Coping with Sudden Psychic Awakening

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)
Dear Soul Arcanum:

Two years ago I basically died. I stopped breathing, and while I was medically dead, I was pulled into a vortex where I saw obelisks with weird glyphs on them. Some were black and some white, and they were in a sandstorm. I was in a place I felt I had been before, and I heard a soft female voice speaking to me. She didn’t speak English, yet I knew what she was saying. She read something to me, and then she said, You must return. You’re needed. I was then sucked back and painfully reinserted into my body. I was in a state of shock for a week, and then I began to become aware of more things than any human could be. I’m now clairvoyant to the point where I scare myself. I have really frightening recurring dreams, and when I touch physical objects, I see things. It’s weird! I have always had a touch of psychic ability, but this is way more than that, and I don’t know what to do with it all. I have a friend who is clairvoyant, and she said that I have a psychic aura that is growing. She also said that my light is darkness. What does that mean? Can you help me sort this out?

– Stephanie

Dear Stephanie:

In the West, psychic matters have largely either been dismissed as utter nonsense or are considered so frightening that the subject is taboo. By contrast, in many other cultures, psychic experiences are an accepted part of everyday life.

I think a lot of our struggles with spiritual awakening are culturally driven. Since the U.S. is such a melting pot of various peoples, we don’t have traditions or teachings with which to make sense of our psychic experiences. Further, the breakdown of organized religion has left most of us without any sort of spiritual community to lean upon during times of spiritual crisis.

Most people don’t give much thought to spiritual matters until something happens that totally rocks their world, and then they have no one they can go to for help and advice. When they get on the internet in search of answers, many end up at my virtual doorstep.

As I hear this sort of thing all the time, I can reassure you that what you’re going through is quite common. For most people, awakening is a gentle, gradual process. When it happens suddenly, as it did with you, it tends to create a lot of fear and stress.

Near death experiences are a very common cause of sudden spiritual awakening. Since sudden awakenings strike people who have not been consciously preparing for them, those people often feel really overwhelmed. Instead of trying to shut down or close themselves off because they’re afraid, what they need to do is stop focusing on the symptoms (the psychic phenomena), and instead focus on the cause of their discomfort (their need for greater spiritual development.)

It’s sort of like you read a book about being a pilot and then you were put in a fighter jet and told to fly. Instead of worrying about all the ups and downs, you must focus on getting the skills you need to have a safe, smooth journey.

Some key elements of preparing for spiritual awakening include healing old wounds to the psyche; purifying your being; and cultivating faith, compassion, spiritual knowledge and wisdom.

To heal old psychic wounds, you must cultivate self-awareness via tools like journaling, meditation, therapy, deep reflection, etc. You have to face and make peace with your own inner shadows. A big part of this involves learning to forgive yourself and others for past mistakes. It also involves accepting the truth that everything happens for a good reason, for this empowers us to stop blaming things outside ourselves (including God) for our suffering. Only then can we make peace with the past and relax about the future.

Purifying your being involves clearing your body, heart, mind and spirit of blocks and lower energies. On a physical level, this may mean changing your diet and working with something like yoga. (I highly recommend yoga, for its very purpose is to facilitate spiritual awakening.)

To purify your heart and mind, you’ll have to let go of anything of a lower nature and consciously cultivate higher energies. For example, if you harbor resentment against someone, you’ll have to learn to forgive them. If you lust after fame and fortune, you’ll need to cultivate awareness of what’s truly of lasting value to your soul and teach yourself to focus on those things first and foremost.

Setting a clear, high intention will give you tremendous psychic protection. If you don’t have any conscious intention at all, you’ll encounter all sorts of crazy situations. It’s like wandering aimlessly around town – you could end up in some beautiful museum, but you could also end up in a ghetto.

Further, as you learn how to lift yourself out of fearful self-interest to act with love and compassion, you’ll gain control over the quality of your spiritual experiences. For example, through awareness that fear draws frightening entities while love and compassion summon angels and other beings of a higher spiritual nature, you can manifest the quality of experience you desire. It’s essential that you own your power to create your own reality. You’re doing this anyway, so you might as well seize the reins and create wonderful, positive spiritual experiences instead of negative or frightening ones.

You must also learn to trust that whatever comes up for you is designed to teach you something. When you encounter shadows in your outer experience, they always reflect shadows in your own nature, or else they couldn’t enter your experience. Any darkness that comes up is reaching for your attention, and when you shine the light of your awareness on it, it will naturally disappear.

I feel this is what your friend meant when she said that your light is darkness. You have divine light within you that is waiting for you to let it shine. Right now there is much darkness in your aura because you’re afraid, and because you have yet to become aware of all that is happening within you. As you become more aware, you’ll turn that light on.

You’re also being called to learn to love all aspects of your being, and to trust your own inner guidance by pursuing all that you feel drawn to explore and letting go of all that you are guided to release from your life. The more you trust and act on your intuition, the faster you’ll find new balance.

I recommend you read up on psychic matters and undertake focused spiritual studies and training, for the more you learn, the more comfortable you will feel. This will help you leave fear behind and manifest a higher level of experience. Ask your inner being to guide you to the spiritual practices and information that are right for you.

Finally, I believe that everyone who is psychically active should develop a strong relationship with their spirit guides/ angels. These spiritual beings want to help, teach and guide us, especially as we evolve in spiritual consciousness. As they exist at a high vibration, you must shift into a high vibration to consciously connect with them. (I’ve written extensively on how to raise your vibration in other articles.)

Once you create a stronger spiritual foundation, it will be natural for you to have wonderful spiritual experiences, and easy for you to access Spirit’s help and guidance whenever you need it.

Sorting Dark Spirits from Light and Other Confusing Psychic Matters

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

Over the past two years, I’ve spontaneously started developing all sorts of new psychic abilities. The progression has been very confusing and intense. Too many things are happening to name them all here, so I’ll focus on the most confusing: Why is it that in my conversations with other people, they say things they don’t remember saying, which are repeated time and again until the actual event happens? Also, when will I be able to weed out dark spirit voices from light ones? Thank you for your time, effort and energy!
– Rachel

Dear Rachel:

In my early days of psychic awakening, I also often mixed up what people had actually told me with what I had picked up psychically, and I imagine this is a rather common experience. For example, a budding psychic may sense what someone is thinking but remember it as something that they actually said.

