Summoning Angels to Help Spirits Cross Over

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I have been working with Angels to perform spirit clearances. I have done this three or four times so far with their help, and I am comforted by their presence. My automatic writing suggests that in some instances, I can simply talk the spirits over as I naturally know where the gates of light are. What are your thoughts? Should I always call the Angels to assist or is there another way? Since I’m new to this topic, I would greatly appreciate your thoughts.

E.

Dear E.:

First, I encourage everyone interested in spirit rescue work to watch out for assumptions. For example, just because we are able to perceive a spirit doesn’t mean that spirit is earthbound. Every living person is unique and in a unique situation, and the same is true of spirits. It is never wise to push our help upon others whether they are living here or in another dimension. I mention this because I’ve met people who get so excited about finding “ghosts” and helping them cross over that they assume every disembodied presence is in dire need of assistance. There are both human and non-human beings living happily in other dimensions, so just because we can perceive a metaphysical being doesn’t mean it is lost or in need of guidance. A beginner’s mind is perhaps the most important thing we can carry with us into such situations, for this will keep us asking questions instead of leaping to conclusions, which will enable us to feel our way to the best approach.

Many readers are no doubt wondering why angels and other spiritual helpers can’t handle such matters on their own. Apparently, the problem is that spirits lingering close to the earth plane can no more perceive these higher beings than most living people can. Their consciousness remains as it was when they were living, so earthbound spirits continue to perceive the living but are oblivious to spiritual beings. The goal is to help these spirits shift into a higher state of vibration and consciousness. To answer your question, I think calling upon angels for help is a very wise thing to do; it certainly can’t hurt, and in many cases will prove powerful and helpful for all involved.

There are all sorts of reasons a spirit may not cross over into the afterlife when leaving this world, so the first thing to do is try to determine what the hang-up may be. Since you are able to talk to these spirits, this should be relatively easy for you. Being capable of two-way communication is helpful both in terms of figuring out what to do and knowing if your efforts have been successful. It’s a bit like trying to help a foreign immigrant get settled in a new land; it helps if both parties are able to hear and understand each other.

Some souls get stuck close to earth simply because they don’t realize they are dead. This tends to happen when people die suddenly and without warning. I imagine this state is much like what we experience when we dream at night; most of us “wake up” in a dream without any thought about the fact that our dream body is not the same body that is lying in our bed, sleeping. Here, helping a lost spirit is like approaching them in a dream and saying, “I realize you probably don’t know this, but you are actually dreaming right now and it’s time to wake up! Go that way to get to where you’re supposed to be.” If we bring angels in, the living helper can simply say, “If you look behind you, you will find an angel who is here to help you.” Once the spirit turns and sees the angel, the angel can take it from there.

Of course, not all spirit rescues are this easy or straightforward. If the spirit is mired in anger, fear, grief or other heavy emotions, its vibration will be too low to perceive the higher beings there to help. Here the job of the living is to help the spirit gain a higher perspective on their situation so that their vibration will rise to where they can let go of the past and open up to whatever comes next.

In this category we have the growing number of spirits who have no idea what to expect when they die. (Of course, this is preferable to when many people died in fear that they were going straight to an eternal punishment in hell.) When people expect there to be “nothing” when they die, that is what they tend to experience. This can lead to a period of limbo and confusion. I imagine this is like waking up in a hospital bed, feeling woozy and out of it, not knowing where you are, how you got there, or what you’re supposed to do next. Many spirits who find themselves in this position will wait for someone to come along whom they can ask for guidance. Since they can perceive the living but not higher beings, but most of the living can’t perceive them, this can prove to be a long wait. They may ask the living for help and become more confused when the living don’t seem to be able to perceive them. Some of these spirits may know or begin to suspect they have died but still not know what to do or where to go. If they had little religious experience when alive, the idea of “praying” for help may not even occur to them.

These spirits tend to linger in familiar places or near familiar people, and become excited when they encounter someone who can perceive them. Here the best thing is to explain to them that there is an afterlife, that there is nothing to fear, and that they have only to start to look for a light or tunnel and go through it to escape from the limbo they’re in. You can also suggest that they pray for help from whatever higher power they are most open to, or that they call to mind a loved one who preceded them in death and look around for that individual. If they are mired in strong negative emotions, you may have to counsel them just as you would the living. By helping them find more positive thoughts and feelings, they will become more able to perceive higher beings, let go of the past, and move on.

Some earthbound spirits have unfinished business and are looking for someone who can help them complete it. Many are simply waiting to get an important message through to the living. Others refuse to leave a particular loved one, preferring to wait until that person dies so they can cross over with them. You may be able to convince some that they can move on and come back when it’s time for the one they’re waiting for to pass, but some will refuse to go. We have to respect the free will of these spirits like we do the free will of living people.

Many earthbound spirits are stuck due to physical addictions. Just as this is one of the hardest things to “treat” in the living, it’s one of the hardest things to work through with a spirit. Since each individual has to find the strength to overcome addictions on their own, usually the best you can do is help a living individual free themselves from such a spirit, knowing all the while that the spirit will probably just find someone else to try to feed its addiction through.

Finally, there are those spirits who are so dark and “evil” that they are blind to the light and too heavy in vibration to rise to higher realms. These dark souls have no more interest in going “into the light” than they had in doing good deeds when they were alive. We can pray for and protect ourselves from these spirits, but like the worst criminals amongst the living, most of them don’t share our desire for love, peace and harmony.

Why Do We Dream of Acquaintances in Spirit?

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I had a friend who was dear to me, but I moved out of state and didn’t see him often or even talk to him much. Strangely, every time I would go to visit, I would always run into him somewhere. A couple of years later, I found out that he had died in an accident. What was strange was I had thought about him for the first time in a while two days before I was told of his death. I then had a dream about him several weeks later. I saw him walking and smiling and I ran to him and said, “I thought you were dead!” He said no and just smiled. I have now had several dreams of him. In one he confirmed that he was in fact dead. In another he came to me and said to remember him. I have dreams every now and again of him, and I’m wondering why. My three-year-old son came to me one day and said “Mama, D.C is here.” (That was his name.) I had never talked about him to my son and am wondering what is going on with all of this.

M.

