Mental Voice Predicts Future Relationship

Dear Soul Arcanum:

A few years ago I took a seminar, and I raised my hand to ask a question of the teacher. Right after I asked my question, I heard a voice in my head. It was perfectly clear, and it told me that I had just met my future husband. I was so taken aback that I actually looked around the room to see if anyone else had heard or noticed anything, but everything seemed normal. I live in the same town as this man, and I haven’t seen him since, but this experience still pops in my head now and then, especially since I’m still single. Do you think it’s possible that this man is indeed my future husband? Either way, what in the world was this voice? Thank you so much!
– M.

Dear M.:

I know this sounds crazy, but if my own experiences hold your answer, I’d say this man IS your future husband!

One of the most powerful psychic experiences we can have is the recognition of someone we’ve known well in a prior incarnation. Even people who aren’t into psychic matters are open to the idea that there are some people we meet with whom we have a special sense of connection.

Scientists may attribute this to sensory clues such as the way that person looks, smells, or uses body language. However, there is a magical quality to some meetings that transcends biology; it’s a special feeling that arises when we meet someone we already have a very strong psychic bond to – someone we have had important experiences with in another life.

Whether that other person is a potential romantic connection or not, usually these feelings are strongly attractive. For example, we may experience “love at first site” with someone of the opposite sex, but we may also experience a sense of kinship upon first meeting someone who will become a good friend, mentor, teacher, boss, etc.

Such feelings aren’t always positive, however. Sometimes we may feel instantly repelled, scared, uneasy or cautious. This happens when we meet someone who has caused us pain or suffering in the past. In my experience, the attractive feeling is far more common, but that may differ by person. If someone has a hard time with relationships, they may have more painful experiences, and when they meet up with people again in the future, it would be natural for them to have more negative reactions.

I can only think of two times I had strong negative feelings about someone right off the bat, and despite my desire to stay far away from those individuals, I ended up having very trying experiences with them. I believe that premonitions like this are reflective of both the past AND the future: we recognize that person as familiar from the past, and we sense the karma that lies ahead.

In the case of negative reactions, the pain we experienced in another life is brought to the surface, and our soul recognizes that we’re about to face some big lesson or deal with some heavy karma. In the case of positive reactions, the love and happiness we experienced in another life is reawakened, and our soul recognizes that we’ve found someone we’ve been missing for a long time someone we perhaps didn’t even know existed.

I can’t think of a single important relationship in my life that didn’t “announce” itself with a weighty feeling the first time I met that person. Think through the key relationships in your own life: your best friends, favorite teachers, boyfriends, etc., and review what happened the first time you met them. If you don’t recall anything special, it may just be because the volume on your psychic abilities isn’t turned up far enough for you to hear anything but the “loudest” emanations. Meeting a soul mate/future husband would certainly bang a big psychic gong!

I believe that “true love” reunions carry the most intense psychic impact, because the strongest experiences I’ve had with that voice you describe occurred when I met my husbands. (It happened with both my first and my second/current husband).

At the time I met my first husband, I was in college and very independent and ambitious. As my mom had been married and divorced a number of times, I was not a big fan of marriage in general, and planned on never marrying myself. Then one night I went to visit a friend at his fraternity, and on my way in the door, I saw my ex for the first time as he was on his way out. A jolt went through me when I saw him, but at this point, my psychic abilities were dormant, so I didn’t know what this meant.

Later that night I attended a party at that fraternity, and he was there. There was a strange buzz in the air, though again, I wasn’t processing any of this consciously. It felt like I had been placed there and was going through motions I was supposed to go through – like this had all been planned in advance. While I felt attracted to him, it was far more intense than any attraction I’d ever felt before.

When I got back to my room that night, my roommate and some other girls who were hanging out asked how my night had gone, and without thinking, I blurted, “I just met the man I’m going to marry!” It was only as I said those words that I consciously realized that this was indeed what I’d been sensing. My roommate said, “I thought you were never going to get married,” and I replied, “So did I!”

Perhaps some readers are questioning the quality of this experience, since that marriage didn’t last until death did us part. I sincerely believe that we were meant to come together to bring our children into the world, but that we were not meant to stay together forever. I don’t have space to explain it all here, but a number of other spiritual experiences support this view.

As for my current husband, the first time I saw him, he was sitting with someone else in a restaurant, and the same thing happened: time seemed to stop and I was riveted. By this point, however, I had developed my psychic abilities, and I knew that he was going to prove to be a very important person in my life. “Coincidentally,” two weeks later I joined a new gym, and the first day I walked in, he was there. It wasn’t long before I knew we were destined to be together romantically. (He, however, didn’t wake up to this fact until a year later. Needless to say, that was a very long year for me!)

If one individual of a destined couple is highly psychic like you and the other is not, often the psychic person knows they are destined to be together, while the other one doesn’t realize it until the time is at hand. This can be really nerve wracking for the one who senses the truth, unless that person remembers that if something is indeed destined, it will happen. If it’s not destined, then there’s no point worrying about it. Knowing the future before it is due to happen can be really challenging unless we have the faith to relax and trust in a higher plan.

I believe the voice or feeling you describe is a psychic alarm that goes off when we meet really important people we’re destined to develop relationships with. I’ve heard many stories about first meetings with future spouses that are similar to those described here, and time and time again, despite all sorts of obstacles (like living on separate continents!), those prophetic feelings proved true.

If I were you, I’d ask Spirit for confirmational signs about this man. If you then you start hearing his name, bumping into him around town, or something similar, for heaven’s sake, smile and make eye contact! While destiny is powerful stuff, it never hurts to help things along. Perhaps instead of just predicting the future, that voice is trying to nudge you to step back into your lover’s arms.