Picture that you’re having an argument with your husband, and he says out loud, “Yes, dear,” but then while your back is turned to him, he mentally says to himself, “What a nag!” In your mind, you hear his nasty comment, and you whirl around and lash back at him. He could protest like crazy that all he said was “Yes, dear,” but you know better.

This is not exactly how it works, however. It’s more common to pick up on someone’s true feelings and intentions as opposed to actual words from their minds. In fact, many people mistakenly believe that if someone can “read their mind,” they can hear their thoughts word for word, but I’ve never known anyone who could do that. Instead, mind reading is tuning in to what someone really feels, means or intends.

So if someone is pretending to be friendly but they have some hidden ulterior motive, it would be easy for you to pick up on that. This is especially true if they mean you some harm, for our psychic senses are designed to help us protect ourselves as we move through life.

When I was awakening, I was really surprised to discover how frequently many people are secretive, insincere or downright dishonest. You might also regularly pick up on it if someone says they’re not mad at you when they really are, or they’re listening to you when in truth their minds are somewhere else. Someone who is being flooded with psychic input for the first time can naturally get confused if they are tuning in to what is really happening without conscious awareness that this is what they’re doing.

This is especially true when we deal with people lacking in self-awareness. For example, there are many people who have developed such a habit of fudging the truth, pretending to be cheerful, or putting on some other social mask that they don’t even realize they’re doing it. If you respond to what’s happening beneath the surface as opposed to what they’re presenting to the world, they may truly have no conscious idea what you’re talking about. Further, since most people will take them at face value, you will seem like the strange one. (However, I do believe that we all know what is real and true on some level – psychics are simply more conscious of this awareness. It’s this inner knowing that is usually the source of hunches and intuitions.)

It also sounds like you’re mixing up what’s happening in the present from what will happen in the future. You said that these perceptions repeat over and over again until the actual event happens in your outer experience. This is similar to mixing up what is happening on a deeper level from what is happening on the surface, only now, you’re tuning in to the future but you think it’s the present.

This could stem from the confusion of being suddenly flooded by lots of psychic input, but it could also happen because your inner being is trying to show you the validity of your psychic perceptions. By repeating over and over until what you’re anticipating actually happens, your psychic ability is validated.

As for discerning dark spirits from light, periods of sudden or intense psychic awakening can be very unsettling and stressful. When the foundation of what we believe to be reality begins to shift under our feet, it’s normal to question our sanity. It’s also normal to feel pretty freaked out sometimes and totally fascinated at others. As we emotionally swing from a high vibration to a low vibration and back again, we manifest a hodgepodge of all sorts of psychic experiences, some light and some dark.

Imagine that you’ve begun to explore a newly discovered continent. This is a place that few people have ever visited, and most of the landscape is a mystery. You’ve only read about others’ adventures in this territory, and some of those accounts described a strange, dangerous landscape, while others depicted a heavenly paradise.

Just as is true in the physical, both can exist in the same place. One area of the same city can be beautiful and rich with all sorts of wonderful attractions, while just a few blocks away there is suffering, crime and poverty. If you want to only meet the best sorts of people in any land, you must go to the best places and become a good judge of character.

In order to go to the best places when tuning in to other worlds, you have to come from a high vibration yourself. Like attracts like, so if you are of love and light, you will attract spirits of love and light. If you are free of fear and full of faith, and your intentions are pure and high-minded, you will naturally attract spirits of a similar nature. (I’ve written extensively on how to generate and maintain a high vibration in other articles.)

You can also use prayer to ask the Universe and your spirit guides to help you manifest the quality of experience you desire. This is why many people use prayers of protection or surround themselves with white light when they are communicating with spirits. In this way, they consciously align with a higher level of experience instead of taking whatever and whoever comes their way. This is akin to choosing where in a city you want to visit and who you want to talk to, as opposed to just wandering around, talking to any stranger you see on the street.

In order to sort out the true nature of the spirits you encounter, you must learn to trust the way you FEEL. This is the only way, for lower astral entities are known to be deceptive in what they say, but they can’t fake or hide their true essence. If the hair stands up on the back of your neck, your heart starts pounding, or you feel at all uneasy, your inner being is trying to warn you. By contrast, communicating with a spirit guide or any other well-intentioned entity is never frightening. Those experiences feel peaceful, loving, beautiful, empowering, uplifting and positive.

If you simply pray for Spirit to guide you, I know you can manifest greater understanding of your wonderful gifts!

Pregnancy and Spiritual Awakening

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I’ve read that when your first child was born, you were launched on a spiritual journey. I’m very curious about this. Would you mind sharing what it was about this child or about the birth process that led to awakening? I’m beginning training as a doula, and I’m excited to participate in the amazing changes that childbearing can bring. I would like to address this experience in my capacity as a childbirth educator. Many thanks!
– Kathe

Dear Kathe:

First I want to explain that everyone is in the process of spiritual awakening; most of us are just going about it so gradually that we don’t really notice it. To awaken spiritually is really just to expand in consciousness, which is a natural product of experience.

There are turning points, however, when we wake up to the truth that there is far more to life than what can be perceived with the five physical senses. This generally involves territory that we consider to be overtly “spiritual” in nature, such as having psychic experiences or being able to consciously manifest what we want in our lives. It is at this point that I think most people use the term spiritual awakening.

As this is such a profound transformational shift, it’s natural for it to affect a person on every level, and to change the very way they look at life or the nature of reality. This process can feel very messy, uncomfortable and out of control, but it can also feel fascinating and exciting.

We all go through natural growth cycles, and some even go so far as to say that these cycles last about seven years. (It’s interesting to note that this is also the amount of time that doctors say it takes for us to replace every cell in our bodies with new cells – so we literally become a new person every seven years.)

At the end of each cycle, we tend to grow restless and dissatisfied, which creates the desire to explore something new. We then go in search of whatever may be missing in our lives, choose what resonates with us, and devote ourselves to it. With time, we master it and may even teach it to others. Then it becomes so familiar that it no longer thrills us the way it used to, and before long, we’re restless again. At the beginning of each cycle of spiritual development, we awaken to new realizations, new possibilities, and new personal abilities.