Dear M.:

When loved ones cross over, they tend to visit people with whom they have a strong loving bond like the two of you have. The amount of time you spent together doesn’t matter; the important thing is the quality of your connection. This psychic bond brought you together when you visited his city when he was alive, and it’s continuing to bring you together now that he’s in another dimension.

Spirits also reach out to people who are receptive and able to perceive them. They may also try to come through to other surviving loved ones, but if those people can’t perceive them, they’ll focus on someone who can. People who are open and sensitive to spirit contact glow with a certain light in the astral; they’re like beacons that attract spirits looking for contact with this world.

My first spirit dream is a great example. This was many years ago, when I was in my early twenties. A friend from high school named Jennifer had tragically died in a car accident just after graduation. Jennifer and I had known each other since kindergarten, and while we ran in the same circles, we weren’t especially close. After she died, her mother told me that it had meant a great deal to her that I had offered to loan her a dress for prom.

Jennifer had been a really good cross country runner in high school. At the time I dreamed about her, I had been running for less than a year and had developed an injury that had me really frustrated. The night I had the dream, I remember lying in bed, thinking about the injury and wondering if I would have to give up running forever. This had me really down, so I sent out a vague prayer to the Universe for help with this problem.

That night I had a striking dream. In the dream, I was walking down a crowded sidewalk when I twisted my ankle and fell off the curb. I was sitting in the gutter, holding my ankle and worrying about never being able to run again, when the crowd parted and through it came Jennifer. She looked absolutely radiant and was wearing an angelic white dress. She looked more grown up and beautiful than I’d ever seen her look before. She walked directly up to me, looked me in the eye, and said, “Don’t worry; you’ll run again.”

When I awoke, I was perplexed and amazed by this dream. Of all the people in Spirit to come to me in a dream, why her? I now believe she came to bring me comfort because she wanted to return the favor I’d done her years before, and also because her own passion for running made her empathetic to my plight. (For the record, I did run again, and have been running ever since.)

A couple of years after that, I dreamed that I met her in this vague, misty place. I was startled to see her there, and said, “Hey, aren’t you Jennifer?” She indicated that she was. I said, “But aren’t you…dead?” She indicated that she was dead in this world, but that didn’t mean she no longer existed. Soon after that the dream ended.

Let’s turn now to your dreams about your friend. I believe that whenever we dream about someone who has died, and in the dream we are aware that they are dead, we are visiting with their spirits on another plane. I’ve now had many such dreams, and they always have a special quality about them; they’re especially moving, vivid, real and memorable.

Sometimes I dream that I see my departed father in a crowded public place. In these dreams, I know he’s dead and I’m very excited to see him. I am hugging him and talking to him while the other people in the dream can’t see or perceive him at all. I’ll say, “He’s right here in front of you!” but they still can’t perceive him. Sometimes they look at me like I’m crazy because I seem to be talking to empty space, but I don’t care: I’m too excited to see him to worry about what other people think.

It sounds like you and D.C. had a very loving connection. Further, you are obviously open to spirit contact and sensitive enough to both perceive spirits while in an altered stae of consciousness and remember those events after the fact. I’m sure that with some development, you could learn to do the same thing from an altered but awake state of consciousness.

The fact that your friend popped into your head two days before you learned of his death further validates your psychic sensitivity. I’m assuming that he was already dead at that point and was trying to get your attention. Since he couldn’t fully dialogue with you when you were awake, he began to try to reach you via the dream state. This is when it is easiest for us to visit with loved ones in other dimensions.

Regarding why our friends in Spirit come to us this way, there are lots of possibilities.

First, this sort of thing just happens naturally. Just as you would run into him when visiting his city, you run into him while you’re both in the dream world. Imagine that the cords between us and those we love are like rubber bands. Wherever we go, whether in this world or other worlds, the tension of being apart will draw us toward each other. This is how we find each other via destiny when we reincarnate together, and how we are naturally draw together again when we leave this world. The same thing is happening all the time whether we’re on the same plane or not. When we dream and visit the astral/other planes, the walls between us are removed, and this force can pull us toward the people we love on that plane.

Spirits also visit us to deliver love, comfort and messages like my friend Jennifer did. If they resonate with what we are going through, they may feel called to try to help. This is the same motivation for visits from spirits when we are grieving for them.

Finally, spirits sometimes visit us because they need something from us. Since your son perceived your friend, he’s clearly visiting you both when you’re awake and asleep, but you haven’t yet developed the ability to perceive him when you’re awake. Most of us are born with psychic skills that we lose over time as we’re taught what is “real” and “imaginary” and as we shift from the high vibration of the spirit world to focus on physical reality. When spirits do want our help, it’s often because they need an intermediary who can perceive them to relay some message to another loved one in this world.

I don’t feel that this is the case here because your interactions with him have been so casual and he hasn’t mentioned anything like this. Instead, I feel that your love for each other simply draws you into orbit of each other, and when you’re in a certain state of mind, you are able to interact and later consciously remember that interaction.

On Conquering Evil

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I would describe myself as a talented psychic who is confident about helping common poltergeists cross over. However, I once encountered a very dark, powerful energy in an old New England graveyard. The entire place reeked of corrupt, negative energy. I believe there was a portal there as well as one or more strong entities. At the time, I was young and unprepared for such matters, so I ran away and never went back. Is it possible for humans to cleanse a location that is this bad? What big guns or tools can psychics use to conquer evil?

A.

Dear A.

My views on this subject may surprise a lot of people. I believe we are wise to respect all life forms in the Universe, so I don’t see myself on the side of the good guys, battling evil. While good and evil DO battle, if we want to make the Universe a brighter place, fighting isn’t the answer.

Instead of conquering evil beings, my aim is to help people who want to heal find new well-being, guide people toward greater fulfillment, learn my own personal lessons and radiate love into the world. So if I had encountered what you did in that cemetery, I would probably have done the same thing you did by leaving that darkness for a lighter, happier place.

I view dark or evil entities much as most people view lions: they are dangerous when hungry and should be respected as such, but they have as much right to exist as any other creature. In some ways, they’re like deeply troubled teenagers: they may be lost and miserable but that doesn’t mean they want my help, share my values or are eager to become more like me.

