Three Kisses Goodbye

Dear Soul Arcanum:

My brother-in-law in New Jersey died at home of a fatal heart attack on June 17. We have a strong bond: I am very dear to him and he has been very open about that with everyone in the family. He would always say that I am his favorite sister-in-law. A few days after he died, I believe I had an eerie encounter with him. (By the way, I am working in Qatar.) I was nearly asleep around 1:30 a.m. My eyes were closed when I felt something like a magnet pinning my body down, and an unexplainable feeling emanating from my body. Then I felt a kiss being planted on my head three times. I could even feel the breathing and my right hand was being caressed at the same time. I was so scared, I just kept my eyes shut and prayed the Lord’s Prayer, and then I felt my body being released. I strongly felt that it was my brother-in-law saying goodbye to me. I called up my sister (his wife) and my parents and really cried, as this had frightened me so much. Am I correct in my assumption that it was really him? I have been through a lot, and my sister told me that he was always very concerned about my well-being.
Evelyn

Dear Evelyn:

Your letter reminded that we can hear all sorts of stories about spiritual experiences, but we won’t begin to truly believe until we have our own personal encounter – and that’s how it should be. Once we DO have our own experience, however, it’s imperative that we trust in our own perceptions.

I believe that what you experienced was exactly what you think it was: a visit from your beloved brother-in-law at the time of his death. This sort of thing is surprisingly common. In fact, it’s estimated that between 20 – 40% of people in the U.S. have had personal spontaneous contact from a deceased loved one. For more information, check out the work of Bill and Judy Guggenheim or the After Death Communication Research Foundation.

That he visited at the time he was leaving this world makes sense, for often spirits will visit someone they loved in order to say good-bye or let them know that they have died. Physical distance is no obstacle: many people have been halfway around the world from the dying person who visited them.

Interestingly, I’ve had your question slated for publication for about a month now, yet just a few days ago a friend of mine experienced something similar. Her beloved uncle was dying from cancer but he was expected to live for another day or two. She was at home when suddenly books flew off the shelf, two bedroom doors slammed, and her kitchen light turned on and then off again. She began to talk out loud to her uncle, asking if that was him. That’s when her phone rang: it was family calling to tell her that her uncle had just passed.

There are many ways that spirits may appear after their deaths. I believe that these forms are determined by a combination of the proclivities of the spirit and the living person. For example, a spirit who was very physical in life may make his presence known through a touch, as your brother-in-law did. Someone who was very auditory may be heard to speak either out loud or telepathically, while someone who was very visual may be perceived as an apparition.

At the same time, those who perceive spirits will experience visitations in their own way. Of course, it is generally those who are psychically open and sensitive who have such experiences to begin with. Sometimes spirits target those who are sensitive right off the bat, while other times spirits try to come through to all their loved ones but quickly figure out that some people are able to perceive them while others are oblivious to their presence. They then naturally focus on the sensitive ones in hopes of getting a message through to the whole gang.

Some encounters are entirely visual; spirits may even try to communicate a message through sign language. Similarly, some visits are just auditory: a voice heard is out loud or in one’s head. Other experiences are kinesthetic in that one feels a presence or a touch. Many visits are combinations of the various psychic senses. For example, someone may feel a pat on the leg and hear the spirit’s voice in her head, while another may smell the spirit’s favorite cologne and sense their presence.

It doesn’t surprise me one bit that you saw your brother-in-law while you were falling asleep. Being in a trancelike state greatly facilitates spirit communication because we’re not focused on the physical dimension and our minds are awake but quiet and receptive. I believe this is why so many visitations involve spirits standing at the foot of the bed: It’s not that spirits want to scare us in the middle of the night, but rather that we are more able to perceive them when we’re sleepy.

Just as there are many ways spirits can communicate, there are many reasons they may do so as well. Spirits who visit around the time of their deaths may be trying to say good-bye, inform us of their passing, or in the case of murder victims, try to let someone know what happened so that justice can be served. Usually, spirits just want us to know that they are okay: that we needn’t worry about them; that they are happy where they are; that they feel no more pain or suffering; and that they want us to be happy and go on with our lives. Sometimes spirits have information to relay, such as where hidden money, important papers or other treasures can be found.

When spirits visit a number of years after they died, they may be trying to give us advice or warn us of danger. For example, grandparents have been known to warn parents that a baby is choking or that a child is in trouble. Spirits have warned people that the house was on fire, that they shouldn’t go on a certain trip, or that they should lock their doors and windows to protect themselves from a prowler.

Before closing, I must mention that I feel you and your brother-in-law have a deep karmic bond. I’m sure you two were close because you shared a lot of love in past lives. Since we incarnate with the same souls over and over again, it can be fascinating to study family dynamics. When two family members share an inexplicably close bond, it’s often because they grew close in other lifetimes. This would make your brother-in-law a key member of your soul family – perhaps much more important to you on a soul level than either of you consciously realized – so it’s understandable that he would come to say goodbye to you.

This visit was a great gift for you and the rest of the family above and beyond the love that was conveyed. It is personal experiences like this that break open people’s belief systems and launch them on conscious spiritual journeys. As there is nothing more important or rewarding than that, I urge you to give thanks for his visit, and encourage you to explore the big questions it has raised for you. Also, as you move forward on this new spiritual adventure, please trust your own perceptions and intuitions whether they jibe with what you’ve been taught is real and possible or not.

