Divorce Sparks Intuitive Awakening

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I think that someone has cast a witchcraft spell on me and my children, and feel it may be my estranged husband or his lover. Yesterday I suddenly felt a cold unlike anything I’ve ever felt before. Our home is warm and there was no reason for this extreme coldness. My husband came over about 20 minutes after this, and this feeling came over me. There was then tension and disruption from my son, who had been perfectly sweet for weeks until then. Tonight when my husband arrived, the same coldness came over me, and tension filled the air. He is a very angry, selfish person, and I wonder if he might have a dark entity or dark spirit attached to him. Before I found out about his affair, I had a vivid dream of tiny gremlins running up my bed onto my hand and trying to pull my wedding ring off. I wrestled with them in my dream, and it was so vivid that I awoke holding onto my hand, covering my rings and crying for help. About a year later, I felt a soft energy leave my ring one day, and it felt like the blessings that had been placed on the ring on our wedding day were evaporating. I actually felt the energy of our vows go from the ring. What do you make of all of this?
– Soul Arcanum

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I found what you wrote about your wedding ring to be really interesting, for it reminded me of an amazing experience I had years ago when my own marriage was unraveling. At the time of this event, I was sitting in a college class, thinking deeply about my marriage. Silently, I asked God if my marriage would or could make it, and at that moment, I felt drawn to look down at my rings. To my surprise, I saw that one of the main emeralds in my engagement ring was missing; the setting was empty in that spot.

I thought this was the sign I was looking for, but I wasn’t totally convinced. I couldn’t remember the last time I had really looked at my rings, so I told myself that this stone could have been missing for a while. When I got home that night, I gave the engagement ring to my husband to take to the jeweler, so I was only wearing my wedding band after this.

While in that same class the following week, I remembered what had happened, and I decided to ask the same question again in hopes of receiving another sign. I never expected it to come to me through my rings again, so I spent a number of minutes looking around and listening to people in the class for a sign before I noticed that my wedding band was split in two. It remained on my finger without a problem, but when I really looked at it, I saw that there was a crack completely through it on one side. I knew this was new because I had just carefully examined my rings when I discovered the emerald missing. This convinced me! As you have probably surmised, the marriage didn’t make it, but it’s now ten years later and I’m very happily remarried, so it all worked out.

I think this story illustrates not only how asking for a sign can yield amazing results, but also how objects like wedding rings can and do hold energy. We imbue them with that energy when we bless and consecrate them as symbols of something we hold sacred, and they can reflect what they represent in some amazing ways. So I don’t doubt that you did indeed feel the energy of your vows evaporating from your ring that day.

I also found your dream about the gremlins fascinating, and I see two possible interpretations here. First, the dream may have been a literal reflection of something happening in the astral. In other words, maybe there really were astral entities at work in this situation, perhaps stirring up lust in your husband (his weak spot), and thus damaging your marriage. However, it’s also possible that your own inner being was trying to warn you about what was going on, and because you didn’t want to face the truth, it gave you this gremlin metaphor to try to warn you that something was tearing your marriage apart.

As for the other things you’re sensing, I have to say that it’s normal for there to be psychic/emotional tension when people are divorcing, and it’s common for kids to act out in response to that tension and their own emotional turmoil. At the same time, however, it’s clear that you are highly psychically sensitive.

Because you are so sensitive, you will be affected by everyday emotional tension more than most people, but you’ll also pick up on subtle energies and intuitive warnings. Further, there doesn’t have to be an overt spell cast on you for you to experience the things you’ve described. Some of these sensations are your intuition trying to tell you things to help you, and one of those things may indeed be that someone is sending ill will your way. We may experience this as cold, pain or tingling, or we may find that person frequently pops into our minds for no apparent reason.

It’s also highly possible that your ex does have a negative entity attached to him, which can also feel like the coldest cold. Many people have negative entities attached to them and never realize it. Certainly anyone who is in emotional turmoil or lacks emotional control is a prime candidate, as is anyone who is really “angry and selfish.” Negative emotions like stress, rage, grief, and jealousy make us vulnerable to attachment and big targets for these entities, so people who are going through divorce, grieving, or suffering any other major life crisis often struggle with lower astral entities.

It’s wise to make peace with everyone in our lives for lots of reasons, and the potential for psychic attack is a big one. When we harbor anger or resentment for others, we damage our own happiness, drain our own energy, and waste our time wishing others ill when we could be out fulfilling our dreams. At the same time, when people harbor resentment toward US, if we are not consciously cultivating well-being, it can affect us. (It will affect them adversely even more in the long run, but often people who are really ticked off don’t care as long as they get revenge.)

Besides, most people have no idea that by brooding over something that someone said or did, they are sending that person negative energy and potentially harming that person as well as themselves. (Remember: we get what we give, and whatever we focus upon expands in our lives.) Heck, most people don’t seem to realize that they can have control over their own thoughts and feelings – they think they just happen to them.

In light of all of this, I recommend you let go of the idea that a spell has been cast on you, and cultivate well-being in the following ways:

1) Thank your intuition and learn to work with it and trust it. You are highly psychic, and are receiving lots of warnings, information and insights designed to help you.

2) Make peace with your ex-husband and his mistress. Assume that they deserve each other, and that you must deserve better. I’d look upon this as a blessing, for you’ve been set free from marriage to a mean, selfish man, and can now move on to new and higher love.

3) Wish everyone well. Love yourself and take good care of yourself and your children. Wish your ex, his new lover, and everyone you know all the blessings you desire for yourself. Cultivate love, peace, good will and happiness. Then even if others try to send cold shadows to disturb you, your bright inner light will keep those shadows at bay.

Questions About Sensing Departed Loved Ones

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

Since I was 16, I have felt the presence of dead relatives around me. Mainly I feel my grandmother who died when I was four, though I also sense a step-uncle and my grandfather now and then. I don’t see them or hear their voices, I just feel their energy as a sudden awareness. This tends to happen when I’m stressed, when I’m driving, or when I’m at family functions. During these moments, I sometimes feel a light touch on my skin, my body will tingle, and I’ll feel warmth and love coming from them. They also communicate with me through music. A certain song on the radio will trigger thoughts of them, or I will unknowingly mention them in normal conversation on a special birthday or the anniversary of their death. They do sometimes come to me in dreams, but I can only recall bits and pieces of the dream content.