Spirit Communication: What if the Spirit has Reincarnated?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I believe in reincarnation, and also that we can communicate with spirits. How soon do spirits decide to reincarnate? If they do choose to reincarnate, how can we communicate with them? Aren’t they in the physical plane again, and therefore out of the realm of such communication? Are souls required to reincarnate a certain number of times before they can retire to the spirit world permanently?
– Jean

Dear Jean:

No one living can answer these questions with certainty, for they are some of the deepest mysteries of life. I can only relay what I have come to understand via my own experiences with spirit communication and my own spiritual studies. Further, we must assume that our perspective is distorted from the start because of our conceptual dependency on the idea that time is linear, which appears to be true physically but NOT true metaphysically. How this may affect matters of reincarnation is downright mind boggling.

It’s my understanding that there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to reincarnation, for there are many variables that would affect such decisions. Some people spend a lot of time in other dimensions before reincarnating in the physical, and some people return to Earth quickly.

Dr. Ian Stevenson is a leading researcher into evidence for reincarnation, and he has suggested that the average span between incarnations is about 15 months. The nature of his work may skew his views, however, as he focuses on children who remember their last lifetime and can visit their former homes and families to demonstrate their knowledge of those people and places. Obviously, for this to happen, one would have to reincarnate very quickly, or those family members would have departed life as well. (People who did not reincarnate quickly like this would not find themselves subjects of his research.)

In some religions it is believed that reincarnation is immediate: as soon as a person dies, he or she is conceived or born into a new life. In other spiritual traditions and cultures, an interval of many years is considered the norm.

As for the factors influencing such decisions, they appear to depend on the circumstances of one’s death: sometimes release from the physical is a blissful relief, sometimes it seems to come too soon, and there are lots of possibilities in between.

When a person had a trying life or suffered physically before death and was spiritually evolved enough to go to a pleasant spot in the afterlife, death is no doubt a relief. We might imagine it’s a bit like leaving behind a very busy work schedule and the discomfort of a frigid winter to take a lovely, relaxing vacation in Hawaii. Most people will not want to return to that cold climate again, and given the choice, they’ll put it off. Some people, however, will quickly get bored with the perfect weather and not having much to do, and will long for another adventure: a new life in a new place with a new body.

If a person had a lot of wonderful things happening at the time of their death, or if they left important unfinished spiritual business that is “haunting” them in the afterlife, death may seem to come too soon. In this case, it might be a bit like being suddenly called away on business; we might have a strong sense of responsibility pulling us to go back home and take care of things, or we may have dreams and desires we’ve left unfinished that we long to fulfill, and this could cause us to decide to reincarnate quickly.

If you think about it, there are no doubt lots of factors that would come into play. If a soul mate decided to reincarnate, you may be tempted to follow. If you’re longing for the opportunity to reincarnate with a young grandchild, you may decide to wait until that child crosses over and you can incarnate together. If you’re devoted to watching over a loved one from Spirit for the rest of their life, you may wait on moving on to a new life yourself.

As for how we could communicate with spirits of people who have reincarnated, first, we can’t communicate with ALL spirits whenever we desire – not by a long shot. It’s thus possible that when a spirit is “unavailable,” it’s because they’ve returned to the physical.

However, it’s my understanding that this is a far more complicated subject. For example, many years ago I read for a man who lived in Germany. During the reading, I had (what I thought was) a spirit named Klaus come through for him. I saw him clearly and described him as looking very much like a certain film star. I described how he dressed, that he chain-smoked cigarettes, and the rather unusual, loping way he had of walking. I also brought through advice from him about my client’s situation.

It blew both my mind and the mind of my client when he reported that he definitely could identify Klaus, but that Klaus was a living, breathing coworker of his! I could tell no difference between this “spirit” and the other spirits I frequently connected with who had crossed over.

For more information on this phenomenon, I recommend a book called The Boy Who Saw True, which is the diary of a Victorian boy who was gifted with second sight. In it, he describes how he communicated with a “spirit guide” for years, only to learn as he grew older that his spirit guide was embodied on Earth. Here’s how the guide explained himself to the boy:

“You must pardon me for having disappeared so suddenly the other day, but I was called back to my body. As I gave you no reason to think otherwise, I expect you imagine I’m a dismembered spirit? But that’s not exactly the case. To be explicit, I happen to be a so-called Anglo-Indian, and I am communicating with you while out of my body, which is asleep thousands of miles away from here.”

This notion certainly opens up all sorts of possibilities!

As for what we must do to end the cycle of rebirth, in New Age parlance, we might say that we must evolve beyond the Earth’s range of vibration. That doesn’t mean we’re all done, mind you; it’s more like we’ve moved up in grades in school. If Earth life is first grade, each day that we attend first grade might be one lifetime, and when we finish that grade, we’ll move on to a new classroom. Some people take accelerated courses in which they are more challenged but may progress faster. Some find school in general easier than others. Some people even flunk out; believe it or not, if we fail to learn, eventually we can be reabsorbed by our Source.

Eastern religions teach us that we must free ourselves of karma to end the cycle of rebirth. For our purposes here, we might say that karma is that which makes us return: return to life on Earth, to certain people/relationships, or to certain experiences. If we have promises or desires to fulfill or issues to resolve, these loose ends tug at us to go back and tie them up. Through spiritual growth, right action, and transcendence of desire/attachment, we free ourselves from having to reincarnate.

