Do You Sometimes Feel Disconnected from Spirit?

Dear Soul Arcanum: Do you feel that once you are connected with Spirit, you are always connected with Spirit? As a psychic, lately I have been feeling extremely disconnected from Spirit, almost as if my guides have stopped speaking to me, but it seems to always happen right before Mercury goes retrograde.
– B.

Dear B.:

Thanks for this great question. I think many people view a consciously developed connection to Spirit sort of like “enlightenment.” Once you attain it, you’re “enlightened” and will be so forevermore. In truth, there are many things that can cause us to feel disconnected.

Staying connected is sort of like “staying in shape.” Getting there in the first place is the hardest part, but we can’t then forget about it: we have to maintain it by practicing the habits that led us to success in the first place, and by paying attention to how we feel and what is needed on a regular basis.

Basically, to consciously communicate with guides and others in Spirit, we have to maintain a high frequency or vibration. I’ve written about how to go about this in depth in many other articles. If we stop doing things to keep our vibration high, or start doing things that will lower it, then it’s natural to get disconnected.

Since this is a recurring experience for you, I’m assuming that you’re not doing anything obvious to disconnect, like using your ability in ways you know you shouldn’t, or making life choices that you know are wrong. Once we’ve been “allowed past” a certain point spiritually, so to speak, we not only have greater power to work with spiritual laws, but we also suffer greater consequences when we fail to honor them. If most folks are walking through life, then consciously connecting with Spirit is like learning how to fly. We can see farther and go wherever we want to go much faster, but if we crash, we have a long ways to fall.

I don’t feel you’ve blundered, however. What you’re experiencing is much more common – what we might call natural “wear and tear” on your conscious connection to Spirit. We all struggle with this, because unless we constantly counteract it, life itself will tend to make us disconnect. Every time we react to an experience with negative emotion, our vibration lowers. Every time we get stressed out about anything, we pop out of connection mode. Life these days is harried and full of distractions and stress. Maintaining a clear, healthy, conscious spiritual connection is a lot like maintaining a strong, flexible, radiantly healthy body. Even with daily care and attention, everyone gets “sick” or weary sometimes.

So while we can aim to remain constantly, perfectly connected, we should be prepared for life to happen. It’s human nature to get distracted by dramas or to start to take things for granted after a while, and when we do that, they naturally start to slide. When we see them sliding, our appreciation of them is renewed, and then we put more focus and effort into them to restore them. We go through this up and down cycle in all areas of our lives all the time.

Since we’re both psychics, let’s look at readings as an example. When we first begin to read for others, it’s all fascinating and amazing. We love to tune in and work with people this way; we can’t get enough of it. Years later, however, it’s become routine. Now we’re more interested in our personal lives or our latest spiritual interest, and we may start to rush through meditation or readings so we can do what we “want” to do. This is when the disconnection starts. Spirit hasn’t changed: we’ve changed. As a church bulletin near my house reads, “If God [Spirit] feels far away, who moved?”

So the first thing to do when you feel disconnected is to examine how you may have changed. Look for the patterns involved. This is where Mercury Retrograde comes in. While I’m no astrologer, I do know that Mercury rules the mind and communication, and when a planet is retrograde, it means the issues it governs will be obscured or unavailable. Thus it makes perfect sense that Mercury Retrograde could throw a glitch into spirit communication.

Instead of feeling thwarted by this astrological influence, however, I recommend you decide that this is a helpful period of realignment. This is a time when life is forcing you to stop and get back on track in whatever ways you’ve gotten off. It’s a period when you’ll be pushed to move past your prior limits, reevaluate your approach, and repair or resolve issues that need your attention. It’s a time when it will be easier to see your life and your spiritual path in a new light. Feeling disconnected will motivate you to remember how important your connection to Spirit is, and to restore and recharge it if need be.

So whenever this happens, stop and ask yourself how you have changed from times when you felt strongly connected. Have you dropped some of the habits that got you connected in the first place? If not, do you need to let go of them and try something new? Has your desire for and appreciation of your connection grown dim with time? Have you gotten lazy with your meditation or other disciplines? Has your faith become tarnished by your interpretation of your life experiences? Are you being hard on yourself, and thus lowering your vibration? Has your personal life become dramatic and distracting? Has your enthusiasm waned?

I go through periods of feeling disconnected too, and it is usually the result of an emotional upset that threw me “off center,” distracted me from my higher purpose and lowered my vibration. To remain consciously connected, we have to constantly work through the hurt, fear and anger that arise in response to our life experiences. If we don’t deal with our own “stuff,” we won’t be able to help others deal with theirs. When I don’t know how to realign with my best self and my peak abilities, I just start doing the things that have worked for me before: meditating, eating really well, exercising, reading positive books, eliminating negative or distracting influences, energy healing work, practicing kindness and compassion, cultivating gratitude for all I’ve been blessed with, and remembering my many amazing spiritual experiences.

Don’t be dismayed or think you’re doing something wrong if you feel disconnected sometimes. Throughout history, shamanic cultures around the world have undertaken vision quests to consciously reconnect with Spirit. Even Jesus went off for 40 days in the wilderness, and the Buddha fasted and meditated for 40 days under the Bodhi tree. Now and then, we all need to work at transcending mundane reality and elevating our awareness of Spirit. If the simple suggestions above don’t work, you might explore the idea of going on your own vision quest. It doesn’t have to be a week of fasting in the wilderness; it can be any day that you set ordinary life aside for the express purpose of reconnecting with Spirit.

How Do You Know You’re Ready for Psychic Development?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I’ve long been interested in developing my own psychic abilities, but something in me keeps holding back. Are there reasons one should NOT pursue this? How do you know when you’re ready, when this is what you’re supposed to do?
– Jan

Dear Jan:

It has been my experience that the way one approaches psychic development – the quality of energy one puts into it – will determine the quality of the experiences that unfold. The following questions will hopefully illuminate the attributes that facilitate a pleasant, positive, successful psychic journey.