Is this really happening, or is it just my imagination? If I am indeed sensing the presence of departed family members, why do I only sense some and not others? Also, why do they come to me instead of other family members?
– L.

Dear L.:

Thanks for this opportunity to explore some of the finer points of spirit communication. The ways you describe sensing the presence of loved ones in Spirit are all valid, common ways that spirits reach out to us. I have no doubt that this is NOT your imagination, especially since it seems to happen when you least expect it.

These spirits come to you when you’re stressed because they want to comfort you in a time of need. You sense them when you’re driving because you’re in an altered state of consciousness. Many people have enhanced psychic awareness when they’re driving because they’re able to let their minds wander and they don’t have anything else to focus on or do.

Being in this state and having the radio on also tends to encourage messages through songs. You’re closer to spirits in vibration because you’re in a trance, so you’re more likely to recognize the sign and perceive the energies and messages they’re trying to send you.

Finally, spirits come to you when you’re at family functions because they’re there anyway. When our families get together, our loved ones in Spirit often gather around. Of course, it could also be that they are coming to you at those times because they are hoping you will deliver a message to another member of the family.

The tingling feelings you feel are these spirits touching your aura. Even the touches on your skin are most likely touches on your astral or etheric body, for it takes a great deal of energy for non-physical beings to affect the physical. Anyone who is highly psychically sensitive like you are can perceive auric interactions like this, and many mistake them for physical sensations.

For example, if you sense someone is looking at you, it’s because you sensed their energy connecting with your aura. If you have an immediate sense of attraction or dislike for someone, it’s because you’re consciously aware of how your aura is interacting with their energy. Everyone experiences this sort of thing – most people just don’t do it consciously.

Your mentioning loved ones in conversation brings up an interesting point. Spirit communication is subtle by nature, and we must remember that our thoughts come from somewhere. If a loved one suddenly pops into your mind for no apparent reason, odds are good that there is either some trigger you’ve overlooked in your environment or your loved one is near.

For example, I often have the experience of suddenly realizing that some particular image or memory is playing through my mind. When my grandmother is near, I may suddenly realize that I’ve had a picture of her house sitting to one side of the rest of my normal thoughts. When I finally notice it, I know to stop and open up my full awareness to her.

As for why some spirits reach out to you while others don’t, this is also a very common experience. For example, my first love died at the age of 18, and while I did have contact with him a number of times, when I was receiving messages from others or dreaming of spirits, I was often surprised and disappointed by how other spirits came through instead of him.

In fact, some of my earliest messages from Spirit came from a girl I had gone to high school with who died in a car accident after we graduated. We had run in the same social circle but never been really close. I had done her a favor that she greatly appreciated, however, and apparently, she was still grateful to me when she reached the other side, for she came through a couple of times with words of comfort and guidance.

Similarly, I barely knew my Uncle Rusty, for he lived across the country from me, yet when I was developing my mediumship abilities, he popped in regularly. Unexpectedly, he proved to be an amazing spirit guide for me for a number of years after he crossed over.

Through this and other experiences, I learned that when we want too badly to connect with a certain spirit, we can block our awareness of that particular loved one. If when we think of someone, we feel sad or desperate to hear from them, negative emotions will lower our vibration and prevent us from consciously connecting with them. So ironically, it’s easier to connect with someone we liked than with someone we deeply loved.

Also, our relationships while living often don’t reflect our true spiritual bond. We may not be very close to someone in this life, but it’s possible we were very close to them in other lifetimes and have a very deep spiritual bond with them. For this reason, some spirits come through with a surprising degree of love and devotion for us after they cross over.

Also, I was very close to both of my grandparents, but it has always been much easier to connect with my grandmother than my grandfather. My grandfather also comes through very differently from my grandmother. I now understand that this is not so much about our relationships as it is about these particular individuals.

Basically, they come through in ways that are like them. My grandfather was very into nature and spent every moment he could working in the garden or the yard. He was also a gifted gynecologist who adored babies and children. It shouldn’t surprise me that the times I have connected with him, I have either been absorbed in nature or someone in the family has been pregnant with one of his great-grandchildren. Similarly, my grandmother was very spiritual and peaceful, and when I’m feeling that way myself, she comes right through.

As for why they are coming to you more than other members of the family, it’s either because they are strongly connected to you or because you’re the one who can perceive them. Certainly, if you can perceive spirits and those around you can’t, you will often find yourself in the position of community channel.

You’re clearly highly clairsentient – that’s why you sense the presence of spirits the way you do. If you develop some of your other psychic abilities, like clairaudience, then whenever you sense a spirit, you can mentally dialogue with them. This will empower you to receive wonderful messages of wisdom and comfort not only for yourself, but also for friends and family who aren’t blessed with your psychic gifts.

Spiritual Effects of Marijuana

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

People say that marijuana can lead to enlightening experiences, but I don’t think that’s the case. From my experience, it just seems like it messes up the senses and causes a lot of confusion. When I smoked it, my mind was separated from the physical world and I felt oblivious to what was happening around me. Am I validated in feeling this way? What are the spiritual effects of smoking marijuana?
– Ned

Dear Ned:

Please note that this article in no way encourages illegal activity of any kind; it’s purely a philosophical discussion.

The spiritual effects of marijuana use depend entirely on who you are, where you are in your journey, and your intention in using it. Drugs aside, people should be psychologically stable and healthy before exploring altered states of consciousness.

Most of our beliefs about illicit drugs stem from social conditioning and our observations of people who abuse them in order to avoid reality. When people who aren’t stable and competent in everyday life take recreational drugs, it’s like watching someone who just learned to drive climb into the cockpit of an airplane. By contrast, people who are ready for it and have a clear sense of where they want to go can fly to new dimensions of spiritual experience by employing various sacred tools and practices.