For a Christian perspective, the key to spiritual freedom can naturally be found in the Bible:

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew, 6:19-21

This means when we stop seeking things we can’t take with us when we go, such as money and material possessions, physical pleasures, fame and other ego-based goals, and instead focus on those things we CAN take with us, such as knowledge, spiritual wisdom, inner peace and love, then we’ll have risen above the lessons of the physical plane, and will be free to move on to subtler dimensions of experience.

Can All Spirits Contact Us from the Afterlife?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

My dad died three weeks ago. He never believed in life after death, but I do. I often joked that I would prove him right one day – have I? How soon after death can spirits contact us, and is it easier for some than for others?
– B.

Dear B.:

In the words of Henry Ford, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” We each live in our own personal universe. In my reality and your reality, spirit communication is not only possible, it happens all the time. In the reality of someone who actively disbelieves in such things, it usually just doesn’t happen.

I would love to tell you that everyone who crosses over is instantly enlightened and sees the errors in all their limiting beliefs, but it’s my understanding that this is not the case. Death in and of itself doesn’t change our basic natures. While crossing over is certainly a “life changing” experience, some people are more changed by it than others. People who were staunch skeptics about spiritual matters while they were alive may remain disbelievers after death. It’s my understanding that some of them actually think that the life they’ve just left behind was nothing more than a dream or a hallucination – they don’t believe in what we call LIFE! They “wake up” on the other side saying, “Wow, what a dream I had!”

Now those are extreme cases, and no one remains like that forever. Just as our spiritual understanding is ever evolving here, it is also ever evolving in the afterlife. There are a lot of factors that may affect our ability to connect with certain loved ones in Spirit, not only from our end of things, but also from theirs. Certainly the belief that this is possible is a big one.

While there is no real “danger” in not believing in life after death, there is great POWER in believing. In order to gain the power to do something, we must believe it is possible.

We know that some people here on Earth are gifted at spirit communication while others have no interest in it, don’t believe it’s possible, or can’t seem to make it happen no matter how hard they try. Well, the same is true of spirits. Someone who thought spirit communication was a bunch of hogwash when alive may not instantly change his mind upon crossing over. While that does happen, it generally happens to open-minded folks who may have had opinions about such matters but were open to changing them in light of new evidence.

Further, just like people tend to only see and hear that which confirms their already set beliefs, the same is true of spirits. If we cross over with very strong expectations about what will happen, we will tend to have experiences that validate those beliefs. So if we firmly believe that Jesus will greet us, that is who we’ll meet. If, on the other hand, we believe we’ll float on a cloud to a heaven full of angels playing harps, that is probably what we will initially experience.

You can pretty much judge how well someone will settle into the afterlife by asking yourself how well they’d adapt to being plucked from their home and set down in a foreign culture. People who are open and adaptable will tend to adjust very quickly, while others may decide that instead of adapting to their new environment, they will adapt their environment to them.

As whatever we think about or desire in the astral instantly arises, if we’re attached to certain circumstances, we can simply fantasize them into being. This is the root of the widespread belief that we will have all our desires fulfilled when we get to “heaven,” for when we’re in the astral, we have only to think of something to have it take shape in our experience. What we call imagination is real in this dimension. All of this means that if we have a strong desire before we cross over to remain in contact with our loved ones here on Earth, and we believe that is possible, then we will find a way to make that happen.

As we retain our basic personalities, knowledge, passions and interests when we cross over, the best way to ensure we’ll have certain spiritual abilities on the other side is to develop them while we’re living. We can thus assume that the most gifted communicators in Spirit are generally those who were adept at this while alive on Earth.

There have been some amazing communications from spiritual researchers after they crossed over. Many of the pioneers of EVP (electronic voice phenomena), for example, have continued their work from the other side. Konstantine Raudive may be the best known researcher working just as hard on spirit communication from the other side as he did while he was living here on Earth.

If you have a relative who was an active disbeliever in spirit communication and the afterlife, they may not be easy to contact on the other side. That doesn’t mean it never happens, mind you – some people are delighted and amazed by all they learn about the afterlife when they cross over. Further, the power of love has been known to conquer all.

Please note that not being able to connect with someone in Spirit does not mean that they are lost or confused on the other side. As I’ve explained in a number of other columns, there are many factors that influence our ability to connect with certain spirits, both on our end and theirs. We have to have faith that if and when the time is right, this will happen.

I certainly don’t want you to worry about your father, for he would be no worse off “disbelieving” where he is now than he was when he was alive. I just want to be honest about my understanding of the power of belief, so that those of us who will cross over in the future know the value and wisdom of studying spiritual matters and developing strong faith.

If you have a loved one in Spirit that you are worried may be a bit lost, you can pray for them and reach out to them with your heart, for they may actually feel closer to you and the earth than they do to anyone in the afterlife. Tell them that they have died and should go toward the light or ask for spiritual help.

For example, to connect with your dad, work with the power of love and emotion. Just sit quietly with your eyes closed and vividly remember a happy time when you two were together. Go very deep into this memory. Recall all the sights and sounds and details of this experience. Sink into the feeling of being in his presence. The more clearly you can summon a memory of how it felt to be with him, the more you will draw him near.

You may feel like you are imagining his presence, but you have to suspend disbelief and just go with whatever comes to you, even if you feel like you’re “making it up” at first. Remember, what you imagine is real in the astral.

If you do locate your dad and he seems to be lost or not know he has died, you might want to call upon another loved one in Spirit who had faith in the afterlife and try to bring these two together. Tell him you’re going to summon someone who can help him.

If the particular spirit you’ve called upon doesn’t come, don’t worry – someone else will. Whoever is best suited for your dad will show up. Once you’ve mentally gotten them together, this helping spirit will take it from there.

