Learning to Control the Quality of Astral Experiences

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I have been aware of the spiritual plane for as long as I can remember, going back to when I was a preschooler and could perceive a man in a top hat who used to watch me in my room every night. I have dreams where I meet people who have passed. In these dreams, I always travel by elevator, and the place I end up in is always a hotel of some sort, ranging from dreary (a woman who did not know she was dead) to the most beautiful room I have ever seen surrounded by walls of glass and this beautiful light that can’t be described. The light was so dense and so magnificent that nothing besides the light could be seen beyond the windows. The real reason I write is because I need help. Starting back in highschool, I occasionally had spirits try to frighten me. Many nights, my mirror would lift off my wall at approximately 2 a.m. and knock over everything on my nighttable. Sometimes my radio would turn on. (This was particularly effective near Halloween when scary commercials were on.) I continued with my prayers and made it through what was a scary time for me. Sometime later, I began to experience sleep paralysis. I became a master of focusing calmly on moving one body part and breaking the trance. I have left my body and heard the voice of my great-grandmother. One time I left my body and when I returned there was a very scary, evil-looking woman approaching my body; I began to pray to God and she snarled and vanished. Last night, I had several episodes that were weak and I was too tired to care, so I fought it off but wasn’t bothered by it. The last time, though, my entire body began to vibrate violently and I began to pray and the vibrations ceased and I was free. I know that I need to better protect myself and I know spirits are trying to contact me, but I am apprehensive. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your time.

Janelle

Dear Janelle:

As we naturally evolve spiritually, it’s normal to have spontaneous psychic experiences, to begin to consciously remember out-of body-experiences, and to eventually gain the ability to leave our bodies at will. It’s also normal to be anxious about this, for these are not everyday, ordinary experiences. Most of us have been taught what to do in order to remain physically safe. We’re told not to open the door to a stranger, and should we set ourselves on fire, to stop, drop and roll. No one tells us what to do when we feel paralyzed in bed and sense an evil presence nearby!

In addition to being psychically sensitive, I would bet you are also under some stress. The sorts of experiences you describe tend to happen when people are extremely sleep-deprived. They also tend to pick up during times of change and transition, such as the teen years, when babies are born, during final exams in college, during career changes, when going through a divorce or getting married, when moving into a new house, etc. Any event or change that causes stress can make us vulnerable to negative psychic experiences, for what we attract on a psychic level is a direct reflection of our inner state of being.

If you can control your inner state of being, you can control the quality of your experiences when you’re in an altered state of consciousness. If you’re anxious when you project or shift your awareness to the astral, you will tend to have frightening experiences, so anything you do that helps to lower your stress level would be helpful. If you are in a state of peace and wonder, you will have wonderful experiences. If you find yourself in an unnerving situation, try to stay calm and assume that all is and will be well. (That’s good advice whether you’re in the astral or the physical!)

Obviously, the more you know about the astral, the less fear you will have of the unknown. With this in mind, I recommend you engage in deep study of the astral, spirits, and out of body experiences. For starters, you might read Astral Dynamics, Mastering Astral Projection, and Practical Psychic Self-Defense by Robert Bruce. Also Journeys Out of the Body by Robert Monroe and Out of Body Experiences: How to Have them and What to Expect by Robert Peterson. It will take a great investment of time and energy to master this material, but since you’re having these experiences anyway, you definitely need an education in this subject.

It would be profoundly empowering on many levels to learn how to control your vibration by studying energy healing and the law of attraction. Remember: if you can control your inner state of being, you can control the quality of your psychic experiences! This has been known by mystics for millennia. It’s even in the Bible!

For example, Proverbs 4:23 – 27, says: Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life….Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech. Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path. Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil. In Proverbs 2:7 – 11, the Bible says, [God] is a shield to those who walk with integrity…He guards the paths of the just…Wise choices will watch over you. Understanding will keep you safe.

So what does it mean to guard your heart and to mark out a straight path? If you are at war with anyone in your life, then you carry the vibration of discord. If you send evil thoughts to the person who cut you off in traffic, to the rude person in line at the grocery store, if you are full of bitterness at your ex-spouse or feel like a victim in some way, you will tend to have negative psychic experiences. If, instead, you are ever seeking peace and harmony, if you “forgive those who trespass against you,” if you are tolerant of others and look for the divine in them, if you can bless those who do things you don’t like and not take their behavior personally, then you will radiate peace and attract positive psychic experiences.

This is not easy, but there is no more important work in life than learning how to “guard”/purify our hearts and minds.

By learning how to work with energy, as in energy healing, you will learn how to shift your vibration from anxious to faithful, how to infuse situations with positive energy, how to deflect negative energy – the list goes on and on. How you learn energy healing should be organic, by which I mean that you are guided to it by Spirit. Put out a call/prayer and see where you are guided. I was trained in the Spiritualist tradition, and I’m partial to this method because it is simple and demystified. Many traditions make things far more complicated than is necessary, and surround their teachings with unfounded mystique.

Speaking of which, Robert Bruce has a new book on healing entitled Energy Work: The Secrets of Healing and Spiritual Growth. I haven’t had a chance to read it yet, but based on his other work, I’m sure it’s great. I’m also sure that it’s no accident that this expert on astral projection has written a book on energy healing, for in order to control your astral experiences, you must be able to consciously influence/control energy.

Visual Phenomena and Psychic Awakening

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I have begun to see things I never used to see. For example, I see various shadows and lights in empty space; they are so subtle that they are almost imperceptible. I have been to the eye doctor and even a neurologist and they can find no reason for this. The reason I am writing to you is because in the past week or so, I started to see light and color around people’s heads. At first I thought this was another issue with my vision, but then the word “aura” popped into my mind, and it hit me that maybe what I’m experiencing is more metaphysical than physical. (I have only seen these auras around two individuals; I don’t see them all the time.) I feel really spaced out these days; I can’t focus like I used to, which has made it hard to be productive in my job as a paralegal. Do you think what I’m experiencing is spiritual in nature? I hope so, because I’ve been afraid that I have a brain tumor!