This is the path of someone who gradually grows more interested in spiritual matters and begins to read books, take classes, and try things like meditation or yoga. These explorations then lead to other new interests or higher levels of practice and gradual spiritual growth. It’s a bit like awakening slowly on a weekend morning, remembering where you are, what happened yesterday, and what you are going to do today.

By contrast, a sudden awakening is like being startled by a thundering crash in the middle of the night, not knowing what’s happening, if you’re safe (and sane) or not, and what you should do next.

There are many things that can suddenly wake people up. Any sort of intense stress or loss can spark a spiritual awakening, including physical abuse or other trauma, childbirth, a near death experience, etc. The stress doesn’t have to be physical, however; often it’s a divorce, the death of a loved one, or a major career or business failure that launches an awakening.

Of course, not everyone who gives birth awakens, nor does everyone who goes through a divorce. It depends on how ready you are to wake up and how far beyond your comfort zone you are pushed. When our egos are stripped of their illusions of control and begin to crack under the strain of whatever is happening, that’s when divine light begins to pour in.

As for why pregnancy is so often a time of awakening for women, I have a few theories. First, pregnancy can be a very stressful, anxious time for many women, especially first-time mothers. Personally, I have never felt more vulnerable or out of control than when I was pregnant. Knowing that you have no choice but to surrender to pregnancy and childbirth could prove very unsettling for anyone with control issues.

Pregnant women are also literally channels to the spirit world, as they are bringing souls through to this world from the other side. This opens something of a portal to all sorts of intuitions and other spiritual phenomena, which can blow a woman’s mind open to all kinds of new possibilities.

Also, when a woman is carrying a highly spiritual child, it’s natural for the child to influence her own vibration. This is sort of like being in the presence of a guru non-stop for nine months. While I believe that most children have higher vibrations than their parents because we are all evolving, if a woman is carrying a very psychic or spiritual child, odds are good that at least during the pregnancy, her own vibration will rise, her psychic abilities will suddenly kick in, etc. This is largely what I attribute my own awakening to.

Pregnancy is also a time when many women cultivate a deeper sense of peace and love. They may take better care of themselves than ever before, and slow down to just “be” for the first time in their lives. They may begin to ponder life and where we all come from as they never have before. They may also feel very happy and grateful for the child they’ve conceived, and all of these will raise a woman’s vibration, which will naturally lead to higher spiritual experiences.

This brings me to the greatest reason I believe that pregnant women often experience spiritual awakening or the sudden development of new psychic powers. Pregnancy is one of the only times women have both a very high vibration and a very strong connection to a soul in the spirit world. Because their vibration is high, many pregnant women are able to consciously perceive signs and messages from the spirit of their unborn baby.

There are only a few times when spirits in the afterlife are super motivated to get through to us: when we’re in grave danger, when they’ve just crossed over, and just before they are to be born. When we’re in danger, much depends on how receptive we are. Often spirits are successful in warning us at such times simply because they try so very hard.

When they’ve just died, our vibration is usually very low with grief, so we can’t connect with them consciously even though they may be trying very hard to comfort us.

Just before a loved one in Spirit is to be born, however, our vibration is generally very high, which is ideal for spirit contact. Thus many women experience signs, messages, dreams, intuitions, etc., from the spirits of the babies they are carrying.

This is actually quite common, and much has been written about it. For more information, you might begin by exploring the work of Elisabeth Hallet at www.light-hearts.com. I also recommend Carol Bowman’s research.

May the love and care you give to new mothers and babies bring you many blessings!

Can She Help Grieving Mom Communicate with Departed Husband?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

My mom lost her second husband almost a year ago, and she is having a hard time with this. I’ve asked her to seek grief counseling, but she won’t do it. Last summer my stepfather came to me in a dream. This is not unusual – I’ve had many spirits come to me. In the dream, I was at the foot of my mom’s bed, talking to her as she cried over his death. He entered the room and I was so happy to see him. I said to him, “Ron help her! Help my mom!” He sat at her bedside and wrapped his arms around her. Then he turned to me and said, “I can’t. She won’t let me.” When I asked why I could perceive him and she couldn’t, he said it was because of her sadness. He then explained that he doesn’t understand such feelings, for they are no longer a part of him. He said he feels no sadness, regret, anger or grief – he only feels the love they still have. He wanted me to tell her he is with her every day. Every time I’m with my mom, she asks why she can’t feel him. I have no real answers for her aside from what he told me. Can I help her to be more open to him?
– Susan

Dear Susan:

This is mainly a problem of vibration. Sadly, it’s often the people who most long for contact with a loved one in Spirit who have the hardest time. This is because the emotions of grief are of a very low vibration, and in order to consciously connect with spirits, we have to reach high toward their vibratory range.

This is also why spirit contact is a relatively rare experience: when someone we love dies, we are grieving during the time when they are trying the hardest to connect with us. Once our grief has subsided, our loved ones know we’re okay and they move on. So what your stepfather told you in that dream is right on.

I’m betting your mom isn’t big on remembering her dreams, for if she was, she would have had a dream about your stepfather already. As you are very psychic, you have a naturally high vibration and ready access to your dreams. I’m sure your stepfather came to you because he’s been trying very hard to get through to your mom without success.

In order to connect while awake, we must have a high vibration, unmitigated desire, and the belief that this is possible. Then if we can stay open and trust what we perceive, it’s pretty simple to draw spirits close with feelings of our love for them.

Here are some suggestions for anyone who is grieving and longing for contact with a loved one in Spirit:

First you must give yourself some time to heal, for as you do, your vibration will naturally rise. When you are at peace with your loved one’s passing, you will be in a better position to purposefully connect with their spirit.

In the mean time, you can try for contact via your dreams. Of course, for this to work, you must be able to remember them, so begin to keep a dream journal and study various techniques for remembering and working with your dreams. Each night before you go to sleep, think of your loved one with affection and ask them to visit you while you’re dreaming. You can also ask your spirit guides and angels to facilitate this experience.

Ask yourself if you have any fear about the whole idea of spirit communication. Many people think they want this but deep down the idea of it unnerves them. That fear can both make us block our own success, and make our loved ones in Spirit hold back because they don’t want to scare us.