While odds are good that our loved ones transition just fine into the afterlife, it can’t hurt to check in on them, and doing this will usually lead to the spirit communication we desire anyway.

If you try this and can’t seem to get the results you desire, remember that we all visit the astral in our dreams, so those spirits who may not be so good at reaching through to this dimension can almost always connect with us while we are dreaming and in their world.

Copper Pyramids and Spirit Communication

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

Your response to Elaine’s question about contacting spirits was lovely. I have done that, but it didn’t happen until years after my sister’s death. She and other teachers wanted to contact me even more than I wanted to contact her, for they had things to teach me. They instructed me to build a copper pyramid and to sit in it. They gave the same message to my sister within the same timeframe. What I heard from these spirit beings changed dramatically after I sat in this pyramid. What is it about the pyramid and the energy change it created that did this? I went from hearing loving, comforting spiritual messages to receiving profound information about who and what I am in relation to God/Existence. What did the pyramid do that allowed me to hear teachings unknown to me and very likely to many others? My sign is Aquarius; I was born 2-1-61.
– Rebecca

Dear Rebecca:

There is a lot of mystery surrounding Egypt’s pyramids, and a strong association between the pyramid shape and mysticism in general. Before I address your experience with this copper pyramid, I want to explore a little bit of the esoteric history of pyramids.

While many pyramids in Egypt were perhaps primarily royal tombs, the Great Pyramid seems to have been designed for a deeper purpose. We don’t know who built it, for it appears to be physically impossible for the ancient Egyptians to have constructed it given the technology available at the time. Further, it is perfectly aligned with the stars; its sacred geometry is so sophisticated that scholars doubt ancient Egyptians could ever have made the astronomical calculations required to plan it, much less construct it in perfect accordance with those specifications.

Some say that the technologically gifted people of ancient Atlantis are responsible, while others suggest that only aliens from a civilization far more advanced than our own could have pulled its construction off. The original purpose behind the Great Pyramid is also unknown. It is generally agreed that it is far more than an enormous tomb, and was perhaps never designed or used as such anyway; it appears to have been built for a far more scientific or esoteric purpose. Given the messages deciphered in hieroglyphics, many believe that pyramids were enormous tools designed to enable prophecy and other spiritual aims.

Regardless of the purpose for the Great Pyramid (which we will probably never determine for sure), pyramids in general have proven to be great tools for meditation and channeling life force energy, for the shape of the pyramid naturally focuses energy flow on whatever is directly beneath its apex.

Indeed, countless scientific experiments have shown that placing an object inside a pyramid can produce remarkable effects. (Please note that these “pyramids” are not solid, but are the structural outline of a pyramid without walls.)

For example, plants that are grown inside a pyramid thrive and generally grow at a highly accelerated rate. Pyramids can also slow the deterioration of biological matter; food placed under a pyramid will stay fresh two to three times longer than normal. The molecular structure of biological matter like food and water will also be inexplicably altered, and placing drinking water under a pyramid can improve its taste and other properties. Pyramids may also dehydrate (or mummify) items, but without decaying them.

Some people actually sleep under a pyramid because they believe it encourages restful sleep and wonderful spiritual dreams. Experiments have also shown that being inside a pyramid can ease pain, boost our energy, and accelerate physical healing. Kirlian photos of people’s auras show that sitting inside a pyramid tends to make one’s aura grow much larger and brighter. People who sit or meditate under pyramids report that their thinking grows crystal clear and their meditations are much deeper than normal.

In experiment after experiment, meditators reported the same effects of sitting under a pyramid. Many felt strangely weightless, experienced a distortion in their sense of time, and felt electrical tingles on their skin. Those who were hooked up to EEG machines were shown to have more alpha and theta brain waves, and those signals were twice their normal amplitude. Those who sit under pyramids also frequently report spiritual visions, out of body experiences and profound meditations.

Sitting under a pyramid also tends to make people feel wonderfully balanced. If they feel lethargic before sitting, they feel energized after; if they feel anxious or upset before sitting, they feel calm after.

This brings us to why copper may have been recommended as your pyramid building material: copper is first of all a very good conductor of energy. It also is known to balance the body’s polarity. (This is why people wear copper bracelets for various physical problems.) As copper encourages harmony and amplifies energy, it is wonderful for balancing the flow of give and take, which we might label energetic COMMUNICATION.

Meditating under a copper pyramid could facilitate spirit communication by helping us achieve a very deep state of harmony and relaxation while at the same time raising our vibration. It would make us enhanced receivers and transmitters of the energy of telepathic messages.

You may also be interested to know that many believe that pyramids were like temples wherein one might be initiated into secret esoteric knowledge and practices. When we view your own pyramid experiences in this light, we might say that you were “initiated” into a new level of spirit communication.

While the effects of pyramids can be shown in experiment after experiment, much of their power is shrouded in mystery, or at least is beyond my own current understanding of physics. So while I can offer you lots of support for the validity of what you experienced, I can’t explain how or why your own experiment with a copper pyramid produced the effects it did.

I do know, however, that your decision to act on the message you received from Spirit would be very powerful in and of itself. As Jesus taught, “Knock and the door will be opened, seek and you shall find.” You listened to Spirit and you honored what you received by acting on it, and in this way, you really knocked on that proverbial door. Even if sitting under the copper pyramid didn’t do a thing but make you look really strange, I believe your faith and trust alone could have lifted you into this new level of spiritual experience.

Copper Pyramids and Spirit Communication

Even if sitting under the copper pyramid didn’t do a thing but make you look really strange, I believe your faith and trust alone could have lifted you into this new level of spiritual experience.

