Tired Sensitive is Overwhelmed by Voices and Visions

Dear Soul Arcanum:

When I go to bed at night and close my eyes, I see many people. For a long time I’d see a random stranger’s face while falling asleep. This went on for years, and then over the last year it has escalated. Now when I go to sleep, if it’s not faces, it’s voices. I hear people talking and having conversations. One night I heard two men having an in depth conversation about old cars. I don’t know these voices. I’ve moved out of town into a rural setting, and I live alone. Usually these conversations are boring and I feel like I’m wasting my energy with all of this. When this happens, I do something I learned in a meditation class: I ground myself and ask everyone to leave. This helps but it is getting harder and harder to do. Last night, I saw a man I’ve never seen before. He was looking at me and smiling at me. He was all in white, like a white robe with a white thing around his head. Why is this happening to me? How can I get it to stop? I’m not schizophrenic; I’m psychic but have never had time to develop my abilities. I work full-time and am exhausted. If you were to pick my letter to answer, it would be a blessing. Thank you.
Rose

Dear Rose:

You would be amazed at how many people have the same experiences as they’re falling asleep, for when we quiet our minds and go within, we close out the input of the physical realm and open up to awareness of All That Is. It may comfort you to know that all of this exists when you’re wide awake – your mind is just too focused on the physical to notice this subtle input. When people who are sensitive quiet their minds, they naturally begin to perceive all sorts of things that escape others’ awareness. Hearing voices is not unusual; it’s only when one can’t cope with hearing voices that mental health issues arise. Instead of passively watching and listening to all of this strange stuff, the key to greater peace of mind is for you to empower yourself to manifest the quality of experience you desire.

To rid yourself of this tiresome pattern, you’ll have to learn to focus your mind and gain greater control of your receiver, so to speak. You say you haven’t had time to develop your mental powers, and I believe you’re being pushed to put this higher on your list of priorities. (You’re uncomfortable now because you’ve been fighting this idea for a long time.) If you want things to improve, you can’t continue to put this off. Otherwise, you’re like a person who is physically out of shape who complains that she gets winded every time she climbs a flight of stairs but also makes no time for exercise. To gain more control over what happens in your mind, you’re going to have to make time for mental/ spiritual development.

There are endless theories about what it is you’re picking up on. Some say these visions and voices come from the spirits of people who have died, while others say they are people who exist in another dimension, space or time. Some believe them to be spirit guides and angels; devils and demons; fairies and elves or even aliens. Scientific types tend to view them as snippets from our own subconscious minds, while paranoid folks fear they are the work of government agencies or occultists bent on mind control. You may also be picking up on the private thoughts of other people in this or other dimensions, or remembering snippets from past lives – the possibilities are endless.

It’s important to discern if these voices seem to be talking to you and/or about you or if you are just overhearing them. It sounds like you’re mainly overhearing them, which suggests you are picking up on sounds from another place or dimension.

Imagine that your mind is like a radio. When we learn how to control the mind, we develop the power to focus on what we want to focus on, and via meditation, how to quiet the mind as well. To ease into this, you might begin by consciously focusing on something in particular as you fall asleep at night. If this is challenging, you can try a guided meditation or hypnotherapy recording. Some recordings will help you to fall into a deep, restful sleep, while others will simultaneously guide you in achieving some other desirable aim as you’re drifting off. Once you get the hang of this, you can skip the recording and run your own mental program.

For example, when I have trouble falling asleep, I often visualize what I want to manifest in my life. This is not the same thing as worrying about all I have to do the next day; I just imagine my life as I desire it to be. This has two great benefits. First, I’ve never found anything that puts me to sleep faster – the next thing I know, I’m waking up in the morning. Second, this is a very powerful time to work with the law of attraction. We’re in a relaxed, trancelike state, and since we’re doing this before we go to sleep, we’re programming our subconscious minds to help us manifest what we desire while we slumber. Then we may have an enlightening dream or wake up with a new idea and the fresh energy we need to make good progress the next day.

Another favorite of mine is to count my blessings: Instead of counting sheep, I begin to mentally list all the things I’m grateful for. This raises my vibration and helps me to focus my mental and creative energy on maintaining all the positives in my life.

Obviously, however, not all of what you’re perceiving is random. I feel the man in white who was smiling at you is a spirit guide. (Spirit guides tend to appear all in white like this, and of course they are naturally kind and friendly.) He may have shown up in answer to your prayers for help with these phenomena, which is perfect, since one of my main suggestions for gaining control of unwanted spirit communication is to develop a strong conscious relationship with your spirit guides. I don’t have room to go into working with your spirit guides here, but there is a lot of information about that available elsewhere.

In addition to working with your spirit guides, you can try to communicate with any other spirits who make contact with you in this way. One young woman heard voices like this for years: She’d hear snippets of conversations, music, noises, etc., none of which seemed to have anything to do with her. Then one night it occurred to her to ask (out loud) what the two people she could hear were talking about, and they actually answered her!

If these are spirits who intuit that you are sensitive and will be able to perceive them, it may greatly help you to speak to them and ask them if there is something you can do to help them. If they are troubling you late at night, then set aside time during the day for just this purpose. You might wake up 15 minutes early and tell any spirits that pop in that you’ll be happy to speak to them in the morning. I know this sounds nuts, but it has helped many budding mediums to get a good night’s sleep and take control of their experiences.

There is so much that you can do to transform this pattern. If nothing you try brings relief, you can always see a hypnotherapist. If there are conscious entities involved, they should make themselves known again when you’re in deep trance, and then the therapist can dialogue with them and work out a remedy. Whichever approach you choose, I feel if you set aside more time and energy for this during regular waking hours, you won’t be deluged with psychic input at the end of the day.

Startling Parallels in Karmic Soul Connections

Dear Soul Arcanum:

It has been a very long road since my husband John’s death, and now that I’ve moved on and found new love, I’ve been trying to figure out how my husband John and boyfriend Michael are connected, for they have many similarities in terms of their likes, expressions and even some aspects of the way they look. I didn’t see any of this upon first meeting Michael, but I did feel an instant sense of recognition. Since then, I’ve been trying to figure out the connection, and after reading some of your articles, it dawned on me that the three of us may have been one soul before, and now we’ve divided into different bodies. Do you think that’s possible? Thanks for sharing your light!
– T.