Still Seeking Peace with Parents’ Deaths

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

My mother died of cancer and about one year later, my dad committed suicide. My mother knew she was going to die so she had special talks with all her children. In my conversation with her, I asked her to please find a way to come visit me in my dreams or some other way from the dead. She said she would. I only had one dream about her. I was sitting at my kitchen table with a couple of friends and she appeared in the doorway. I turned and yelled Mom! and went to get up to hug her and she disappeared. As for my father, he died of a drug overdose. In the only dream I had about him, he was chasing me with a drug needle, saying This is your life now. Please help me understand all of this. Why won’t my mom won’t come to see me and talk to me like in the stories I’ve read at Soul Arcanum? Why would my dad say and do the things he did to me in my dream? I stood by both my parents until the end, never missing a doctor’s appointment or a chance to get my dad help for his pain. All he did when he was alive was make my life a living hell and make up rumors about me to feed his drug habit. Please help me. Thanks in advance!
Karen

Dear Karen:

Since it seems your parents were very different people and you had unique relationships with each of them, I think we should approach these dreams separately.

First it’s important to recognize and give thanks that your mother did come to you as promised. It may not have been exactly what you were hoping for, but she did show up in a dream and try to connect with you, and you did remember the experience.

My dad died a couple of years ago, after he and my mother had enjoyed many decades of a really beautiful marriage. One would think that she would have had all sorts of experiences with my dad after he passed, but she hasn’t had a single one that I would call really obvious or moving. She says that she sometimes hears his voice in her head, telling her what she should do about this or that problem, and that a couple of times, she has gotten the feeling that a bird outside the window was a sign from him, but she’s not had any vivid visits from him either when awake or dreaming.

I, however, have had outright visits, dreams, signs – you name it – from my dad. He even telephoned me on my birthday! This is not because he loved me more than he loved her or the rest of the family. Spirit communication is a two-way street, and there are many factors that can influence its success.

Following are some things to consider that may be affecting this situation:

First, people who die after long illnesses often need some time to heal and recover on the other side. They may make an all-out effort to come to us at least once after they’ve died to let us know they’re okay or to fulfill a promise, like your mother did, but then move on to what they need to do next. Often it’s a good sign when spirits don’t endlessly visit us, for it means they’ve moved on and are doing what they need to be doing on the other side.

It can take a great deal of time and effort for spirits to reach us in a way that most people can perceive it. It’s much like learning how to consciously communicate with spirits is for us: we could devote all kinds of time and energy to this goal and still find the results we desire elusive. In other words, I think we should assume that inter-dimensional communication is just as tricky to affect from the spirit world as it is from the physical.

Our state of mind definitely affects spirit communication. You have obviously gone through a great deal with all of this. You didn’t mention how long it has been since these deaths, but even if it’s been a while, you’re clearly still in some turmoil about it all, which would prevent conscious contact with spirits due to a low vibration.

Further, just as some people are more adept at spirit communication, some spirits are too. If the living person or the spirit is highly sensitive and spiritual in nature, contact is far more likely. If both parties are highly sensitive, then amazing things can happen. For example, the first spirit I had lots of contact with was my grandmother. She was a very spiritual sort of person, and we had a deep bond. I believe that because we were very close and because we were both very open and sensitive, it was easy for us to connect.

The more we evolve and the higher our vibration, the greater our power over our own reality and the greater our freedom to travel between spiritual realms, whether we’re on this side or living in another dimension.

In addition to all of the above, we often have dreams of loved ones in Spirit that we don’t remember. Even people who vividly remember their dreams every night may block out visits with loved ones in Spirit if there are unresolved feelings or issues that they’re not ready to face yet. It’s ironic, but the more you heal these relationships and work through your grief, the easier it will be for you to consciously connect.

What I want to emphasize most is the truth that just because you don’t get signs or visits from a particular spirit, that doesn’t mean that the spirit isn’t trying, doesn’t love you, or isn’t okay. I know my dad has tried to get through to my mom, but she just isn’t ready yet. In fact, she admitted that she both wants to hear from him, and is kind of freaked out about the whole idea. This inner conflict explains why she hasn’t had conscious experiences of him since his passing.

As for your father, it sounds to me like two things may be happening here:

First, addicts tend to remain earthbound. It sounds like your dad just hasn’t changed much since he died: he’s still struggling with addiction, and he didn’t instantly become angelic upon crossing over. It even sounds like he may be trying to feed his addiction through you – hence the dream of him chasing you with a needle.

You’re wise to realize that many times when our loved ones cross over, if they have issues that keep them earthbound like alcohol or drug addiction, they will attach to someone and try to continue to drink or get high through them. So someone with a food addiction may latch onto another family member who also has food issues, or at least has a weakness in that area. They don’t intend to harm us, mind you – but just like when they were living, they are too caught up in their own needs to act in a more loving, responsible way.

Until these spirits conquer their addictions, they can’t cross over, for they just keep fixating on the physical pleasures they crave. Whether they want to cross over or not, however, you can release them from your own energy and protect yourself from further attachment. (Research spirit releasement for more information on how to do this.)

This dream of your dad may also simply reflect that you are processing some unresolved feelings and issues you have about your relationship with him. Clearly there is a lot of pain and disappointment left over from this relationship that you have yet to heal, so the dream may not have been a true visit from him but instead be a reflection of your own inner turmoil.

I encourage you to pray for peace and healing for yourself and your father. Visualize him full of light, free from addiction, and surrounded by angels helping him to learn, grow and heal in the afterlife. You can pray for your mother too, and also pray to have the sort of healing experiences you crave with both of your departed parents. If you focus on this and ask for it with a sincere heart, I have faith that you will be guided to peace and fulfillment in the perfect way and time for you.