Fear/Faith

Do you believe the Universe is a benevolent place? Do you trust your own judgment, or do you dismiss your own experiences as “unreal” if they don’t match what you’ve been taught to believe by others? Are you afraid of delving into psychic matters?

Faith is important because it both fuels success and protects us from negativity. Whatever we focus upon expands, so if we explore psychic matters with fear that we will come to harm, we will have scary experiences. One does not have to be totally fearless, mind you; a little fear of the new and as yet unknown is what I call excitement! Fearing eternal damnation, however, is not the kind of fear you want to push through. Lose the fear by educating yourself first.

Ethics

Do you have a strong sense of integrity? Are you honest with others and yourself? What is your motivation for delving into psychic matters?

Integrity is important because psychic knowledge is a huge responsibility. We will be held accountable for our knowledge, therefore, those who unwittingly blunder may feel the undesirable effects of that “mistake,” but those who should know better and choose to do wrong will experience far greater consequences. Picture a child riding a tricycle and crashing full speed into a tree, versus a man driving a Porsche full speed into a tree – the greater power of the Porsche means greater consequences if mistakes are made.

Respect

Do you have a healthy respect for spiritual phenomena? Can you respect these matters without fearing them?

This is important because those who play at spirit communication and fail to respect psychic processes are generally careless, and often attract mischievous entities and undesirable experiences. This approach can become a pointless game or drama – which is exactly what these folks signed up for.

Timing

Is your life sailing along smoothly for the most part, or do you have a lot of dramas to manage? Do you have the time and the inner resources to devote to psychic development now?

Timing is important for obvious reasons. If we’re already overwhelmed with normal life, how can we expect to take on a new paranormal realm of experience? One must master one level of experience before messing around with another. To leap ahead would be like the little boy on the tricycle getting behind the wheel of that Porsche.

Courage

Are you willing to face and conquer your own fears? Are you at peace with the fact that there is a shadow side of life? Are you prepared for your personal life to be turned on its head?

Courage is essential because we will be tested as we move forward. These tests are similar to driving tests; they’re meant to prevent us from getting hurt. Before we’re allowed to take off down the road in a Porsche, we have to prove we can handle ourselves on slippery pavement, in unfavorable conditions, etc. Also, when we begin to develop psychically, our personal lives often get turned upside down because as we devote ourselves to this path, the people and circumstances that could hinder us naturally get cleared out of our way.

Physical Health:

Are you strong and healthy? Do you use drugs (either recreational or medicinal) on a regular basis? Do you have unhealthy addictions to food, alcohol, drama, certain people – whatever – that are getting the better of you? Do you enjoy high energy and a sense of well-being?

Physical health is important because a high vibration is needed to access psychic realms. If we strain for those realms while in poor health, it’s like someone who is out of shape trying to climb a mountain. It will be much harder (if not impossible), and the odds of getting hurt are greater.

Emotional Health:

Are you emotionally stable? Have you moved past the common pattern of dependent/codependent, victim/rescuer? Do you take responsibility for what you create in your life, and do you expect others to do the same?

Emotional health is important because opening psychically means opening to outside influences. If we are emotionally fragile or unbalanced, then when we are down or out of control, we’ll attract similar energies, which will just send us further in that direction. It can be overwhelming to feel others’ emotions. We’re all doing this the time, of course, but before we cultivate even greater sensitivity, we’re wise to have our own emotions balanced.

Psychological Health:

Are you clear-thinking and discerning? Are you grounded in this reality? Are you engaged in other strenuous studies, or are you ready for new challenging courses? Are you curious and prepared to study and practice?

Psychological health is important because it’s so easy to lose touch with common reality when we move into this realm where incredible things happen right and left. This is one of the biggest risks in psychic development. We’re all familiar with the stereotype of the “New Ager” who sees meaning in every dust mote and blade of grass she encounters. As with most stereotypes, there is some truth to this one; we have to be very grounded psychologically to walk the fine line between being open-minded and being so far “out there” that we can no longer relate to others.

Spiritual Health:

Do you strive for the high ideals of love, forgiveness and compassion in your daily life? Do you have a sense of yourself as part of a larger whole? Do you feel connected to God/Spirit/the Divine? Is a desire to grow spiritually a central driving force in your life?

The more we trust in Spirit, the more open we are to being helped by Spirit. By aligning with high ideals, we align with Divine guidance and with the conditions essential to a positive psychic experience.

Beliefs:

Do you believe psychic ability is real and possible? That it is natural and normal? Have you ever had psychic experiences yourself? Did you trust those experiences as real? Are you well-read regarding psychic subjects?

It is wise to maintain healthy skepticism, but an active disbelief in psychic abilities will bar us from them. This has been proven in experiment after experiment; those who believe in psychic abilities demonstrate the most psychic ability.

Being Called

Finally, do you feel called to develop psychically? Are you fascinated by these subjects, and do you feel compelled to explore them?

While meeting the above criteria is helpful, it’s not essential. A strong calling from deep within is all you really need. You don’t have to wrangle with the questions above if your heart knows its true path. Just honor that calling, and you will be led.

I don’t want to give the impression that psychic development is only for a perfect chosen few, or that it is rare or even hard to achieve. No one is 100% together. Heck, I felt intimidated by the above questions, and I wrote them! If you’re not ready, however, you won’t go as far as fast, and your path may be bumpier. If you approach this with a solid foundation, it can be an easy, wondrous, delightful journey.

Her Pendulum Isn’t “Working”

Dear Soul Arcanum: I bought a pendulum from a website, and no matter how many questions I ask it, it doesn’t swing for me. How come? Is there any power infused in it at all? A fortune teller told me I will never win big in the lottery. Do you think this is true? How can I get winning numbers with a pendulum?
– S.

Dear S.:

I would be very surprised if you had written that you WERE able to get winning lottery numbers with your pendulum.

First, there is nothing “magical” in the pendulum itself. It’s just an inanimate object that can be used as a tool for accessing our own higher awareness. No “magic” is infused in the object; the magic must come from within. Hence, the quality of information that that we can access with a pendulum will depend on our own inner development. If we’re not very “enlightened,” then we certainly can’t expect to work miracles (such as winning the lottery) with a pendulum.