Dear T.

You’ve reminded me of something strange that happened to me a long time ago. I haven’t told anyone about this before because it’s pretty far out.

My first love, Todd, was on the short side and very stocky/muscular. He had a strong jaw and an unusual scar on his right shoulder. It’s called a keloid scar, and it looked like a raised, reddish bubble about the size of a grape. He was very into rock and roll, and was in a rock band. Though he hid it from everyone (including me), he also had a major problem with drug and alcohol addiction. He was born on January 16, 1967.

Todd died very unexpectedly at the age of 18, and it was due to the incredible experiences I had around the time of his death that I began to question the nature of reality and ponder some big spiritual questions.

I left for college about 18 months after he died, and was placed in a dorm room right next door to that of a young man named Dan. I felt a very strong karmic connection to Dan right away. Here’s where things bend so far beyond the scope of coincidence that any sane, reasonable person has to wonder what the heck is going on.

Dan had the same stocky build Todd had had, the same strong jaw, and he was also into rock and roll. In fact, he played a mean electric guitar, which was really unusual at the very conservative university we were attending. I was soon to learn that Dan also had a serious alcohol addiction.

As I mentioned, I felt a very strong connection to him and he seemed to feel an equally strong attraction to me. We soon became lovers, and that’s when I discovered that he had a scar on his right shoulder that was identical to the one Todd had had in the same place. I could feel something strange rippling beneath the surface here, and without consciously thinking about it, I found myself asking him when he was born.

When he told me he was born on January 16, 1967 – the exact same day that Todd was born – my mind was just totally blown. As I tried to wrap my head around all these amazing parallels, I remembered something that Todd’s mother had told me the first time I met her. At that time it had been a subject of mild interest, but now it was like a flashing neon sign in my mind. She’d told me that Todd was her “miracle baby” because he’d had a twin who had died in the womb.

While I knew this was a really far out idea, I naturally began to wonder if Dan could be Todd’s twin somehow. Perhaps they had intended to be born to the same mother, but then Dan decided that a different body and family situation would better serve his soul’s needs.

I’ve since studied a lot of past life regression research and learned that people who are regressed to the period between lives consistently report that we have a choice about the bodies and families we’ll be born into. However, there are only so many bodies available, so we have to try to find the best fit for us given various factors. If something went wrong with the body of the twin, Dan may have had to find an alternative. Of course, it’s possible that he changed his mind first and when he withdrew his life force energy, the body of the twin stopped growing.

I certainly felt a very strong sense of connection to both of these young men the instant I met them, though at that time, I didn’t know what that strange feeling was. I now believe that our deep karmic connection naturally drew us into each other’s experience again.

As for how all of this may work, when I ponder the idea of reincarnation, I keep returning to a model of the incarnating soul that mirrors biological cellular division. We know that living cells divide into new “incarnations,” which divide into further incarnations, so it makes sense to me to assume that the metaphysical mirrors the physical, and that the same dynamic happens on a spiritual level.

This model resonates with me for many reasons. In fact, it explains all sorts of phenomena. For example:

  • It’s in harmony with the notion that “God” is both our Source and is everywhere and in everything.

  • It explains the universal spiritual teaching that we are all ultimately One: all from one Source and all connected on some level. Just as the cells in our bodies have all grown from the same fertilized egg, our souls have all grown from the same Divine spirit.

  • It explains how more than one person could remember living the same past life, that incarnation having occurred before that spirit divided into more spirits. It also illuminates the dynamic behind the notion of spiritual families, the members of which would be more directly or recently descended from the same ancestor spirits.

  • It explains the keen sense of connection and recognition we feel with some people, these being those we were more recently at one with.

  • It explains how reincarnation could be true despite the fact that the population of the planet is increasing, for there are ever more souls to incarnate than there used to be.

  • It jibes with our awareness that on a spiritual level, we are immortal, for we are forever expanding into new experiences, world without end. It is our nature to go forth and multiply. It also mirrors our awareness that the Universe is ever expanding.

If your mind can handle a bit more stretching, try this on for size: perhaps to each cell in our bodies, the whole of who we are is “God,” and similarly, what we consider to be God is a living entity of which we are a tiny aspect. The microcosm mirrors the macrocosm.

I don’t know that this is how it works, of course – no one can say for sure. It’s just a mental model that may explain some of the strange things we experience in karmic relationships.

When Sudden Psychic Development Feels Scary or Overwhelming

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)
Dear Soul Arcanum:

Recently I’ve been seeing things that aren’t normal. I don’t think I’m seeing ghosts, but I do think I see spirits everywhere. These appear to me in many forms, such as mists, sparkles, hazy spots, orbs, etc. I even see them at work and outside. I am also hyper aware of the energies around me. This seems to be increasing, and now I’m starting to hear things – maybe a spirit guide? I’m getting used to this during the day, but I’m terrified at night. In fact, I’ve been sleeping with the lights on. I don’t think I have prayed this much in my entire life! I just want somebody who understands all of this to give me some guidance. Am I psychic whether I like it or not, or am I supposed to decide if I want to keep going in this direction? Is this for the rest of my life? Can I turn it off if I want? I don’t know what I’m supposed to do, and I’m very scared and confused at times. Thank you for your time. – Alicia

Dear Alicia:

Please don’t worry! I have been down this very same road and counseled many fellow travelers, and I can reassure you that what you’re experiencing is indeed normal, and everything will be fine. Though you may not feel like it right now, the fact that you are questioning all of this as you are suggests that you are relatively grounded and psychologically stable.

The way you are perceiving spirits is also verifying, for this is how I generally perceive spirits as well. Most people assume that mediums see spirits much as they are portrayed on television – as opaque or misty people – but in my experience, this is rarely the case. Instead, when we perceive them with our physical eyes, they often appear as mists or balls of energy, and it is within our minds that they telepathically tell us who they are or show us what they looked like when they were alive.

My own psychic awakening happened quite suddenly too, and in the beginning, I saw all sorts of strange beings, such as a demon and a creepy, naked little man or djinn. I was also seeing stuff everywhere and questioning my sanity! When I learned that the only thing to fear is fear itself, and that the key to having higher spiritual experiences was to raise my vibration, then I began to spontaneously receive visits from regular people in spirit.