Hallucinations of the Dying

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

My 77-year-old mother has been in the ICU for 10 days following cardiac surgery. It took three days for her to come out of anesthesia. Two days ago, she started to hallucinate. Her fourth floor room looks out onto other buildings on the hospital grounds, but she sees cars in driveways and people going in and out of the houses and other things that no one else can see. The most interesting thing is that she is seeing people in her room: a woman with a plate of scones, a man in the chair and children. The children are constantly in her room and she reports that they get along very well. The nurses blame the hallucinations on ICU psychosis. While this explanation sounds plausible, my mother is not the only senior I know who sees people I don’t see. My grandmother often saw departed family members when she was sick, and my mother-in-law saw little people around her a week before she died. My research revealed that many elders see little people or children. Could it be coincidental that all these seniors are having the same hallucinations?
Becky

Dear Becky:

People who are in altered states of consciousness all see the same sorts of things because they are seeing into other dimensions. Sometimes this can be sparked by physical trauma or recreational drug use, but it happens naturally just after we’re born and when we’re close to death, for we are then closer to other dimensions of experience.

Further, when we’re really sick or dying, we aren’t locked into rational thought; in fact, when we’re under great stress like this, we often can’t think straight – we’re highly emotional and perhaps even out of our minds. When we’re in this primal state of consciousness, we can more readily see beyond the physical dimension.

As for why so many seriously ill and/or elderly people may be seeing what you call children, to me it seems fairly obvious that they are seeing beings in another dimension. While they could be spirits, most likely they are elves, gnomes, fairies, pixies or little people. It’s believed that these beings exist in dimensions right next to ours, and this is why various people have spotted them throughout history. Little people fill our folklore and fascinate us because we have encountered them many times, though usually not on a conscious level.

The pattern you describe with your mother is actually very common when patients are recovering from surgery or life threatening illnesses or injuries. In fact, as your nurse tried to explain, there is even a term for it: ICU psychosis. However, these people aren’t hallucinating – by which I mean that they aren’t seeing things that aren’t really there – they’re simply tuning in to another dimension because they are in an altered state of consciousness.

Modern medicine attributes this so-called psychotic break to the unusual stressors encountered in the ICU setting. For example, people in the ICU tend to be sleep-deprived and disoriented due to a lack of awareness of the date or time. They are under great stress and are often heavily medicated. In my view, these are indeed the stimuli at work, but that doesn’t mean that what they are perceiving isn’t real – it’s just not real in this dimension. These stimuli cause an altered state of consciousness and dissociation from the physical, and this is what causes them to see into other dimensions.

There is another related phenomenon known as sundowning in nursing homes. In addition to being elderly (and relatively close to death), this is most likely caused by irregular sleep patterns, which alter one’s state of consciousness. The only way for me to induce out of body experiences was to get drunk on sleep. I would sleep a whole night through and then go back to bed and force myself to lie there and try to fall asleep even though I wasn’t tired. In this state, our minds will tend to stay awake even as we force our bodies to rest, and when that happens, we begin to perceive all sorts of stuff we normally can’t. Simply prolonging the state of drowsiness to unusual lengths of time tends to produce similar experiences, and in most nursing homes and ICU’s, the patients spend an unusual amount of time sleeping and lying in bed.

If people experiencing this sort of thing are afraid for one reason or another, they may become very agitated, paranoid or aggressive, for what they tune into will tend to be of a negative nature. If they are in a positive frame of mind and feeling peaceful or generally have a higher vibration, they may see angels, sweet little people, loved ones in Spirit, etc.

The same thing happens with Alzheimer’s patients and those suffering from dementia. For example, when my brilliant grandfather was quite old and suffering from Alzheimer’s, he would frequently talk about all the things that were happening that none of the rest of us could see. He was quite frustrated because the aliens landing on the roof were perfectly real to him, and when we tried to reassure him that there were no aliens, he just figured we didn’t know what we were talking about. Many Alzheimer’s patients tune in to a dimension we would call the past, and mentally live in that dimension or skip from one to another.

A week or so before my father died, he began to have similar experiences. He talked in particular about seeing elves or dwarf coming out of the fireplace, which didn’t seem to bother him much, but he also talked about seeing a big black monstrous entity. His eyes would get wild with fear as he asked repeatedly, Who is that big black f-cker in the corner? or warned the family to Look out for that big black f-cker in the corner! I presume that he was seeing a demon, for demons are big and black and tend to enter rooms in corners and then hulk or crouch there. (I wasn’t present when these events were occurring, unfortunately, so I couldn’t try to look clairvoyantly for what was going on.)

Not only will great fear attract a demon, but many people believe that demons are like astral vultures in that they will try to feed off of or grab onto the souls of people in weakened or vulnerable states. This is why many people who are near death in some way have reported seeing demon-like entities. People of great faith aren’t spiritually weakened when near death, so they aren’t disturbed by dark forces. When someone who has no strong spiritual beliefs or faith is facing death, they are naturally thrown into great spiritual tumult and can be easy prey for lower astral entities.

I also believe that when we are dying, we attract attention in other dimensions much as the birth of a child attracts attention here. When a baby is born, it’s greeted by loved ones it knew before in its life in the spirit world: its parents died there to be born here before them. It also encounters strange beings wearing masks and gloves who help it transition into this world. When a person dies, the process reverses in that they are greeted on the other side by loved ones who have gone before them along with other helpers who facilitate their transition.

When someone is about to die, I imagine there is just as much interest on the other side as there is interest in a new birth here, so beings are drawn to come and check that person out. It’s also possible that being between life and death places us in a strange twilight zone, and when we show up in that zone consciously, the beings there naturally show an interest in us.