K.

Dear K.:

While I’m very glad that you’ve seen doctors about this, it breaks my heart that you went through all of that testing fearing that you had a brain tumor. In other times and places, these sorts of experiences were better understood. Can you imagine how different your experience would have been if you had been immediately directed to the neighborhood shaman, guru or spiritual healer, and promptly received a clear explanation and helpful advice? It seems like “modern science” is even eradicating spirit in cultures with the strongest foundations of spiritual knowledge, for I keep hearing from people in India who are experiencing classic psychic phenomena who are writing to me half a world a way for help. When I recommend they find a local guru to help them, they say they wouldn’t know where to find such an individual! In any case, it is helpful that you’ve ruled out physical causes, for now we can feel free to explore metaphysical explanations.

There are hundreds of “symptoms” associated with spiritual/psychic awakening. (I hesitate to use the word “symptoms” because this connotes pathology, so from here on out, we’ll call them “signs.”) In your question, you present two of the most common: seeing/sensing subtle energy and feeling spaced out or out of touch with mundane reality. These signs are especially common in early spiritual awakening. I experienced the exact same thing way back when I first began to explore spiritual practices. I had had a number of spontaneous psychic experiences prior to choosing to actively explore spiritual matters; it was these experiences that ignited my interest in metaphysics. When I began to spend a lot of time in altered states of consciousness via practices like meditation, all sorts of interesting things began to happen.

For me, seeing auras came first. It is normal to see auras around some people and not others, especially when this is happening spontaneously as opposed to it happening as a result of your own conscious effort. The first time I ever saw an aura, I was in a university lecture for an Eastern Religions class. I had been dabbling in meditation for a few weeks at this point. The lecture was held in a very large hall with the professor on a stage with a spotlight on him at the podium. As is common in long lectures, I kept drifting in and out of a trance state. As my mind wandered, my vision went into a soft focus so I was no longer really focused on anything or anyone in particular. That’s when I noticed something amazing: the professor had a huge yellow light all around him! At first I assumed this had something to do with the spotlight, but when he wandered away from it and into the shadows on the stage, the light remained the same. That’s when I realized that it was coming from him instead of from some outside source.

Like you, it took me a moment to realize that I was probably seeing his aura. Needless to say, I don’t think I heard much of the lecture after that, for all sorts of thoughts began to race through my mind. I found myself thinking about pictures of Jesus and the saints and how they were depicted with this same golden light around them. I wondered if the artists who painted them this way were clairvoyant or if these subjects were so spiritually bright that their auras shone forth for all the world to see. I thought it was fascinating that the aura I was seeing belonged to a professor of Eastern Religion. What sort of spiritual development might he have undertaken over his many years of studying various mystical paths? Certainly he would be more spiritually developed than the average person; was this why I was seeing his aura and no one else’s? I wondered how many of my fellow students might be seeing the same thing I was, so I started looking around the large auditorium, but everyone else seemed to be experiencing nothing more than an ordinary lecture. I tried to see their auras to no avail. I dove more deeply into meditation after this, however, and over the course of the semester, I did begin to see auras on most people when I tried to make that happen.

Some time after this, I began to practice astral projection, which involves spending a lot of time in a deep meditative state. That is when I began to notice what appeared to be shadowy lines and structures in otherwise empty space. It was like seeing a vague shadow of another world. I would see walls and beams and objects so faint that it wasn’t clear what they were, it was just clear that “something” was there. It sounds like you are seeing the same things I was.

These perceptions happen when we’re in a “spaced out” or trance state of mind. As we begin to awaken spiritually, we naturally get “spacey” like this, for our left brain and its psychic/intuitive abilities kick on more and more. It’s also normal to feel drawn into introspection and called to explore deep questions and issues instead of mundane reality. The more time you spend in trance/deep reflection, the more subtle energy you tend to perceive. This is true whether you are purposefully entering altered states of consciousness via practices like meditation, taking mind altering drugs, or simply lost in deep contemplation.

As you naturally evolve spiritually, your vibration rises to the point where you’re able to perceive a higher range of frequencies than you could before. You also become more and more sensitive, which makes you more perceptive and more consciously aware of what your psychic senses are picking up. When you then focus your attention beyond this world by entering a trance state, you begin to perceive things that exist beyond the physical. (This is why meditation naturally leads to psychic development.)

I encourage you to research the many other signs of spiritual awakening, for if you’re not experiencing them now, you may be soon, and I don’t want you to worry that something is wrong with you! This is a normal, natural process. Try to relax, go with the spiritual flow, and trust that whatever you need will come to you as you move forward.

Controlling Spirit Communication

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I have spontaneously brought through amazing messages from someone else’s loved one in Spirit a few times. Since then, I have tried to do this for others, but it is rare that I can bring through a particular spirit on request. Sometimes, the spirit that comes through seems random; other times I feel like I have a spirit that is connected with the person but they don’t recognize the spirit based on what I bring through. This leads me to doubt my spirit communication abilities and to feel bad because I know I am disappointing someone who needs to hear from someone they have lost. Do you have any advice for me?

Martha:

Dear Martha:

I wish I had easy answers for you, but what you describe is actually similar to my own experiences as a medium. My first spirit communication experiences were also spontaneous. I would be talking with someone when I would become aware of a presence around them that was trying to talk to me in my mind. When I got up the nerve to relay what I was being told, I was amazed at the profound healing that unfolded. From this I developed a strong desire to help the grieving in this way, and eventually, I was guided to The School of Spiritual Healing and Prophecy in Lily Dale, New York, where I learned how to refine my spirit communication abilities.

While I received wonderful training there, I still can’t guarantee that I will be able to connect with a particular spirit, and I have never met any medium who can. Famous mediums on TV may look like they can, but it’s simply because we are only being shown their greatest successes. Of course, I could be wrong about this; if you are a medium who can connect with any spirit at any time, please email me and set me straight – I want to meet you!