Further, ask yourself if there are any inner conflicts or issues you have yet to resolve about your relationship with the loved one in Spirit you are seeking. If you’re carrying any conscious or subconscious feelings of guilt, anger or any other lower emotion, those feelings can lower your vibration and prevent contact. For example, if you feel guilty because you weren’t there when your loved one crossed over, you could subconsciously “protect” yourself from facing your loved one until you resolve those feelings.

Beliefs are very important here. The more you expect to be able to connect with spirits, the more that will tend to happen. It is therefore wise to read about others’ success. It can also help to have someone else make contact. (For example, you might ask your stepfather to come to you in another dream and give you some information you could not have known. This evidence will both convince your mom that he’s really trying to come through, and show her that it’s possible to ask for a dream and have it happen.)

Understand that the spirit world is all around us, but it’s not tangible like this realm. If you expect to be able to perceive spirits with nothing but your physical senses, you will be disappointed. Some people even call the spirit world the “subtle realm.” Our thoughts and feelings already exist in this subtle realm, which means that spirits naturally come to us via thoughts and feelings. To manifest success with spirit communication, we must learn to trust that our thoughts and feelings about spirits are “real.”

When you feel you’re ready to make contact, turn on all your senses, sit quietly, and open up to a ny impressions you get. It’s rare that we sit quietly with all our senses turned on and then reach out to Spirit from a high vibration, and yet that’s all we really need to do.

As you reach out with your heart from a high vibration, watch for signs of your loved one’s presence. You may feel awash with love, sense their presence, have their face pop into your mind, hear their voice in your head, or have some memory you strongly associate with them seep through from the background of your mind. (For example, whenever my grandmother is near, I begin to notice memories of her house popping through from the background of my conscious awareness. These may be mental snapshots of the street she lived on or of rooms in her house.)

When something like this happens, let your heart swell with love for this person. Don’t focus on feelings of loss and how they aren’t here anymore, for that will bring your vibration down. Instead, remember happy memories. It may also help to physically smile, close your eyes, and turn your face upward, like you’re basking in the light of the sun. Breathe deeply and evenly, and send thoughts of love to this spirit. Tell them that you’re not afraid and ask them to draw near so you can psychically embrace them. This can lead to some very moving experiences.

Mind you, all of this is metaphysical, so it’s happening on an auric level. Sometimes you may feel things in your aura like tingling, or like someone is faintly stroking your hair. The hair may stand up on the back of your neck, or you may get goose bumps. Afterward, your head may still have some doubts, but your heart will know that something real has occurred.

In closing, while I applaud your desire to help your mom, we each have to find our own spiritual path through life, and there is only so much we can do for others. I want to reassure you that your mom is being guided and will heal in her own way and time.

Are Sexual Fantasies a Form of Psychic Harassment?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

In the past I engaged in astral sex: by focusing my energy on someone, I would have intense sexual experiences. This was amplified by the use of drugs, and now that I’ve quit using, I find I can still make these connections but in a far less powerful way. Now I want to discontinue doing this because it doesn’t feel right anymore. When I try to draw the line, however, I am discovering that just having an ordinary sexual fantasy about someone connects me to them in an energetic way. I’m starting to think it’s impossible to avoid having energetic experiences with other people. What do you think? I’ve also discovered I need to work on my relationship to the divine as it expresses itself in a feminine way. During the time when I was discovering sexual energy projection, I journeyed into disrespectful and degrading attitudes. I am working on changing that, and am seeking others’ forgiveness for my past behaviors.
– L.

Dear L.:

If the past behaviors you’re seeking forgiveness for are non-physical in nature (such as fantasies about other people), then you need do nothing but choose to think in new ways and forgive yourself. If it makes you feel better, you can mentally apologize to the people you feel you’ve wronged and ask them to forgive you. (To speak to them directly would probably really freak them out, which would do more harm than good.)

Regarding your current dilemma, you are absolutely right: it is impossible to avoid interacting energetically with others, for we are in constant energetic interaction with everyone around us. Every time we think of someone, we send them energy. In fact, even if you were to have a fantasy about some imaginary person, you would be interacting with a being in some dimension.

You can, however, resolve your worries telepathically. In becoming aware of auric exchanges, you are moving into some deep psychic territory, and you will have to develop some new psychic skills anyway. If you find yourself fantasizing about someone, and you’re not sure if this is okay, you can simply (mentally!) ask them for permission to continue. Think about it: if you can affect them with your sexual “fantasies,” surely you can also affect them with a soulful “fantasy” conversation.

Now let’s explore sex and spirituality and what a complicated subject this has become for us all. I believe we can tell a great deal about our relationship to life (and “God”) from our attitude toward sex. People who have yet to develop conscious spiritual awareness tend to be rather animalistic in their approach to sex. As we evolve spiritually, we seek physical release less and emotional union more. At first, we seek this union in another person; in time, however, we realize that what we really long for is union with the Divine.

There is a reason why highly spiritual people often turn to practices like celibacy and tantra. At first glance, these may seem totally unrelated, but such choices reflect awareness that sexual energy is powerful and can be harnessed toward spiritual aims.

Unfortunately, our evolutionary journey in relationship to sex is not simply a matter of how we express our desires. Because sex is so important and so powerful, mankind has developed all sorts of ways to try to control it, from harsh laws and religious edicts to the insidious psychological weapon of shame and social rejection. Depending on how we’ve been socialized, we all have various degrees of awakening and healing to accomplish regarding sexual energy. Most of us have been taught to believe that sex is dirty, sexual desire is wrong, and even our bodies are somehow shameful. Repression eventually becomes obsession, whether we’re obsessed with having sex or with NOT having it.

In backlash to all that control, many people now choose to believe that sex can be purely recreational – that we don’t have to exert any self-control so long as we practice good hygiene. Of course, this careless approach breeds all sorts of emotional, spiritual, social and economic issues.

As with anything else that brings us great pleasure, sex is also easy to get addicted to or obsessed with. This is when it begins to rule us and we surrender our freedom to choose wisely. If we can’t control our sexual thoughts and feelings in addition to our sexual acts, we can become addicted, and may become earthbound by our desires when we depart this world. This is why great spiritual teachers have warned us against lust: it’s not because sex is inherently evil, but because it is so enticing that it’s easy to lose our heads about it.