The first was my grandmother, who appeared as a big misty haze of purple energy hovering about three feet above the floor. It didn’t seem strange or scary while it was happening, but I was overcome with a wave of love. My grandmother visited me a number of times after this, and then I began to have spirits show up for other people.

This usually occurred when someone was either talking wistfully about the spirit in question or their family in general. One man was telling me about his family’s history, and though he hadn’t mentioned his aunt, she came right through. Another time a friend was talking about her brother who had died, and he showed up as a ball of energy next to her. As these spirits appeared, they would talk to me telepathically or send images into my mind.

I don’t see spirits everywhere, nor do I see them all the time; I usually have to be in an altered state of consciousness for this to happen. Based on my own experiences, I don’t think all of what you’re seeing are spirits – as in a person who was once alive in the physical but has crossed over to the afterlife. I think you’re also seeing other subtle energies, which may include conscious beings such as nature spirits, angels and other inhuman astral entities, as well as simpler energies such as auric interactions, thought forms, emotional currents, structures in the astral, etc.

There are ways to turn your psychic senses off, but since they can offer you so many blessings, why not just learn to control them? I consciously created some compartmentalization in my life many years ago so that I wouldn’t be open to spirits all the time. This involved years of intense training in the Spiritualist tradition, lots of independent spiritual study and practice, and the development of a strong relationship with Spirit and my guides.

While the same combination may work for you, it’s important to note that this was not something I thought up; instead, I asked Spirit to guide me, and I followed my intuitions and the signs and synchronicities that flowed in. The most important thing is for you to develop your own clear, trusting relationship with Spirit, God, Divine Intelligence – whatever term you prefer. That way you can ask for whatever you need in any moment, and relax with faith that you will be guided every step of the way.

You don’t have to become a professional psychic or medium or do anything you don’t want to do – the important thing is that you follow your own heart and do what calls to you personally. Just because your psychic senses are roaring now, that doesn’t mean you must build your life around them. Often psychic abilities burst through as a side effect of sudden spiritual development, and if they’re not cultivated, they fade into the background as you settle into a new vibration. In time, all that you’re experiencing will naturally grow more subtle and internal, so instead of seeing these spirits and energies with your physical eyes, they’ll become more like daydreams that play through your mind.

Everyone I know who has been psychically open for some time has learned to gain control of their experiences. Many of those people were also scared and overwhelmed in the beginning like you are, but as they gained spiritual knowledge and experience, they learned to believe in their own perceptions and trust that they were being guided.

Sometimes far out spiritual experiences have no deeper meaning or higher purpose because they’re not coming to us – instead, we are stumbling into strange new territory where all sorts of unusual creatures and possibilities exist in abundance. It’s sort of like wandering into a zoo and seeing elephants and lions and then wondering what it all means and why it’s happening to you. (It’s happening because you’re in a zoo!)

Certainly this sort of thing will make you question what you believe to be real and true about the nature of so-called reality. If you have never seen a lion before and didn’t believe that they really existed, then visiting a zoo will blow your belief system wide open. Let the questions that come up as a result of your experiences guide you with trust that you will find what is natural and right for you.

For example, you may wonder how in the world seeing that demon was right for me. Well, that whole experience led me to one of the most powerful spiritual lessons I’ve ever learned: that what I experience on an inner, spiritual level is entirely within my own control, for succumbing to fear leads to fearful experiences, while setting a high intention and living with faith leads to wonderful experiences.

In summary, I recommend you pray over the whole situation and ask Spirit to show you what you’re to do with all of this. If it feels right to you, you might look for a local Spiritualist church, for there you will find a medium who can mentor you and also a development circle full of kindred spirits who can help you to make the most of your divine gifts. Remember that many, many people have walked this same path before you, that what you’re experiencing is entirely normal, and if you pray for help from Spirit, you will be guided every step of the way.

Coping with Sudden Psychic Awakening

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)
Dear Soul Arcanum:

Two years ago I basically died. I stopped breathing, and while I was medically dead, I was pulled into a vortex where I saw obelisks with weird glyphs on them. Some were black and some white, and they were in a sandstorm. I was in a place I felt I had been before, and I heard a soft female voice speaking to me. She didn’t speak English, yet I knew what she was saying. She read something to me, and then she said, You must return. You’re needed. I was then sucked back and painfully reinserted into my body. I was in a state of shock for a week, and then I began to become aware of more things than any human could be. I’m now clairvoyant to the point where I scare myself. I have really frightening recurring dreams, and when I touch physical objects, I see things. It’s weird! I have always had a touch of psychic ability, but this is way more than that, and I don’t know what to do with it all. I have a friend who is clairvoyant, and she said that I have a psychic aura that is growing. She also said that my light is darkness. What does that mean? Can you help me sort this out? – Stephanie

Dear Stephanie:

In the West, psychic matters have largely either been dismissed as utter nonsense or are considered so frightening that the subject is taboo. By contrast, in many other cultures, psychic experiences are an accepted part of everyday life.

I think a lot of our struggles with spiritual awakening are culturally driven. Since the U.S. is such a melting pot of various peoples, we don’t have traditions or teachings with which to make sense of our psychic experiences. Further, the breakdown of organized religion has left most of us without any sort of spiritual community to lean upon during times of spiritual crisis.

Most people don’t give much thought to spiritual matters until something happens that totally rocks their world, and then they have no one they can go to for help and advice. When they get on the internet in search of answers, many end up at my virtual doorstep.

As I hear this sort of thing all the time, I can reassure you that what you’re going through is quite common. For most people, awakening is a gentle, gradual process. When it happens suddenly, as it did with you, it tends to create a lot of fear and stress.

Near death experiences are a very common cause of sudden spiritual awakening. Since sudden awakenings strike people who have not been consciously preparing for them, those people often feel really overwhelmed. Instead of trying to shut down or close themselves off because they’re afraid, what they need to do is stop focusing on the symptoms (the psychic phenomena), and instead focus on the cause of their discomfort (their need for greater spiritual development.)

It’s sort of like you read a book about being a pilot and then you were put in a fighter jet and told to fly. Instead of worrying about all the ups and downs, you must focus on getting the skills you need to have a safe, smooth journey.