There are all sorts of factors that affect spirit communication. I have noticed that my own abilities seem to wax and wane. While I haven’t been able to determine why this would be, one element is clearly the level of my own desire. When I’m focused on spirit communication and full of compassion for the grieving, amazing spirit communication tends to happen; when I am caught up in other interests and endeavors, it naturally tends to fall back.

I also feel that we can evolve beyond the vibration essential to spirit communication. There is a natural progression in psychic development from frightening experiences to spirit communication to awareness of higher beings like spirit guides and angels. If we become accustomed to reaching as high as we can vibrationally, we may have to step down our vibration a few notches to connect with human beings who have passed. This is like working with a highly sensitive radio tuner; it’s simpler to turn it all the way to the right than to find a specific frequency in the middle.

Because I can’t guarantee that I will be able to bring through the individual being sought, I will try for evidential information and if I don’t get it, encourage the person to try another medium or try again at a later date. (I never charge anything for tuning in to see if I can get someone on the line.)

Communication is a two-way street. Often when spirits first cross over, they don’t know any more about how to communicate with us here than the average person knows about how to communicate with the dearly departed. Someone who thought spirit communication was a bunch of hogwash when alive may not instantly change his mind upon crossing over. When my best friend from high school died, I found it impossible to contact her at first. When I asked Spirit about this, I was reminded that my friend didn’t believe in an afterlife, and made to understand that she was experiencing what she expected to experience when she died: a state of nothingness. In time, she would begin to wonder who was experiencing that nothingness and open up to new awareness. Some months after she died, I began to get dream visits from her.

Sometimes there are simply communication problems either because the spirit isn’t great at communicating in general or because the styles of communication between the medium and the spirit are too different. To compound the problem, you can try to connect with a particular spirit only to have another individual burst in. Last week when I was tuning in for a woman who had lost her partner, I was shown lots of images of cooking. I was then shown a man in full military uniform in an old photograph. I knew this was a male spirit and that I was being shown him as he looked when he was younger. I relayed all of this to my potential client, and none of it clicked with her. The NEXT day I received an email from a woman wanting to connect with her departed father, with a link to his obituary. He was a celebrated chef and had been in the military. The obituary featured a picture of him when he was a young man; his was the face in the photograph I had been shown the day before. So when I tuned in for the first woman, a spirit came through for someone I hadn’t had any contact with yet! This has happened a number of times over the years. This spirit was so eager to come through that he “cut in line” and popped through when a different spirit was being sought.

You wrote that sometimes you feel you have the right spirit on the line, but the person isn’t recognizing what you’re bringing through. This has happened to me a number of times. For example, I was reading for a woman who was devastated by the loss of her husband. He kept showing me a framed picture with birds in it in their living room. When I relayed this to her, she said there was no such picture in her home, and she had no idea what it meant. Based on other verifiable information, we proceeded with the reading. I read for her perhaps a dozen times over several years, and each time, he showed me this picture of birds. I eventually stopped including that information because it didn’t mean anything to her.

A few years after he had died, she wrote to me for another reading. She needed to know what to do with her departed husband’s beloved birds, which were in a cage in their living room. She had been caring for them ever since his death. She sometimes felt that he was trying to talk to her through the birds. On the whole, however, the noise they made drove her crazy, so she wanted to know from him what he wanted her to do with them: keep them or give them to someone else. I was dumbfounded! Somehow she did not connect the “picture of birds in the living room” with the ACTUAL birds in the living room! All that time, he had been trying to answer the question in her heart. My point is that sometimes, you DO have the right spirit on the line, but for some reason, the person receiving the message just can’t put it all together.

Not being able to connect with a spirit does not mean that they are lost or confused on the other side or that you are incapable of spirit communication in general, for there are many factors that influence our ability to connect with certain spirits. Further, we need to remember that spirit communication is more of a miracle than a given. While I would love to be able to connect with any spirit at any time, I have learned to be grateful for those experiences that do shine through with amazing evidential information.

Telepathic Pain Connection

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I was with my fiance, Scott, for ten years before he died. Scott’s mother is 84 years old, and we were his caregivers for the last year of his life. We bonded on a very deep level as we shared the pain of losing him. For the past three weeks or so, I have had extreme soreness in my neck and shoulders. I am a runner and attributed this to needing a new pair of running shoes, though this pain seemed strange and different from aches and pains I’ve experienced in the past. When I called Scott’s mom tonight and asked her how she was doing, she told me that HER neck and shoulders have been aching and that she had just found out that she has a pinched nerve. I didn’t even tell her about MY neck and shoulder pain. I am now wondering if it is possible that I was picking up on her pain, and if so, what you would call this. This is not the only time we have had a strange connection like this. While I don’t believe in coincidences, I haven’t always had these experiences; there seems to be something special going on with Scott’s mom. Have you heard of anything like this before?

K.

Dear K.:

Your question reminded me of all sorts of amazing personal experiences and stories I have heard from others over the years. For example, a few months ago, I awoke early in the morning feeling strangely dizzy and queasy. As I was very groggy, I wondered if I was getting sick but then quickly drifted back to sleep. I then dreamed that my teenage daughter came into my bedroom and told me that she was feeling queasy and didn’t want to go to school. I woke up from that dream and drifted off again. About fifteen minutes later, my daughter actually came into my room and woke me up and told me that she wasn’t feeling well and didn’t want to go to school. I then realized that my own physical discomfort had disappeared, and that I had been picking up on what was happening with her.

This sort of telepathic connection is known to be especially strong in twins. I recently became acquainted with an amazing story of identical twins who not only regularly experience each other’s pain, but also have physical manifestations of what happens to the other twin. For example, one twin got accidentally socked in the eye while playing at a playground one day, which led to her developing a black eye. At the exact moment that the twin was injured, the other twin experienced pain in her eye and later developed a black eye even though her own eye hadn’t experienced any physical trauma.