Many sincere seekers who embrace marijuana as a sacrament find it spiritually beneficial. Further, many times when people use marijuana for the first time, it opens them up to a whole new realm of possibilities because getting high focuses their attention inward, toward the realm of spirit. Pot alters our state of consciousness and increases alpha brain waves much like meditation and other trance work. In terms of its effects on the aura, it can create a lovely green color and open the heart chakra. So you’re right in saying that it loosens your awareness of the physical world, but isn’t that one aim of spiritual practice?

Perhaps the most dramatic spiritual effect of marijuana use can be seen in people who are strongly rooted in physical, rational, left-brain thinking. From birth we are programmed with what and how to think, which can become a mental straight jacket that prevents us from moving beyond ordinary levels of wisdom, consciousness and spiritual experience.

Through altered states of consciousness, we can escape from that mental conditioning and expand the scope of our inner horizons. When we get high, we often experience higher levels of love, peace and awareness. Before we experience something, we don’t even know that it’s possible, but after we’ve done it at least once, it’s easier to find our way back to it without aid of outside influences.

So just trying marijuana can awaken people who are uptight with social conditioning to new spiritual possibilities. Further, when their existing beliefs are shattered, they hopefully learn to question everything else they’ve assumed to be true, possible, right, good, etc. This blesses them with an open mind, which fosters further personal and spiritual growth.

Marijuana can also turn on parts of the brain that have remained dormant and free our consciousness to wander into new psychic territory. According to at least one very involved study, using marijuana can profoundly increase a person’s chances of having an out of body experience. Marijuana users are also far more likely to report experiences of ESP, telepathy, precognition, clairvoyance and other psychic phenomena. In lab experiments, regular marijuana users have also scored significantly higher on psychic tests than non-users.

Similar studies have found a negative correlation between ESP scoring and alcohol use, and scientists have noted that marijuana affects the brain differently from drugs like alcohol, nicotine and cocaine. For example, marijuana seems to generate the growth of new brain cells and stimulate brain cells in ways that combat depression and other mood disorders, where the other drugs have an opposite effect.

Marijuana users also frequently report spiritual experiences, such as feeling connected to All That Is; contact with Divine beings like spirits, angels and guides; a deep sense of peace and contentment; a shift in their values away from materialism toward more spiritual interests and concerns, etc. Just meeting spiritual beings or having an out of body experience can spiritually transform people by opening them up to all sorts of new possibilities, allowing them to shed limiting fears, and launching them on a quest for new wisdom and experience.

Further, the term “to get high” accurately reflects marijuana’s spiritual effects. When most people smoke marijuana, they get fully present in the moment, drop all emotional resistance and sink into a wonderful state of appreciation. As a result, their vibration skyrockets. When our vibration is soaring, we’re more open to life and other people, which facilitates greater psychic and spiritual awareness. (Those who feel paranoid on marijuana should definitely avoid it, and might view this as a sign that they have a lot of repressed fears to be healed and released.)

Since marijuana doesn’t lower our vibration and it isn’t addictive, we don’t have to worry about lower astral entities as we do with other substances like alcohol. In fact, smudging with marijuana can dispel dark energies and cleanse the psychic atmosphere like sage does, for its energetic tone resonates with purification, liberation, peace and love.

All of this aside, please understand that I am just explaining why marijuana may have spiritually beneficial effects on some people. I am not in any way trying to convince you to change your mind about what is best for you personally, nor am I advocating the use of mind altering drugs for spiritual growth. Scientists have learned that the body produces its own psychedelic chemicals, so when we ingest a mind altering drug, we’re not introducing anything truly foreign into our bodies. This means we don’t NEED things like marijuana in order to attain the states of consciousness they induce.

I also believe that there is a point early on in every conscious spiritual journey when the use of mind altering substances becomes more limiting than beneficial. We might equate this with becoming an astronaut: when you can soar into the cosmos in a rocket, climbing into the cockpit of that airplane I mentioned earlier will prevent you from going as far and as high as you could without it.

Marijuana has been used as a spiritual tool for ages, and like any other tool, it can be used for destructive or constructive purposes. If spiritual seekers take a wise, mature approach, using marijuana may expand their consciousness and help them tap new psychic ability.

Anti-Depressants and Psychic Ability

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I was diagnosed with PTSD and Major Depression as well as Anxiety. I have read that taking medications will block your intuition and cloud your psychic ability. Since I don’t want that to happen, I no longer take any medications. I have also read that anxiety and depression are common in psychics and clairvoyants. Am I truly dampening my abilities if I take medication to treat the symptoms of depression and anxiety? I am blessed with special gifts that I want to further develop so I can continue to use them for the good of all, but sometimes I feel like if I don’t take medication to treat the symptoms of anxiety and depression, I’m not taking care of myself. If anxiety and depression are indeed common in psychics and clairvoyants, then what methods can I use to naturally treat them so as not to muddy my abilities? – Kim

Dear Kim:

I find it interesting that you’re focused on the relationship between medication and your psychic senses, and not the relationship between depression and your psychic abilities.

There is definitely a connection between depression and new spiritual growth or awakening. Major depression pushes us to ask some very deep questions about the meaning and purpose of life. Ultimately, emotional suffering forces us to reach for new spiritual understanding, which leads us to break down the ego in search of our true nature so we can connect with our spiritual source. The more we fear or resist this process, the harder this journey of personal transformation will seem.

Of course, simply asking these sorts of questions can unleash all sorts of repressed issues and energies on a soul level. Repressed anger, guilt and fear from this life and other lives may then cause depression until those energies are made conscious and healed.

Psychic development alone can cause depression for a number of reasons. For one thing, psychics are highly sensitive and can pick up other people’s feelings or tap into global psychic currents without realizing it. They may feel depressed when in fact they are just tuning in to someone else’s misery. Since they are psychically open, they may also be drained of energy by other people or astral entities.

Like depression, anxiety can also be picked up from other people or the atmosphere. Just being too psychically open can make us feel anxious, for our inner being will try to tell us that we are vulnerable to psychic influence by outside forces.