How Can We Communicate with Loved Ones in Spirit?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

On Christmas Eve in 2003, my daughter (who was 25 years old) and my grandchildren (who were three and six years old) were murdered. I have been to Spiritualist churches and had my girls talk to me, so I know they have continued on in the afterlife. What I want to know is how I can do this myself. I talk to them all day and most of the night. I say my prayers and ask God to help me, but I never feel my girls around me. Please, do you think you could tell me what to do? Love to you!
– Elaine

Dear Elaine:

My heart goes out to you; I can’t imagine how it felt to lose your loved ones in this way. I do understand your disappointment with your attempts at spirit communication, however. Like you, my desire for spirit contact was born when someone I loved dearly passed. In my case, it was my first love who died at a young age, and I wanted nothing more than to connect with him again. It was thus very upsetting to me when I started to interact with other spirits, but not with him.

While I believe that with the right approach, spirit communication is possible for everyone, please keep in mind that even established mediums can’t always connect with particular spirits.

So why would the spirits we most desire to connect with elude us? There are a couple of reasons this often happens. First, in order to link with spirits, we must have a very high vibration, which means we must be in a state of great joy and peace. If someone we love more than life itself crosses over, it may be very hard to achieve that vibration when thinking of them. Grief is about as low in vibration as one can get, so to link with the people we love the most, we may have to spend a lot of time healing after their deaths before we’re able to think of them with love and joy. This is why a medium may be able to bring them through when we cannot.

Another thing that often happens with those we’ve loved dearly is that they are so close we don’t distinguish their energy as separate from our own. If they were a big “part of us” when they were alive, then this becomes even more true after they cross over. If a spouse is trying to communicate with us from beyond, it may seem like nothing more than our own thoughts coming through. If a stranger or an acquaintance reaches out from the other side, however, it may feel more like “someone else” is there.

This is similar to our ability to sense people’s presence when they’re living. Imagine you’re in the kitchen and your daughter is in the living room. In the back of your mind you know she is there even if you haven’t seen her there with your physical eyes. You may not be consciously thinking about where she is, but at an unconscious level, you can sense her presence. Now picture that a stranger is in your house, and you suddenly sense a change in the atmosphere. Even when a stranger is benevolent, our instincts will alert us when someone we don’t know is nearby.

By way of another example, unless you printed this out, your computer is on right now, and it’s making its normal electrical hum. Until I drew your attention to it, however, you were not conscious of this noise. It is there so often that you have learned to tune it out. If your computer started making a clinking noise – something you’re not used to – it would get your attention immediately.

This is the difference between the presence of the spirit of a loved one we were close to and other spirits. The loved ones may be there all the time, but because they are so familiar to us, we don’t take conscious note of it. We have to learn to listen with “new ears” to hear subtle sounds running in the background.

To complicate matters further, the non-physical is not accessed “out there somewhere,” but rather from within. When we look for spirits in our outer physical world or expect to hear or perceive them with our physical senses, we may be disappointed. It’s important for people who have never had conscious communication with spirits before to understand that this is a very subtle, internal experience. Have you ever been doing something and felt someone looking at you, then glanced up to find out your were right? This is how subtle this feeling is.

You described how you talk to your daughter and grandchildren all day. It sounds like you are very verbal/auditory, so you are probably trying to get answers clairaudiently. To me this is the hardest form of spirit communication because language is already a step removed from the heart of a message. It’s not universal the way that images and feelings are.

It’s my understanding that this is also the hardest way for spirits to communicate with us. The non-physical is a place of energy and mental telepathy, not spoken or written language. When we receive messages from spirits, we are the ones who usually translate the thought energy of the message into words; not the spirits. To get names and verbal answers is thus relatively very difficult.

It’s easiest for spirits to communicate in the language of emotion, which is pure energy. This is why we may feel a wash of love when a spirit is reaching out to us – there are no words for that sort of feeling. So if you’re just getting started with spirit communication, you might want to begin with basic instincts like those gut feelings that someone is there. Often people who are grieving do have these feelings tip them off to the presence of a loved one in Spirit, but they dismiss them as wishful thinking. The more you work with and trust those feelings, the more this form of awareness will grow.

If you’re having trouble even sensing a presence like this, try doing something that puts you in a very high vibration (a feeling of peace and joy) first, and then open up and “feel” for your loved ones. This may be something you simply love, or if you can, you might journal about the best times with your daughter and grandchildren, and get yourself into a state of profound happiness and appreciation for the wonderful memories you have. Then when your heart is swelling with love and joy, stop and close your eyes and ask to feel their presence.

If it is too hard for you to think about them and remain joyful, you might have to begin by asking for them to meet you in your dreams. Many people only have contact with loved ones in their dreams because that is the only time their vibration is high enough and their minds are open enough for this sort of thing to happen. If you begin to work with your dreams (and there are lots of books and articles on this subject) and you set a conscious intention every night of meeting up with them in your dreams, it will begin to happen.

Above all, you must both believe that you can do this and that the successes you achieve are REAL. Trust in your own experiences and be open to them taking whatever shape they want to take. You may be listening for a verbal answer, for example, when signs, feelings, mental images, or so-called “coincidences” are happening all around you. Don’t expect a marching band to ring your doorbell with a singing telegram; instead, listen carefully for whispers in your mind or subtle feelings throughout all of your being and trust them. If you FEEL it’s real, then it’s real.

Lucky for us all, spirit communication seems to be getting easier and easier as the human race evolves and the vibration of the planet rises. So what may have been hard for you yesterday could happen easily tomorrow. I wish you deeply healing, comforting, and undeniably real interactions with your loved ones, Elaine.