Some key elements of preparing for spiritual awakening include healing old wounds to the psyche; purifying your being; and cultivating faith, compassion, spiritual knowledge and wisdom.

To heal old psychic wounds, you must cultivate self-awareness via tools like journaling, meditation, therapy, deep reflection, etc. You have to face and make peace with your own inner shadows. A big part of this involves learning to forgive yourself and others for past mistakes. It also involves accepting the truth that everything happens for a good reason, for this empowers us to stop blaming things outside ourselves (including God) for our suffering. Only then can we make peace with the past and relax about the future.

Purifying your being involves clearing your body, heart, mind and spirit of blocks and lower energies. On a physical level, this may mean changing your diet and working with something like yoga. (I highly recommend yoga, for its very purpose is to facilitate spiritual awakening.)

To purify your heart and mind, you’ll have to let go of anything of a lower nature and consciously cultivate higher energies. For example, if you harbor resentment against someone, you’ll have to learn to forgive them. If you lust after fame and fortune, you’ll need to cultivate awareness of what’s truly of lasting value to your soul and teach yourself to focus on those things first and foremost.

Setting a clear, high intention will give you tremendous psychic protection. If you don’t have any conscious intention at all, you’ll encounter all sorts of crazy situations. It’s like wandering aimlessly around town – you could end up in some beautiful museum, but you could also end up in a ghetto.

Further, as you learn how to lift yourself out of fearful self-interest to act with love and compassion, you’ll gain control over the quality of your spiritual experiences. For example, through awareness that fear draws frightening entities while love and compassion summon angels and other beings of a higher spiritual nature, you can manifest the quality of experience you desire. It’s essential that you own your power to create your own reality. You’re doing this anyway, so you might as well seize the reins and create wonderful, positive spiritual experiences instead of negative or frightening ones.

You must also learn to trust that whatever comes up for you is designed to teach you something. When you encounter shadows in your outer experience, they always reflect shadows in your own nature, or else they couldn’t enter your experience. Any darkness that comes up is reaching for your attention, and when you shine the light of your awareness on it, it will naturally disappear.

I feel this is what your friend meant when she said that your light is darkness. You have divine light within you that is waiting for you to let it shine. Right now there is much darkness in your aura because you’re afraid, and because you have yet to become aware of all that is happening within you. As you become more aware, you’ll turn that light on.

You’re also being called to learn to love all aspects of your being, and to trust your own inner guidance by pursuing all that you feel drawn to explore and letting go of all that you are guided to release from your life. The more you trust and act on your intuition, the faster you’ll find new balance.

I recommend you read up on psychic matters and undertake focused spiritual studies and training, for the more you learn, the more comfortable you will feel. This will help you leave fear behind and manifest a higher level of experience. Ask your inner being to guide you to the spiritual practices and information that are right for you.

Finally, I believe that everyone who is psychically active should develop a strong relationship with their spirit guides/ angels. These spiritual beings want to help, teach and guide us, especially as we evolve in spiritual consciousness. As they exist at a high vibration, you must shift into a high vibration to consciously connect with them. (I’ve written extensively on how to raise your vibration in other articles.)

Once you create a stronger spiritual foundation, it will be natural for you to have wonderful spiritual experiences, and easy for you to access Spirit’s help and guidance whenever you need it.

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I was trying to learn to read my own aura by looking at myself in a mirror when a very strange thing started to happen. I looked into the mirror at my forehead and looked past that point. I saw very little by the way of an aura, but I did see something weird: I began to see faces superimposed over my own. The first couple of faces were kind of scary looking, and then they began to change rapidly. I saw a wide variety of faces, including some that looked like they weren’t fully human, like homo erectus or something. Can you tell me what was happening?
– Justin

Dear Justin:

This is such a common experience given what you were doing that many people gaze into a mirror in order to initiate this very phenomenon. Great instructions on how to try this can be found at near-death.com.

The most common term for what you’re seeing is “transfiguration,” which of course means a marked change in one’s appearance. Transfiguration is also a type of physical mediumship in which spirits use the etheric energy of the medium to project their image over the medium’s own face.

It’s quite possible you were seeing either the faces of spirits who are attached to your aura, or the faces of spirits who want to communicate with someone in the physical dimension who can perceive them. This happened because you were in an altered state of consciousness and able to see into the fourth dimension. When you became able to perceive subtle energies (such as your aura or the energy of spirits), earthbound entities rushed forward in hopes of being seen and heard.

There is another possibility, however. My own experiences have led me to understand that we can also perceive our own past selves and the past selves of other people in a similar way. This is because those other selves don’t exist in another place and time but rather in a parallel dimension. We are living all sorts of lives simultaneously, and by becoming aware of other dimensions, we may interact with ourselves in other forms. If we aren’t aware of this possibility, we may assume that these faces must be the spirits of so-called dead people.

The first time I experienced transfiguration many years ago, I had never heard of anything like this before. I was sitting with my friend Charlie, with whom I had a very powerful spiritual connection. At the time this event occurred, it was late at night, and we were both exhausted from arguing about our relationship, which we believed to be ending. We were sitting on the floor at his apartment, and were across the room from each other with our backs against facing walls. The room was very dim.

After we’d run out of things to say, we just sat staring at each other for a while. Then as I gazed at him, his face began to change. I saw a series of faces, one after another. Some were male, some were female, and some looked inhuman. One of the last faces I saw resembled a Spanish conquistador with dark hair and a long pointy beard. Just then Charlie broke our trance by gasping in alarm.

When we shared what had just happened, we learned that we had experienced the exact same thing: we had both seen a succession of different faces superimposed on the other’s. At the end, he had also seen me as a man with a pointy beard, but because of his Catholic upbringing, he had interpreted this to be the devil, which had scared him. We were dumbfounded and wondered if what we’d seen was how we’d looked in other lives we’d shared. As you might imagine, this experience made us instantly forget about arguing!