Given all of the above, further spiritual development is often the cure for depression. With wisdom and experience, psychics naturally gain more awareness of all that is affecting them on a subtle level. They also learn how to channel spiritual guidance and healing, how to control their own psychic boundaries, and how to set their own vibrational tone. When they learn about the law of attraction, they realize that they create their own realities, which frees them of the hopelessness and despair that drive depression. By accepting that we have created our own dis-comfort and dis-ease, we reclaim our personal power to create new well-being instead.

As I see it, there are two equally valid sides of this medication issue: on one hand, it would be great if you could trust that everything you experience has an ultimately positive aim so you can seek the deeper messages behind your depression and heal it on a causal level. If you can look at this as a process of spiritual rebirth and trust that though it may be uncomfortable, it is taking you somewhere positive, you won’t abort your spiritual journey or miss out on its blessings. (If medication makes you feel good, and that erases your motivation to reach for new understanding, you could cut short your own spiritual growth.)

On the other hand, anything you can do to raise your vibration (including taking medication) will empower you to create further positive change, and will facilitate psychic awareness of a higher order. If you tune in psychically from a position of depression, what you experience will tend to be very dark and heavy. If you can raise your vibration, you can connect with a higher level of spiritual experience, wisdom and healing.

Depression doesn’t always have deep spiritual meaning. Our modern lifestyle alone can cause anxiety and malaise; in fact, I believe that most depression could be cured by simply eating a high vibration diet of fresh natural foods and getting daily exercise, so this is definitely where I would start. Since it takes a lot of energy and willpower to break long-term patterns and create positive change, medication can help people through the challenging period when they’re in the process of developing healthy new habits.

The important thing is for YOU to decide what you really want and need. Given the severity of your suffering, I think healing the depression is more important than your psychic abilities right now. Besides, once you find a way to feel strong and empowered in yourself, you will be better able to successfully work with your psychic senses.

As for natural methods for healing depression, the possibilities are endless. Here are some things you might explore to raise your vibration, encourage psychic development and facilitate healing on every level of your being at the same time: regular meditation (both mindfulness and guided imagery); eating a light, healthy vegetarian diet; getting daily exercise; yoga (especially kundalini yoga, which opens the third eye); hypnotherapy and past life therapy; prayer; reading, studying and practicing psychic skills like strengthening your aura, raising energy, and mastering the control of your psychic boundaries; spending time in nature; clearing your world of physical clutter; cleansing your aura of astral influences, etc.

There are also online communities that can support you, and lots of information for you in books and on the internet. I recommend a book entitled The Stormy Search for Self by Christina and Stanislav Grof, M.D. In terms of websites, you might begin with the Spiritual Emergence Network.

As for your desire to help others with your psychic abilities, it’s important for you to realize that one of three things may happen whenever you psychically tune in to someone who is in a heavy emotional space: you may go into that heaviness with them; you may try to keep your distance by closing off your heart from them; or you may set a powerful healing tone and lift them up into that higher vibration with you.

In order to become a psychic healer (as opposed to a fortune teller), I had to develop faith that everyone is just where they need to be in order to learn whatever they need to learn. This allows me to truly love and care for people while not getting personally upset or anxious about their problems. For the sake of everyone involved, before you choose to use your psychic abilities to try to help others, I recommend that you similarly cultivate a deep faith that everything ultimately happens for the highest and best.

Please know that you are constantly healing and that everything you experience is designed to lead you to a higher level of experience. If you pray for Spirit to guide you to new peace, well-being, and personal fulfillment, I have faith that you will be led to heal in the perfect way for you.

When Sudden Psychic Development Feels Scary or Overwhelming

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)
Dear Soul Arcanum:

Recently I’ve been seeing things that aren’t normal. I don’t think I’m seeing ghosts, but I do think I see spirits everywhere. These appear to me in many forms, such as mists, sparkles, hazy spots, orbs, etc. I even see them at work and outside. I am also hyper aware of the energies around me. This seems to be increasing, and now I’m starting to hear things – maybe a spirit guide? I’m getting used to this during the day, but I’m terrified at night. In fact, I’ve been sleeping with the lights on. I don’t think I have prayed this much in my entire life! I just want somebody who understands all of this to give me some guidance. Am I psychic whether I like it or not, or am I supposed to decide if I want to keep going in this direction? Is this for the rest of my life? Can I turn it off if I want? I don’t know what I’m supposed to do, and I’m very scared and confused at times. Thank you for your time. – Alicia

Dear Alicia:

Please don’t worry! I have been down this very same road and counseled many fellow travelers, and I can reassure you that what you’re experiencing is indeed normal, and everything will be fine. Though you may not feel like it right now, the fact that you are questioning all of this as you are suggests that you are relatively grounded and psychologically stable.

The way you are perceiving spirits is also verifying, for this is how I generally perceive spirits as well. Most people assume that mediums see spirits much as they are portrayed on television – as opaque or misty people – but in my experience, this is rarely the case. Instead, when we perceive them with our physical eyes, they often appear as mists or balls of energy, and it is within our minds that they telepathically tell us who they are or show us what they looked like when they were alive.

My own psychic awakening happened quite suddenly too, and in the beginning, I saw all sorts of strange beings, such as a demon and a creepy, naked little man or djinn. I was also seeing stuff everywhere and questioning my sanity! When I learned that the only thing to fear is fear itself, and that the key to having higher spiritual experiences was to raise my vibration, then I began to spontaneously receive visits from regular people in spirit.

The first was my grandmother, who appeared as a big misty haze of purple energy hovering about three feet above the floor. It didn’t seem strange or scary while it was happening, but I was overcome with a wave of love. My grandmother visited me a number of times after this, and then I began to have spirits show up for other people.

This usually occurred when someone was either talking wistfully about the spirit in question or their family in general. One man was telling me about his family’s history, and though he hadn’t mentioned his aunt, she came right through. Another time a friend was talking about her brother who had died, and he showed up as a ball of energy next to her. As these spirits appeared, they would talk to me telepathically or send images into my mind.