Where is the Astral World?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I’ve gotten interested in astral projection, and I’m planning on trying it sometime soon, but first I have a few questions. Is astral projection traveling into a spirit world like the afterlife? Where are you when you’re out of your body? If I were to try it with my friends, would we be able to meet up somewhere?
– Christine

Dear Christine:

Naturally, no one can give you definitive answers on the nature of metaphysical reality, so what I offer you here is based on what I’ve learned from others and experienced from projecting myself.

First, when we talk about other dimensions like the astral plane, using the term “where” is rather confusing. Instead of picturing these dimensions in some other place, we might imagine them as a different form of the space we are already familiar with.

Let’s say that the physical world is like ice, and when we raise the vibration/temperature of that ice, it melts and becomes water. It’s now fluid and we can see through it, though from the right angle, we can perceive its presence. This water is a bit like the etheric plane, which is one vibrational step above the physical.

When we heat the water further, it becomes a cloud of steam. It’s still there, but is now invisible to us. Where the water just pooled on the floor and the ice was stuck in one spot, the steam can travel to the ceiling and the highest, farthest corners of the room.

This is one way to conceptualize the etheric and astral planes, which are dimensions higher in vibration than the physical. They exist right here, only at a higher vibration. (There are higher planes than the etheric and astral, but for now, let’s stick with these three.)

Just as we have a physical body in the physical plane, we subtle bodies that exist in other planes. One step higher than the physical is our etheric body, and one step higher than that is our astral body. (These subtle bodies can be seen in our auras.)

The etheric plane is so close to the physical that those of us who generally have a high vibration are often aware of it. For example, whenever we catch a glimpse of a spirit in our peripheral vision or see an aura, we are perceiving things with our etheric eyes. This is why to see auras, we can’t be focused on both the person and their aura. When one is in focus, the other is out of focus because we are shifting our consciousness between our physical body and our etheric body.

Most of the time, what we call astral projection is actually etheric projection. When we project etherically, we become like the water mentioned above: we remain in the physical plane but step outside ourselves. Like water melting off of ice, we can look back at our bodies from a new perspective.

During etheric projection we seem to be in the physical reality we’re familiar with. For example, if we project while in our bedroom, we may separate from our body to find ourselves hovering above our body on the bed. We tend to feel very restricted during etheric projection, like we have to remain very close to our bodies. If we do travel, we won’t go far. We may feel lighter than we do physically, but still not be able to fly around like we’re weightless. This is sort of like being in a state between water and steam – if we try to go too far, we condense on surfaces and become water again.

Astral projection involves the transfer of our consciousness beyond the etheric to our astral body. This is much more difficult because it requires us to raise our consciousness to a higher vibration. (The higher the metaphysical dimension, the higher we must raise our consciousness to explore it.)

The astral may have many similarities to physical reality, but it can also seem wild and different. We are actually in the astral plane when we dream every night, so we are all quite familiar with the amazing and unusual things that can happen in this realm.

Yes, this does mean that we all project into the astral every night. In fact, while we’re sleeping, our consciousness shifts into our etheric bodies so we can recharge our life force energy. We’re sort of like ipods that can only run for so long before they need to be recharged; after we’ve played for hours, we have to plug back into Source.

After we’ve soaked up a good amount of energy via sleep, we can rise a bit higher in vibration and wander off in our astral bodies to have adventures. This is why REM activity picks up so much in the early morning hours: we’re charged up from all that deep sleep and ready for action.

The difference between a regular dream and astral projection is how conscious we are during the experience. If we purposefully leave our bodies to travel in the astral, we call it astral projection. If we remain conscious that we are out of our bodies and thus maintain some control over the experience, that’s astral projection. Obviously, this is not the case during regular dreams. In fact, experienced astral projectors have reported being in the astral and witnessing dreamers play out dream scenes, oblivious to the fact that they are dreaming.

The astral is indeed where many spirits reside, at least for a while. It may even be that spirits who have moved beyond the astral can visit with us there. Many people encounter loved ones in Spirit in their dreams, and some very experienced astral projectors purposefully leave their bodies to visit with the spirits of friends and family on a regular basis.

As for meeting up with friends who are also projecting, controlling where you go while out of the body can be both very tricky and very easy depending on various factors.

Making this happen via will power takes tremendous skill. For example, back when I practiced astral projection a lot, I would always set an intention to go visit someone I knew so I could later check to see if what I saw them doing was valid. Every time I got out of my body, however, I totally forgot about my plans because I was so caught up in the experience. Much to my later frustration, I spent a number of sessions endlessly springing up to touch the ceiling because I was totally fascinated with the feeling of being in my etheric body.

The easiest way to connect with a friend or spirit in the astral is to simply to set that intention and ask Spirit or your higher self to fulfill it. If you don’t achieve your goal while consciously projecting, odds are good you will at least have some amazing “dreams” that involve the person you want to visit.

The astral is like a newly discovered continent: we don’t have great maps yet, so we have to be willing to experiment to discover its nature and establish routes and meeting places. I believe that thanks to trailblazers like you, in the future we’ll have many more answers about the nature of other planes of existence, as well as reliable, effective ways to get out of our bodies and explore other worlds.