I’m also reminded of a story I read years ago in which a woman described how she was warned of danger by her own future self. She was in a hotel room with some very bad men who wouldn’t allow her to leave, and when she went into the bathroom and looked in the mirror, she saw her face change to one that was different yet familiar. The woman in the mirror told her she had to get out of there, and she even told her what to say to the men in order to do it. She did as directed and escaped. About twenty years later, she was looking in the mirror when suddenly these two events came together: she suddenly found herself remembering that event and felt the pressing need to warn her younger self of danger. She then realized that the face that had warned in her the mirror was her own face aged some twenty years – that’s why it had seemed different yet familiar.

When we ponder the idea that time isn’t linear, all sorts of explanations become possible for this sort of phenomenon. Thus the faces we see may be the spirits of departed loved ones, earthbound entities who are drawn to us because we’re of similar vibration, or even our own “spirits” from other lives.

We can learn a great deal about ourselves and others based on the faces we see, for they reflect our own unconscious natures. If, for example, you see a lot of angry faces, it suggests repressed or unresolved anger issues because when someone is full of angry energy, they attract entities of a similar nature. When we become conscious of some repressed or buried issue, we begin to process it and release it or clear it out. As we then change, we naturally attract more positive energies. So by reflecting on what we see, we can become conscious of repressed issues and work through them.

As for why some of these faces may seem inhuman, it’s because they are from dimensions where such beings exist. I even believe that people can live parallel lives that aren’t human because I have had very vivid “dream” experiences of my life as a dolphin. Perhaps you have a parallel life as a “homo erectus,” as you put it. Of course, it’s also possible these images are not part of “us” but rather beings that exist in another dimension.

While it’s absolutely mind boggling, maybe sometimes what we are seeing with transfiguration is past lives when we’ve shared an identity with someone else. Think about it: at the highest level, we are all of one soul, and since everything and everyone exist simultaneously, some of the people we are close to in this lifetime are part of ourselves in other lives.

It’s a bit like cellular division: We begin as one soul that divides over and over again into new incarnations. Since time isn’t linear, we continue to exist both as our individual selves now and as the selves we were before splitting off into our current personalities. If two people tune in to a higher dimension together, they may thus access lives in which they were aspects of the same person.

This means it’s possible that what Charlie and I saw that night was identical because we were seeing other lives that belonged to both of us prior to us splitting into separate entities in this lifetime. This idea resonates with me because if there was a purpose to what happened that night, it certainly felt like we were being guided to quit arguing by recognizing that our perceived differences were nothing compared to our deep spiritual kinship.

Are Some People Incapable of Having Paranormal Experiences?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I have always been interested in the paranormal, but in my own life I have never encountered anything abnormal. (I’m now 66 years old.) Am I just dense or not sensitive enough? Sometimes I even doubt the existence of an afterlife. As Omar Khayyum once wrote, “Strange is it not, that of all those that before us have gone, not one returns to tell us of what lies beyond?”
– Dr. A.

Dear Dr. A:

Your interest in the paranormal is a good starting point, but it’s not enough to evoke a paranormal experience. For that, you need sincere yearning of the heart and soul and the ability to suspend disbelief. Are you willing to potentially believe something false – at least temporarily – if it means you make a new discovery?

The most important issue to ponder here is how the law of attraction comes into play. I believe we are all creating our own realities based on the thoughts we think, the things we give our attention to, what we believe and what we expect to happen. This means that people who “believe in” the paranormal will tend to create experiences that match their beliefs and expectations. Further, their own unique spin on such beliefs will influence how they experience the paranormal.

For example, two people may believe in the paranormal, with one tending toward fear of it and the other toward wonder and fascination. The first would probably manifest frightening experiences with earthbound spirits and demons, while the second may only encounter fairies and angels.

Similarly, people who don’t believe in such matters or who never think about them would probably never have any experience with them. In fact, if they approached the paranormal with disbelief or the desire to disprove something, they would tend to manifest experiences that fulfilled their negative expectations.

I vividly remember reading about psychic experiments in which this was actually proven. In these experiments, psychic tests were administered to people who had filled out questionnaires about their views on such matters. Those who believed in psychic ability performed statistically much better than chance on the tests, while those who disbelieved in psychic matters did statistically much worse than chance on the tests – which means they were actually USING their psychic ability to perform poorly!

Regarding the quote you offered about no one returning from the afterlife to tell us what it’s like on the other side, first, we all know that is just not how life is designed. It’s a bit like asking why, if love exists, it never stands up and announces its presence in some tangible way. (If you say that you are also skeptical about the existence of love, then it’s no wonder you’ve never had a spiritual experience, my friend!)

Second, people DO return from the other side and tell us what it’s like – in fact, they do it all the time! If you study the stories of near death experiencers, you’ll discover a very convincing body of evidence, for regardless of cultural backgrounds, religious beliefs, etc., there are definite patterns in these accounts of what happens when we die. Many NDE’ers were skeptics or atheists who woke up on the other side and realized that there really is a whole world beyond what we can perceive in the physical.

Of course, I don’t blame you for not believing if you haven’t had any reason to – heck, I was the same way. It’s a classic catch-22: until we have an amazing encounter with the supernatural, most of us remain closed to paranormal experiences.

Often the experience that first opens people up to such matters is a sign or visit from a departed loved one. This was the case with me: so many inexplicable things happened surrounding the death of my first love that I suddenly realized there was far more to life (and death) than I had ever considered. Even after that, however, it was not until I was pregnant with my first child that I awakened psychically. (Not much of paranormal interest happened in between).

As it would be foolish to summon an NDE or the death of a loved one in order to invite amazing experiences into our lives, spiritual practice/development is our best bet. You mentioned sensitivity, and you’re right: people who are highly sensitive tend to have lots of spiritual experiences because they are able to perceive more than the average person can. Some people seem to be born sensitive, but sensitivity can be cultivated. Getting internally quiet is one way to listen for subtle stimuli, which is why meditation is so central to spiritual development.

To begin to perceive more, we can also look at everything in a fresh way. Instead of focusing on objects, we might begin to focus on the so-called empty space around objects. Instead of listening to what someone is saying, we can begin to listen for what they are NOT saying. Instead of constantly chattering to ourselves in our own minds, we can begin to listen for our inner being (or another being) to speak to us within.

There is also a lot to be said for adopting an offbeat, creative approach to life. Not long ago, I met two very psychic friends for breakfast, and was struck by the fact that all three of us were eating with our left hands – we’re all left-handed! It’s no accident that many psychics and mystics are left-handed, for spiritual experience arises from the right brain. By thinking like a creative, offbeat leftie, you too may begin to see the world in a new way.