There are all sorts of amazing stories of people who experience a telepathic connection to another person that leads to physical symptoms like those you describe. This tends to happen most often with people who are emotionally very close, such as mothers and their children. Since it sounds like you are closer to Scott’s mother than many daughters are to their own biological mothers, I don’t find it at all strange that you would share a strong psychic connection. It’s also possible that the two of you have shared other lifetimes in which you were biologically related, which would further strengthen your psychic connection this lifetime.

My sense is that you are a very physical person, and thus your strongest psychic sense may be clairsentience. This would tend to cause you to pick up telepathic information kinesthetically, by feeling it in your own body. I imagine that your intuition tends to speak to you through gut feelings, and that you tend to experience strong emotions in your body such as having butterflies in your stomach when you are nervous or getting a headache when you are stressed. Psychic mediums who are strongly clairsentient are those who tend to physically feel how a particular spirit passed, or feel other physical sensations as a form of metaphysical communication. To describe a spirit, they physically feel what it was like to BE that person. Thus they may say something like, “I feel like I am very tall but like I am bent over with roundedness in my upper back, and I feel like I have facial hair; it is tickling my lip.” By contrast, someone more clairvoyant might say, “I see a tall man who walks a bit hunched over who has a beard and mustache.” As you might imagine, being strongly clairsentient would encourage the sort of physical experience you describe.

While what you experienced was tangible in that you physically experienced her physical pain, you are also receiving other types of telepathic information without being conscious of it. Just as we all receive visual, auditory, kinesthetic and other information on a physical level, we all do the same on a metaphysical level, but when we are strongly skewed to one modality, we may not pay as much attention to the other information. I would bet that you are picking up on Scott’s mom’s thoughts and feelings without realizing that those thoughts and feelings are perhaps not your own, for this sort of exchange tends to be more subtle than physical sensations.

The closer we are to someone, the more likely we are to absorb their thoughts and feelings. Of course, the more sensitive we are, the more likely we are to be affected on this telepathic level as well. When you put two people who are very sensitive and very emotionally close together, all sorts of telepathic experiences tend to result.

If we have empathy for the person involved, it can be very difficult to separate our feelings from theirs even if we know that what we are feeling is not our own. For example, when my son was an adolescent, he went through a period during which he was angry, sullen and irritable. I would be perfectly happy but as soon as he got in the car, I would find my mood radically shifting. He didn’t even have to say a word for this to happen; it was like this dark, heavy cloud had invaded my aura. Even though I knew that he was the source of my suddenly dark thoughts and feelings, trying to avoid being affected by his bad mood was like having a passenger smoking a cigar in my car and trying to not inhale any of their smoke. It is fascinating to me that being in an enclosed space seems to be as powerful on a metaphysical level as it is on a physical level; if I were near my son in another setting besides the car, it was easier to separate my energy from his. While removing myself from his presence was most effective of all, in situations where someone we love is in great distress, we may pick up on how they feel even if they are thousands of miles away.

When we care about how other people feel, our auras are open to them. Instead of saying to ourselves, I don’t care how this person is feeling, I just want to feel good, we are constantly energetically checking on them much as we might do by phoning them to see how they are doing. It is this caring that bridges our energy fields. When we empathize with someone, we start to entrain to their energy and may be affected by their mood. To be invulnerable to the emotional or physical pain of someone we care about, we must become adept at setting our own tone and cultivate faith that everything happens for a good reason, so even if someone is struggling, we know that they are experiencing exactly what they need to experience in order to learn whatever they need to learn.

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I sometimes know when I am about to run into a particular person. It can be a friend, a celebrity or just someone I have recently seen in a paper. This is happening more often nowadays, and it really puzzles me. There are three specific occasions I’d like to share with you. A while ago I saw a man I’ve never met in the paper and thought it would be nice to see him in person. A few days later, I was in a cinema with my friends and saw him standing there. I felt no romantic attraction towards him but he did get my attention. Another day I was thinking about a celebrity I fancy and strangely enough, that same instant he came around the corner and walked past me. The third and most powerful experience happened last autumn when I was going back to my old home town and hoping to see this guy I have been in love with for ages. I am always hoping to see him but this time I knew for sure we would actually meet without having any formal plans to do so; I knew this weeks in advance. What is even more bizarre is he has shown almost no interest in me romantically, but I knew that if I dressed in a certain way he would like what he saw. There was no way of knowing that we would actually meet that night, yet he actually walked right into me at one point. More amazing still is how he looked me over from head to toe and commented on how good I looked – just as I had imagined! I felt like I could fly. What am I supposed to do with this knowledge that I am going to meet someone? In the case of this guy, I figured I should go talk to him, but should I try to get in contact with the strangers too? I always get a warm feeling when my vision has come true but I can’t help but wonder why I know that these particular yet seemingly random persons will cross my path. Does it mean that they will or should have some profound meaning in my life?

– Sofia

Dear Sofia:

I understand why you are lumping all of these experiences together, for they all involve encountering someone after having them pop into your mind. However, not all such experiences are created equal in terms of meaning. Assuming that these events must share some meaning is a bit like smelling something and assuming that the act of smelling something means the same thing in every case.

Let’s say that yesterday chocolate chip cookies popped into your mind and you so vividly thought about them that you could practically smell them. You even thought to yourself, Boy, it would be nice to have a cookie right now! Today you go to a party and Shazam! – there is a big platter of chocolate chip cookies. In this case, you manifested those cookies: you wanted them, you were easy about wanting them, and they showed up in your experience. This is sort of what happened with the first person you saw: he popped into your mind, you thought it would be nice to see him in person, and then he showed up.

Now let’s imagine that you’re walking down the street when suddenly you smell oatmeal cookies. No sooner do these cookies pop into your mind than you turn the corner and Shazam! – there is a bakery with the smell of oatmeal cookies wafting through the doorway. In this case, you sensed/smelled the cookies before they came into view. This is what happened with the celebrity who popped into your mind just before turning the corner. Just as a subtle scent may not register on a conscious level at first, a subtle psychic impression may not make much impact on us until the reason for it smacks into our awareness.