When we Can’t Remember Dream Encounters with Spirits

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

My grandmother died when I was 16, and due to family tensions, I wasn’t able to be with her much before her death. In fact, I didn’t get to attend her funeral. Years later while I was pregnant with my second child, I had a VERY vivid dream where I met my Grandma in some kind of station that looked like a church because of the pews we sat on. I could see her perfectly and I could even smell her perfume and Jergens hand lotion. What has plagued me for years is that I know we had a very long conversation, but I don’t remember for the life of me what it was about. I know this wasn’t ‘just a dream,’ because even thinking of it now brings tears to my eyes. In my ‘dream,’ I knew the conversation was coming to an end. I was very sad and crying and I moved into a kneeling position on the floor, resting my head in my grandmother’s lap. When I looked up, she was gone. I have tried my hardest to remember what was said during that conversation. I believe she had some very important information for me, but I just can’t remember it. Is there any way to recall it?

– Tanya

Dear Tanya:

Your experience is very common, and it’s not just because it can be so hard to clearly remember ordinary “dreams.” I’ve read countless tales of people who have had amazing spiritual experiences via astral projection, a dreamlike/visionary state, or near death experiences, who know that they were given very important information, but they just can’t remember what it was!

Even folks who are very adept at remembering regular dreams may have experiences like this where they had a very profound conversation but they can’t remember what was communicated.

This is basically caused by a big shift in one’s vibration. When we’re having this profound experience, our energetic vibration is soaring relative to where it is when we’re fully awake. Just as when we’re dreaming or out of the body, we have no awareness of physical reality, when we’re fully conscious, we lose awareness of these subtler realms of experience.

One aspect of a high vibration is self-awareness. The more self-aware we are, the more spiritually conscious we tend to be. When we’re in a very high vibration, we’re naturally open to and at peace with just about everything. We can then access information that would freak us out when we’re rooted in a more egoistic state.

When we’re in an ordinary state of consciousness and thus rooted in our “lower selves,” we will tend to suppress any insights or information we’re not ready to face or handle yet. Our conscious minds block that information from our awareness. Thus the more we work on rising above the ego, the more we’ll be able to consciously access this higher perspective.

Another tricky aspect of remembering “conversations” we have in subtle realms is the fact that this sort of communication is not really verbal. It’s a mental transference of ideas and energies; no words are truly spoken. Any words that we remember are words our own minds supplied to interpret the information given.

So remembering a conversation like this is sort of like trying to remember all the thoughts you had while staring out over the ocean. Hours later, can you recapture them all? Or are they sort of mixed up in a vague jumble? Think of a time yesterday when you were alone for at least a half an hour, when you didn’t talk to anyone. What all did you think about? It’s hard to recall such details when nothing is ever put into words.

There is a way to bridge the chasm between these dimensions, and that’s to raise our waking vibration via conscious spiritual development. The higher our waking vibration, the more we’ll be able to remember what happens at higher states of consciousness. Further, the higher our vibration, the more we’ll be able to consciously control or induce certain spiritual experiences.

So the first thing I recommend is a concerted effort at spiritual development via endeavors such as meditation, spiritual study, right action, etc. (I’ve written extensively on this subject in the past.) The more you consciously develop as a spiritual being, the more empowered you will be to not only remember “ordinary” dreams, but to lucid dream, remember out of body experiences, consciously interact with spirit guides and remember their guidance, and even meet with your departed loved ones on other planes.

There are even people who can go visit “the other side” at will, and who can help the newly departed cross over by taking them there. While I’ve had dream encounters with spirits like the one you had, as a medium, I stand on this side of the veil and press my face to the window between the dimensions, where I can see and perceive the hand signals, crude drawings and little notes of spirit communication. By contrast, there are some people who can actually consciously travel to the other side. If they can do it, I’m sure you and I could too, if we applied ourselves. This is not necessary, however, in order to gain conscious access to guides and loved ones in Spirit.

I recommend you begin by meditating for about a half hour every morning. You might try a guided meditation designed to lead you into “conversation” with spirit guides or your grandmother. Next, affirm that you will visit with her again, and you WILL remember every detail of that visit.

Visualize what you want to have happen. Both during meditation and before you go to sleep, imagine meeting with her. Recall those smells that were so vivid for you in this striking experience you had before. Remember to pray for what you want: pray for spiritual experiences that lead you to greater clarity and awareness of what you need or want to know. You can even directly ask your spirit guides to facilitate this experience for you.

You might also try exercises that involve putting abstract spiritual guidance into words, like automatic writing or plain old journaling. Anything that involves the transference of subtle ideas or impressions into verbal form will strengthen your ability to translate those energies into clear messages. Also, write down whatever you’ve experienced as soon as you wake up or finish meditating, for such experiences tend to “slip away” very quickly as our vibration shifts back to that of physical reality.

A couple more things to remember: First, our loved ones in Spirit usually just come through to comfort us and express their love for us. You had a lot of unresolved feelings because you couldn’t attend your grandmother’s funeral, and I’m sure in part she was just trying to help you to heal those emotional wounds and make peace in your heart with all that happened. This is huge! It could be that this was the whole point of this experience – there may not be any deeper message than that.

Second, when we can’t remember some insight or idea that we sense is very important, or we are just unaware of it, there is usually a good reason. When the time is right, we will know whatever we need to know. I encourage you to trust in the wisdom of Spirit and your own higher self, and relax with faith that when the time is right, whatever you want to know will be revealed to you.