Everything in the universe has a vibration, and that vibration determines the quality of its energy/experience. Psychic ability is found at the upper range of vibration for the Earth plane. So-called “fortune tellers” generally vibrate below that level. They may at times stretch “up” into that range, but on the whole, they’re too focused on the material world to consistently be able to access meta-physical information. Psychics have a very high vibration, but there are some who are even higher, like mediums and spiritual healers. Then there are spiritual teachers, monks and ascetics who are so high up there it’s a wonder they’re physically still here at all.

By contrast, those who expect to win the lottery tend to have a much lower vibration than psychics. First, their focus on material wealth is a world away from higher spiritual awareness. While natural abundance is a divine blessing, attachment to physical wealth is born of fear. There’s nothing wrong with desiring abundance so long as our priorities remain straight.

Lottery seekers also tend to have weak wills. They may say they want very badly to win, but if you ask them what they are willing to do to attain that wealth on their own, you will get the real story – one full of excuses about how they can’t, they wouldn’t know where to start, etc.

As our will is central to forming our future experiences, folks who want millions just handed to them should bet on it NOT happening. If they owned their power as creators of their own experiences, instead of grasping at the unlikely “solution” of winning the lottery, they’d just focus on abundance and let it come through whatever doorway was most open. They tend to feel frustrated and cheated in life, which just lowers their vibration further. They are simply not in harmony with success and fulfillment, nor with psychic ability.

When our motivation is self-focused, our vibration plummets. When we are full of love, compassion and the desire to serve others, then our vibration soars into the psychic range. It’s really very simple if you think about it. Picture that psychic ability is available to anyone – at an altitude of a mile up. We can “float up” there via meditation, or use different practices to reach that vibratory level. The more we purify our hearts and minds, the lighter we become. This is sort of like filling ourselves with helium. Every time we allow doubt to enter in or we become self-focused, grasping, fearful, frustrated, etc., we get heavier and start sinking back down to the ground again. To be able to freely float up and stay aloft, we have to stay “light.”

The safe and reliable path to psychic development is to purify the heart and mind of negativity so that one naturally rises into that range. Someone who abides at the upper reaches of the physical dimension’s vibratory range has to actually work at staying grounded in “this reality” just as much as those who are “heavy” have to work at accessing higher realms.

The first thing anyone should do if they wish to develop psychic ability is engage in some serious self-analysis. Many lottery seekers will quit reading right here, because this just sounds like too much darn work. That’s perfectly fine – they’ll eventually tire of feeling like life is an unfair, uphill battle and become motivated to examine how they’re creating their own experiences.

For those who are still reading, please note that knowing and purifying oneself of selfish motivations and negativity is essential to spiritual growth and psychic development. You must ask yourself WHY you wish to develop (or for that matter why you think and do everything in life). If you want to be psychic because you want to win the lottery or know whether your spouse is cheating on you, you’re in for a long, frustrating journey. If you want to understand the nature of life, to know that there is indeed a benevolent purpose behind it all so that you can help humankind find the faith to carry on, then psychic experiences and powers will fall into your lap with very little conscious effort on your part.

This sense of higher purpose ignites spiritual growth. It shoots your vibration straight up into the realm of psychic ability. Once you’re at that level, lottery numbers are no longer important. You know that what you need will come to you, and you’re so inspired by the view and your potency as a creator and the richness of the NOW that you don’t think at all the way you did when winning the lottery seemed like the answer to your every prayer.

Now, if you did have an altruistic reason for wanting to win the lottery – to help a sick child or even just demonstrate what is possible to the world – it may be workable. Then, however, we have to consider who would be capable of this psychic feat. A fledgling psychic expecting to get winning lottery numbers with a pendulum is a bit like a piano student who has just learned how to plunk out “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” sitting down and trying to play “Flight of the Bumble Bee” like one pianist in 10 million. Nevertheless, with the perfect alignment of energy, it could be done.

The important thing to take from all of this is the knowledge that attachment to the pleasures of the physical world and psychic ability are not a good match. While we all have latent psychic abilities, as with any other sort of skill, we have to develop a strong foundation for their development. Those who are wise will simply focus on spiritual growth with trust that all that follows will divinely fulfill their highest needs.

Hurry up and tell me who to go to so I can get those winning numbers.” If your heart is pure and your intentions are truly selfless, then give your favorite reader a whirl. As purity of intention and the lottery are an unlikely combination, however, then it’s silly to ask a psychic to do something they would have no desire to do and not be good at anyway. It’s a bit like asking a ballerina to build you a suspension bridge – to Hawaii.

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I consider myself to be a pretty positive person who tries to see the good in people as well as in situations. Right now I am working on learning how to manifest what I want by studying how I function as a person and how I can remove the blocks that are limiting my experience. I am living with a man who is very set on seeing the negative aspects of everything that happens instead of the positive ones. He says things like, “Why would anything ever work out when it never has before? Why would I ever get what I want when I never have before?” Now recently we were offered the opportunity to start a business, which would be connected to an already existing business, and I am wondering to what extent my partner’s negative views will interfere with my attempts to create success. I truly believe that this can become a very lucrative, positive endeavor for us. Will his negative energy make it harder for me to manifest what I want? Is it possible for a person to try to manifest something for herself and her partner when the partner doesn’t have faith that it will work out in a good way? Can I make it work with him?
Thank you!
Soul Arcanum

Dear Soul Arcanum:

Soul Arcanum, I get a surprising number of similar questions. It’s rare for two people to be spiritually on the same page at the same time; one person is usually a bit more “evolved” or “together” than the other. Sometimes those roles shift and change, but sometimes, the difference is marked from the start, or a pattern will become apparent over time, where one person pulls ahead as the “giver” and the other person is more the “taker.” What’s really interesting to me is how often “givers” will be the ones putting in most of the energy to maintain the relationship.