I don’t see spirits everywhere, nor do I see them all the time; I usually have to be in an altered state of consciousness for this to happen. Based on my own experiences, I don’t think all of what you’re seeing are spirits – as in a person who was once alive in the physical but has crossed over to the afterlife. I think you’re also seeing other subtle energies, which may include conscious beings such as nature spirits, angels and other inhuman astral entities, as well as simpler energies such as auric interactions, thought forms, emotional currents, structures in the astral, etc.

There are ways to turn your psychic senses off, but since they can offer you so many blessings, why not just learn to control them? I consciously created some compartmentalization in my life many years ago so that I wouldn’t be open to spirits all the time. This involved years of intense training in the Spiritualist tradition, lots of independent spiritual study and practice, and the development of a strong relationship with Spirit and my guides.

While the same combination may work for you, it’s important to note that this was not something I thought up; instead, I asked Spirit to guide me, and I followed my intuitions and the signs and synchronicities that flowed in. The most important thing is for you to develop your own clear, trusting relationship with Spirit, God, Divine Intelligence – whatever term you prefer. That way you can ask for whatever you need in any moment, and relax with faith that you will be guided every step of the way.

You don’t have to become a professional psychic or medium or do anything you don’t want to do – the important thing is that you follow your own heart and do what calls to you personally. Just because your psychic senses are roaring now, that doesn’t mean you must build your life around them. Often psychic abilities burst through as a side effect of sudden spiritual development, and if they’re not cultivated, they fade into the background as you settle into a new vibration. In time, all that you’re experiencing will naturally grow more subtle and internal, so instead of seeing these spirits and energies with your physical eyes, they’ll become more like daydreams that play through your mind.

Everyone I know who has been psychically open for some time has learned to gain control of their experiences. Many of those people were also scared and overwhelmed in the beginning like you are, but as they gained spiritual knowledge and experience, they learned to believe in their own perceptions and trust that they were being guided.

Sometimes far out spiritual experiences have no deeper meaning or higher purpose because they’re not coming to us – instead, we are stumbling into strange new territory where all sorts of unusual creatures and possibilities exist in abundance. It’s sort of like wandering into a zoo and seeing elephants and lions and then wondering what it all means and why it’s happening to you. (It’s happening because you’re in a zoo!)

Certainly this sort of thing will make you question what you believe to be real and true about the nature of so-called reality. If you have never seen a lion before and didn’t believe that they really existed, then visiting a zoo will blow your belief system wide open. Let the questions that come up as a result of your experiences guide you with trust that you will find what is natural and right for you.

For example, you may wonder how in the world seeing that demon was right for me. Well, that whole experience led me to one of the most powerful spiritual lessons I’ve ever learned: that what I experience on an inner, spiritual level is entirely within my own control, for succumbing to fear leads to fearful experiences, while setting a high intention and living with faith leads to wonderful experiences.

In summary, I recommend you pray over the whole situation and ask Spirit to show you what you’re to do with all of this. If it feels right to you, you might look for a local Spiritualist church, for there you will find a medium who can mentor you and also a development circle full of kindred spirits who can help you to make the most of your divine gifts. Remember that many, many people have walked this same path before you, that what you’re experiencing is entirely normal, and if you pray for help from Spirit, you will be guided every step of the way.

Do Some Spiritual Arts Conflict with Others?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)
Dear Soul Arcanum:

Do you think I may be limiting my success or working against myself by trying to improve my psychic skills and spirit communication abilities while at the same time studying Wicca and spell crafting? – Kim

Dear Kim:

I think it’s natural and healthy to explore all sorts of different paths and teachings in search of what works best for you. Most people who consider themselves to be spiritual as opposed to religious have done this to at least some degree. In my opinion, it’s a sign of true intelligence and open-mindedness! After all, how do you really know the best path for you until you explore your options?

That being said, there is definitely a difference between spiritual dabblers and spiritual teachers or masters. For one thing, the dabblers are seeking something, while the masters have found something and chosen to pour all of their beings into that path. This does not necessarily mean that one is in some way ahead of the other, for every time we evolve into new potential, we begin to seek new truths and practices that resonate with who we have become. As we need different things at different stages in our journeys, our inner beings are ever calling us toward whatever we need most at that time.

I’m wondering what is behind your concern, and whether it arises from a sense that what you’ve been doing isn’t really working for you, or whether it’s a question that came up because of some outside comment or influence. Discerning the difference is the real issue here, for you are in the process of learning to trust your own judgment and inner guidance.

Your question reminds me of when I was in training to become a Spiritualist minister, and one of my teachers occasionally made disparaging remarks about Wicca. As I had practiced Wicca for a number of years and had some of the most incredible spiritual experiences of my life in Wiccan rituals, my ears really perked up.

Since I greatly respected this teacher, I found myself questioning my own experiences with Wicca. My own truth rang through strong and clear, however, while what my teacher was saying did not reflect my experiences. I then gave up questioning my views and instead tuned in to try to determine why my teacher was so down on Wicca.

When I asked Spirit about this, I was made to understand that she had had a very different quality of exposure to Wicca, and that her understanding of it was superficial. She didn’t know what Wicca could be or is really all about. This would be comparable to someone forming an opinion of the Catholic Church based solely on what they had read in the paper about priests sexually abusing children.

This surprised me, as this teacher was clearly very spiritually open otherwise. It also made me realize that everyone makes snap judgments sometimes, myself included. For example, if someone mentioned they were into Satanism, I know I would instantly have a negative reaction to the whole subject. I must also confess that I don’t know much about Satanism, have no desire to know more, and am quite closed minded on the matter!

I have since often encountered a disparaging attitude toward Wicca not only in traditional Christian religions but also in other Spiritualist circles. While much of this can be explained by people not having true understanding of the Wiccan/pagan path, it can also be attributed to at least two other main factors.

First, Westerners have been socialized in a culture that is still strongly influenced by the Catholic Church, which of course condemned and persecuted pagans for centuries and falsely demonized earth-based religions. Sadly, not many people are intelligent enough to think for themselves and question all of this, or ambitious enough to seek out a true education on the subject. (Believe me, what we’re taught in school is not what really happened!) It is only those who have explored these matters for themselves who know how hypocritical the Church was in demonizing earlier religions, for most of the rites and rituals of the Catholic Church are pagan in origin.