Besides, when we’re too scientific in our approach to the paranormal, it’s like trying to capture a rainbow in a jar. The “magic” in spiritual experiences arises from being in the right place at the right time and feeling intuitively inspired to pay attention at just the right moment. (Further, doubting the existence of the afterlife is like assuming that rainbows don’t exist because our jar is empty.)

A sense of open, childlike wonder can also be invaluable. All sorts of psychic experiments have proven that children are far better at learning psychic skills than adults, most likely because they don’t doubt they can succeed. If we can find the courage to live in a “fantasy world” where every idea that comes to us is as possible as any other, we stand a much better chance of manifesting extraordinary experiences.

Of course, going back to the law of attraction, the more we look for Spirit, the more we’ll find it. Like anyone else, I sometimes get caught up in mundane concerns, and during those times, I generally stop seeing auras and encountering spirits. Spiritual experiences come and go depending on my own focus and vibration.

Finally, try living on the edge: explore new places, new ideas, and new people. Set some big goals and take some risks. Living like this engages our survival instincts, which are intuitively-based.

Also, please note that I’m not trying to convince you or anyone else of anything, for I believe that people adopt whatever truth is best for them at that point in their lives. I just try to help folks following in my psychic footsteps to make sense of the strange things they are experiencing so they know they are neither crazy nor alone.

can tell you this: I have had so many mind-blowing experiences that I have absolutely no doubt that we continue on after death, and that there is a whole lot of magic beyond what we can see of the Universe. Like you, I once wondered and questioned, but now I know. I truly believe if you pray for amazing spiritual experiences with a sincere heart and begin to watch for signs, you too will be guided to profound new faith and understanding.

What Causes Astral Projection Sensations?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I’ve had experiences related to astral projection for many years. The first one I remember happened when I was in high school. I was sleeping in bed when all of a sudden, I felt like I couldn’t move. I was sleeping but wide awake at the same time. I tried everything I could to move, but nothing worked. Then I felt this INTENSE buzzing. It felt like I had electricity flowing through my body. I could feel it around me, and I could also hear it! Since then I’ve had similar experiences, but not as intense. In fact, it happened just last week, and it still freaks me out. According to what I’ve been reading, these are the initial stages of an out of body experience. If I just let the paralysis and the buzzing take their course, will I be able to leave my physical body? What is causing these sensations, anyway?
– Malia

Dear Malia:

You are indeed describing the classic initial signs of an out of body experience. To purposefully project, you must relax and remain conscious when these sensations come over you. There are lots of exercises available in books and on the web to help you get out of your body as well. They may tell you to mentally “roll over” out of your body, feel yourself getting lighter, try to mentally “sway” back and forth, etc. So you don’t have to passively wait to be released; you can mentally manipulate yourself free.

In terms of authors, some of my favorites are Bob Peterson, Robert Monroe, and Robert Bruce. (Yes, they’re all named Robert. How weird is that?) There is also a great website I discovered a while ago called Astral Voyage. In addition to working with astral projection exercises, I highly recommend that you devote yourself to general spiritual development and meditate regularly.

Some of the most common signs of impending astral projection include physical paralysis, tingling or vibrating sensations, buzzing or roaring sounds and sexual arousal. As projection becomes imminent, one may also feel one’s limbs or entire being beginning to grow very light or “lift” up. Let’s explore some of these sensations and what is happening when they occur.

Generally speaking, the sensations that precede projection stem from your consciousness shifting into a different part of your being. This is probably unlike anything you’ve ever felt before because it doesn’t happen very often. (While we all leave our bodies every night, our CONSCIOUSNESS generally does not. Our subconscious minds are in charge when we’re dreaming.)

Most people will experience some of these sensations at some point in their lives, whether they try to deliberately astral project or not. When the physical body is extremely stressed or taxed due to sleep deprivation, extreme hunger, or physical accident/injury, many people have conscious spontaneous out of body experiences, or at least some of the symptoms. Drugs/anesthesia can also induce out of body experiences or symptoms, as can intense spiritual practices like deep meditation.

So what causes these experiences? Picture a cup sitting on a saucer, and imagine that the cup is your spirit and the saucer is your conscious awareness. Now imagine that the saucer is attached to a table (the physical body) by Velcro. Normally when we leave our bodies at night (and never realize it), the cup is gently lifted from the saucer. When we consciously astral project, however, we take the saucer with us, and to do that, we have to “pry” it from that Velcro. What you’re feeling is the sensation of your consciousness being separated from your physical body.

Please note that this is an extremely simple metaphor. In fact, some leading astral projection researchers believe that we can actually split our conscious awareness between our physical body and our astral body. For the sake of understanding here, however, all we need to know is that a part of our awareness that does not usually “go with us” when we leave the physical is separating during conscious projection.

Paralysis:

Sleep paralysis is the state where your body is “asleep” but your mind is “awake.” This is a very unusual state to be in, for usually when our bodies are asleep, our minds are too. When we practice meditation or projection exercises, we stretch our ability to remain conscious until it overlaps with the state of deep relaxation our bodies enter during sleep. We are “sleep paralyzed” every night, we just don’t usually know it. (Otherwise, it is speculated that we would physically act out our dreams.)

Though sleep paralysis can be terrifying, it is entirely natural. (What’s not natural is our conscious awareness of it.) Further, it is possible for projection to occur without physical paralysis. Sometimes we just feel deeply relaxed. The first time I began to spontaneously project, I was meditating in a seated pose when I felt my body slipping back and up. It was like I had two sets of hands, and one set was slipping out of the other set like they were gloves.

Sounds and Vibrations

If you don’t drag yourself out of sleep paralysis, next you may feel an intense buzzing or tingling sensation. Some people call these sensations “vibrations.” What I felt prior to leaving my body I would describe as waves of ecstatic energy that rolled from my pelvis up my body and over my head. Then a new wave would come. Each wave left me feeling a bit “higher” or lighter, and then the next thing I knew, I was out of my body.