Often what givers are getting is a sense of being “loved,” though in truth, the other person is just dependent on them for help, support or energy. Others are in it for the self-esteem boost they get from being such a selfless “saint,” or from feeling like they’re so much more together than the taker. (Observing folks with really messy lives tends to make us grateful for our relatively minor problems). There IS a place for selfless, one-sided giving, but it’s not in key relationships where we expect our energy/investment to be returned in kind. One-sided relationships are fine for ministers/ therapists/ doctors/ healers/ teachers, etc. to have with those they help, but we should seek equals we respect, trust and admire as friends, business partners and lovers. It’s unwise in any relationship to pour our hearts and souls into “negative” people who never make sincere efforts to improve their lives.

Often even relationships that were once wonderful or “perfect” become unhealthy for all involved. I frequently see this in long-term marriages when one partner wakes up and decides to learn and grow. As this partner moves into a new level of understanding and wisdom, she may at first try to share her new spiritual discoveries with her partner, but this is usually an exercise in disappointment and frustration. If she lets go and simply decides to follow her own heart and her own path, her energy will separate even more from her mate’s. Throughout this process the tension is growing. What used to be a good fit is now heavy or restrictive to the progressive partner.

As you mentioned that you’re “learning how to manifest,” I think this is what is happening. Your conscious awareness of the power of positive (and negative) thinking is new, and while you may have known your partner had a bad attitude before, you had no strong desire to be positive yourself. Now you’re singing at a higher note, and the “chord” created by your combined energies is discordant and jarring to your very soul. You try to be unconditionally loving, patient, compassionate, etc., but every time you try to soar and he strikes that negative note, your whole being just cringes. This is your inner guidance telling you that what you’re experiencing is not what your higher self really wants.

When the discordant relationship in question is sexually intimate, it’s especially important to make sure that you’re with someone whose energy is as positive/high as yours, for intimacy is a deep blending of energies. While you may uplift him and make him feel better, he will tend to bring you down, and as you now know, feeling “down” is going to limit your power to manifest your goals and dreams.

In all close relationships (whether we’re lovers, partners or best friends with someone), if the other person’s energy is not harmonious with our own, we will gradually start to change. We will not “be ourselves” anymore, and sometimes, we won’t even realize it until we spend a consistent period of time away from the situation. I used to spend a lot of time with a friend whose life was always in turmoil. Eventually her behavior got more and more disturbing and I pulled away. I recently spent some time with her again, and only then did it strike me how much better I’ve felt NOT being around her. I had returned to my true vibration. When we’re not sure about continuing a troubled relationship, often taking a six-week break like this will realign us with our own true vibration and lead us to clarity.

While it’s great to have an open heart, if we want happiness and fulfillment in relationships, we have to be discerning. People who take responsibility for creating their own realities approach life very differently from those who see themselves as victims of circumstance. In owning their personal power to create for better or worse in their own lives, they enjoy much more success and happiness.

I therefore encourage you to go into business with someone who pumps you up. Find someone whose strengths and weaknesses are complementary to your own. When two positive, conscious creators get together with a common intention, magic happens through the power of synergy. Instead of 1 + 1 = 2, 1 + 1 = unlimited potential.

Also, you’re in the midst of a big personal transition. Not only will your man’s heavy, negative energy weigh you down and potentially limit your success, but your discomfort with his negativity reveals that you’re moving apart in vibration. Should you choose separate paths in the near future, it will be much more complicated if you’re in business together.

Ultimately, deciding whether or not to go into business with your man depends on how you would end up FEELING about all of this. If you’re capable of staying passionately upbeat and positive despite his negative mood, then your energy could prevail, for one who is connected to the stream of pure, positive energy is more powerful than a thousand who are not. That’s a big “if” however, especially to maintain day in and day out. If he “brings you down,” or you get impatient, critical or fed up with him, then both of you will be down, and you know where that will get you.

Choosing a negative person as a partner is choosing a very uphill path. You’re better off on your own, or manifesting a partner who shares your positive beliefs and will match your uplifting, creative energy with some power and wisdom of his or her own.

May you know the thrilling, magical power of synergy, and enjoy a wonderful journey to big success!

How Do Mediums Experience Spirit Communication?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. All rights reserved. :)

You recently ran an inspirational message in which you wrote that one day you realized that memories you had shared with a departed love were running in the background of your mind, and by this, you knew that he was trying to connect with you. Since you’re a medium, it surprised me that you didn’t just know he was there as soon as he showed up. I guess I have no idea how spirit communication works. I mean, I know they don’t call up on the telephone, but can you explain about how you experience communication like this?
– Beth

Dear Beth:

Actually, spirits do sometimes call up on the telephone. (They also affect communication through radios, computers and other electronic equipment). There are even researchers who get voicemails from Spirit! For more information on this fascinating subject, try an Internet search for EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena).

The tremendous majority of spirit communication, however, does not take place through anything the five senses can perceive. It is an inner experience. This only makes sense if you think about it, for spirits are non-physical beings. It takes tremendous energy and interdimensional savvy for spirits to affect things in the physical, or manifest in a “physical” form.

Many people fail to understand how subtle spirit communication tends to be, and thus they fail to recognize much of the spirit contact that is taking place in their own lives at a subconscious level all the time. For example, they may have a “feeling” of the presence of a loved one in Spirit as they are remembering them with affection, but dismiss it as wishful thinking and hold out for a more tangible encounter. While stories abound of loved ones appearing in a ghostly mist at the foot of a bed at the time of their departure from this plane, the tremendous bulk of spirit communication takes place at a mental level. Even when a medium on a platform is looking over an audience member’s head, saying, “I see a gentleman in a tuxedo and top hat standing behind you,” she most likely is “seeing” that in her mind, not in the physical space near that person.

I have also found that the people we are closest to in life are often the hardest to distinguish as “voices” or energies outside of ourselves. People who can connect with friends, coworkers and strangers in spirit are often hurt and confused when they can’t do the same with the love of their lives. I often find that instead of being absent, those most beloved in Spirit are SO CLOSE that we can’t distinguish them as energies distinct from and outside of us. They were “in our hearts” before they crossed over, and they remain in them after.