Like all energy, sexual energy can be directed and redirected, stored and released, but it can’t be destroyed. When it is repressed, it will seek some sort of outlet. The greater the tension between sexual energy and the forces trying to repress it, the more twisted it may become as it seeks an outlet for expression.

What you call “degrading” in your question others might call perverted, which simply means distorted or unnatural. Thus sex that is perverse or degrading involves the distortion of whatever would be natural for us if we didn’t have so many artificial ideas about it. This sort of perversion is now pervasive and self-perpetuating: it has become yet another thing we inherit from our cultures if we’re not conscious enough to choose something higher for ourselves.

Of course, conscious awareness is the key to making wise choices on any path. This involves knowing why we want what we want, why we do what we do, and how what we choose may affect other people. Without such awareness, we can’t purposefully cultivate the quality of experience we most value.

To have a healthy relationship to sexual energy, we must recognize it as a normal, natural, beautiful expression of life and love. We must also remain in control of our own thoughts and impulses, and carry the basic intention of loving ourselves and others.

You are at a natural turning point in your own evolution: you’re waking up to all the cultural issues you’ve absorbed about sex, and are in the process of making some new conscious choices for yourself. This is very positive, for it is only in aligning with the loving heart of sexual desire that we are freed from compulsion and empowered to manifest true fulfillment.

The simplest advice I can give you is just to LOVE: Cultivate loving thoughts, send loving energies, and choose whatever is most loving when you’re not sure what to do, and you can’t go wrong. If you are just sending love and appreciation to others and you end up in blissful sexual fantasies about them, then you are making love to the Universe, my friend – and there is nothing wrong with that!

Are Some People Incapable of Having Paranormal Experiences?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I have always been interested in the paranormal, but in my own life I have never encountered anything abnormal. (I’m now 66 years old.) Am I just dense or not sensitive enough? Sometimes I even doubt the existence of an afterlife. As Omar Khayyum once wrote, “Strange is it not, that of all those that before us have gone, not one returns to tell us of what lies beyond?”
– Dr. A.

Dear Dr. A:

Your interest in the paranormal is a good starting point, but it’s not enough to evoke a paranormal experience. For that, you need sincere yearning of the heart and soul and the ability to suspend disbelief. Are you willing to potentially believe something false – at least temporarily – if it means you make a new discovery?

The most important issue to ponder here is how the law of attraction comes into play. I believe we are all creating our own realities based on the thoughts we think, the things we give our attention to, what we believe and what we expect to happen. This means that people who “believe in” the paranormal will tend to create experiences that match their beliefs and expectations. Further, their own unique spin on such beliefs will influence how they experience the paranormal.

For example, two people may believe in the paranormal, with one tending toward fear of it and the other toward wonder and fascination. The first would probably manifest frightening experiences with earthbound spirits and demons, while the second may only encounter fairies and angels.

Similarly, people who don’t believe in such matters or who never think about them would probably never have any experience with them. In fact, if they approached the paranormal with disbelief or the desire to disprove something, they would tend to manifest experiences that fulfilled their negative expectations.

I vividly remember reading about psychic experiments in which this was actually proven. In these experiments, psychic tests were administered to people who had filled out questionnaires about their views on such matters. Those who believed in psychic ability performed statistically much better than chance on the tests, while those who disbelieved in psychic matters did statistically much worse than chance on the tests – which means they were actually USING their psychic ability to perform poorly!

Regarding the quote you offered about no one returning from the afterlife to tell us what it’s like on the other side, first, we all know that is just not how life is designed. It’s a bit like asking why, if love exists, it never stands up and announces its presence in some tangible way. (If you say that you are also skeptical about the existence of love, then it’s no wonder you’ve never had a spiritual experience, my friend!)

Second, people DO return from the other side and tell us what it’s like – in fact, they do it all the time! If you study the stories of near death experiencers, you’ll discover a very convincing body of evidence, for regardless of cultural backgrounds, religious beliefs, etc., there are definite patterns in these accounts of what happens when we die. Many NDE’ers were skeptics or atheists who woke up on the other side and realized that there really is a whole world beyond what we can perceive in the physical.

Of course, I don’t blame you for not believing if you haven’t had any reason to – heck, I was the same way. It’s a classic catch-22: until we have an amazing encounter with the supernatural, most of us remain closed to paranormal experiences.

Often the experience that first opens people up to such matters is a sign or visit from a departed loved one. This was the case with me: so many inexplicable things happened surrounding the death of my first love that I suddenly realized there was far more to life (and death) than I had ever considered. Even after that, however, it was not until I was pregnant with my first child that I awakened psychically. (Not much of paranormal interest happened in between).

As it would be foolish to summon an NDE or the death of a loved one in order to invite amazing experiences into our lives, spiritual practice/development is our best bet. You mentioned sensitivity, and you’re right: people who are highly sensitive tend to have lots of spiritual experiences because they are able to perceive more than the average person can. Some people seem to be born sensitive, but sensitivity can be cultivated. Getting internally quiet is one way to listen for subtle stimuli, which is why meditation is so central to spiritual development.

To begin to perceive more, we can also look at everything in a fresh way. Instead of focusing on objects, we might begin to focus on the so-called empty space around objects. Instead of listening to what someone is saying, we can begin to listen for what they are NOT saying. Instead of constantly chattering to ourselves in our own minds, we can begin to listen for our inner being (or another being) to speak to us within.

There is also a lot to be said for adopting an offbeat, creative approach to life. Not long ago, I met two very psychic friends for breakfast, and was struck by the fact that all three of us were eating with our left hands – we’re all left-handed! It’s no accident that many psychics and mystics are left-handed, for spiritual experience arises from the right brain. By thinking like a creative, offbeat leftie, you too may begin to see the world in a new way.

Besides, when we’re too scientific in our approach to the paranormal, it’s like trying to capture a rainbow in a jar. The “magic” in spiritual experiences arises from being in the right place at the right time and feeling intuitively inspired to pay attention at just the right moment. (Further, doubting the existence of the afterlife is like assuming that rainbows don’t exist because our jar is empty.)