Now let’s imagine that you have for years been craving these special ginger cookies that your grandmother used to make. You love these cookies above all other cookies. In fact, you are thinking about opening a bakery so you can make and sell these special cookies; this feels like your destiny. The only problem is that Grandma is the only one who knows how to make them and no one has heard from her since she ran off with the circus years ago. You go back to where you last saw Grandma – your home town – and you start asking about her and looking for her but you can’t seem to find her. One day you get invited to a gathering and suddenly you just know Grandma will be there. Of course, all the while on a metaphysical level your entire being has been sending out a signal to the Universe: find Grandma! You go to the gathering and sure enough, there she is! This is what happened with the third guy you mention: you felt draw to him, you took action to find him by going to where he may be, you listened to your intuition, and everything happened just as you expected. In this case we have a mix of destiny, intuition and manifesting at work.

Here’s my point: Just because all three experiences involved the same psychic sense doesn’t mean they all share the same meaning. There is only one way to know when something meaningful is occurring, and that is to listen to your intuition. When something is meaningful, it grabs your attention and evokes a strong feeling. The reason you smell cookies sometimes is because you have a nose; the reason these precognitive events keep happening is because you have psychic senses. What you do about these perceptions depends on the feelings that accompany them.

In the first two instances, it doesn’t sound like anything meaningful was meant to happen; this is like smelling cookies and just going on your merry way. (You can’t eat cookies every time you smell them, after all!) The last instance is more powerful and evocative. You have strong feelings for this person and this powerful connection led your intuition to guide you in going to where you ended up meeting him. It even prepared you to create what you wanted by telling you how to dress.

Since not every cookie is meant for our personal consumption and not every psychic flash is something we need to ascribe great meaning to, the more psychic we become, the more important it is to develop a clear, conscious connection to Spirit so we can ask when we’re not sure if we’re supposed to do something about some psychic information. Since this is a very natural process, trusting our feelings is the main thing. When we have a strong feeling of attraction to someone, we’re meant to go toward that person; when we have a strong feeling of fear or repulsion toward someone, we’re meant to go away from them. When we don’t feel much of anything, we are free to do whatever we like, for what we choose probably won’t prove significant in the long run anyway.

Since it can be exhausting to consult our intuition on every event that happens to us, it’s helpful to consciously create what we want in our lives by working with the law of attraction. Then we can just relax and assume that if we need to know something, our intuition will get our attention. While this happens naturally, the more we consciously create a good working relationship with our inner knowing, the smoother things tend to go for us and the more magical our journey seems to become. Regular meditation is one way to create a clear channel to our inner knowing. It’s also helpful to regularly ask within, Is there something I need to know or do in this situation? Then just trust that if you need to talk to someone or do something in particular, you’ll feel compelled, nudged or inspired to do so.

Clarifying Confusing Psychic Terms

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I’ve been learning about mediums and psychics and am trying to figure out how their abilities differ. I’ve noticed that many psychics call themselves clairvoyant and have learned that clairvoyance means they can perceive events and information without the use of their ordinary senses. Here the term “see” is used in place of just “know” or “understand.” Other ESP abilities I have learned about include telepathy and precognition. I understand this to mean that a clairvoyant reads the energy of a client by perceiving the client in their mind without the use of their ordinary senses. Why would a psychic only define herself as a clairvoyant and not mention her precognitive or telepathic skills? As for mediums, most mental mediums generally describe their abilities in terms of the “clairs” – clairvoyance, clairsentience, clairaudience, etc. I don’t understand the difference between having a “clair” type of ability and being a medium. I have had some readings with mediums in which it seemed the medium was reading the energy of a spirit like a psychic would read the energy of a person, and others where it seemed the medium was channeling direct messages from the spirit. Can you clear these matters up?

Carolyn

Dear Carolyn:

I understand your confusion. While it may seem like clairvoyants use the term “see” as a synonym for “know” or “understand,” I believe they are saying HOW they tend to receive the psychic information they are in the process of understanding. Clairvoyance is my strongest psychic sense. When I say to a client, “I see you and your boyfriend traveling down a road, and in the future, this road splits and you take one path and he takes another,” I’m describing what I am literally being shown in my mind’s eye. I may then go on to explain what I “understand” from this by saying, “From this, I get that you and your boyfriend are going to eventually split up but it won’t be for a while yet.” Clairvoyance is thus not so much a psychic sense in and of itself as a style of psychic perception. If I were primarily clairaudient, I might instead say, “I’m hearing that you two are destined to split up, but I keep hearing January and the words turning point, so I feel this won’t be overtly set in motion until next January.”

If psychic ability were language itself (a way to communicate with other people, spirit guides, etc.), we might say that clairvoyance is a particular language like English. Other psychic languages like clairaudience, clairsentience, etc., are like French and Spanish. In order to clearly communicate with particular spirits, we have to be able to speak the same psychic language. Since spirit guides are far more adept at inter-dimensional communication, we might say for the sake of simplicity that they are fluent in all the languages. This means we just have to be fluent in one of the psychic languages to be able to consciously seek guidance from Spirit.

Keeping this in mind, you can perhaps now understand why a psychic would label herself clairvoyant and not go into her telepathic or precognitive skills. By saying that she is clairvoyant, she is saying that she speaks a certain psychic language. This means she can perform all sorts of psychic tasks in that language. If she is communicating telepathically or predicting the future, she will do so largely through mental pictures. A clairaudient can perform all the same psychic tasks but she will do so mainly through mental dialogue. Someone who is fluent can use their fluency to talk to other people and to write letters, emails and texts and perform all sorts of other communication tasks. Someone who speaks only French would do these same things in their own language. Further, you may speak a little bit of a foreign language, so if you are telepathically dialoguing with someone who speaks primarily that other language, you may able to piece what they are saying together much as you would if you were traveling in another country.

