud” or intense with our feelings, they will “wake up” or focus their attention from their afterlife experiences to our plane of existence.

Hearing Spirit

Just because they do pay attention, however, doesn’t mean we can always perceive them. Many people will cry out in mourning for a loved one, and be despondent that the person is “gone,” when their loved one is there the whole time with them. Because they are in sorrow or fear, they are not in harmony with their loved one, so the loved one can not connect with them.

Often when this goes on for a while, the spirit will week a medium out. Yes, you read that right. Often spirits will lead their loved ones to a medium, so that the medium can relay messages. Spirit once showed me that being in the non-physical is a bit like being on the “seeing” side of a two-way mirror. They can “see” us, but most of us only see a reflection or mirror when we look back. Spirits might be energetically “waving” and “shouting,” but most of us do not perceive their presence at all. Imagine then, if such spirits saw one of us (a medium or sensitive) turn toward them and begin to respond. Spirits get very excited when we can hear them!

Spirits will do all kinds of things to try to get our attention, especially when we’re asking with our hearts for contact or communication. As everything is energy, and spirits are energy unbound by physical laws, often electrical appliances or means are used. I’ve heard all kinds of stories over the years about lights flickering or coming on by themselves, spirits speaking through or appearing on televisions, and appliances turning themselves on and off. This is far more common than most people might think.

Spirit also speaks to us through our own hearts and intuition. Often when we have a crazy impulse to do something, there is a spirit behind the impulse. If we’re paying attention, spirit will sometimes even speak to us through another person who is not aware that this is happening. This often happens in small ways, like when we’re seeking direction on practical matters. We may be looking for to sublet an apartment for the summer, for example, and overhear a woman in line at the grocery store say, “I hope to be able to sublet my place for the summer.” It may be more subtle than this. We may be seeking general answers in our lives and find those answers in the casual or offhand remarks of others. These kinds of “coincidences” happen all the time, and are often the result of Spirit help.

People often asks about their pets in spirit. While wild animals tend to remain on the “fringes” of where I go when I seek spirits, domesticated animals often come through for those who loved them, and those they love. The energetic connections of love are similar to those between humans.

Suicide

I saw the movie “What Dreams May Come” when it came out, and it disturbed me. What bothered me most was that there was so much truth in the movie about what life on the other side is like, but the portrayal of suicide was, so far as I know, distressing and inaccurate. The fact that the rest of the movie was so true left me concerned that its take on suicide would be swept up and accepted with the rest of it. Such a movie has a powerful influence on mass beliefs. (And remember, our beliefs and expectations shape our experiences here and beyond!)

The movie suggested that if we commit suicide, we are damned to hell, and will never be reunited with our loved ones again. I can only imagine how disturbing such a belief might be to someone who loved someone who had committed suicide. One has to be very “lost” to commit suicide in the first place. As we live in life, so we live in death. Suicides tend to remain very “lost” on the other side for a while, but nothing in the Universe is static or permanent.

We are ever changing in life, and ever changing in death. Some suicides can even immediately see things more clearly on the other side, and experience a sense of relief. This is especially true if the person believed in an afterlife, and also believed that they would not be “punished” for taking their own life. This is not generally the case, but again, it’s all a matter of beliefs and expectations. No one who commits suicide is “condemned by God.” They have already condemned themselves. There is love and compassion in Spirit (as in life) for those who take their own lives, we have only to ACCEPT it. Someone who takes his or her own life is generally filled with self-loathing. Such a person cannot allow themselves love, forgiveness and compassion when living, and it is not likely they will allow this after death, at least, not at first.

It is never advisable, of course, to take one’s own life. It is impossible, however, to truly “kill” or destroy oneself. We can try to run from our problems and lessons, but doing so tends to just give them room to grow bigger.

In summary

Of course, I can’t profess to know personally what death is like, I can only relay what those who live in the next life have shown me. Even then, it is like I stand at the doorway between this life and the next; I can only see that which lies just beyond that doorway. Perhaps there are those who know what spirit life is like when spirits are not communicating with us on earth. I can’t see that far now and don’t expect to be able to, at least, not until I am born into the next life myself.