Can She Help Grieving Mom Communicate with Departed Husband?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

My mom lost her second husband almost a year ago, and she is having a hard time with this. I’ve asked her to seek grief counseling, but she won’t do it. Last summer my stepfather came to me in a dream. This is not unusual – I’ve had many spirits come to me. In the dream, I was at the foot of my mom’s bed, talking to her as she cried over his death. He entered the room and I was so happy to see him. I said to him, “Ron help her! Help my mom!” He sat at her bedside and wrapped his arms around her. Then he turned to me and said, “I can’t. She won’t let me.” When I asked why I could perceive him and she couldn’t, he said it was because of her sadness. He then explained that he doesn’t understand such feelings, for they are no longer a part of him. He said he feels no sadness, regret, anger or grief – he only feels the love they still have. He wanted me to tell her he is with her every day. Every time I’m with my mom, she asks why she can’t feel him. I have no real answers for her aside from what he told me. Can I help her to be more open to him?
– Susan

Dear Susan:

This is mainly a problem of vibration. Sadly, it’s often the people who most long for contact with a loved one in Spirit who have the hardest time. This is because the emotions of grief are of a very low vibration, and in order to consciously connect with spirits, we have to reach high toward their vibratory range.

This is also why spirit contact is a relatively rare experience: when someone we love dies, we are grieving during the time when they are trying the hardest to connect with us. Once our grief has subsided, our loved ones know we’re okay and they move on. So what your stepfather told you in that dream is right on.

I’m betting your mom isn’t big on remembering her dreams, for if she was, she would have had a dream about your stepfather already. As you are very psychic, you have a naturally high vibration and ready access to your dreams. I’m sure your stepfather came to you because he’s been trying very hard to get through to your mom without success.

In order to connect while awake, we must have a high vibration, unmitigated desire, and the belief that this is possible. Then if we can stay open and trust what we perceive, it’s pretty simple to draw spirits close with feelings of our love for them.

Here are some suggestions for anyone who is grieving and longing for contact with a loved one in Spirit:

First you must give yourself some time to heal, for as you do, your vibration will naturally rise. When you are at peace with your loved one’s passing, you will be in a better position to purposefully connect with their spirit.

In the mean time, you can try for contact via your dreams. Of course, for this to work, you must be able to remember them, so begin to keep a dream journal and study various techniques for remembering and working with your dreams. Each night before you go to sleep, think of your loved one with affection and ask them to visit you while you’re dreaming. You can also ask your spirit guides and angels to facilitate this experience.

Ask yourself if you have any fear about the whole idea of spirit communication. Many people think they want this but deep down the idea of it unnerves them. That fear can both make us block our own success, and make our loved ones in Spirit hold back because they don’t want to scare us.

Further, ask yourself if there are any inner conflicts or issues you have yet to resolve about your relationship with the loved one in Spirit you are seeking. If you’re carrying any conscious or subconscious feelings of guilt, anger or any other lower emotion, those feelings can lower your vibration and prevent contact. For example, if you feel guilty because you weren’t there when your loved one crossed over, you could subconsciously “protect” yourself from facing your loved one until you resolve those feelings.

Beliefs are very important here. The more you expect to be able to connect with spirits, the more that will tend to happen. It is therefore wise to read about others’ success. It can also help to have someone else make contact. (For example, you might ask your stepfather to come to you in another dream and give you some information you could not have known. This evidence will both convince your mom that he’s really trying to come through, and show her that it’s possible to ask for a dream and have it happen.)

Understand that the spirit world is all around us, but it’s not tangible like this realm. If you expect to be able to perceive spirits with nothing but your physical senses, you will be disappointed. Some people even call the spirit world the “subtle realm.” Our thoughts and feelings already exist in this subtle realm, which means that spirits naturally come to us via thoughts and feelings. To manifest success with spirit communication, we must learn to trust that our thoughts and feelings about spirits are “real.”

When you feel you’re ready to make contact, turn on all your senses, sit quietly, and open up to a ny impressions you get. It’s rare that we sit quietly with all our senses turned on and then reach out to Spirit from a high vibration, and yet that’s all we really need to do.

As you reach out with your heart from a high vibration, watch for signs of your loved one’s presence. You may feel awash with love, sense their presence, have their face pop into your mind, hear their voice in your head, or have some memory you strongly associate with them seep through from the background of your mind. (For example, whenever my grandmother is near, I begin to notice memories of her house popping through from the background of my conscious awareness. These may be mental snapshots of the street she lived on or of rooms in her house.)

When something like this happens, let your heart swell with love for this person. Don’t focus on feelings of loss and how they aren’t here anymore, for that will bring your vibration down. Instead, remember happy memories. It may also help to physically smile, close your eyes, and turn your face upward, like you’re basking in the light of the sun. Breathe deeply and evenly, and send thoughts of love to this spirit. Tell them that you’re not afraid and ask them to draw near so you can psychically embrace them. This can lead to some very moving experiences.

Mind you, all of this is metaphysical, so it’s happening on an auric level. Sometimes you may feel things in your aura like tingling, or like someone is faintly stroking your hair. The hair may stand up on the back of your neck, or you may get goose bumps. Afterward, your head may still have some doubts, but your heart will know that something real has occurred.

In closing, while I applaud your desire to help your mom, we each have to find our own spiritual path through life, and there is only so much we can do for others. I want to reassure you that your mom is being guided and will heal in her own way and time.

Can Our Pets Reincarnate Or Greet Us in the Afterlife?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

My question is about our beloved animal friends. I have had a number of cats who died and then came to me in wonderful dreams. I’m wondering if you believe our animals return to us as new pets with new bodies, perhaps even as other species. (Can a cat come back as a dog?) Are our pets okay in the afterlife? Do they return to us? Will we see them again?
– Becky

Dear Becky:

The controversy over whether or not animals “have souls” and continue to exist beyond physical life is a long and involved one. Naturally, I don’t know the answers to all the deepest questions in the Universe, but I can explain what I’ve gleaned via spirit communication, as well as what I’ve learned from spiritual teachers who share the views I’ve adopted via my own direct experiences.