As for the difference between a psychic and a medium, the psychic speaks a particular language but lacks the equipment to use it to connect with other realms. This is like being fluent in English but not having a phone with which to call people far away. Usually, one progresses from psychic to medium, though sometimes mediums don’t realize they are psychic until spirit communication spontaneously occurs for some reason. (This reason is often the death of a loved one and a strong desire for a sign or message on either party’s part.) To follow through with our metaphor, this is like being able to speak a language like English or French being a prerequisite to being able to pick up a phone and use it to communicate with someone far away. (Hand gestures and body language won’t help you with this sort of communication; you must be able to communicate on a metaphysical level.)

You are right that mediums have different ways of relaying messages from spirits. When psychics are first learning spirit communication, they do tend to read the spirit much like they might read a person living in this dimension; since they have already developed that particular skill, it is what comes naturally. This enables them to visually describe the spirit if they are strongly clairvoyant, relay the spirit’s name or other information if they are primarily clairaudient, or describe the way the spirits feels if they are strongly clairsentient. (We see this in mediums who tune in to a spirit and say something like, “I feel pain in my chest; did this person die of a heart attack?”) Someone whose strongest psychic sense involves smell may relay that they smell cigar smoke or a certain perfume or other scent when tuning in to a particular spirit.

Of course, the more a psychic develops her various psychic senses (learns other languages), the more she will be able to access psychic information from a variety of angles and thus get a clearer sense of what she is perceiving. Being “multi-lingual” also means she will be able to connect with a wider number of spirits. If both the medium and the spirit are highly visual, communication will take place in a visual way. If one is visual and the other auditory, communication may be difficult. If the medium is able to see, hear and feel metaphysical information, she will be able to communicate with spirits who speak any of these telepathic languages. (Not speaking the same language is a key reason why a medium may not be able to clearly connect with a certain spirit.)

The more skilled a psychic becomes at spirit communication, the better she will get at linking with the spirit and allowing the spirit to channel messages through her instead of reaching for information and then trying to interpret what is perceived. This sort of channeling requires a profound shift in vibration and a deep, unbroken trance state; in order to maintain that state, the use of one’s psychic senses must be natural and easy. Most mediums who are able to do this are also particularly adept at clairaudience, which is why they are able to “hear” what the spirit wants to say and verbally relay that. These are some of the various reasons that not all mediums work in the same way or produce the same types of readings.

Since all of these processes are subtle and extraordinary, it is hard to describe them in words. I hope the above has cleared up some of your confusion!

Premonitions of Death

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I’m writing to you about a recent experience that has shaken me to the core. It began when I dreamed that my best friend died in an earthquake. In the dream, we had talked about going to South America together, but I couldn’t get off of work to go so she went by herself. I then saw on the news that there had been an earthquake where she was. I saw film of buildings falling and the earth rising up and turning things upside down. People were running in the streets, panicked and crying. Then I saw her picture on the news as one of those who had been killed. I woke up from this dream badly shaken. When I saw her the next day, I told her about it, and we had this intense moment when she looked in my eyes and said, “You know I love you too much to ever really leave you!” The strange thing is that we both teared up at the thought, and spent quite a while talking about our friendship and how much it has meant to us both over the years. Eventually, we started to laugh at how somber and silly we were being, dried our tears, and changed the subject. That was the last time I saw her. Five days later, she was killed in a car accident. She was 44 years old. In addition to the devastation of losing her, I am reeling because I am wondering why I had that dream and if I was supposed to somehow warn her or prevent her death. Why do you think I had this dream? Thank you so much.

Diane

Dear Diane

My heart goes out to you. I have heard many similar stories over the years and had a very moving experience like this of my own. In my experience, dreams and premonitions of loved ones dying are not usually preventive warnings but rather profound gifts meant to comfort and reassure us that there is a higher plan at work.

I’m going to share the most precious spiritual experience I’ve ever had with you here. I almost never talk or write about this simply because it is so sacred to me. This is also the experience that first made me wake up to the truth that there is more to “reality” than can be perceived with our physical senses.

At the time this happened, I had been dating my first love, Todd, for several years. The first time we met, we had both had that karmic feeling of encountering someone already deeply familiar to us, of time stopping and something profoundly important taking place. Though we were young, we just knew we were meant to be together. Thus began a long and beautiful romance.

Fast forward a couple of years to the last night I saw him. He had moved several hours away with his family, so I only got to see him about once a month when he came to visit me. The last night I saw him, the whole world seemed strange. We spent hours talking about our relationship. We were both overcome with feelings of grief though there was no apparent reason for us to feel that way. It felt like we were breaking up, but we weren’t. We were both deeply confused by this since we were not arguing or upset with each other or anything like that. He felt the same way, and we both spent a lot of time crying for no apparent reason.

I will never forget the last moments I spent with him. Since he had come in on the train, I was driving that night. When I dropped him off at his sister’s house where he was staying, he opened the passenger seat and slid out, all the while holding my hand. Though he was out of the car, he wouldn’t or couldn’t let go of me. Ever so slowly our hands began to slip apart. When our fingers at last separated, it felt like something had been severed; if that feeling had a sound, it would have been that of a door slamming shut.

I was overcome with confusion and feelings of grief and exhausted from feeling that way. I told myself we were being crazy, and I forced myself to put the car in reverse and back out of the driveway. I can still see him standing there, looking at me pull away. His eyes were telling me not to go; my eyes were telling him I didn’t know what else to do.

That was the last time I saw him, for two days later he died suddenly. While there were many other amazing things that happened after he died that totally rocked my concept of reality, the first thing that hit me was how that last night we had somehow known that we would not be seeing each other again. We weren’t breaking up; we were separating for who knows how long. There was absolutely no rational way for us to have known that, however.