Instead of endlessly trying to improve upon nature, I try to remain humble and trusting of it. We are all explorers in this vast spiritual wilderness. Some creatures are dangerous to humans, but we don’t have to destroy, banish or attempt to tame them, we just need to stay away from them.

In accordance with these views, I don’t think it’s our “job” to try to cross over every earthbound spirit we meet or convert every demon that crosses our paths. Even earthbound spirits have free will, which is why guides and angels let them do their own thing until they ask for help with moving on.

We’re also wise to trust our instincts and intuition, as you did when you fled that cemetery. Your question reminded me of the Grizzly Guy who loved bears so much it literally killed him. (I’m referring to the guy who befriended and made documentaries about bears and was attacked and killed by one.) We feel profound aversion to evil energies for a good reason. There are some endeavors that are foolish to pursue, and single-handedly cleansing the Universe of evil is probably at the top of that list.

While I’m not one to go looking for ghosts to bust, I do believe in helping the troubled people and spirits I meet when I feel called to do so. When I have felt called to try to clear a space of evil influences, it has always been because it was affecting people there who wanted my help, not because I felt the space itself should be different.

There are many people who actively engage dark forces out of a sense of personal mission. While I would never question another person’s calling, for me this is just another drama people like to get caught up in; instead of working on their own inner shadows, they seek shadows outside of themselves to wrestle with. Of course, life itself is one big drama we’re all caught up in. We are definitely wise to act on our passions and follow our hearts, so if some people feel called to wrestle with evil, I say more power to them!

As concerns protection from evil, you may be able to put fancy things like sage, incense, talismans, special rituals and the like to good use, but they are ultimately unnecessary because the only thing strong enough to ensure your success and well-being is an unwaveringly high vibration founded on a combination of perfect love and perfect faith.

Working with evil will certainly test the strength of one’s faith. This truth is often illustrated in great legends where many seekers fail by succumbing to fear/ego while the hero triumphs when his inner strength and faith shine brighter and more powerfully than anything dark forces can dish out.

I used to believe that there was great power in ancient religious belief systems based on the combined energy of its many devotees. While this may be true, I’ve heard from many people who called in a priest or minister from a local church only to have the minister flee, falter or fail in the face of evil. At the same time, I’ve heard many stories of one person transforming an evil situation with nothing more than the power of their own personal love, faith and wisdom. I thus believe that when it comes to good vs. evil, the outcome depends entirely on the inner qualities of the person or people trying to influence the situation.

To achieve perfect faith, you have to know that nothing can truly harm you because you are eternal. Our souls are like Etch-a-Sketches: every experience draws a unique picture across the screen. Some are beautiful and some are ugly, but none of them can damage us on a soul level. Once we shake an experience off, we’re ready for the next one. Further, every experience is to be embraced, for every experience blesses us with opportunities to learn and grow. When we are beyond any fear that evil can permanently harm us and we know that everything happens for a good reason, it’s easy to relax into a state of loving trust. When we love goodness more than we fear evil, we become powerful forces for good in the world.

Trying to conquer or destroy anything ultimately doesn’t work, so the wise focus on creating what they want instead of trying to destroy what they don’t want. It is thus far more effective to infuse a space with peace and love than to try to banish dark energies. Since what we experience is a reflection of our own inner landscape, if we encounter darkness and we want to be free of it, we have only to turn up our inner light, for this will naturally move us from troubling territory to a brighter psychic landscape.

The Universe is a mysterious, beautiful, wondrous and wild creation. There is so much here that is beyond our understanding that we are wise to trust in the way things are. To feel compelled to try to make things the way we think they should be everywhere we go is a bit like walking through the wilderness, trimming the hedges, pulling up weeds, mowing meadows, etc. Nothing is broken; it’s all perfect the way it is. Ironically, it’s when we can see and trust in this perfection that we become most empowered to influence it.

All of the above aside, we are all free to choose where we’d like to live via our vibration. Moment by moment, we are all always doing this through our thoughts, feelings, beliefs and expectations. There will always be mountain ranges, valleys and shorelines as well as swamps, deserts and ghettos. There will always be lions as well as lambs. If you focus on lions, whether you do so with love or a desire to rid the world of them, you will tend to attract more of them into your experience and give them more power through your attention. If instead, you seek to embody peace and well-being, you will naturally find yourself in beautiful places surrounded by lovely creatures, and the world will be a bit brighter because instead of worrying, struggling, and fighting the things that disturb you, you are radiating love, light and faith.

Are Schizophrenics Perceiving Other Worlds?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

My boyfriend’s sister is schizophrenic and has been in and out of hospitals for years now. I met her over the holidays and she struck me as highly intelligent. I was surprised by some of the things I learned about her experiences. Soul Arcanum, she sees demons as you’ve described seeing them! She says spirits are influencing her thoughts and other things that remind me of your writings. I keep thinking that she’s not crazy – she’s tuning in to something real in another dimension. Your thoughts?

Brigette

Dear Brigette:

This is a very complex subject, and I’m limited on space, but I’ll do my best. I’m not a medical doctor and nothing here should be considered medical advice. Further, instead of addressing everyone who has ever been diagnosed as schizophrenic, this article will focus simply on people who perceive things such as those you describe. I have traveled through my own so-called ‘psychotic break’ and out the other side, so this is a subject I have direct personal experience with as well as one that I have researched in depth. (By psychotic break, I refer to the period during which I first psychically awakened and began perceiving things others could not.)

I hear from people every day who are perceiving things that others can’t, none of whom are ‘crazy,’ so I think it’s really tragic that modern medicine labels all such experiences ‘psychotic.’ We’re so steeped in modern medicine’s views that it feels strange to flip them around and consider the idea that people who can perceive more than most may be somehow gifted. In other times and cultures, people who heard voices or experienced visions were revered as holy. I’m sure that many people who have been diagnosed schizophrenic are indeed tuning in to other dimensions and struggling to cope with it all in a world where their experiences are constantly invalidated and grossly misunderstood.

It is striking how closely the world of the schizophrenic can mirror that of someone in the midst of a psychic awakening. Of course, I’m not the first to discover such a connection: many great minds have noted these correlations, including doctors Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell.