A sense of open, childlike wonder can also be invaluable. All sorts of psychic experiments have proven that children are far better at learning psychic skills than adults, most likely because they don’t doubt they can succeed. If we can find the courage to live in a “fantasy world” where every idea that comes to us is as possible as any other, we stand a much better chance of manifesting extraordinary experiences.

Of course, going back to the law of attraction, the more we look for Spirit, the more we’ll find it. Like anyone else, I sometimes get caught up in mundane concerns, and during those times, I generally stop seeing auras and encountering spirits. Spiritual experiences come and go depending on my own focus and vibration.

Finally, try living on the edge: explore new places, new ideas, and new people. Set some big goals and take some risks. Living like this engages our survival instincts, which are intuitively-based.

Also, please note that I’m not trying to convince you or anyone else of anything, for I believe that people adopt whatever truth is best for them at that point in their lives. I just try to help folks following in my psychic footsteps to make sense of the strange things they are experiencing so they know they are neither crazy nor alone.

can tell you this: I have had so many mind-blowing experiences that I have absolutely no doubt that we continue on after death, and that there is a whole lot of magic beyond what we can see of the Universe. Like you, I once wondered and questioned, but now I know. I truly believe if you pray for amazing spiritual experiences with a sincere heart and begin to watch for signs, you too will be guided to profound new faith and understanding.

Discerning the Source and Quality of Psychic Perceptions

Dear Soul Arcanum:

How do you differentiate the voice in your head that sounds like you, and the voice of God? If you would be so kind as to help me figure this out, I would be very grateful. God Bless!
Jason

Dear Jason:

This is one of the trickiest and most important psychic processes to master, for the answers and insights we receive may come from a number of possible sources. At one end of the spectrum we have ideas we would not consider at all spiritual, such as the attachments, fears and delusions of the ego. At the other end, we have what you label the “voice of God,” which I would call spiritual guidance of the highest nature. In between, we have all sorts of impressions we might label “psychic,” which will vary in quality depending on their source.

These include but are not limited to our own intuition and instincts, information stored as energy in others’ auras, input from discarnate spirits of all sorts, the guidance of spirit guides and angels, and the wisdom of our own higher selves. I don’t think that I have ever heard the “voice of God” as you put it – my only clear personal experiences of God have been profound feelings of healing, peace and bliss – but this is probably a matter of semantics. I suppose I both believe that God (whatever God may be) does not converse with us about our temporal concerns, and at the same time, I believe in some way, every voice is the voice of God.

There are a number of ways to evaluate the psychic impressions you receive for their power and wisdom. The first thing to examine is the quality of your perceptions. Any ideas or impressions that are dark, fearful or discouraging are of a lower nature, and ideas, impressions or suggestions that are uplifting, encouraging, enlightening and healing are from a higher source. Guidance from a divine source just feels right. At the same time it often seems rather obvious, for at some level, we already know the truth – we just have a habit of slipping out of higher perspectives when we’re caught up in ego issues and mundane concerns.

Further, the results of processing and implementing the guidance received will clearly demonstrate its true nature, which will help you learn how to recognize higher wisdom in the future. When we are properly attuned and channeling healing energy or guidance of a higher nature, all involved will be uplifted and renewed. If anyone is drained, exhausted, depressed or discouraged, then something is amiss.

Also, if accurately interpreting and following the insights or advice given leads to anything but positive transformation, then the source of that advice is not of a higher nature. Divine wisdom will always direct us to act with love, integrity and respect for all involved.

If you approach the pursuit of spiritual guidance properly, you should have no problem aligning with a healing, enlightening source of wisdom. To put it simply, we will attune to information and guidance of a “higher” nature when we are in a high spiritual vibration, and we will attune to information of a lower spiritual nature when we are in a lower spiritual vibration. Often, this is referred to as either being centered in “spirit” or caught up in “ego.”

To align with top notch spiritual guidance, the first thing to do is determine your motivation for seeking it in the first place. When we are motivated by worldly or selfish concerns or the desire to impress others, we tend to be caught up in ego, and by now, hopefully you can predict what will happen as a result.

If our desire is to grow in spiritual wisdom and understanding, to help others and ourselves to move closer to God, or to make the world a better place to live in, we will align with higher wisdom. Basically, the more spiritual our desires/questions, the more spiritual the answers will be.

When I do readings, I always consciously shift into a very high vibration before asking for Spirit’s guidance, for this lifts me beyond the range and input of the ego. I do this via a ritual that I have developed and practiced for many years. Every good reader I know has some process designed to put them in the high vibratory state of “reading mode.”

In my own ritual, I light incense, put on some wonderful spiritual music, sit in meditation for a few minutes, and then say a special prayer. This prayer is not about the words, however – it is about the feelings/energies it evokes. During that prayer, I give thanks and affirm that the guidance that I am about to receive will be filled with the love, truth, wisdom and understanding of the highest. As I am saying these words either out loud or to myself, I am holding the person I am reading for in my heart, and I am surrounding them with divine love and envisioning them uplifted, empowered, healed and fulfilled.

This shift into a higher vibration causes a total transformation throughout my being. My body relaxes, my breathing slows, and the whole world suddenly seems brighter. I perceive life as a wonderful place of endless possibilities – a place where everything happens for an ultimately beneficial reason. When I have completed this shift, which generally only takes me about five minutes, I am in a state of deep peace and bliss.

Once I am in this high vibration, everything just flows. I truly believe that anyone who can get into this state of consciousness can tap into enlightening spiritual guidance, for at this level of being and awareness, one has only to ask a question to receive an answer.

It is far easier and more natural for some people to shift into a high vibration like this than others, based simply on their everyday habits. If we make a habit of seeking spiritual growth on a daily basis, if we constantly cultivate a high vibration in everything we think, say and do, it is easy to make such a shift.

Further, by living a spiritual life in general, we lift ourselves above the tricks of the ego and the influence of lower spiritual entities, and align our hearts and minds with the divine. Some positive habits to adopt include eating a fresh, whole food diet and taking good care of our physical bodies, practicing kindness and compassion, studying spiritual teachings, and regularly engaging in spiritual practices like meditation. When we take a spiritual approach to all aspects of our everyday lives, we make it easy for the divine to communicate with us on a conscious level.