On the question of whether or not animals have souls, one answer strikes me as patently obvious: of course they have souls! To me the natural world is shining with life force energy – with soul. It is most obvious in sentient beings such as humans and the world’s more intelligent creatures, but it’s also easy to see in all wild animals, from the intelligent ape and devoted dog down to the simple worm.

Plants are also aglow with lovely life force energy. So often human beings presume that everything exists solely for our benefit here on Earth. When we hear report after report of near death experiences in which people found themselves in heavenly gardens, we presume that this beauty was created for our benefit, but maybe it’s just the heaven plants go to when they die.

Though it’s harder to perceive, I believe that rocks and minerals have soul energy as well. It’s my understanding that the mineral kingdom is essentially “alive,” though its vibration is so low and slow that we can’t perceive anything happening in this domain. (The more evolved a being, the faster its vibration, and the more it will act of its own volition. This is why rocks seem to just sit there, plants grow very predictably in one spot, animals seem to react instinctively, and humans (hopefully) act with conscious awareness).

I’m not sure about the soul of manmade objects – perhaps any energy they do possess comes from the people who created them, though I am assured by wise spiritual teachers that every atom in the Universe is alive with energy.

Further, we are in constant communication with every living being in the Universe whether we are consciously aware of it or not. Many people report having a strong psychic bond to their pets and relay amazing stories evidential of their pets’ psychic awareness. Animals are known for being psychically sensitive to the presence of ghosts and spirits, for example, and for being able to sense when someone they love is in danger or emotional pain even when that person is physically at a distance. As animals’ ability to telepathically communicate with us transcends the laws of physical space and time, it should also transcend physical death.

Plants are also constantly “communicating” with us on both a physical and metaphysical level. Physically, we have a symbiotic relationship with them; we breathe in their oxygen while they “breathe in” our carbon dioxide. On a metaphysical level, countless experiments have shown that we can communicate with plants and have them respond to us. This is why people talk to their plants. My plants even alert me when they need watering.

In my work as a medium, I have often connected with the departed pets of my clients, so I know that animals exist in the afterlife. On top of this, I can’t begin to tell you how many stories I’ve heard and read in which people described amazing spiritual experiences they had with the spirits of their pets.

These stories reveal that just like the spirits of people, pets often come back to let their human friends know they are okay, or to comfort them when they are upset. They also tend to show up when we’re in the dreamy state between awake and asleep, which is a common time for us to be receptive to visits from spirits.

Many people with a beloved pet cat on the other side have felt the cat moving around their legs on their beds at night, just as they used to do when they were alive. Dog owners often feel the presence of their dogs by their sides. This can be so subtle and familiar that our conscious minds never even notice it until one day it hits us: we have been feeling the presence our pet as though the pet is still there, yet the pet died some time ago.

A number of people who have had near death experiences reported that they were greeted by beloved pets in Spirit when they reached the end of that tunnel of light. This makes perfect sense to me. So often our pets are delighted to welcome us home, so I can only imagine how thrilled they’d be to welcome us HOME.

It’s my understanding that all living creatures are caught up in the cycle of reincarnation because this is the natural process of evolution. Just as water evaporates, grows heavy in the clouds, and then it rains and the process starts all over again, living creatures are ever incarnating, dying, and being reborn again.

Life depends on the evolution and expansion of the Universe. We can see evidence of this in our own lives; just as we learn and grow and then move on to more sophisticated lessons, so it is with life forms. While we may have been a “lower” life form in a prior incarnation, we would not return to that existence once we had evolved beyond it. Before becoming individualized, the energy of each person passed through the mineral, plant and animal kingdoms, and when we reach a certain point, we will evolve beyond incarnation in physical form.

Since humans are at the top of the evolutionary chain here on Earth, it makes sense that as animals evolve, they are drawn toward humans. These are the animals that become our pets. Many pets seem nearly human in nature because they ARE. By living within a human family, they learn a great deal about the human experience and evolve very quickly via lessons about love, devotion, patience, etc.

Wild animals don’t need to be patient – they just do what they want, when they want to do it. With pets that are “trained,” however, one sees a far more sophisticated approach to life. For example, a pet may demonstrate great patience and self-restraint when a small child pulls its tail.

Our evolved pets aside, most animals do not have a conscious existence in the afterlife. Your average wood chuck, for example, may simple die and after a brief period of unconscious rest in the astral, emerge again in physical form, perhaps as a baby woodchuck, or if he was very good in his last life, a beaver or a hedgehog. (Just kidding – everyone knows that wood chucks are far more enlightened than beavers.)

As animals evolve toward the human end of the spectrum, however, they spend more time having conscious experiences in the non-physical, including romps in what we may call “heaven,” where they may greet us when we cross over. Some animals that are very attached to their owners may also remain earthbound for a while after they cross over, just like some people do. These are the pets that can be felt, glimpsed or heard in spirit form after they have died.

When animals reincarnate, they often return to the same owners, for they are naturally drawn to them out of mutual desire. The force that makes this happen is the one energy that death can’t make a dent in: Love. Just as with people, mutual love draws us to beings on the other side and motivates us to incarnate into each other’s lives over and over again. So if you love some departed being very deeply, you can trust that you will one day be reunited.

The Opposite of Grief: Reuniting with Someone from a Past Life

Dear Soul Arcanum:

My husband of six years passed away two years ago after a long battle with cancer. I have been blessed with sensing his presence at times, and with truly believing he is free from suffering and I will see him again someday. Nevertheless, I can’t seem to move on. Maybe I’m just not sure where to go from here. I’m in my mid-thirties, we had no children together, and I have a satisfying career. Despite all the good things in my life, it feels like I’ve already had the best love had to offer me. I would appreciate any advice you could give me.
– Brenda

Dear Brenda:

I’d like to share a personal experience with you.