Both the mystic and the schizophrenic tend to see and hear things that other people can’t; more importantly, they tend to see the same sorts of things, such as demons, discarnate spirits, and mythical creatures. Both may experience telepathy, encounters with departed loved ones, precognition, and a sense of unity with people and forces outside of themselves.

In other times and places, spiritual experiences like visions were actively sought and treasured, while today, modern science completely ignores and even denies spirituality. Despite this attitude, we are all fundamentally spiritual beings. It’s like we live in houses built over the ocean but are constantly told that the ocean doesn’t exist. If we hear it rumbling beneath us, smell the salt on the air or glimpse strange marine creatures swimming beneath the surface, we’re told we’re imagining things.

This schism alone can create great psychological tension. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing, for perhaps we’re meant to find the personal strength, courage and faith in ourselves to break away from identification with external ideas in order to validate our own judgment and determine our own spiritual truths. If that’s the case, this is an ideal situation in which to foster independent spiritual seekers. Deep thinkers who question things and those who stumble into personal spiritual experiences will naturally discover this deeper reality, and since they have no shamans, gurus or masters to guide them these days, they must find their own way to make sense of it all.

As Joseph Campbell noted in ‘Myths to Live By’, ‘The mystic, endowed with native talents…and following…the instructions of a master, enters the waters and finds he can swim; whereas the schizophrenic, unprepared, unguided, and ungifted, has fallen or has intentionally plunged and is drowning.’

This metaphor beautifully illustrates how both the mystic and the ‘mad man’ are wandering in the same territory but having vastly different experiences of it. Where the mystic has some sense of what is happening and longs for this journey more than even his own survival, the schizophrenic is unprepared and consumed by fear. Where one longs to transcend the ego/lower self, the other clings to the ego in terror of losing the only sense of identity he has ever consciously known.

While we don’t hear much about people who had psychotic breaks and recovered from them, I hear from them every day. These are people who perceived other realities, heard voices or saw strange entities who worked through their experiences and went on to lead healthy, happy lives. I’ve also read a number of accounts of people diagnosed as schizophrenic who healed themselves by finding Spirit in some way, and I’ve met many who had psychotic breaks but weren’t diagnosed schizophrenic who found their way to healing. Instead of drowning, they taught themselves how to swim in this strange ocean of experience.

By growing spiritually stronger, they were able to swim from terrifying territory toward calmer waters, where their visions changed from frightening to beautiful and helpful. Instead of seeing demons, they became more like mystics and began to see kind spirits, guides and angels. Many even consciously identify fear itself as the true cause of all their distress, and some sort of faith or personal relationship with the Divine as the remedy. Indeed, many gifted psychics began their extraordinary path in some form of ‘madness’ or psychological crisis, and found their way to a higher level of experience without turning their psychic senses completely off.

So what determines how we may fare when suddenly exposed to other realms? Whether we do it before, during, or after a spiritual break from ‘reality,’ we must all face our own inner shadows, fears and issues. If we devote ourselves to spiritual growth before diving into mystical waters, we’ll be prepared to work through whatever we encounter. If we somehow stumble into those waters before we’re spiritually strong and ready, we may flail and flounder, trying to gain our footing while projecting our fears and issues all around us.

As we gain conscious access to subtle energies and higher powers, we must also open our hearts to the power of love. In my research, I was struck by the tendency of schizophrenics to be totally absorbed in their own inner experiences and especially their fears. Similarly, I’ve noted that many set themselves free from madness when they began to look beyond their own concerns to the needs of others. The more they grew to care about other people, the more they were lifted out of all-consuming fears for their own well-being, much as the mystic transcends the ego to reach for the Divine. By shifting toward love, they raised their vibration, which naturally led them to a higher level of spiritual experience, empowerment and understanding.

I’m sure love and faith sound like naive remedies given the devastating nature of psychosis. However, if we study people with biologically healthy brains who experienced traumatic breaks from physical reality and went on to lead healthy lives, it does seem that spiritual growth and healing offer the most effective cures for psychological distress. While modern medicine can work wonders with the body, when it comes crises of the mind and soul, spiritual healing and support are essential.

The Green Man

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I’m confused about a strange dream (or OBE) I had. I had never seen apparitions before, but this one was quite clear. I saw a man with green skin who had leaves and vines for hair and all over his body. When I saw him, I was scared and tried to hide by lying down flat. He came toward me and before I shut my eyes tight, I saw his glowing green aura over my shoulder, then I felt him lie down on me. Is he a threat to me or did I misinterpret something? Is the Green Man good or evil?
Nicole

Dear Nicole:

Even people who aren’t familiar with the term the Green Man have probably seen images of him in sculptures and illustrations, which depict a male face emerging from dense foliage. Images of the Green Man can be found in many cultures around the world and traced back to before the dawn of Christianity.

Generally speaking, the Green Man is thought to symbolize rebirth as well as humankind’s connection to nature, as he appears to be something of a hybrid between plants and human beings. He may be a symbol of the interconnectivity of all things, even those that seem on the surface to be unrelated. In this way he may symbolize our spiritual path and how everything happens for a reason and leads us organically to whatever we most need to experience in order to learn and/or fulfill our dreams.

This notion of the Green Man representing the invisible connections between all things is interesting because as a nature spirit, he would exist somewhere between this world and the spirit world. Nature spirits are like hybrids between physical and spiritual beings, composed of substances just beyond the physical realm like plasma or ether.

Your experience sounds like an astral encounter to me, but since you mentioned the possibility that it was a dream, I’ll start there. To interpret this dream, we need to examine your personal associations with the idea of the Green Man before this experience. If you had never heard of him, it’s unlikely this was just a dream. If, however, you had read or heard about him before, then it’s possible that this figure was somehow symbolic. Of course, if you had heard about him before, it’s also possible that some other astral entity took on this form in order to evoke a certain response from you.

Other people have had dreams of the Green Man. In fact, many people dream of him who have never heard of him before, and only learn about his mythical status upon researching his image. I find it fascinating to explore the connections between ancient myths and alternate realities. When people from many different cultures and backgrounds see or believe in the same sort of being, it makes sense to consider that this may be something real in another dimension that may only interact with us when we’re in an altered state of consciousness and able to perceive beyond the normal spectrum of awareness.