So just as it can be hard to discern between our own intuition and the guidance of spirit guides, it can be especially hard to discern between our own minds/imaginations and the messages or impressions of dear loved ones in Spirit. If your Aunt Betty came through to me for you in a reading, I would know this is an energy that is “foreign” to me, like a stranger. When my own grandmother comes through however, as she has been for many years now, it’s comfortable and familiar, and I may at first not notice she’s there. (She’s always around, so there is no big shift occurring). Imagine the energetic difference between having your spouse of 25 years slip into bed beside you while you’re reading the paper. You might keep reading without realizing they’d come to bed. Now imagine that a stranger has slipped into bed with you. Pretty hard to ignore!

Further, loved ones we were very close to tend to be around more and come through to us of their own volition, where we have to purposefully reach out to other spirits. While both can and will come through to me when I center myself and try to consciously connect, my own loved ones and guides will reach out while I’m doing various mundane tasks (just as yours will try to do with you). So I may be focused on something else entirely, and then suddenly “notice” that there is a quiet “knocking” at the back of my mind. Often, this takes the form of memories we shared. The most common such “knock” for me is visual images and memories of places we spent a lot of time in together when they were living.

I now know that when I notice certain images are running in the back of my mind, certain spirits are trying to get my attention. If you’re not visual like me, this is sort of like realizing that a certain song is running through your mind if you’re auditory, or a certain feeling is present in some area your being if you’re kinesthetic. When I begin to see images/ memories of my beloved grandmother’s house coming to the surface of my awareness, then I know that she is trying to get my attention. I may be writing this column, taking a shower, doing the dishes, etc. Similarly, when I see images of the high school parking lot and football stadium where I met my first love every day after school, I know he is trying to get my attention. (Why else would a parking lot keep pushing up into my conscious awareness?)

We are all in communication with non-physical entities all the time, but most people are not conscious of it. Imagine that you’ve grown up in a rustic village on a remote tropical island, and due to the limited gene pool, 90% of the population has sorely compromised eyesight. They think this is “normal” of course, and that those who can see tiny things they cannot are either “gifted” or “crazy.” Some “seers” on this island would probably learn to keep quiet about the things they can see when very young. I imagine a child pointing at something and everyone around her saying, “There’s nothing there! You’re crazy!”

Now imagine that a doctor visits the island and makes you a pair of magnifying glasses. Suddenly, your whole world expands. Behind, beneath and between everything you’ve always seen you discover so much more. Those things were there all the while, and a few of the others were perceiving them too, but you were all too shy or scared to talk about it. You are now capable of things you could never do before as well. Of course, the glasses are only good for seeing small things up close; to see the “old way,” you have to take them off.

Becoming conscious of the spirit communication that is ever taking place is much like this. When we “notice” signs “knocking” at the back of our minds and then we turn our conscious attention to it, we put on our “psychic glasses” (attune our vibration to that subtle energy). Then conscious communication can take place. This vibration is not where we want to be when we’re cutting vegetables, driving a car, or even editing papers, however, so spirit communication naturally involves a shift from one state of awareness to another.

“Knocks” from loved ones in Spirit such as the memories/images I describe here are like calling cards from the other side. They announce the arrival of a visitor, and alert us to prepare ourselves for a visit by consciously shifting our awareness.

What’s Happening When Someone “Gives Us the Creeps?”

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I’m a 33-year-old married mother of two. I work as an administrative assistant in a corporate environment. About nine months ago, the company hired a new executive, and while I don’t work directly for him, I often see him around the office and sometimes have to interact with him for my boss. Here’s the thing: he totally gives me the creeps. I don’t know what it is about him. He usually looks away when we make eye contact, but I swear I can FEEL his eyes roving over me when my back is to him. He doesn’t seem dangerous or anything, just creepy. What’s happening here and what should I do?
– Andrea

Dear Andrea:

Thanks for a great question! First we must remember that everything in the universe is composed (ultimately) of energy. Living beings (people, plants, animals) are composed of dynamic energy, which is to say that they are constantly interacting with other energy systems. If you’ve ever had a fuzzy radio station suddenly come through clearer as you approached the receiver to fix the dial, you’ve experienced firsthand the interaction between your energy field/aura and the energy field of the radio.

At some level, we are all aware of these energetic interactions, though for most people this awareness is subconscious. We are drawn to some people and naturally avoid others. When we accurately sense someone looking at us, what we are sensing is their energy interacting with ours. Some clairvoyants can perceive not only the auras of individuals, but also interactions between people’s auras.

These interactions are happening constantly, not only when we literally interact with others, but also when we just think about them. Whenever we give someone our attention, we are giving them energy. For the sake of illumination, we might imagine that non-living objects (such as bowls, spoons, rugs, etc.) are composed of rock, while living beings are like sponges, and energy is like water. When we focus on the bowl, our energy-water just rolls over it. It will be “wet” for a while with our energy, but otherwise unaffected. When we focus on a person, however, she will soak up our energy, and in focusing back on us, she will squeeze some energy-water our way as well.

Praying for someone is a very powerful energy exchange in that it’s a very concentrated, focused flow of positive energy toward that person. Energy healing is similar though even more powerful because the recipient is generally aware and consciously accepting and absorbing that healing energy. Just as healers can use energy to positively affect those they are trying to heal, anyone can use energy to try to do whatever they want to others. If we’re “creeped out by” or afraid of someone, our intuition is alerting us to an undesirable energetic interaction. Further, if we succumb to fear or other negative emotion when this happens, we basically open up our auras to those outside influences.

If you think about this, it only makes sense. When we’re not afraid of someone or don’t give a darn what they think of us, they don’t have the power to affect us. When we worry about what others think or succumb to fear of them, then we are definitely letting them affect us, and this is true both psychologically and at an auric level. People who want things from us that we don’t really want to give naturally make us uncomfortable. This feeling is our intuition raising a self-protective alert.