When I was a young woman, my first love died very suddenly. There are many amazing spiritual stories surrounding that event, but there is one in particular that is relevant here.

A few days after Todd died, I awoke in the middle of the night in a panic. I was burning up with heat and gasping for breath, and as I opened my eyes, I could see the room was filled with smoke. Assuming the house was on fire, and I catapulted out of bed and flew across the hall, where I pounded on my parents’ door yelling, “Fire! Fire!”

My father was at the door in a flash with a fire extinguisher in his hand, shouting, “Where? Where?” As I turned and looked back into my room, the smoke was gone. There was nothing there. Speechless, I mumbled something like, “It was there, I swear…”

For three nights in a row I was awakened the same way. The second night I actually repeated my frantic scramble for help. (My father did NOT make it to the door nearly as quickly that time). The third night I forced myself to sit still in bed, and as I did so, the smoke dissipated before my eyes.

Many years later, I am now married to the love of my life. I don’t have room here to go into all the incredible details of how we found each other, but it was definitely preordained. The important thing to note is that I have found even greater love than I lost long ago – and with a firefighter. It took me nearly 20 years to figure out those “fire” experiences in the night, but I now believe that Todd was trying to give me a sign that I would find true love again, and how it would come to me.

When our grief over someone’s passing has subsided but we still feel empty, I believe we are wise to focus on just what Todd was trying to shift my attention to: all the people we have yet to meet whom we already love so well. We must remember that just as death is inevitable, life is ever leading us back to people we have loved in other lives. The cure for your emptiness is deciding to reconnect with these kindred spirits.

Also, while I believe that grief is totally natural, I think we have developed some unhealthy ways of dealing with it. Some people, for example, assume that the devastation they feel when someone dies must indicate that death is indeed a horrible and final end.

As I see it, grief is a natural response to the end of anything we have loved well. It’s normal to be sad when we are leaving some person, place or era that has held a lot of happiness for us. Ironically, it’s my understanding that many souls feel some grief about leaving the spirit world to incarnate here on Earth, which makes our grief over doing the reverse seem a bit overblown. It’s focusing on the past that causes us pain; at some point, it only makes sense to shift our attention to all the possibilities on the horizon.

Every time someone we love departs our experience, it creates room in our lives for someone else who is just as special. Too often people feel that they are somehow betraying a departed loved one by loving someone else. I say that by holding themselves back from new love, they may betray someone they have loved just as deeply in another life, whom they have yet to meet again in this one. Just think: what if you had met someone else prior to meeting your husband, and when that person died, you closed yourself off from new love?

Romance aside, there are many people you have loved in other lives who are waiting to love you again, and I think you owe it to all of those loved ones to stay open to creating new happiness with them. For example, I have done readings for parents who had lost a child, and to whom that same soul had already returned in the form a new baby. It often takes such parents years to recognize the departed child in the younger sibling. Eventually when the child begins to talk, however, they will do things or say things evidential of their true identity. Some children will even refer to the “last time” they were here, before they died in some manner, when they were so and so, etc. Then those parents realize that they have spent years grieving for a child who was sitting right beside them!

I have similarly read for number of widows and widowers who say that they will never fall in love again, and been shown an even greater love for them in the future. This is always a love that already exists, and usually it is with someone they have loved even more deeply and truly than the person they say they will never get over. I think it’s exciting to know that for each one of us, there are many people out there whom we have been missing on an unconscious level and have yet to meet up with again in this lifetime.

While big reunions between souls are often destined to happen at certain junctures, there are some things you can do to reconnect with as many people you’ve loved in other lives as possible. Here are a few:

  • Act on your impulses to go certain places and speak to certain people.
  • Stay open to meeting new people and letting them get close to you.
  • Call or contact people who frequently come to mind, for often these are relationships you are being guided to pursue.
  • Accept invitations from strangers you feel drawn to.
  • Honor your hunches and feelings about seemingly unrelated matters, such as which job you will take and where you will live. Often we are led to meet important people through such decisions.

Here are a few signs that you’re in the presence of someone you have loved before:

  • You have a very strange feeling, or it seems like time stands still when you first meet them.
  • They seem vaguely familiar or you feel unusually drawn to them.
  • The way you meet is surrounded by lots of synchronicity, like you were guided or destined to find each other.
  • You can see certain turning points or incidents in the past that are strongly connected to this meeting or to this person. For example, my ex-husband said that for his entire life, he’d had a picture in his mind of his “ideal girl.” He thought this was just a fantasy until he met me and discovered that the girl with that face actually existed.
  • Other people in your life are strongly connected to someone you feel an instant sense of kinship with. For example, if you have a strong feeling of familiarity upon meeting your brother’s fiance, it could mean that you’re GOING to know her in the future, but it could also mean you’ve known and loved her in another life. Since we reincarnate in soul groups, it’s common for there to be strong connections between your loved ones.
  • This relationship seems to have a life of its own – it just happens.

As I see it, my friend, the future is rich with exciting opportunities to love again. Please do remember that the karmic bond you feel to people from past lives is no more special just because it began in another time and place. As a very wise song goes, if you can’t be with the one you love, then love the one you’re with. You could create the most magnificent relationship EVER with someone you meet for the first time today.