Other dimensions are populated by a whole array of fascinating creatures, which is where our myths about elves, fairies, satyrs, unicorns, mermaids, dragons and the like come from. Most ancient cultures, such as those of Greece, Rome, China, Egypt and India, believed wholeheartedly in these mythical creatures. Even many of the world’s great philosophers, such as Plato, Socrates and Paracelsus, were aware of and perhaps guided by non-physical entities. (I’d argue that all great minds are somehow guided by intelligences from beyond this world, but most aren’t consciously aware of where their inspirations come from.)

To one whose consciousness is rooted in the physical, the very idea of nature spirits no doubt seems preposterous. However, there was a time when the idea that tiny invisible monsters were responsible for illness and infection seemed just as ludicrous. Once we developed the ability to see these creatures with our physical eyes, however, they became known as bacteria. So just because we can’t see something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

It is said that at certain times, nature spirits become more visible to the naked eye. Further, to one who seeks connection, who loves nature and is open and sensitive, nature spirits may be sensed intuitively and/or encountered in strange and wondrous ways, either spontaneously or by inducing altered states of consciousness. This is also true of those who actively befriend them, for then the spirits may try to reach through to the physical to interact with us. Further, by looking for them and loving them, we may achieve vibrational harmony with their sphere of existence, and thus open a window of perception into their world.

The most common facilitators of encounters with nature spirits include dreaming, out of body experiences, and drug trips. There are certain hallucinogenic plants that seem to lead to encounters with particular beings. Entheogens are plants that are used as sacred sacraments, and many people who use entheogens report meeting the spirit of the plant, which may be perceived to be a plant god or goddess similar to the Green Man.

During entheogen trips, the Green Man has been known to appear to help people get out of their heads and their bodies in order to explore other realms. In fact, in Sufi and Arab mysticism, hashish was smoked for the express purpose of finding and connecting with the Green Man/Khadir in hopes of accessing the divine mystery. The same sort of thing was practiced by shamans using hallucinogenic mushrooms and plants.

When we consider that all these people are meeting the same strange beings and having the same strange experiences, we’re wise to wonder what is going on, and if perhaps instead of them just imaginingthings, they are indeed opening windows to another objective reality. I like to think that perhaps to beings in other realms, we are like the mythical beings of folklore, and when we meet in the grey space between this world and their realm, they are just as curious about us as we are about them.

As for whether the Green Man is good or evil, I think it’s wise to resist the temptation of simple labels, for this is like asking if human beings are good or evil. Just like people, it’s believed that if you are on the good side of nature spirits, they will help and befriend you. If, however, you abuse their trust and good will, they can turn against you and make you sorry you ever met them.

According to those who have encountered him, the Green Man may feel wild but he doesn’t usually feel threatening. Indeed, many people report feeling strongly drawn to him. Often the Green Man appears to help people in some way or to warn them about something. If you love nature and the Earth, the Green Man may appear to help you. If you’ve become disconnected from nature, he may appear to call you back. Many people have had encounters in dreams, astral projection, and full on waking visions of the Green Man trying to help, reassure or comfort them in some way.

To sort out this experience for yourself, ponder your relationship to nature. Also, examine energies of renewal and rebirth in your life; any incidents that followed this experience that it may have been trying to warn you about; and perhaps most importantly, the interconnections between all your experiences and how they all contribute to and compose your spiritual path.

Tired Sensitive is Overwhelmed by Voices and Visions

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

When I go to bed at night and close my eyes, I see many people. For a long time I’d see a random stranger’s face while falling asleep. This went on for years, and then over the last year it has escalated. Now when I go to sleep, if it’s not faces, it’s voices. I hear people talking and having conversations. One night I heard two men having an in depth conversation about old cars. I don’t know these voices. I’ve moved out of town into a rural setting, and I live alone. Usually these conversations are boring and I feel like I’m wasting my energy with all of this. When this happens, I do something I learned in a meditation class: I ground myself and ask everyone to leave. This helps but it is getting harder and harder to do. Last night, I saw a man I’ve never seen before. He was looking at me and smiling at me. He was all in white, like a white robe with a white thing around his head. Why is this happening to me? How can I get it to stop? I’m not schizophrenic; I’m psychic but have never had time to develop my abilities. I work full-time and am exhausted. If you were to pick my letter to answer, it would be a blessing. Thank you.
Rose

Dear Rose:

You would be amazed at how many people have the same experiences as they’re falling asleep, for when we quiet our minds and go within, we close out the input of the physical realm and open up to awareness of All That Is. It may comfort you to know that all of this exists when you’re wide awake – your mind is just too focused on the physical to notice this subtle input. When people who are sensitive quiet their minds, they naturally begin to perceive all sorts of things that escape others’ awareness. Hearing voices is not unusual; it’s only when one can’t cope with hearing voices that mental health issues arise. Instead of passively watching and listening to all of this strange stuff, the key to greater peace of mind is for you to empower yourself to manifest the quality of experience you desire.

To rid yourself of this tiresome pattern, you’ll have to learn to focus your mind and gain greater control of your receiver, so to speak. You say you haven’t had time to develop your mental powers, and I believe you’re being pushed to put this higher on your list of priorities. (You’re uncomfortable now because you’ve been fighting this idea for a long time.) If you want things to improve, you can’t continue to put this off. Otherwise, you’re like a person who is physically out of shape who complains that she gets winded every time she climbs a flight of stairs but also makes no time for exercise. To gain more control over what happens in your mind, you’re going to have to make time for mental/ spiritual development.

There are endless theories about what it is you’re picking up on. Some say these visions and voices come from the spirits of people who have died, while others say they are people who exist in another dimension, space or time. Some believe them to be spirit guides and angels; devils and demons; fairies and elves or even aliens. Scientific types tend to view them as snippets from our own subconscious minds, while paranoid folks fear they are the work of government agencies or occultists bent on mind control. You may also be picking up on the private thoughts of other people in this or other dimensions, or remembering snippets from past lives – the possibilities are endless.

It’s important to discern if these voices seem to be talking to you and/or about you or if you are just overhearing them. It sounds like you’re mainly overhearing them, which suggests you are picking up on sounds from another place or dimension.