Words can’t convey how much this experience means to me and how much it changed me. Suddenly I knew without a doubt that there must be a higher plan. Though he was only 18 years old, for some reason, he was destined to die when he did. I still tear up when I think about this, not so much because I miss him still, but because I feel so blessed to have had this experience and to know that death isn’t random and meaningless. I see so much beauty in this experience. I don’t know who blessed me with it – if it was him or God or a spirit guide or what. I don’t even know why I was blessed with it, though it certainly launched me on a spiritual quest, and is at the foundation of what has become an amazing career. I just know that it makes me feel profoundly loved and cared for on a deep soul level; it makes me feel part of something greater than anything I’ve known in the physical world.

I’ve shared this story with you because I feel this is what you’ve experienced yourself. Your earthquake dream was designed to bring you peace after your friend died. It was something you could look back to as a sign or message that her death was destined to happen. In the dream, she was going to a faraway place. You couldn’t go with her because you still have work to do here on Earth. The earthquake was symbolic of your world being turned upside down. I feel this represents both the loss of your friend and your whole spiritual belief system and understanding of the nature of life and death.

That last tearful conversation you had with your friend was your opportunity to say goodbye and express how much you loved each other. It was the conversation so many people long to have with someone they have lost; you got to have it before your friend died. It even included her telling you that she loves you too much to ever really leave you, by which she perhaps meant that she will always be with you on some level. This was a tremendous gift; I hope it brings you comfort and reassurance that your friend’s passing was no accident but rather part of a divine plan.

Summoning Angels to Help Spirits Cross Over

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I have been working with Angels to perform spirit clearances. I have done this three or four times so far with their help, and I am comforted by their presence. My automatic writing suggests that in some instances, I can simply talk the spirits over as I naturally know where the gates of light are. What are your thoughts? Should I always call the Angels to assist or is there another way? Since I’m new to this topic, I would greatly appreciate your thoughts.

E.

Dear E.:

First, I encourage everyone interested in spirit rescue work to watch out for assumptions. For example, just because we are able to perceive a spirit doesn’t mean that spirit is earthbound. Every living person is unique and in a unique situation, and the same is true of spirits. It is never wise to push our help upon others whether they are living here or in another dimension. I mention this because I’ve met people who get so excited about finding “ghosts” and helping them cross over that they assume every disembodied presence is in dire need of assistance. There are both human and non-human beings living happily in other dimensions, so just because we can perceive a metaphysical being doesn’t mean it is lost or in need of guidance. A beginner’s mind is perhaps the most important thing we can carry with us into such situations, for this will keep us asking questions instead of leaping to conclusions, which will enable us to feel our way to the best approach.

Many readers are no doubt wondering why angels and other spiritual helpers can’t handle such matters on their own. Apparently, the problem is that spirits lingering close to the earth plane can no more perceive these higher beings than most living people can. Their consciousness remains as it was when they were living, so earthbound spirits continue to perceive the living but are oblivious to spiritual beings. The goal is to help these spirits shift into a higher state of vibration and consciousness. To answer your question, I think calling upon angels for help is a very wise thing to do; it certainly can’t hurt, and in many cases will prove powerful and helpful for all involved.

There are all sorts of reasons a spirit may not cross over into the afterlife when leaving this world, so the first thing to do is try to determine what the hang-up may be. Since you are able to talk to these spirits, this should be relatively easy for you. Being capable of two-way communication is helpful both in terms of figuring out what to do and knowing if your efforts have been successful. It’s a bit like trying to help a foreign immigrant get settled in a new land; it helps if both parties are able to hear and understand each other.

Some souls get stuck close to earth simply because they don’t realize they are dead. This tends to happen when people die suddenly and without warning. I imagine this state is much like what we experience when we dream at night; most of us “wake up” in a dream without any thought about the fact that our dream body is not the same body that is lying in our bed, sleeping. Here, helping a lost spirit is like approaching them in a dream and saying, “I realize you probably don’t know this, but you are actually dreaming right now and it’s time to wake up! Go that way to get to where you’re supposed to be.” If we bring angels in, the living helper can simply say, “If you look behind you, you will find an angel who is here to help you.” Once the spirit turns and sees the angel, the angel can take it from there.

Of course, not all spirit rescues are this easy or straightforward. If the spirit is mired in anger, fear, grief or other heavy emotions, its vibration will be too low to perceive the higher beings there to help. Here the job of the living is to help the spirit gain a higher perspective on their situation so that their vibration will rise to where they can let go of the past and open up to whatever comes next.

In this category we have the growing number of spirits who have no idea what to expect when they die. (Of course, this is preferable to when many people died in fear that they were going straight to an eternal punishment in hell.) When people expect there to be “nothing” when they die, that is what they tend to experience. This can lead to a period of limbo and confusion. I imagine this is like waking up in a hospital bed, feeling woozy and out of it, not knowing where you are, how you got there, or what you’re supposed to do next. Many spirits who find themselves in this position will wait for someone to come along whom they can ask for guidance. Since they can perceive the living but not higher beings, but most of the living can’t perceive them, this can prove to be a long wait. They may ask the living for help and become more confused when the living don’t seem to be able to perceive them. Some of these spirits may know or begin to suspect they have died but still not know what to do or where to go. If they had little religious experience when alive, the idea of “praying” for help may not even occur to them.

These spirits tend to linger in familiar places or near familiar people, and become excited when they encounter someone who can perceive them. Here the best thing is to explain to them that there is an afterlife, that there is nothing to fear, and that they have only to start to look for a light or tunnel and go through it to escape from the limbo they’re in. You can also suggest that they pray for help from whatever higher power they are most open to, or that they call to mind a loved one who preceded them in death and look around for that individual. If they are mired in strong negative emotions, you may have to counsel them just as you would the living. By helping them find more positive thoughts and feelings, they will become more able to perceive higher beings, let go of the past, and move on.

Some earthbound spirits have unfinished business and are looking for someone who can help them complete it. Many are simply waiting to get an important message through to the living. Others refuse to leave a particular loved one, preferring to wait until that person dies so they can cross over with them. You may be able to convince some that they can move on and come back when it’s time for the one they’re waiting for to pass, but some will refuse to go. We have to respect the free will of these spirits like we do the free will of living people.