Many people experience a bit of a jolt when they pop out, but for me, it was just a gentle lift. It is apparently very common to hear loud rushing, roaring, or buzzing sounds during this “vibration” period, though I didn’t hear a thing.

I should point out that my experiences seem to be much milder than the norm, perhaps because I had been on a conscious spiritual path for many years when I first projected. Because the non-physical exists at a higher vibration than the physical, the higher our consciousness is, the easier it is for it to transition into the non-physical. Someone who pursues spiritual and psychic development first, and then tries to project, would thus find it a gentler and easier process than someone who was new to spiritual matters and decided to explore astral projection out of curiosity.

Also, the more we project, the easier it gets. No doubt this is in part because we are learning what works for us via experience, but it may also stem from our diminishing fear, the natural spiritual/ psychic development that arises via meditation and astral projection exercises, and perhaps a weakening of whatever holds our consciousness in the physical body to begin with. (To employ that Velcro analogy again, think about how Velcro on a pair of pants will grow softer and easier to pull apart with repeated use.)

Sexual Arousal

Along with those waves of energy, I experienced another common sensation just prior to astral projection: some may call it sexual arousal, though I think a better term would be “energetic ecstasy.” It’s similar to the feeling of an orgasm as it builds, but it is suffused throughout your entire being: your body, your aura, your heart, your mind: everything you consider “you” and then some. This ecstatic energy courses through you in waves and builds until you lift out of the body.

The French call orgasm a “little death.” I think this is apt, because at the moment of climax, we seem to expand and merge with All That Is. Perhaps the sexual arousal that often precedes astral projection is the feeling of merging with a part of ourselves that is far more expansive and free than the physical.

May you explore fascinating spiritual territory throughout your life!

Can We Psychically Dialogue with Living People?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I have a question about ESP. Sometimes when I’m meditating, I have conversations with people who are living whom I haven’t seen or heard from in years. For instance, I’ve had several conversations with a man I always considered my first spiritual teacher, and I haven’t heard from him in nine years.

When I let my mind go quiet and meditate, soon I find myself talking with this man or another long-lost friend. When the conversation ends, we either “hug” and say goodbye or I fall asleep. When I come out of my meditation or wake up, I have a vague memory of the conservation and feel at peace, but can’t recall what was said. Are these exchanges really happening? Thank you for your time.
– L.

Dear L.:

The common term for what you’re experiencing is telepathy. Telepathy is communication between one entity and another without the use of any physical means. Though most people don’t know it, we are constantly communicating with other beings in telepathic ways. Some are people and animals that are physically incarnate, like us, and some are beings that are not currently in physical form, like spirits.

Many researchers believe that humans used to communicate telepathically far more in the past, when physical survival was much more challenging. Further, as inventions like the telephone and internet have made communication around the globe quick and easy, it’s possible that technology is causing us to exercise both our physical AND psychic senses less. Many researchers believe that animals communicate telepathically all the time, so it’s natural to assume that primitive humans would have been able to do the same.

Telepathy is very much like spirit communication, for there is a level of consciousness/reality where there is no difference between those who are incarnate in the physical and those who are not, and it’s from this level that telepathy arises. When we cross over into the afterlife, our subconscious minds take the helm, and this also what happens when we dream at night.

Further, at the level of the subconscious, we are all connected and in constant communication with other people both living and dead. We naturally tend to communicate most with the people we’re closest to, like our spouses, parents and children.

For example, my son and I have the strongest psychic bond I’ve ever known. He began communicating with me telepathically when he was in the womb by showing me images of what he would look like years in the future. When he was a toddler, we often awoke at night at the same time, and when I went in to check on him, he said things that made it clear that he had either been having the exact same dream I had awakened from, or he was aware of what I’d been dreaming. He’s now a teenager, and we often answer each other’s questions before the questions are even verbalized. Sometimes, we don’t even realize we’re doing it.

We can maintain a strong psychic link with people we knew in the past but don’t see anymore, and when we do, we continue to have a profound relationship with them on a subconscious level. To determine who you have a strong psychic bond to, ask yourself who you dream about most often. These people will also frequently pop into your mind for no apparent reason.

I frequently dream about my departed grandmother, with whom I was very close, and though I have virtually no relationship with him and haven’t for years, I also dream about my older brother all the time. By contrast, there are other people I interact with in important ways daily that I never dream about. There are also people from my past that I haven’t seen for decades who frequently come to mind. These are people I have an ongoing relationship with, but not on a conscious, physical level. In the astral, they are still a big part of my world.

A meditative state of mind is powerful because it helps us to synthesize our conscious and subconscious awareness. When we learn how to quiet the mind while awake, we can become aware of experiences that normally remain subconscious, like telepathy. Since everyone receives “messages from Spirit” and communicates telepathically with others at an unconscious level, a psychic is not someone who learns how to do this, but rather someone who learns how to do this consciously and purposefully. The more you meditate and work with this, the more of these conversations you should be able to remember.

On the rare occasion that both people are highly conscious, interesting experiences tend to unfold. One of the powers of a true guru is the sort of telepathy you describe. For a classic book on this phenomenon, check outThe Boy Who Saw True, in which the author believed he was communicating with a spirit guide, only to learn that he was in fact psychically connecting with a spiritual teacher who was sleeping on the other side of the globe.

While meditating, gurus can “visit” and even “teach” their students, just like spirit guides come to us when we meditate for answers and insights. So it’s not surprising that you have had a number of conversations with your former spiritual teacher, who may even be conscious of these visits himself. As time is not linear, he could even experience what you did at a different time – or perhaps you are the one who is tuning in to significant subconscious exchanges when you meditate.

It’s rare for others to be this consciously aware, however, and the less conscious someone is, the more control their subconscious will wield over them. Gaining conscious “access” to someone’s subconscious mind is thus very powerful. This is why hypnotism and affirmations and such seem to work magic; the subconscious’ programming largely determines one’s thoughts, behavior, and personal reality.

A person’s subconscious mind is far more malleable than their conscious mind. So long as they would not perceive what we want to be harmful or immoral, they’ll be receptive to our suggestions at this level. (This is why you can hypnotize someone to perhaps cluck like a chicken, but not to kill someone). If we become conscious of telepathic exchanges via meditation, we can work with others at a subconscious level to create positive change.