Imagine that your mind is like a radio. When we learn how to control the mind, we develop the power to focus on what we want to focus on, and via meditation, how to quiet the mind as well. To ease into this, you might begin by consciously focusing on something in particular as you fall asleep at night. If this is challenging, you can try a guided meditation or hypnotherapy recording. Some recordings will help you to fall into a deep, restful sleep, while others will simultaneously guide you in achieving some other desirable aim as you’re drifting off. Once you get the hang of this, you can skip the recording and run your own mental program.

For example, when I have trouble falling asleep, I often visualize what I want to manifest in my life. This is not the same thing as worrying about all I have to do the next day; I just imagine my life as I desire it to be. This has two great benefits. First, I’ve never found anything that puts me to sleep faster – the next thing I know, I’m waking up in the morning. Second, this is a very powerful time to work with the law of attraction. We’re in a relaxed, trancelike state, and since we’re doing this before we go to sleep, we’re programming our subconscious minds to help us manifest what we desire while we slumber. Then we may have an enlightening dream or wake up with a new idea and the fresh energy we need to make good progress the next day.

Another favorite of mine is to count my blessings: Instead of counting sheep, I begin to mentally list all the things I’m grateful for. This raises my vibration and helps me to focus my mental and creative energy on maintaining all the positives in my life.

Obviously, however, not all of what you’re perceiving is random. I feel the man in white who was smiling at you is a spirit guide. (Spirit guides tend to appear all in white like this, and of course they are naturally kind and friendly.) He may have shown up in answer to your prayers for help with these phenomena, which is perfect, since one of my main suggestions for gaining control of unwanted spirit communication is to develop a strong conscious relationship with your spirit guides. I don’t have room to go into working with your spirit guides here, but there is a lot of information about that available elsewhere.

In addition to working with your spirit guides, you can try to communicate with any other spirits who make contact with you in this way. One young woman heard voices like this for years: She’d hear snippets of conversations, music, noises, etc., none of which seemed to have anything to do with her. Then one night it occurred to her to ask (out loud) what the two people she could hear were talking about, and they actually answered her!

If these are spirits who intuit that you are sensitive and will be able to perceive them, it may greatly help you to speak to them and ask them if there is something you can do to help them. If they are troubling you late at night, then set aside time during the day for just this purpose. You might wake up 15 minutes early and tell any spirits that pop in that you’ll be happy to speak to them in the morning. I know this sounds nuts, but it has helped many budding mediums to get a good night’s sleep and take control of their experiences.

There is so much that you can do to transform this pattern. If nothing you try brings relief, you can always see a hypnotherapist. If there are conscious entities involved, they should make themselves known again when you’re in deep trance, and then the therapist can dialogue with them and work out a remedy. Whichever approach you choose, I feel if you set aside more time and energy for this during regular waking hours, you won’t be deluged with psychic input at the end of the day.

Three Kisses Goodbye

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

My brother-in-law in New Jersey died at home of a fatal heart attack on June 17. We have a strong bond: I am very dear to him and he has been very open about that with everyone in the family. He would always say that I am his favorite sister-in-law. A few days after he died, I believe I had an eerie encounter with him. (By the way, I am working in Qatar.) I was nearly asleep around 1:30 a.m. My eyes were closed when I felt something like a magnet pinning my body down, and an unexplainable feeling emanating from my body. Then I felt a kiss being planted on my head three times. I could even feel the breathing and my right hand was being caressed at the same time. I was so scared, I just kept my eyes shut and prayed the Lord’s Prayer, and then I felt my body being released. I strongly felt that it was my brother-in-law saying goodbye to me. I called up my sister (his wife) and my parents and really cried, as this had frightened me so much. Am I correct in my assumption that it was really him? I have been through a lot, and my sister told me that he was always very concerned about my well-being.
Evelyn

Dear Evelyn:

Your letter reminded that we can hear all sorts of stories about spiritual experiences, but we won’t begin to truly believe until we have our own personal encounter – and that’s how it should be. Once we DO have our own experience, however, it’s imperative that we trust in our own perceptions.

I believe that what you experienced was exactly what you think it was: a visit from your beloved brother-in-law at the time of his death. This sort of thing is surprisingly common. In fact, it’s estimated that between 20 – 40% of people in the U.S. have had personal spontaneous contact from a deceased loved one. For more information, check out the work of Bill and Judy Guggenheim or the After Death Communication Research Foundation.

That he visited at the time he was leaving this world makes sense, for often spirits will visit someone they loved in order to say good-bye or let them know that they have died. Physical distance is no obstacle: many people have been halfway around the world from the dying person who visited them.

Interestingly, I’ve had your question slated for publication for about a month now, yet just a few days ago a friend of mine experienced something similar. Her beloved uncle was dying from cancer but he was expected to live for another day or two. She was at home when suddenly books flew off the shelf, two bedroom doors slammed, and her kitchen light turned on and then off again. She began to talk out loud to her uncle, asking if that was him. That’s when her phone rang: it was family calling to tell her that her uncle had just passed.

There are many ways that spirits may appear after their deaths. I believe that these forms are determined by a combination of the proclivities of the spirit and the living person. For example, a spirit who was very physical in life may make his presence known through a touch, as your brother-in-law did. Someone who was very auditory may be heard to speak either out loud or telepathically, while someone who was very visual may be perceived as an apparition.

At the same time, those who perceive spirits will experience visitations in their own way. Of course, it is generally those who are psychically open and sensitive who have such experiences to begin with. Sometimes spirits target those who are sensitive right off the bat, while other times spirits try to come through to all their loved ones but quickly figure out that some people are able to perceive them while others are oblivious to their presence. They then naturally focus on the sensitive ones in hopes of getting a message through to the whole gang.

Some encounters are entirely visual; spirits may even try to communicate a message through sign language. Similarly, some visits are just auditory: a voice heard is out loud or in one’s head. Other experiences are kinesthetic in that one feels a presence or a touch. Many visits are combinations of the various psychic senses. For example, someone may feel a pat on the leg and hear the spirit’s voice in her head, while another may smell the spirit’s favorite cologne and sense their presence.