The second reason I think there is a bit of a clash between Spiritualism and paganism is because pagans and other earth-based religions tend to work with lower vibrational energies of the earth, nature spirits and the elements, while Spiritualists reach for the divine and planes beyond the physical. Again, we have been socialized to view the earth as less than heaven – the body as sinful while the spirit is divine.

To sort this out, I strongly urge you to listen to your intuition and pursue whatever calls to you, for in this way, ultimately you will end up with what speaks most to your own soul and works best for you. You are wise, however, to ask yourself what teachings and practices will best help you fulfill your personal goals.

If you want to develop your mediumship abilities to work with the grieving, Spiritualist training is a great choice. If you want to be able to see fairies or work magick, then Wicca might be better. Please remember that you can do both and more, of course! In fact, if you want to become a medium in order to free earthbound spirits, a combination may be best, because you would be connecting with spirits of a lower vibration. If instead, you want to channel divine healing and messages from guides and angels, you might find it easier to attain the high vibration needed for that sort of thing through Spiritualism or some other channel.

I am not in any way suggesting that any one path is better than another, as I do not believe that is true. That would be like saying that the color blue is better than the color red. I do, however, believe that we all travel a natural order of progression, and are ever rising in vibration. Thus people tend to get interested in more earthly psychic phenomena before they are drawn to explore higher realms. We must also remember that evolution is not a straight line; it’s more like a spiral. If we focus on only one aspect of development, we’ll only get so far before we are led to circle back and bring the rest of our being up to speed. So someone who was a master at working with earth energies could be much more evolved than a dabbler who happened to be into angels at the moment. On top of all of this, we are all unique, and are wise to honor our special gifts and pursue our personal passions.

In summary, the ultimate authority on what will work best for you is YOU. Trust your own experiences and your own inner being/intuition, and don’t let anyone else tell you what you should be doing on your spiritual path, or what you should stay away from. Remember too that often the paths that people may fear and warn you against are simply both misunderstood and very powerful.

I recommend you ask Spirit to guide you to whatever you need now, and forge your own path by taking the best of what you find along the way and leaving behind whatever doesn’t resonate with you as true or useful. With this approach, you will naturally tailor your spiritual journey to your true Divine self, and honor your connection to Spirit as the most sacred, personal relationship you could ever have.

Coping with Sudden Psychic Awakening

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)
Dear Soul Arcanum:

Two years ago I basically died. I stopped breathing, and while I was medically dead, I was pulled into a vortex where I saw obelisks with weird glyphs on them. Some were black and some white, and they were in a sandstorm. I was in a place I felt I had been before, and I heard a soft female voice speaking to me. She didn’t speak English, yet I knew what she was saying. She read something to me, and then she said, You must return. You’re needed. I was then sucked back and painfully reinserted into my body. I was in a state of shock for a week, and then I began to become aware of more things than any human could be. I’m now clairvoyant to the point where I scare myself. I have really frightening recurring dreams, and when I touch physical objects, I see things. It’s weird! I have always had a touch of psychic ability, but this is way more than that, and I don’t know what to do with it all. I have a friend who is clairvoyant, and she said that I have a psychic aura that is growing. She also said that my light is darkness. What does that mean? Can you help me sort this out?

– Stephanie

Dear Stephanie:

In the West, psychic matters have largely either been dismissed as utter nonsense or are considered so frightening that the subject is taboo. By contrast, in many other cultures, psychic experiences are an accepted part of everyday life.

I think a lot of our struggles with spiritual awakening are culturally driven. Since the U.S. is such a melting pot of various peoples, we don’t have traditions or teachings with which to make sense of our psychic experiences. Further, the breakdown of organized religion has left most of us without any sort of spiritual community to lean upon during times of spiritual crisis.

Most people don’t give much thought to spiritual matters until something happens that totally rocks their world, and then they have no one they can go to for help and advice. When they get on the internet in search of answers, many end up at my virtual doorstep.

As I hear this sort of thing all the time, I can reassure you that what you’re going through is quite common. For most people, awakening is a gentle, gradual process. When it happens suddenly, as it did with you, it tends to create a lot of fear and stress.

Near death experiences are a very common cause of sudden spiritual awakening. Since sudden awakenings strike people who have not been consciously preparing for them, those people often feel really overwhelmed. Instead of trying to shut down or close themselves off because they’re afraid, what they need to do is stop focusing on the symptoms (the psychic phenomena), and instead focus on the cause of their discomfort (their need for greater spiritual development.)

It’s sort of like you read a book about being a pilot and then you were put in a fighter jet and told to fly. Instead of worrying about all the ups and downs, you must focus on getting the skills you need to have a safe, smooth journey.

Some key elements of preparing for spiritual awakening include healing old wounds to the psyche; purifying your being; and cultivating faith, compassion, spiritual knowledge and wisdom.

To heal old psychic wounds, you must cultivate self-awareness via tools like journaling, meditation, therapy, deep reflection, etc. You have to face and make peace with your own inner shadows. A big part of this involves learning to forgive yourself and others for past mistakes. It also involves accepting the truth that everything happens for a good reason, for this empowers us to stop blaming things outside ourselves (including God) for our suffering. Only then can we make peace with the past and relax about the future.

Purifying your being involves clearing your body, heart, mind and spirit of blocks and lower energies. On a physical level, this may mean changing your diet and working with something like yoga. (I highly recommend yoga, for its very purpose is to facilitate spiritual awakening.)

To purify your heart and mind, you’ll have to let go of anything of a lower nature and consciously cultivate higher energies. For example, if you harbor resentment against someone, you’ll have to learn to forgive them. If you lust after fame and fortune, you’ll need to cultivate awareness of what’s truly of lasting value to your soul and teach yourself to focus on those things first and foremost.

Setting a clear, high intention will give you tremendous psychic protection. If you don’t have any conscious intention at all, you’ll encounter all sorts of crazy situations. It’s like wandering aimlessly around town – you could end up in some beautiful museum, but you could also end up in a ghetto.