What Happens as We Prepare to Cross Over?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I’m not sure how to word this, but here goes. I’m currently going through what many people face sooner or later – my father is dying from prostate cancer. As I’m watching this process, I’m wondering: when someone is getting close to passing, is the veil between this life and the next thinner for them? Are they seeing or talking to those who have crossed over when they appear to be incoherent or talking nonsense? When they seem to be staring at “nothing,” are they seeing beings we aren’t aware of in the room? As I watch this dying process, I’m hoping that my father is getting some spiritual comfort. If you can explain what actually happens as someone’s spirit is getting ready to exit their earthly body, I’m sure it would comfort not only me, but also everyone who reads your answer. Thank you!

Rosanne

Dear Rosanne:

It’s my understanding that most of the time, both the process of entering a physical body at birth and exiting it at death are gradual. We are given the opportunity to become acclimated to the new plane we are entering, whether that is this physical dimension or the metaphysical dimension of the afterlife.

I first realized that this is how it happens when I had my second child. As I had awakened psychically with my first pregnancy, I was far more spiritually aware the second time around, and this led to some startling experiences and insights.

For example, before I got pregnant, one day I consciously realized that a spirit had been sort of hovering in the back of my psychic awareness for a couple of months. This presence had “moved in” so quietly and was so often present that I had never really noticed it before.

When I realized that “someone” was there and I mentally asked who it was, I was made to understand that this was the spirit of my future baby. This actually “gave me” the idea of having another child, and I just knew it was time to conceive. When I realized this, my husband and I stopped using birth control, and I immediately got pregnant.

Throughout that pregnancy, I was surprised to note that same spirit’s presence – OUTSIDE of my body. As the pregnancy progressed, however, I noticed that the spirit was “outside” of me less and less. Where she was I didn’t know, however, for I couldn’t feel her spirit’s presence inside of me; I could only sense it when it was on the “outside.”

This was very unexpected. It led me to research and explore the question of when a soul enters a body (and for that matter, leaves it.) One popular spiritual belief is that the soul enters the body of the fetus upon quickening (when the baby first kicks), which happens around the fifth month. However, I could feel my daughter’s spirit outside of me long after quickening, so perhaps that is simply the first time the soul enters the body.

Other research and experiences have led me to believe that our earliest days in the physical (when we’re in the womb, and even when we’re newborns) involve a lot of “out of body” experiences. We frequently move back and forth between the non-physical and the physical as we prepare for life on this plane.

I’ve explained all of this because the reverse happens when we die a natural death (by which I mean a death that is not sudden or “accidental”). As our physical bodies begin to shut down, we begin to spend more and more time in our non-physical bodies, exploring the dimension that will soon be our new “home.”

This is very much like moving into a new house. As we make trips between the old house and the new one, there are times when there seems to be a lot of activity in the new house. That’s when we’re there, getting acclimated. There are also lots of times when the new house is dark and quiet because we’re over at the old house, packing up.

With birth, quickening is like when we get those keys to the new house and go over and flip on the lights at the new place. This doesn’t mean that we stay in the house from that point forward. We’re still making trips back and forth between the old place and the new one, bringing the things we’ll need over.

Even after we’re born, however, we won’t always be fully present in the new place. There are times (such as when we’re sleeping or out of the body) when we won’t be “home.” In fact, whenever we’re really “spaced out,” we’re not fully in our bodies. It’s like we’re “out back” in the yard, where we may not hear someone knocking at the door, trying to get our full attention.

I don’t know that the veil is thinner between this world and the next when someone is dying, though that certainly may be the case. I do believe that pregnancy creates sort of a vortex between this world and spiritual planes, so death certainly may do the same thing. Regardless, the behavior you’re describing of “talking nonsense” and staring at “nothing,” is definitely common of the dying, both because they are awakening to a new dimension and because the process of death draws lots of “moving help” from loved ones and guides in Spirit.

Just imagine all those loved ones who have moved from the old neighborhood to a new one when they hear the news that someone dear to them is about to arrive. They’re naturally excited and anxious to reunite with this “dying” person, and so they rally around them to help. The dying person may thus have all sorts of “visits” or encounters with non-physical beings, and when they return to this plane, they may tell us what and who they saw while they were “out.”

We of course can’t visit that new neighborhood with them until we prepare to move there ourselves (by dying) – unless we develop the ability to perceive subtle energies. A psychic or medium, for example, is someone who is fully rooted in the physical dimension but who has developed the ability to perceive that which lies beyond and beneath it. Such a person may be able to sense the spirits who visit the dying person.

Because there is a lot of spiritual activity surrounding transitions, it’s not unusual for someone to discover their own psychic inclinations at such a time. If they’re clairvoyant, they may actually see the astral body or “spirit” of the person depart the physical body at the moment of death, or they may see beings of light or loved ones in Spirit as they come to help that person cross over. If this is the first time this has ever happened for them, it can be a mind-blowing and life changing experience.

At the same time, when a loved one is dying, even gifted mediums may not be able to perceive much that they usually can because their vibration may be unusually low due to grief. So if you’re not seeing anything, it doesn’t necessarily mean you lack the “sight.” To try to tune in to all that is happening on a spiritual level, you just need to raise your vibration, perhaps via prayer, meditation and making peace with the death of your loved one.

Please remember that even in death (actually, especially in death), we create our own realities. Thus it is wise to expect the best, both for your sake and your father’s. I would talk to him about the beautiful reunions awaiting him and the bright new beginning he’s heading for in his “new life.” There are lots of wonderful books about near-death and between life experiences you could read to him as he’s preparing to cross over. You might start by searching amazon.com for Michael Newton, Ph.D., but I recommend you ask Spirit and your own intuition to guide you.

I wish you and yours deep peace, comfort, faith and hope.