It doesn’t surprise me one bit that you saw your brother-in-law while you were falling asleep. Being in a trancelike state greatly facilitates spirit communication because we’re not focused on the physical dimension and our minds are awake but quiet and receptive. I believe this is why so many visitations involve spirits standing at the foot of the bed: It’s not that spirits want to scare us in the middle of the night, but rather that we are more able to perceive them when we’re sleepy.

Just as there are many ways spirits can communicate, there are many reasons they may do so as well. Spirits who visit around the time of their deaths may be trying to say good-bye, inform us of their passing, or in the case of murder victims, try to let someone know what happened so that justice can be served. Usually, spirits just want us to know that they are okay: that we needn’t worry about them; that they are happy where they are; that they feel no more pain or suffering; and that they want us to be happy and go on with our lives. Sometimes spirits have information to relay, such as where hidden money, important papers or other treasures can be found.

When spirits visit a number of years after they died, they may be trying to give us advice or warn us of danger. For example, grandparents have been known to warn parents that a baby is choking or that a child is in trouble. Spirits have warned people that the house was on fire, that they shouldn’t go on a certain trip, or that they should lock their doors and windows to protect themselves from a prowler.

Before closing, I must mention that I feel you and your brother-in-law have a deep karmic bond. I’m sure you two were close because you shared a lot of love in past lives. Since we incarnate with the same souls over and over again, it can be fascinating to study family dynamics. When two family members share an inexplicably close bond, it’s often because they grew close in other lifetimes. This would make your brother-in-law a key member of your soul family – perhaps much more important to you on a soul level than either of you consciously realized – so it’s understandable that he would come to say goodbye to you.

This visit was a great gift for you and the rest of the family above and beyond the love that was conveyed. It is personal experiences like this that break open people’s belief systems and launch them on conscious spiritual journeys. As there is nothing more important or rewarding than that, I urge you to give thanks for his visit, and encourage you to explore the big questions it has raised for you. Also, as you move forward on this new spiritual adventure, please trust your own perceptions and intuitions whether they jibe with what you’ve been taught is real and possible or not.

Haunted by Fatal Accident

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I was involved in a car accident eight years ago. The drunk man who hit me was 32 years old; he died at the scene. I am actively seeing a therapist and have been diagnosed with PTSD, but have always felt this man as a lingering presence in my life. I have been left with anxiety and remorse that I can’t shake even though the accident wasn’t my fault. I feel this lost spirit has attached himself to me and is draining me of my energy and truth. I have even tried to not believe in this to make it go away, but I can’t deny my truth anymore. I am an intuitive person and feel this to be the root of my problems. My date of birth is 4/22/79.
Kellie

Dear Kellie:

First and foremost, it is essential to your well-being and peace of mind to trust yourself. I know that the idea of spirit attachment is by no means mainstream, but that doesn’t mean it’s invalid. Further, whether one believes in spirit attachment or not, innumerable cases demonstrate that spirit releasement therapy can instantly resolve longstanding physical, emotional and mental problems. Usually, people have tried everything that modern medicine has to offer before they open up to the possibility of spirit attachment, so they are astounded when spirit releasement yields fast, dramatic results.

You describe a number of factors that support the idea that this man is indeed attached to you and influencing how you feel. Most important is your own feeling that this is what is going on. The best instrument for detecting this sort of phenomenon is one’s own intuition, and yours is very clearly trying to make you aware of the true nature of your problems. I urge you to listen to your own inner knowing and trust your ability to sense the truth.

In addition to your intuition, it’s helpful to realize that this sort of thing happens all the time. When a person dies a sudden, violent death, the odds of that person remaining earthbound on the other side rise dramatically. At first these spirits may not realize that they have died at all; one minute they are driving along, and the next, they’re walking through a very strange dreamworld. When someone who is inebriated dies a sudden violent death, the chances that they will end up disoriented on the other side are even greater.

When we add remorse to the mix, we even have a reason why a spirit who wasn’t necessarily disoriented may choose to hang around. Given your feelings of remorse and anxiety, odds are good that this spirit is aware of what happened and is so overcome with remorse that he is hanging around to try to find a way to make things up to you.

Knowing this should make it easier to forgive him if you haven’t yet, which will encourage him to move on. If you have forgiven him, then it’s important that he know and feel this. I doubt very much that he realizes that he’s harming you by endlessly trying to apologize or make things right. Once he knows he has been forgiven and that the best thing he can do for you is to let go, I imagine he’ll be amenable to moving on.

There is a book you may find interesting entitled A Change of Heart by Claire Slyvia. While the book is mainly about the attachment of a spirit via organ transplant, the author’s descriptions of how she became aware of the spirit’s presence and the ways this attachment made her feel like she wasn’t herself are similar to your own experiences.

For more on spirit releasement therapy, you might check out spiritrelease.org and spiritrelease.com. You may also be interested in this article, which links PTSD with spirit attachment: PTSD: An Alternate View.

For releasing the spirit, you have three basic options:

Personal/Ritualistic: You can try to release this spirit yourself. Since it seems this is a well-intentioned spirit, you shouldn’t encounter too much resistance from him. You might begin by simply communicating with him (out loud) that you are aware of his presence, and explain how he is negatively affecting you. Tell him that he died in the accident in case he doesn’t know, and communicate (with feeling) that you forgive him and want to move on. Communicate that it is best for him to move on as well – that both of you will benefit from this. Send him lots of love and understanding, and perhaps communicate that in losing his life in that accident, he more than paid for his poor judgment. Encourage him to forgive himself and look for the light or for angelic guides/helpers. Pray for help from the Spirit world and visualize him being guided in crossing over. There are also set rituals for this sort of thing that you may find in books or on the internet; trust your intuition to guide you to the best way for you.

Spiritual/Intuitive: You can visit a psychic/medium who is experienced with helping spirits cross over. I recommend finding a Spiritualist church and asking the minister there for advice. Many people who can perceive and communicate with spirits are able to talk them through the process of letting go and moving on. (This is what the main character on the TV show The Ghost Whisperer does.)