The more time we spend with people, the more their energy will affect ours. With people who make us feel good, we will open up our energy field the minute we see them coming, because we expect to get a nice boost. With people who generally make us feel bad (whether that means we feel insecure, frustrated, angry, creeped out, jealous, etc.), even though we may “brace” ourselves, we will tend to open up our energy field (unintentionally) as soon as we see them coming by succumbing to negative emotion. That negative emotion lowers our vibration and thus our “psychic defenses” come down. The best “psychic defense” is thus to send out bright loving energy, for it instantly obliterates all darker energies.

When we get over our negative feelings about various people and situations, we do become immune to them, but this is easier said than done much of the time. It’s easier and more effective to radiate love and light than to ignore a source of discomfort, for while we may think we’re ignoring someone, in ignoring them actively, we’re actually thinking about them. It’s sort of like telling yourself not to think about the color yellow.

As for what is happening your case, your coworker is probably fantasizing about you, and you are “feeling” this at a semi-conscious level. Your intuition is alerting you via that “creepy” feeling that his energy is creeping up on you. Then when you “confront” this man with eye contact, he immediately withdraws his energy for he fears being “detected.”

The best thing you can do is drop your fear/uneasiness around him. Start by recognizing that he’s not really doing you any harm, and thank your intuition for “alerting you” to the situation. Then whenever he creeps you out, just counter his energy by turning up your own light. Don’t be antagonistic, just stand very tall in your aura and let the contrast of the feeling/experience remind you to consciously align with something more desirable. Affirm that you live in a reality that is divinely bright and beautiful, where everything happens for a good reason, and only good things come to you. Blind him with a bright smile/burst of light, and then shift your thoughts to something or someone you find divine. While he may still be attracted to your lovely energy, he won’t really be able to get near you, because your high vibration will put you out of his “range.”

For more information on auric interactions, I highly recommend the classic book Hands of Light and by Barbara Brennan.

Discerning Between Spirit Messages and One’s Own Ideas

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I studied to become a medium, became a medium, and went on to become a Reiki Master. I have been doing this for almost three years now. I love to heal for others, and am very comfortable with that work. What I am not quite sure about is how I receive information when doing a reading for someone. While I used to get lots of images, which I could translate easily enough, my reading work has now become more like a “mental conversation” I’m having – with myself. (?) I often wonder if receiving information has just become easier for me, or if I’m “flavoring” what I receive with my own conscious thoughts. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
Paul

Dear Paul:

Thanks for a great question! I have met a number of mediums who were powerful channels in their early years, but who have so much spiritual counseling experience behind them that they often blur the line between channeling Spirit and offering their own advice without realizing it, so you’re wise to remain conscious of your process. I feel, however, that you’re naturally evolving into a more natural/subtle connection with Spirit.

As tuning in has become easier for you, the process has come to require less conscious effort on your part. It’s akin to learning to drive. When we’re very new drivers, we have to consciously think hard about what we’re doing and how we’re doing it. As we become more and more adept at driving, we still go through the same processes, but they become unconscious. We no longer have to think hard about every step in order to successfully navigate where we desire to go. If the quality of your work remains unchanged and you’re able to access all the information you want and need to for your clients, then don’t worry about it.

I’m betting, however, that in addition to becoming less conscious of your process, you’ve begun to pull through deeper guidance. It is relatively easy to tap into dramatic psychic information such as warnings of danger; in fact, most people have such intuitive experiences. As we develop psychically, we learn how to glean information about the past, present and future as relates to worldly concerns about relationships, financial matters, health problems, etc. Further spiritual development will allow us to access even higher guidance regarding matters of personal and spiritual growth. This “higher” information does not come through symbolically like the “lower” information does; it must flow in a stream of consciousness way.

For example, if a client is in line to receive a desired job, we may tune in and be visually shown a green light. Symbols like this can’t capture deeper messages, such as, “You are already receiving many signs from Spirit in answer to your requests, but you are not trusting them. Every time you ask for and receive a sign, you light up, but then begin to feel unworthy of such ‘special treatment’ from Spirit, and disregard the experience as a fluke.” That sort of message must be received in the form of a “mental conversation” of sorts, just as you describe.

While this sort of guidance may be more complex, it’s also subtler. The symbolic information you used to receive had to be deciphered, so it didn’t feel like it was coming from within you. Similarly, loved ones in Spirit come through with distinct personalities and personal messages, and they may also offer verifiable memories and details about their lives on earth to prove their presence, which we certainly can’t fabricate. Profound spiritual guidance, however, comes through in a form very much like our own thoughts, and often without the distinctive mark of a personality, because it comes through our higher selves or spirit guides. As spirit guides have been “talking to us” from inside our heads all our lives, many of us confuse their guidance to our own intuition.

Some people seem to seek and meet distinct guides like a Native American Indian Chief or some other character, but my guides have never personified themselves in this way. Perhaps if I wanted and needed them to, they would. As I believe that the non-physical is a place of direct energetic perception where names and faces are superfluous, I’m quite comfortable with my “anonymous” guides. I identify them by the way they feel, and my sense is that there is a group who is answering me at once.

So how do we know if we are having conversations with ourselves, with our higher selves or with “Spirit?” If the guidance we deliver is wiser and deeper than what we can offer when we’re not tuned in, then we’re obviously bringing through something higher than our own personal opinions. Regardless of where it comes from, however, the important thing is how helpful and useful our guidance proves to be.

To determine the best process for you, everything depends on your aim: Do you want to offer practical guidance on worldly concerns; do you want to bring through evidential messages from loved ones in Spirit; or do you want to help your clients work through the inner issues at the heart of their spiritual growth? If you’re like me, you want to be able to do it all, but if you’re not, that’s fine. Only you can determine the best use of your abilities.

It’s also natural and perfectly acceptable for your aim as a medium to change over time. As mediums evolve and come to know that death is not an end, and that the details we tend to stress about will not really matter in the ultimate scheme of things, they tend to lose touch with the emotional suffering that leads people to seek their help. They may then start to offer what they personally value, instead of what their clients may be after. While looking for the bigger, deeper picture is always wise, we still live here on this glorious earth, where we sometimes need answers to questions that can’t be ignored or denied. When my client is being hounded by bill collectors, her spouse has run off with her best friend, and her teenage son has started a secret gardening project in his closet ;), she needs more than assurance that there are great spiritual lessons in this experience for her; she needs to know what she can do to get from where she is in her “real life” to where she wants to be. I think it would be insensitive of me to offer nothing more than spiritual platitudes and assurance that somehow, everything will be okay.