Little Signs of Loved Ones in Spirit

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I lost my mum a year ago, and ever since then, I have felt lost and very depressed. Sometimes I wake up thinking about her. Does this mean she’s been visiting me, or is it happening out of grief? My daughter was six weeks old when my mother passed, and now she frequently points at the wall or empty space and smiles. Could she be sensing my mother’s presence? Thank you for your time, Soul Arcanum, and God bless you for the work you do.
– Lauren

Dear Lauren:

Your mother is indeed trying to come through to you, but your depression is keeping your vibration too low for conscious contact, so she is coming through when you’re most receptive: when you’re unconscious or just coming out of that state. When you wake up thinking of her and then remember she has passed, your vibration plummets, and the connection is broken.

Further, your daughter is indeed sensing your mother’s presence. This reminds me of a similar experience of my own, way back when I first began to consciously perceive subtle energies. I’d been very close to my departed grandmother, and she would sometimes just pop into my mind. This had happened frequently over the years, but I had never really questioned it. When I started to delve deeper, I began to sense her presence. When I then “looked” for her around me, I literally saw (with my physical eyes) a ball of purple energy in mid air. Part of me presumed this was “her,” and part of me wondered if I was “seeing things.”

One day I was sitting on the floor with my son, who was about a year old, when my grandmother popped into my mind. As I had begun to do, I “looked up” for her and saw that big ball of purple energy. At the same moment, my son (who was sitting with his back to me, and couldn’t see where I was looking) looked up and just STARED at the same spot. He didn’t “talk” to it or anything, but he seemed to be in the same trancelike state I fall into during spirit communication.

This happened again a number of times. I would sense my grandmother and then “see” her, and my son would seem to do the same. Had I not been seeing something too, it would have been easy to assume that he was just staring off into space.

We are constantly receiving signs from various spiritual sources. Usually, signs from departed loved ones are designed to just let us know they are with us; they thus tend to be brief and simple. Signs from guides/angels are designed to guide us and answer our questions. A loved one might send a certain memory of them into our minds over and over again, while a guide might prompt us to get up and go for a walk just in time to meet the new friend we’ve been praying for, or slow down just in time to avoid an accident.

Our own higher/intuitive selves are also constantly guiding us as well. It’s usually our own intuition that sends up a warning flag when someone is trying to deceive us, or that alerts us when we meet someone we’re destined to know and love well.

Since we are constantly sending and receiving information at this subtle level, often it’s hard to distinguish where a sign is coming from. Here I’ll explain some of the signs that are usually from a loved one in Spirit so you can recognize them and invite more of the same.

First, understand that the better we are at perceiving subtle energies, the more signs we’ll receive, and that we will be sent signs at the subtlest level we are able to recognize. The more psychic we are, the more “technology” we have for communication. If we have a computer with a high speed internet connection, someone in China won’t travel all the way around the world to get a message to us – they’ll do it “virtually” by emailing us. If we haven’t developed spirit communication abilities at all, it’s like we’re living in a shack in the middle of nowhere. The only way spirits can reach us is to make the tremendous effort to travel to our door, so we won’t receive messages often, and only in dire circumstances.

Some of the subtler (and thus more common) ways spirits will try to connect involve visiting us in our dreams, sending feelings of love and comfort, and planting thoughts and memories of themselves in our minds.

Meeting us in dreams is one of the easiest ways to connect with us because our vibration rises as soon as we fall asleep, and when we’re in the astral, we aren’t restricted by a limiting belief system. Spirits will also just blanket us in feelings of love or comfort, but these signs are so subtle and abstract that we often assume we are fooling ourselves with wishful thinking and dismiss them. Spirits also plant thoughts of themselves in our minds. We’ll be doing something else when suddenly we realize thoughts about that person have been running in our mental background.

If spirits can’t get our attention at this subtle level, they may try to speak to us through someone who can, such as a medium. Spirits will actually plant the subconscious idea in someone to go see a certain medium for a reading so that the medium can consciously relay their messages, and that person will think this idea about getting a reading was their own.

Receptive people can also serve as unconscious mediums. If you’re grieving for your grandfather and your friend Mary is receptive, she may find herself saying exactly what Grandpa used to say to you all the time, and just when you’ve been talking about him to her, and she may never realize why she said what she did. This is Grandpa using the most open channel he can find to let you know he’s around.

If we’re unable to recognize messages at this level, then spirits may try to do something more dramatic by causing some sort of physical or quasi-physical manifestation. The effort it takes to breach the gap between the non-physical and physical dimensions is enormous, however, and it takes a lot of skill, so these signs are less common. Some of these subtler physical signs may include seeing something out of the corner of our eyes, hearing someone say something in our minds, smelling something when no one else does, feeling like the hair is standing up on the back of our necks or like the temperature around us has shifted, etc.

If none of these do the trick and the spirit has both the skill and energy to manifest more “tangible” signs, we may have a literal vision of the spirit with our physical eyes or hear them with our physical ears. We may smell them and not be the only ones able to do so. We may literally feel them touch us or feel their weight sitting beside us on the bed. Physical objects may manifest or disappear.

Spirits also use electronics to try to reach us. They often appear in photos as orbs or vague energies and cause lights to flicker, radios to turn on, and phones and doorbells to ring. Spirits have even been known to speak through radios, show up on videotape, send emails and make actual phone calls from beyond. For more information on this, search the ‘net for EVP – Electronic Voice Phenomena.

Sadly, people often reject all but the most striking signs from Spirit. As I’ve just explained, dramatic messages are rare, so the better we get at recognizing subtle cues, the more signs we’ll receive.