There is one more quality that is essential to aligning with divine guidance, and that is what we may call positive belief or faith. It is of course first essential to believe that it is POSSIBLE to access divine guidance – otherwise we are closed off from that experience. Beyond this basic belief, spiritual faith plays a powerful role.

Many psychics can get into the high vibration they need to read for other people, but they can’t read for themselves because their own wishful thinking clouds their view. In order to be objective about our own lives and concerns, we must have faith in a higher plan, for that will allow us to relax our attachment to any particular outcome. When we trust that everything will work out fine one way or another, it is naturally easier to hear the truth.

Before you do anything with the advice I offer above, I recommend you simply pray to always receive spiritual guidance of the highest nature. Meditate daily with this desire in your heart, and ask Spirit to help you fulfill it. This may sound too simple to really work, but in my experience, nothing has proven more powerful than a heartfelt request for spiritual guidance.

What’s the Difference Between Being Intuitive and Officially Psychic?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I often have feelings about things that prove true. For example, I will sense it when someone is lying to me, or the other day, I had a bad feeling as I started out on my usual route to work, and I ended up stuck in a traffic jam. Would you say that I’m psychic? If not, what’s the difference between being intuitive like me, and being officially “psychic?” Thanks!
– Sue

Dear Sue:

I would probably use the same label you do and call you “highly intuitive.” By this I mean that you have a lot of natural psychic ability, and are receiving a lot of psychic information. To be officially “psychic,” all you have to do is trust your intuitions enough to act on them. (Mind you, these are all abstract labels; there is no hard line where someone becomes officially “psychic” any more than there is a hard line where someone becomes officially “beautiful,” “intelligent” or “artistic.”)

Where you may have a vague feeling that road trouble lies ahead and then discover (the hard way) that your feeling was right, a psychic will put that feeling to good use and take another route!

Let’s work with your driving example, since this is something we can all relate to. I get a lot of intuitive guidance when driving myself. Just last week I got on the highway to head across town and run some errands, and soon I came to a point where I could take one of two routes. I usually take what I’ll call “route B,” but as I approached this split, I heard in my mind, “Take route A.”

Now, years ago when I was just developing psychically, I may not have been able to specify that I “heard this in my head.” I may have said I just “knew” that I should take the other way, and I probably wouldn’t have done it.

Many people have experiences like this all the time. They “just know” that they should take a different route, or they have a feeling that they should stop and get gas now instead of waiting until later, or they “sense” that something or other is going to happen, but the feeling is so vague or “improbable” that they choose to brush it off. Then later, something happens to confirm that they should have “listened to their intuition.” What they do at THIS point determines whether they will continue to remain highly intuitive or start to develop into someone we could officially label “psychic.”

Anyway, in my case, when I heard “Take A,” I woke up and dialogued with whatever was telling me this. I don’t know where this information came from. I did not perceive an angel sitting next to me in the car, or a spirit guide speaking through the radio, or the presence of any other being. It was just a voice in my own mind, so one could say that I was “talking this over with myself.”

I basically asked, “Did I hear that right? I should take Route A?” I then heard in reply, “Yes, take A!” I then mentally said, “Okay, I will take A, but I would really like evidence later down the road to verify this decision. I hate it when I listen to my intuition and then I never get to witness the wisdom of doing so!”

I quickly changed lanes and took the other route, and sure enough, just as I approached my exit, I saw signs stating that due to bridge construction, the very ramp I would have needed to take if I had gone my usual route was closed. Further, there was a big traffic backup due to this construction, which began just where I was getting off the highway, so I was not inconvenienced at all.

At this point, many people might start to question the whole experience. They might reason with themselves that this was perhaps just a coincidence, or they might smile, shrug, and say, “Wow, that was weird,” and then forget about it and come back to “reality.”

I, however, paused and gave THANKS to that voice – whatever it was and wherever it came from. I took a few moments to relish the feeling of being blessed and guided, and I affirmed once again that I am indeed psychic.

I also reviewed how this information came to me so that the next time it happens, I will recognize it for what it is. (Of course, I knew to listen to it this time because I had received similar guidance in the past, and done the same review at that time.)

Above I mentioned something that is worth exploring further. To progress from being intuitive to psychic, we must be willing to take some leaps of faith – to act on our intuition even when we have no logical reason to do so, and even if we never receive evidence that it was a prudent thing to do.

For example, if we have a feeling that we should stay home some night and we listen to it and nothing happens, we may never know what COULD have happened if we hadn’t listened to our intuition. This is the whole point! Our intuition is protecting us from something bad happening, so it’s a good thing if nothing happens.

Further, the more we listen to the “little nudges” that come to us, the more we will build trust in this source of guidance, and the better it will work for us. Our daily lives can then become much easier and smoother thanks to all the intuitive guidance we receive.

Please note that my own psychic radar ebbs and flows depending on lots of different factors, many of which I’m sure I’m not aware of. If I’m in denial or illusion about anything personally, for example, I will probably block my own inner guidance simply because I don’t want to see the truth. If I’m exhausted, caught up in negative emotion, stressed out, etc., it will wane. By contrast, when I’m relaxed, happy, on top of my life and issues, feeling fine, etc., it will blossom again. I’m sure that planetary/astrological energies affect our intuition too, as do the natural cycles our bodies go through.

Below are some of the intuitions that came to me on a day I was really psychically on. There were far more than I could list here, and there were probably far more that I experienced that I didn’t consciously note or remember. (You have many like that too!) Here are a few:

  • When I woke up, it came to me that “someone would come to the door” that morning, so I had better be dressed appropriately. Sure enough, a little while later, a tradesman unexpectedly knocked at the door at an unusual hour.
  • I had a feeling that I need not race to get the phone, as it would not be for me, and later when I checked the caller i.d., this was confirmed.
  • I had a feeling I was forgetting some appointment or obligation, so I went back through my “sent emails” file, and sure enough, I had failed to put a reading on my written schedule.
  • I had a feeling that a package would be delivered in the afternoon that would require a signature, and that I should thus make sure I was home at that time, and this happened.
  • Throughout the day, I often had people pop into my head, and when I then checked my email, I had just received emails from those people.
  • I have been looking for a local resource for a project I want to get going, and I had a feeling that I should look in a certain publication. I opened that publication, flipped through it, and went directly to a page where I found what I was looking for.
  • I had a feeling my son was not being completely honest about his homework situation, so I told him I would be checking with his teachers, at which point he decided to confess the rest of the story.
  • I had a feeling that I shouldn’t email my real estate agent about a certain concern yet, and sure enough, within an hour that concern was cleared up – by the guy who came to the door early in the morning!