Mediums must also appreciate the needs of the grieving. Unfortunately, the more experience we have with spirit communication, the less we tend to need and value verifiable messages from beyond. After the excitement wears off, many experienced mediums move on from evidential spirit communication because they forget that other people are still yearning for proof that their loved ones continue to exist and are doing just fine. This is of course perfectly fine, however, for the medium must also allow himself to evolve and grow and explore whatever is calling him as he moves forward on his path.

In summary, I suggest you evaluate your reading work for its practical value, healing power and accuracy. Ponder the range and limits of your abilities, and if they support your conscious aim. If you’re already delivering all the helpful, accurate information you desire to, then don’t worry about your source. If you’ve lost something over the years, however, and can no longer access the powerful details you were once privy to, then I encourage you to go back, retrieve the processes that worked for you before, and add them back into your repertoire. If that doesn’t feel right to you (and my sense is that it may not), then I encourage you to allow yourself to redefine the nature of your work and to flow in a new direction with it.

May your wonderful self-awareness lead you to greater power and success in all you do!

Is Clairvoyance Superior to Tarot?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I recently attended a Spiritualist service for the first time, and I loved everything about it, with one exception. I have been reading tarot for a few years now, and when I mentioned this to a minister there, she was clearly disapproving of my interest in the cards. This really surprised me. I thought that at last I’d found a church I could fit into, so I was pretty disappointed. I understand that you are a Spiritualist minister, so I’m asking you: is it somehow better to be a medium/ clairvoyant than to read tarot? Is there something wrong with reading tarot?

Carol

Dear Carol:

While Spiritualists generally pride themselves on being undogmatic, I too have encountered this attitude toward tarot amongst their ranks. Obviously, it’s unwise to generalize all Spiritualists as sharing the exact same perspective. Many Spiritualists do, however, assert that divination tools are simply unnecessary when we can directly communicate with Spirit, and may be limiting if they become crutches that impede our psychic development. Of course, the main goal in Spiritualism is not predicting the future, but rather proving the continuation of life beyond death, so in some ways we’re comparing apples and oranges here. Generally speaking, however, tarot readers are more limited in the information they can access than mediums/ clairvoyants.

My own psychic journey actually began mildly with “sensing” when something was going to happen, who was on the phone, etc. Then when I was pregnant with my first child, my psychic doors just blew open, and suddenly I was experiencing unprovoked and confirmed spirit communication right and left. At this point I had no control over the spirit communication. It was not something I sought or could initiate, so I began to study something that I COULD control and initiate: tarot. My early professional readings were therefore tarot readings with some spirit communication thrown in if we were “lucky.”

Soon, however, I was led to a wonderful Spiritualist school for the development of my mediumship, where I learned how to initiate spirit communication and more or less control it. It was there that I first encountered some negative opinions about divination tools and in particular tarot. Interestingly enough, as I began to ask Spirit directly for answers, I often got those answers in the form of a mental image of a relevant tarot card. As tarot was the most developed symbolic language in my consciousness, Spirit used it to communicate with me. Despite the disapproval I encountered in school, I did not throw my cards away, for I had come to appreciate some benefits of working with tarot.

For example, when reading in person, I’ve learned that many people are far more comfortable if they have a visual aid they can focus upon. If they see the cards laid before them, even if they don’t know what they mean, they think they can see where I’m getting my information from. Even when I explain that everything is coming from Spirit (and that this is a good thing), many people are reassured by seeing those cards. Similarly, I’ve known some wonderful psychics who read palms, cards or use some other divination tool, who are all the while simply relaying what they get from Spirit anyway. They can’t or don’t want to explain how they’re doing what they’re doing, so they present a method that they know how to explain. I’m all for doing what works so long as the results are positive. If some people are more open to hearing Spirit when they have something tangible to focus upon, that’s fine with me.

Also, I’ve found that tarot spreads can provide the focus, direction and detail necessary to a full and satisfying reading. From Spirit’s perspective, so much of what we worry about is not ultimately that important. So if a client asks, “Should I be worried about losing my job?” Spirit’s answer might simply be, “No. You’re learning valuable lessons through this experience, and you will be provided for and guided every step of the way.” While that’s reassuring and all, that client still probably wants to know if she should be updating her resume or not! In my experience, the best readings offer both the wisdom of higher planes and the mundane details that are so essential to making wise, informed decisions in this world.

Despite all of the above, I no longer use tarot in my readings, for my aim is always to bring through the very highest sources of healing and empowering guidance. I also feel that Spiritualists have a point: in terms of accessing Spirit, tarot and other divination tools are a few times removed from the heart of the message, and the less dependent we are on symbols, the purer our messages will be. Reading tarot is like speaking to Spirit through several intermediaries instead of just going right to the source. First Spirit must orchestrate the selection of those cards that will convey the right messages. The reader then has to accurately interpret the symbols and meanings she personally associates with the cards in light of the situation at hand, and effectively communicate what she’s gleaned to the person asking for guidance. There is a whole lot of interpreting going on here, so there are many junctures where the true message/meaning may be lost or distorted.

Symbolic clairvoyance is a bit purer, for we aren’t dependent upon and restricted to the symbols in the cards, but even this has considerable room for error. If we associate snakes with deception, then to communicate deception, Spirit will show us a snake. Every time we are shown a snake, we may then translate it into “deception,” which would be a mistake, because we need to learn to distinguish between symbolic and literal information. Perhaps the snake is not a symbol at all, but a real live pet, or even a validating bit of information from a loved one whose nickname was “Snake.” Sorting symbolic and literal information is also an issue with clairaudience. For example, I recently did a reading in which I brought through several loved ones from Spirit. I offered two names of loved ones in Spirit (and these were verified by my client), and then I started hearing “Edward…Edward John…John Edward.” On a hunch I then asked Spirit to explain, and perceived that this was a reference to the now famous medium “John Edwards.” This clicked with the client, who said that she is a big fan of John Edwards and had been longing to get a reading with him, but wasn’t sure it would be worth the money and effort it would require.