Secular/Interactive: In my opinion, this is the most reliable, powerful and thorough approach. You’ll want to find a hypnotherapist who has training and experience in spirit releasement therapy. The therapist will guide you into a deep trance state and dialogue with your subconscious mind/higher self regarding the true nature of your problems. If this spirit is attached to you, at this time it will be able to speak to the therapist through you, and the therapist can then guide the spirit in moving on. A good therapist will also help you begin to heal from all of this so that you can feel as good as new again.

After this spirit has been released, you may need further healing. It’s likely that this spirit attached to you at the scene of the accident, and your own healing from this traumatic experience may have been arrested or impeded by this attachment. Spiritual/energy healing can be very helpful here, as can prayer and meditation. Remember that your guides and angels are always standing by, ready to lend a hand. If you pray to them for the healing, answers and solutions you need, and you trust your intuition, you will be guided to whatever is right and best for you.

Crossing Over an Old Imaginary Friend

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:
I have a spirit friend who has followed me since I was a toddler. (My mother recalls me talking to her as an imaginary friend even before I do.) Though I don’t live in the house I grew up in, she now lives in my basement, and her name is Alyssa. Recently I decided to learn how to consciously communicate with her again, and now I can talk to her freely. She’s told me that she’s 11 years old and was killed by her abusive father. Her father’s ghost comes around sometimes too, though he’s not here as often as Alyssa. She tells me that he abused her throughout her life. I’ve seen him many times: he’s tall and muscular, looks dirty like a laborer, and is a smoker and an alcoholic. His eyes are filled with hate and sorrow. Sometimes I believe he’s mad at himself, but most of the time I feel he wants to hurt someone. Alyssa is very sweet and would never hurt me, but she hasn’t forgiven her father. Every time I go down into the basement, I feel she stands nearby to protect me from her father, who stares angrily at her while I’m there. When she is watching over me, he just glares at her but never moves an inch. Once she wasn’t there, however, and he crept toward me until I raced out of the basement. I want to help both of these ghosts cross over but I don’t know how. What should I do?
Laura

Dear Laura:

I must admit that this is not my specialty. While I have perceived earthbound spirits in the past, I am much more adept at communicating with spirits who have crossed over. I believe this is the result of a natural progression. When our psychic ability is first awakening, we tend to be pretty freaked out, and our fear aligns us with subtle energies of a lower nature.

Earthbound spirits have a heavier vibration than your average person. Even when they’re earthbound simply because they’re lost, they’re still deeply lonely and confused, so they’re not in a good space. Spirits who have crossed over have a higher vibration than your average person, so it takes someone who can get into a very high state of consciousness to communicate with them.

As we grow in faith and wisdom, our vibration naturally rises, so we tend to shift from psychically connecting with earthbound spirits to perceiving departed spirits in heaven, to ultimately channeling guides and angels. So where people are on this spectrum determines their psychic forte.

While I may not be the ideal person to help you at this time, I have been that person in the past, and I can tell you a few things about this situation that should help.

First, you are right to want to cross these ghosts over. As you can see, they are stuck beyond time and space; they’re interminably on hold. Given the appearance of the father, I’m betting he died shortly after killing his daughter. (Perhaps he committed suicide or got the death penalty for her murder.) In any case, neither of these beings were at peace in life, and thus they aren’t at peace in death.

As for your own needs, having earthbound spirits attached to you (even sweet little girl spirits) can have a negative affect on your mental, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being. To sustain themselves, earthbound spirits must draw upon our emotional energy, so even if Alyssa doesn’t mean you one bit of harm, she is a drain on you.

No doubt when you were a toddler, you were cute and seemed safe when Alyssa was looking for a happy family to join after she died. She had nowhere else to go, so she befriended you and hung out at your house. I’m sure it helped that you were able to perceive and play with her.

I bet her father is attached to her, and she is attached to you. He is clearly wrestling with his own demons, trying to overcome his lower nature. He may have resisted going into the Light when he died because he was afraid he would be punished for what he’d done, or he may have simply been trying to hold onto his daughter so he could continue to use her.

Many times murder victims will become earthbound because they want someone to know what happened to them and to see their murderers brought to justice. It’s my understanding that there is a window between a few days and about a week after death during which the Light is ever standing by, ready for us to cross over. If we linger too long before crossing over, that energy fades away, and we end up stuck between dimensions. This is why murder victims often become earthbound.

As for how you can help these two cross over, first you must convince them that this is in their best interests. You might assure Alyssa that once she has crossed into the Light, she’ll find other loved ones who have crossed before her. Further, since her father is clearly attached to her here, by crossing over she can set herself free from him.

As for him, you may have to talk to him about divine forgiveness and the need for him to forgive himself and seek redemption. If this doesn’t work, he may be willing to go simply because Alyssa is going. (You may have to get creative to convince him to move on.)

I would pray my heart out to generate lots of love and compassion for them both and bathe them with that energy. Send him as much love and compassion as you can muster, for though he may be angry and violent, he is clearly a tortured spirit. This will help him to reconnect with his own inner divinity, which will help him align with crossing over. It will also spiritually protect you, for as I always say, the best way to protect yourself from dark shadows is to simply turn up your inner light.

Having said that, it’s important that you don’t feel stressed about crossing them over. While it’s wise and kind to do what you can, they have free will. If they refuse to cross over, it would be best for you to set yourself free from this spirit attachment. That is a big additional subject that I don’t have room to go into here, and which I have covered extensively in other articles.

Once these two have agreed to cross over, you might simply pray for assistance from their guides and angels as well as your own. There are beings ever ready to assist us with this sort of thing, but first we must look for the Light. Getting stuck between dimensions is much like getting mired in any problem here in the physical. For example, an addict can be down and out and feel like there is nothing he can do to break free, but once he decides to change and asks for help, he discovers that there has always been help available to him. So pray with all your heart for guides and angels to come and escort these two over, and tell the spirits to look for these kind helpers.

If this doesn’t work, you could try to simply take them to the portal they need to cross through. An obvious choice would be a funeral, for there will be an open portal there, ready for the recently departed. Tell Alyssa to get her father and come with you. Once there, simply tell her to look for the Light and to take her father with her through it.

If all the above fails, you can always call someone who specializes in this sort of thing. Since you can consciously communicate with her, however, I’m confident you can affect this on your own. Heck, you may even have the makings of an earthbound spirit specialist yourself!