Further, as you learn how to lift yourself out of fearful self-interest to act with love and compassion, you’ll gain control over the quality of your spiritual experiences. For example, through awareness that fear draws frightening entities while love and compassion summon angels and other beings of a higher spiritual nature, you can manifest the quality of experience you desire. It’s essential that you own your power to create your own reality. You’re doing this anyway, so you might as well seize the reins and create wonderful, positive spiritual experiences instead of negative or frightening ones.

You must also learn to trust that whatever comes up for you is designed to teach you something. When you encounter shadows in your outer experience, they always reflect shadows in your own nature, or else they couldn’t enter your experience. Any darkness that comes up is reaching for your attention, and when you shine the light of your awareness on it, it will naturally disappear.

I feel this is what your friend meant when she said that your light is darkness. You have divine light within you that is waiting for you to let it shine. Right now there is much darkness in your aura because you’re afraid, and because you have yet to become aware of all that is happening within you. As you become more aware, you’ll turn that light on.

You’re also being called to learn to love all aspects of your being, and to trust your own inner guidance by pursuing all that you feel drawn to explore and letting go of all that you are guided to release from your life. The more you trust and act on your intuition, the faster you’ll find new balance.

I recommend you read up on psychic matters and undertake focused spiritual studies and training, for the more you learn, the more comfortable you will feel. This will help you leave fear behind and manifest a higher level of experience. Ask your inner being to guide you to the spiritual practices and information that are right for you.

Finally, I believe that everyone who is psychically active should develop a strong relationship with their spirit guides/ angels. These spiritual beings want to help, teach and guide us, especially as we evolve in spiritual consciousness. As they exist at a high vibration, you must shift into a high vibration to consciously connect with them. (I’ve written extensively on how to raise your vibration in other articles.)

Once you create a stronger spiritual foundation, it will be natural for you to have wonderful spiritual experiences, and easy for you to access Spirit’s help and guidance whenever you need it.

Sorting Dark Spirits from Light and Other Confusing Psychic Matters

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

Over the past two years, I’ve spontaneously started developing all sorts of new psychic abilities. The progression has been very confusing and intense. Too many things are happening to name them all here, so I’ll focus on the most confusing: Why is it that in my conversations with other people, they say things they don’t remember saying, which are repeated time and again until the actual event happens? Also, when will I be able to weed out dark spirit voices from light ones? Thank you for your time, effort and energy!
– Rachel

Dear Rachel:

In my early days of psychic awakening, I also often mixed up what people had actually told me with what I had picked up psychically, and I imagine this is a rather common experience. For example, a budding psychic may sense what someone is thinking but remember it as something that they actually said.

Picture that you’re having an argument with your husband, and he says out loud, “Yes, dear,” but then while your back is turned to him, he mentally says to himself, “What a nag!” In your mind, you hear his nasty comment, and you whirl around and lash back at him. He could protest like crazy that all he said was “Yes, dear,” but you know better.

This is not exactly how it works, however. It’s more common to pick up on someone’s true feelings and intentions as opposed to actual words from their minds. In fact, many people mistakenly believe that if someone can “read their mind,” they can hear their thoughts word for word, but I’ve never known anyone who could do that. Instead, mind reading is tuning in to what someone really feels, means or intends.

So if someone is pretending to be friendly but they have some hidden ulterior motive, it would be easy for you to pick up on that. This is especially true if they mean you some harm, for our psychic senses are designed to help us protect ourselves as we move through life.

When I was awakening, I was really surprised to discover how frequently many people are secretive, insincere or downright dishonest. You might also regularly pick up on it if someone says they’re not mad at you when they really are, or they’re listening to you when in truth their minds are somewhere else. Someone who is being flooded with psychic input for the first time can naturally get confused if they are tuning in to what is really happening without conscious awareness that this is what they’re doing.

This is especially true when we deal with people lacking in self-awareness. For example, there are many people who have developed such a habit of fudging the truth, pretending to be cheerful, or putting on some other social mask that they don’t even realize they’re doing it. If you respond to what’s happening beneath the surface as opposed to what they’re presenting to the world, they may truly have no conscious idea what you’re talking about. Further, since most people will take them at face value, you will seem like the strange one. (However, I do believe that we all know what is real and true on some level – psychics are simply more conscious of this awareness. It’s this inner knowing that is usually the source of hunches and intuitions.)

It also sounds like you’re mixing up what’s happening in the present from what will happen in the future. You said that these perceptions repeat over and over again until the actual event happens in your outer experience. This is similar to mixing up what is happening on a deeper level from what is happening on the surface, only now, you’re tuning in to the future but you think it’s the present.

This could stem from the confusion of being suddenly flooded by lots of psychic input, but it could also happen because your inner being is trying to show you the validity of your psychic perceptions. By repeating over and over until what you’re anticipating actually happens, your psychic ability is validated.

As for discerning dark spirits from light, periods of sudden or intense psychic awakening can be very unsettling and stressful. When the foundation of what we believe to be reality begins to shift under our feet, it’s normal to question our sanity. It’s also normal to feel pretty freaked out sometimes and totally fascinated at others. As we emotionally swing from a high vibration to a low vibration and back again, we manifest a hodgepodge of all sorts of psychic experiences, some light and some dark.

Imagine that you’ve begun to explore a newly discovered continent. This is a place that few people have ever visited, and most of the landscape is a mystery. You’ve only read about others’ adventures in this territory, and some of those accounts described a strange, dangerous landscape, while others depicted a heavenly paradise.

Just as is true in the physical, both can exist in the same place. One area of the same city can be beautiful and rich with all sorts of wonderful attractions, while just a few blocks away there is suffering, crime and poverty. If you want to only meet the best sorts of people in any land, you must go to the best places and become a good judge of character.

In order to go to the best places when tuning in to other worlds, you have to come from a high vibration yourself. Like attracts like, so if you are of love and light, you will attract spirits of love and light. If you are free of fear and full of faith, and your intentions are pure and high-minded, you will naturally attract spirits of a similar nature. (I’ve written extensively on how to generate and maintain a high vibration in other articles.)