So with tarot and even clairvoyance and clairaudience, readers often just have to offer whatever they pick up in hopes that the meaning will be clear to whoever they’re reading for. The reader herself may never know whether the information given is symbolic or literal. If, however, the reader has developed the ability to communicate with Spirit above and beyond symbolic language, he or she can simply ask Spirit and get a literal response.

Even if spirit communication is not your goal, if you just want to be able to predict the future and offer psychic guidance, it’s wise to be able to communicate directly with Spirit like a medium, for then there are no limits to the range and quality of information you can bring through. There is nothing “wrong” with reading tarot, so don’t throw your cards away. Just recognize that you can access a higher, clearer connection to Spirit without them, and keep stretching your abilities!

Using All Your Psychic Senses to Read Auras

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum: I’ve been trying to see auras for a while now, and nothing is happening! After reading a book on the subject and trying all the exercises, I finally signed up for a one-day workshop on how to see auras, and though everyone around me seemed to be having a great time, I never saw a thing. Am I missing something about how this all works?
Amy

Dear Amy:

I understand your frustration. It reminds me of when I was in training to become a Spiritualist minister at the School of Spiritual Healing and Prophecy in Lily Dale, New York. While my classmates and I learned all sorts of wonderful things, there were two main categories in the curriculum: energy healing and mediumship. Most of my classmates were more comfortable with energy healing than spirit communication; they were all healers and could feel energy with their hands.

By contrast, I had come to the school because I had been experiencing spontaneous spirit communication and I wanted to learn how to control it in order to help the grieving. This made me much more comfortable with mediumship than energy healing.

On the first intensive day of training in energy healing, we ran our hands over our classmates auras, and everyone was talking about feeling hot spots and cold spots, pockets of energy here and strange vibes there. I, however, wasn’t feeling a darn thing except really inadequate.

Eventually, I summoned the courage to tell the instructor that I had no idea what everyone was talking about. He asked me what I experienced internally while everyone else was feeling all that stuff, and I told him what I was seeing in my mind. I could see colors and patterns of energy and even see where some problems or issues may lie, for my attention would be drawn to that part of the body and symbols would pop up in my mind’s eye. He then laughed and reassured me that I wasn’t unfit for energy healing work – I was just very visual/clairvoyant.

The point of the story is that we must all trust and work with our own natural strengths and abilities. No two people are exactly alike, so no two healers or psychics will perceive subtle information the same way. Everyone has a primary modality. Some people are visual like me, so when they’re accessing psychic information, they tend to do so clairvoyantly. Some people are more auditory/clairaudient, and some people are more kinesthetic/clairsentient. (There are other modalities too, but these are the big three.)

It can be very frustrating for people who are primarily kinesthetic to try to get visual information, just like it was hard for me to try to get clairsentient information. Further, most people are only familiar with the clairvoyant approach to viewing auras. As there is an abundance of this information available in books and on the internet, I won’t go into it here. Following are some ideas for those who are more auditory or kinesthetic.

First, regardless of the specific techniques you use, you must get centered in a very high vibration to consciously access psychic information. There are lots of ways to get into a high vibration; I’ve written on this extensively in other articles.

Next, you have to shift your focus beyond the physical, or you’ll only use your physical senses. To begin to focus metaphysically, center your awareness on the space surrounding objects. If you’re visual, you would gaze at something living (a person, animal or plant), and then shift your attention from the object to the so-called empty space around it. You can do this if you’re not visual too by simply centering your attention on the space around the subject.

If you’re primarily auditory, begin by getting into a high vibration and then mentally focus your attention on the being/person you’re wanting to read. You don’t have to look at this person since you’re not going to be processing information visually. Just focus on them and imagine a telephone cord connecting the two of you. Now mentally ask that person (or your spirit guides) to please tell you about them. Allow thoughts and words to come into your awareness.

While you could ask for a description of this person’s aura, if you’re able to get that information clairaudiently, you might as well skip right past that and ask for deeper psychic information. After all, the important thing in reading auras is what your perceptions mean.

For example, as I write this article, I’m sitting in a cafe and there is an older gentlemen sitting at a table to the right of me. First I mentally ask his permission to read his aura, and I feel a welcoming sort of response. I ask my spirit guides to give me the experience of someone who is primarily auditory. I mentally shut out any vibes from other people, focus my attention on this one connection, open up and ask for information.

The first thing I hear is It’s a shame. I ask what is a shame, and I mentally hear a whole story about the man’s son, who has grown distant from the rest of the family. The son is off doing his thing now, and I understand that this man wishes they had a closer relationship.

Now let’s try the same exercise from a kinesthetic perspective. For this approach, I imagine myself in his body. (You can also do this through a connective cord, as above, if you’re worried about taking on others’ energy.) I imagine that I am in his body, and as I do so, I feel sort of wistful and sad. When I ask why I feel sad, I have the feeling of holding a baby in my arms. This is not physical, of course; it’s more like a feeling in my own aura. I have the auric feeling of cradling a baby and at the same time, I see a baby in his arms. (I can’t turn off the visual information. Our primary modalities are like that – they’re always processing whatever we’re experiencing, and all modalities are always working together to foster understanding.) I now know that he feels wistful about one of his children.

You can get all sorts of information to flesh things out by using your other modalities. If you’re wanting to read someone’s aura to learn about their personality, strengths, weaknesses, etc., you can do it the same way. Just get into a high vibration, and either let things come to you or ask questions and then allow insights to flow in whatever way works best for you.

Trust what you perceive and remember that you can always ask further questions to get more information and clarification/confirmation. Also, while you’re wise to work with your strengths, the more well-rounded you are in your development, the fuller your awareness will be, so it’s wise to practice getting information through all of your psychic senses.