I have had amazing results with simply meditating and then mentally talking with someone’s higher self. In these conversations, I simply send them love and blessings and hold a vision of what I’m hoping they will help me create. Usually, what I want is simple peace and harmony in our relationship. Invariably when I do this, that person will approach me soon after and be remarkably more friendly and cooperative than they were before.

As most people are not aware of why they feel the way they do and why they do the self-defeating and unreasonable things they do, I figure if they’re causing problems, they’re due for a little “positive influence!” Of course we can’t override another’s free will; using this technique is like talking to them when they’re in a great mood and feeling highly open and receptive to us. So the next time you find yourself in conflict with someone, use your telepathic powers and try talking things over with their subconscious/higher self. It works!

In summary, what you’re experiencing is a real and wonderful reflection of how neither time nor distance can diminish our spiritual connection to the most important people in our lives.

Kriyas: Spontaneous Vocalizations, Twitches, Energy Surges

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I have been looking for an explanation to some strange spiritual experiences. I took a Reiki class and have been working with what I learned. On the third day I started to experience strange sounds coming from me vocally. These continued to become more frequent, and started to happen during my morning prayers, yoga, and now when any spiritual thing happens to me, even when I’m just reading about chakras in a book. This happens spontaneously; I don’t know it’s going to happen. The energy is so powerful. Do you have an explanation? Thank you for your insights.
– Ellen

Dear Ellen:

As strange as it may sound, what you’re experiencing is a normal, classic symptom of spiritual awakening. In fact, there is a Hindu word for these experiences: they’re called “Kriyas.”

Kriyas are spontaneous, involuntary physical movements. They are frequently jerks and twitches, but can also be vocalizations like sudden laughter or weeping, or the blurting out of words or other sounds. These spontaneous eruptions are caused by a surge of kundalini (life force) energy, and they occur most often during meditation and other spiritual practices – so this perfectly fits the pattern of experience you describe.

When we begin to awaken spiritually, new kundalini energy is released from our root chakras and begins to travel throughout our beings. In order for this greater energy to flow through, our energetic channels have to expand to accommodate it. If we are carrying any blocks or impediments to this stronger flow, this is when they will become apparent.

Blocks can arise from old emotional traumas or psychological issues we’ve been carrying around in our auras. These can be issues from this life or another life. They are probably not things that we are normally conscious of, but they may come up for us in the form of thoughts, feelings or memories and be relived as they are released. While this may be disconcerting and even painful, it’s all part of a natural healing process.

Sometimes kundalini experiences happen because we simply haven’t yet developed the capacity for greater flow. Just like a runner who is training for a marathon has to push beyond her 10k capabilities, we have to stretch ourselves to develop new capacities, and this naturally feels challenging. This process is happening on all levels, not just the physical, which explains why some manifestations of kundalini seem so strange.

Here’s a common analogy: Picture a garden hose that is coiled up with a trickle of water flowing through it. Now crank the faucet to turn the water flow up. If there are any kinks or obstructions in the hose, the pressure will build, and then suddenly when that pressure is strong enough, the kink in the hose may pop out.

We say we are experiencing “kundalini rising” as the inner pressure is building or surging through our systems. This can cause tingling sensations, hyperactivity, insomnia, fatigue, rapid mood swings, psychic and mystical experiences, euphoria, a sense of panic, etc. (As I’ve written before, there are a lot of interesting similarities between this process and what modern medicine has labeled “bi-polar disorder.” There are also correspondences to “chronic fatigue syndrome” and “fibromyalgia.”)

When energy suddenly breaks free, we may experience any of the above, but also muscle twitches, rushes or surges of energy, spontaneous movement and vocalizations – the list is extensive. Some people even find their bodies involuntarily moving into yoga postures when they’ve never practiced yoga before. Others find themselves speaking in foreign languages, singing, dancing ancient sacred dances, chanting, etc.

I went through a number of manifestations like this years ago when I was experiencing a surge in spiritual growth. Even now, whenever I shift my vibration in order to do a psychic reading, my body will involuntarily twitch as I move from one state of consciousness to another. I often experience twitches like this when sending or receiving healing energy as well.

Kriyas can begin to happen on a physical level long before we even become conscious of our spiritual awakening process. As you might imagine, that usually really freaks people out! They may go to their doctor or a psychiatrist to try to determine what is “wrong” with them, and instead of getting comfort and new understanding of what is happening, be put through a battery of physical tests to no avail, or end up with a prescription for something to “calm their nerves.” Some are even labeled psychotic or schizophrenic. Instead of getting help and healing, they end up distrusting not only this healing process, but also their own mental competency which is a spiritual crisis indeed.

Your spontaneous vocalizations are your body releasing blocked energy. Sometimes these kriyas take the form of long drawn out notes, like the toning done in ritual work to raise energy, or like the classic “Om” of meditation. If you’ve ever heard chanting and toning like this, you know how powerful it can be. Sound has healing power; your body is healing itself intuitively with these vocalizations as it adjusts to a new spiritual vibration.

While this may be easier said than done, the best way to cope with kriyas is to trust and surrender to them. The more you resist them in fear, the more uncomfortable and painful they tend to become. When people learn to trust them, they often shift from alarming and painful to blissful, ecstatic experiences. Try to view this as a powerful, positive healing process.

Of course, if you’re spontaneously breaking into an ancient song and dance routine at work, or yelling out during your child’s school play, it may be really hard to relax and surrender! Resistance will only make things worse; instead of trying to make kriyas stop, you can gain some control over them by accepting and honoring them. The best way to do that is to devote some time every day to this energetic balancing process.

It sounds like you have already adopted a number of spiritual practices like meditation and healing work. Ask your inner being what you most need each day, and allow your intuition to guide you to the process that is best for you at that time. (You might also explore yoga, which can greatly facilitate better energy flow.) Then when you’re in your chosen spiritual practice, just allow whatever comes up to come up. If you experience kriyas, try to relax and surrender from the detached perspective of your inner observer. The more you do this, the more kriyas will occur during those times instead of at less opportune moments.

Now that you know that what you’re experiencing is normal and ultimately healing, hopefully you can relax and trust this process. This will raise your vibration and make everything easier, and lead you from these alarming eruptions to some wonderful awakening experiences.