You can also use prayer to ask the Universe and your spirit guides to help you manifest the quality of experience you desire. This is why many people use prayers of protection or surround themselves with white light when they are communicating with spirits. In this way, they consciously align with a higher level of experience instead of taking whatever and whoever comes their way. This is akin to choosing where in a city you want to visit and who you want to talk to, as opposed to just wandering around, talking to any stranger you see on the street.

In order to sort out the true nature of the spirits you encounter, you must learn to trust the way you FEEL. This is the only way, for lower astral entities are known to be deceptive in what they say, but they can’t fake or hide their true essence. If the hair stands up on the back of your neck, your heart starts pounding, or you feel at all uneasy, your inner being is trying to warn you. By contrast, communicating with a spirit guide or any other well-intentioned entity is never frightening. Those experiences feel peaceful, loving, beautiful, empowering, uplifting and positive.

If you simply pray for Spirit to guide you, I know you can manifest greater understanding of your wonderful gifts!

Pregnancy and Spiritual Awakening

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I’ve read that when your first child was born, you were launched on a spiritual journey. I’m very curious about this. Would you mind sharing what it was about this child or about the birth process that led to awakening? I’m beginning training as a doula, and I’m excited to participate in the amazing changes that childbearing can bring. I would like to address this experience in my capacity as a childbirth educator. Many thanks!
– Kathe

Dear Kathe:

First I want to explain that everyone is in the process of spiritual awakening; most of us are just going about it so gradually that we don’t really notice it. To awaken spiritually is really just to expand in consciousness, which is a natural product of experience.

There are turning points, however, when we wake up to the truth that there is far more to life than what can be perceived with the five physical senses. This generally involves territory that we consider to be overtly “spiritual” in nature, such as having psychic experiences or being able to consciously manifest what we want in our lives. It is at this point that I think most people use the term spiritual awakening.

As this is such a profound transformational shift, it’s natural for it to affect a person on every level, and to change the very way they look at life or the nature of reality. This process can feel very messy, uncomfortable and out of control, but it can also feel fascinating and exciting.

We all go through natural growth cycles, and some even go so far as to say that these cycles last about seven years. (It’s interesting to note that this is also the amount of time that doctors say it takes for us to replace every cell in our bodies with new cells – so we literally become a new person every seven years.)

At the end of each cycle, we tend to grow restless and dissatisfied, which creates the desire to explore something new. We then go in search of whatever may be missing in our lives, choose what resonates with us, and devote ourselves to it. With time, we master it and may even teach it to others. Then it becomes so familiar that it no longer thrills us the way it used to, and before long, we’re restless again. At the beginning of each cycle of spiritual development, we awaken to new realizations, new possibilities, and new personal abilities.

This is the path of someone who gradually grows more interested in spiritual matters and begins to read books, take classes, and try things like meditation or yoga. These explorations then lead to other new interests or higher levels of practice and gradual spiritual growth. It’s a bit like awakening slowly on a weekend morning, remembering where you are, what happened yesterday, and what you are going to do today.

By contrast, a sudden awakening is like being startled by a thundering crash in the middle of the night, not knowing what’s happening, if you’re safe (and sane) or not, and what you should do next.

There are many things that can suddenly wake people up. Any sort of intense stress or loss can spark a spiritual awakening, including physical abuse or other trauma, childbirth, a near death experience, etc. The stress doesn’t have to be physical, however; often it’s a divorce, the death of a loved one, or a major career or business failure that launches an awakening.

Of course, not everyone who gives birth awakens, nor does everyone who goes through a divorce. It depends on how ready you are to wake up and how far beyond your comfort zone you are pushed. When our egos are stripped of their illusions of control and begin to crack under the strain of whatever is happening, that’s when divine light begins to pour in.

As for why pregnancy is so often a time of awakening for women, I have a few theories. First, pregnancy can be a very stressful, anxious time for many women, especially first-time mothers. Personally, I have never felt more vulnerable or out of control than when I was pregnant. Knowing that you have no choice but to surrender to pregnancy and childbirth could prove very unsettling for anyone with control issues.

Pregnant women are also literally channels to the spirit world, as they are bringing souls through to this world from the other side. This opens something of a portal to all sorts of intuitions and other spiritual phenomena, which can blow a woman’s mind open to all kinds of new possibilities.

Also, when a woman is carrying a highly spiritual child, it’s natural for the child to influence her own vibration. This is sort of like being in the presence of a guru non-stop for nine months. While I believe that most children have higher vibrations than their parents because we are all evolving, if a woman is carrying a very psychic or spiritual child, odds are good that at least during the pregnancy, her own vibration will rise, her psychic abilities will suddenly kick in, etc. This is largely what I attribute my own awakening to.

Pregnancy is also a time when many women cultivate a deeper sense of peace and love. They may take better care of themselves than ever before, and slow down to just “be” for the first time in their lives. They may begin to ponder life and where we all come from as they never have before. They may also feel very happy and grateful for the child they’ve conceived, and all of these will raise a woman’s vibration, which will naturally lead to higher spiritual experiences.

This brings me to the greatest reason I believe that pregnant women often experience spiritual awakening or the sudden development of new psychic powers. Pregnancy is one of the only times women have both a very high vibration and a very strong connection to a soul in the spirit world. Because their vibration is high, many pregnant women are able to consciously perceive signs and messages from the spirit of their unborn baby.

There are only a few times when spirits in the afterlife are super motivated to get through to us: when we’re in grave danger, when they’ve just crossed over, and just before they are to be born. When we’re in danger, much depends on how receptive we are. Often spirits are successful in warning us at such times simply because they try so very hard.

When they’ve just died, our vibration is usually very low with grief, so we can’t connect with them consciously even though they may be trying very hard to comfort us.

Just before a loved one in Spirit is to be born, however, our vibration is generally very high, which is ideal for spirit contact. Thus many women experience signs, messages, dreams, intuitions, etc., from the spirits of the babies they are carrying.

This is actually quite common, and much has been written about it. For more information, you might begin by exploring the work of Elisabeth Hallet at www.light-hearts.com. I also recommend Carol Bowman’s research.

May the love and care you give to new mothers and babies bring you many blessings!