I’m out of space here, but I could go on and on. Anyone can learn to turn their intuitions into useful psychic guidance like this, and I highly recommend it, for it can help us choose routes that lead where we want to go, and smooth out paths that may otherwise prove rocky and frustrating.

Is It Harder to Communicate with the Spirits of Suicides?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

Last September my husband took his own life. I am spiritually evolved in many ways, but have questioned my beliefs about death since the day he died. I have been able to communicate with souls that have passed over for family members here, such as my husband’s grandfather, but I’m not sure if I’ve been able to reach my husband because I wonder if I want so badly to have him with me that I’m imagining things. What do you think? Also, how does suicide affect spirit communication? I’m unsure what I believe anymore. Thank you very much for your time. Namaste!
– Chelle

Dear Chelle:

My heart goes out to you. I can only imagine how hard it must be to heal from a loss of this nature. Before I explore general ideas, I want to tell you that I feel that your husband is trying hard to connect with you, and it is only your own pain and doubt that is keeping these experiences from being more real and fulfilling for you.

As I’ve explained a number of times, having a strong desire to connect with a certain spirit is very powerful, but if we pressure ourselves to produce, it may just hinder us. This is why I may bring through great evidence from spirits for strangers, but will have a harder time bringing through loved ones for people I know. When I feel I “must” succeed, I know I tend to stretch for evidential details more, which causes me to question everything I perceive more stringently. I also expect more of myself and my own loved ones in Spirit than I do of strangers, and this bogs the whole spirit communication process down.

It can be very confusing, disappointing, and even disillusioning to receive clear, evidential communication from a casual acquaintance in Spirit, and not be able to connect with your own spouse, parent or child. In such cases, however, we are almost always the source of whatever is preventing successful interaction. Our vibration may be too low due to grief, we may be too invested in making a connection, or we may doubt everything we perceive both because messages from those we were very close to tend to be more subtle, and because we know we are prone to wishful thinking.

While most people who are grieving tend to see even the smallest coincidences as signs from a loved one in Spirit, lots of us go too far the other way, and refuse to accept as valid anything less than a full blown miracle. We must remember that EVERYTHING we experience in life is ultimately a result of “wishful thinking,” and trust the power of our desire as much as we do the discernment of our intellects.

In light of all of this, I encourage you to trust that the experiences you’re having are real and valid. By trusting them, you will be able to cultivate clearer, more validating experiences with your husband, who probably just wants you to understand why he did what he did and forgive him.

As for suicides in general, and how this act may affect spirit communication, it all depends on that person’s motivation for taking their own life, for that will greatly affect where they end up on the other side. If you think about it, there are what we might call “degrees” of suicide.

For example, it seems to me that a soldier who throws himself on a grenade to save his comrades is way ahead of your average American couch potato, who is slowly killing himself with junk food, inactivity and cigarettes. The first man is demonstrating great reverence for the gift of life by sacrificing himself in order that a number of others may go on living, while the second man is demonstrating a profound lack of appreciation for his physical existence. Given all the “suicide” possibilities we might imagine in between, it’s easy to see how each individual’s motivations would greatly affect what happens when they get to the afterlife.

Further, when we cross over, how we have lived will be far more important than how we have died. A person’s general nature will greatly affect their ability to reach through from Spirit, regardless of how they passed. Someone who was highly conscious, intelligent, sane, positive, grateful, kind and spiritual in life will tend to be easy to communicate with on the other side. It’s like we each carry our own torch into the afterlife in the form of our spirits. If we are radiant with light, we can see far and are empowered to do much more than if we are stumbling through darkness.

People who were unconscious, ignorant, insane, negative, ungrateful, selfish, and cynical or disbelieving while alive will be much harder to communicate with when they cross into Spirit, as they will be in dark, murky territory. If their lights are very dim, they can’t see to do much. Some even reincarnate without regaining consciousness in the afterlife.

As we continue on in death much as we were in life, two of the most rewarding and powerful traits we can cultivate are a strong, positive belief in Spirit and knowledge of spiritual principles. The more we focus upon and center our lives on higher spiritual values, the lighter and freer we’ll be in the spirit realm.

Now, when most of us hear the word suicide, we don’t think of military heroes or couch potatoes, of course: we think of someone who was of sound body and mind who became depressed and lost hope of ever turning their lives around. As these people were in mental and emotional hell while living, they tend to continue to be in mental and emotional hell when they cross over. Contrary to some religious teachings, this suffering is not a punishment, but arises from natural spiritual law. It is no more imposed upon them than the hell they created for themselves while alive.

These sorts of spirits tend to be as hard to get through to in the afterlife as they were when they were living, at least until they attain a higher state of mind. Such spirits often become earthbound, and continue to wander in the inner darkness and confusion that led them to take their lives in the first place. The lessons they were supposed to learn while living are still on their metaphorical “to-do” lists, but they have no clear way to complete those tasks, and thus we might say they have “unfinished business.” They do not remain like this forever, of course. When they realize how precious life is, they begin to “see the light.”

It takes a lot of focus and energy for any spirit to communicate inter-dimensionally. While it does happen, someone who couldn’t summon the will to live is unlikely to pull that sort of personal power together. Sometimes, however, suicides are shocked to find they still exist, and realize that killing themselves just made things worse. They may then want nothing more than to tell us they are sorry and urge us not to follow in their footsteps. When they witness how much pain they’ve caused those they love, they may be overwhelmed with remorse, and go to great lengths to seek forgiveness. As we pray for them and send them love, we bathe them in light, which can help them quickly rise in vibration and understanding, and move on to higher planes.

Again, I feel that your husband is not lost on the other side, but is definitely trying to reach you. Keep praying for him and visualize him being flooded by divine light. It will help him to heal, which will empower him to connect with you in a more fulfilling way. I know it’s hard and you have your own healing to work through, but try to have compassion for how much he must have been suffering to take his own life, and offer him your forgiveness if you can.

I’m sending you prayers for love and healing, my friend.