Many earthbound spirits are stuck due to physical addictions. Just as this is one of the hardest things to “treat” in the living, it’s one of the hardest things to work through with a spirit. Since each individual has to find the strength to overcome addictions on their own, usually the best you can do is help a living individual free themselves from such a spirit, knowing all the while that the spirit will probably just find someone else to try to feed its addiction through.

Finally, there are those spirits who are so dark and “evil” that they are blind to the light and too heavy in vibration to rise to higher realms. These dark souls have no more interest in going “into the light” than they had in doing good deeds when they were alive. We can pray for and protect ourselves from these spirits, but like the worst criminals amongst the living, most of them don’t share our desire for love, peace and harmony.

Psychic Interference

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I’ve been working on psychic development for more than ten years and been doing some psychic reading work for the past three years or so. Most of the time, everything goes great; now and then, however, I feel psychically blocked. I’m wondering if you’ve ever experienced psychic interference like this and how I can work through it.

Sandy

Dear Sandy:

I think all psychics experience this sometimes; I know I certainly do. If psychic work was painting, I think it would be more like creating a masterpiece than covering walls with a certain color. Like other artistic talents, psychic abilities can be unpredictable and temperamental. After many years of involvement in psychic realms, tuning in can begin to seem pretty mundane, but we must remember that we’re trying to achieve things most of the world would deem to be magical if not downright miraculous.

There is a difference between being temporarily blocked and going through a period during which you just can’t connect the way you used to. Occasional blocks are common and usually short-lived; they typically last for just a few hours or a single day. There are all sorts of reasons temporary blocks come up, and many easy ways to work through them.

For example, I know many psychics who report that they find it hard to connect when the weather is gray. Cloudy days tend to bring our mood down, which makes it harder to achieve a high vibration. Since gray days tend to bring down the mood and energy of everyone around us, psychically sensitive individuals can find it especially difficult to achieve a high vibration at these times. Of course, the more masterful we become at controlling our own vibration, the less outside factors will influence us and our abilities.

Similarly, being tired, physically unwell, or emotionally upset can really mess with our psychic abilities. Again, it takes a lot of focus and energy to achieve the high vibration of psychic clarity, so if we’re low on energy, we’re in for a struggle. Negative emotions also bring our vibration down, so unless we know how to put our own feelings aside, any personal upsets can prevent us from psychically tuning in.

Doubt and fear are formidable barriers to clear-seeing, especially fear of failure or being wrong in our psychic impressions. Even psychics who have many years of success behind them sometimes get anxious. If you are reading for someone and you are worried about impressing them or otherwise attached to the result, you will grow anxious, sink into ego, and find it impossible to connect. Similarly, if you’re reading on a subject that seems daunting, you can block yourself with anxiety. This is why general spiritual development is such an essential foundation for psychic ability: The more we embody peace and faith, the less likely we are to be mired down in doubts, fears, and other ego-driven feelings.

It is important to wait until we have a “green light” feeling before pushing forward with psychic work. While I trust that anyone who comes to me comes for a good reason, there are times when I feel I have to do a lot of work in advance in order to align a positive level of experience. There are all sorts of reasons this may happen. One common one is when people come to me with an agenda regarding what they want to hear and are not really open to hearing anything but that. Along the same lines, I often have clients refer their partners, family members and close friends to me. When they all start asking about each other, things get pretty tricky. The same is true when someone wants me to bring through information about a third party. Everyone who strives to fulfill higher spiritual values first and foremost will be prevented from accessing psychic information if doing so would not be for the good of all involved. In this case, being blocked is a good thing, for it keeps us from stumbling forward without thinking things through.

Most psychics will also go through longer periods when their psychic abilities just don’t seem to be working so well. Usually, they have simply fallen into some bad habits or fallen out of the good habits that led them to reliable psychic ability in the first place. For example, I’ve known psychics who engaged in all sorts of spiritual practices in order to awaken their abilities, but then over time, become a bit complacent. Maintaining a lifestyle conducive to regular psychic work can be difficult in the modern world. When our good spiritual habits fell away, our abilities may follow suit.

Since psychic work is a highly specialized art form, it’s not something that can be rushed or thrown together; it must be carefully prepared for and aligned. Just as athletes warm up, stretch, and do all sorts of other things to be able to perform well, psychics have to engage in certain processes in order to be able to do what they do. Fortunately, just like training the body, we have only to return to the spiritual practices that work for us to quickly get psychically “back in shape.”

While every psychic is different, when I feel my ability starting to slip, I know to pull back from worldly endeavors and engage in more yoga and meditation. It also helps to read spiritual books and study esoteric teachings. While yoga and meditation are time-honored traditions, it’s important for you to find what works for you.

I’ve known many a psychic who felt blocked from using their abilities and could not figure out why until they realized that they were ignoring their own intuition for some reason. In essence, they had turned the volume all the way down on their intuition because they didn’t want to hear what it was trying to tell them. If your intuition has been telling you that you need to get out of your marriage, quit your job, or make some other big change in your life that you are afraid to make, you may have blocked it from speaking to you without realizing it.

Finally, it often happens that longer periods of psychic interference precede new spiritual breakthroughs. We all get in ruts sometimes, and if we aren’t paying keen attention and responding to Spirit’s guidance, we can be blocked from what we’ve been doing in order to wake up and try something else so that we can start moving forward again. When what we used to do stops working for us, we become motivated to explore new options and possibilities. It thus often happens that psychic lulls are followed by periods of high activity in which we are able to use our psychic abilities in new or more powerful ways.

When we find ourselves blocked from doing something psychic in particular, it’s always wise to step back and reach for a connection with our spirit guides. Our guides are always there for us, so if we have trouble connecting with them, we should look for both the problem and its remedy within. The first thing I would do is engage in some yoga and deep meditation while reaching for a high vibration in order to reconnect to Spirit. Once our connection to our guides is back in place, we can simply ask Spirit to help us figure out what’s happening with our abilities and what we need to know in order to get past troublesome blocks.