How Important Is It to Save a Life?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

Recently there was much in the news about the death of David Sharp and the near death of another hiker to the Mt. Everest Summit. David Sharp was returning from the summit when he ran out of oxygen. Forty hikers went past him that day but only one stopped: Inglis, a double amputee who was determined to be the first amputee to make it to the summit of Mt. Everest. He determined that David was so far gone that it was not worth using any of his oxygen to revive him; he also really wanted to achieve his own goal. Sir Edmund Hillary has denounced this attitude by stating it is more important to help someone survive than to reach the summit. The blogs have been full of folks agreeing with Sir Edmund Hillary, or stating that anyone who chooses to reach Mt. Everest’s summit does so at their own risk, and it is not fair to ask or assume others will help you out when all are under extreme survival conditions. To me there seems to be an obvious lack of humanity, compassion and morality here. Why? Are we a doomed race? I would like to know your spiritual view on this matter. Should we not do all we can to save a life?
– Betsy

Dear Betsy:

This controversy illuminates why life in the physical is such a powerful spiritual learning experience, for it is just this sort of event that makes everyone question the basic nature of right and wrong.

Of course, it’s one thing to ponder such decisions from the comfort of our living rooms, and another to be faced with them in reality. Until we are in such a situation, we do not truly know what we would do. Often those who believe they would be heroic are disappointed in themselves, and those who haven’t given such matters much thought rise to the occasion.

I believe that a “spiritual” view will naturally be a bit lighter than a physically oriented perspective. Instead of condemnation of anyone in particular, a spiritual view will encompass compassion for all parties. It will also reflect the truth that we are more than physical beings – that each body is just a temporary vehicle for exploring and experiencing life on earth. Someone coming from a spiritual perspective will certainly cherish life but at the same time view death as a natural transition into a new state of being.

There are lots of factors that may influence how an individual may feel about death at any given time. People of great faith may view the shedding of a disabled or diseased body as a blessing. Even deeply spiritual people, however, can have a strong attachment to survival when they believe they are needed here on Earth. Someone who isn’t so spiritual or who doesn’t believe in life after death would of course tend to view the loss of physical life as a tragedy, and thus believe that we should go to every effort possible to prolong it. So as we contemplate others’ moral decisions, we must remember that each one of us has different views and needs, largely because each one of us is learning what we need to learn.

As for this particular situation, I believe that even if David were too far gone to survive physically, I would have stopped and prayed with him or done whatever I could to comfort his soul – but then, I’m a minister. It would never occur to me that reaching the top of some mountain could be more important than showing a dying man compassion. Then again, I would never try to reach the top of Everest anyway – not unless you told me there was an intergalactic angel convention at the summit – in which case you’d better stand back!

Which brings me to my next point: people who try to climb Everest are an extreme lot. They trek to the summit BECAUSE it is perilous. Death strikes frequently on Everest’s frozen slopes; in fact, David Sharp was the seventh person to die this year alone. If it were not so risky, these climbers would be somewhere else, doing something more dangerous.

I researched this story, and as it turns out, David Sharp was sorely ill-equipped and unprepared. Further, Inglis, the double amputee you mentioned, had such bad frostbite on his hands that his fingertips will probably have to be removed; he also became a double amputee when his lower extremities were severely frostbitten during a prior expedition in 1982. Despite losing his legs to Everest years ago, he still keeps climbing! It seems to me that these climbers can in no way be said to represent the general spiritual state of humanity – they’re nuts, and probably proud of it. I don’t think we can view the whole world as gone bad based on the choices of a small group of crazy people who are obsessed with an extreme goal.

I also read that another climber, Dawas, did all he could to try to save David. David was near the summit and unable to help himself in any way when Dawas found him. Dawas radioed for help, gave David oxygen, spent an hour trying to get David to stand and move, and when nothing worked, he finally decided he had to leave him – and he did so crying all the while. Further, despite his proximity to the top, he did not summit the mountain himself because he’d given his oxygen to David. If I’m going to take any example of the state of humanity from this story, I think I will focus on the selfless compassion of Dawas.

Even David Sharp’s mother said that her son responsible for his own survival, and she does not blame other climbers for failing to save him. If I did something like try to climb Everest, I too would do it with full understanding of how dangerous this undertaking was, and I would not expect anyone else to risk their lives or sacrifice their greatest dream in order to help me. It is one thing to be doing something ordinary and end up in a pickle that requires you to be rescued, and quite another to undertake a dangerous adventure because it gives you a thrill, and then expect others to risk their lives racing to your aid when you get in a bind – ESPECIALLY if you have failed to plan and prepare adequately.

There are many wonderful souls in the world, and there are many who have yet to evolve into active care and compassion for others. Don’t let those younger souls get you down. They’re still learning what they need to learn, just as we are still learning what we need to learn. Allowing events that are so appalling they are newsworthy to color your general view of humanity is like deciding the whole world is populated by short, chubby people based on your visits to a preschool classroom!

I do understand how you feel, however. When one reaches a certain level of spiritual development, it can feel like we’re the only grownup in a crowded party full of teenagers. When disillusionment or indignation creep in, we must humbly remember that we were once in others’ spiritual shoes. No doubt there are many people far more enlightened than we are who would view our own decisions as spiritually sophomoric.

The bottom line is that there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to big moral decisions. That’s why we must learn how to think for ourselves, listen within for guidance, act on the truth we find in our own hearts, and trust that others will do the same. Humanity has been shown the greatest respect in the gift of our free will. If God trusts us to choose for ourselves and to learn the “hard way” when necessary, we are wise to strive to emulate this faith in human nature by allowing others to choose for themselves as well.

Of course, we can also learn from others’ experiences – which is just what you are trying to do – and in this way, we can turn life’s tragedies into opportunities to cultivate greater personal wisdom.

May you find something of meaning and value in all of your experiences!

Is It Harder to Communicate with the Spirits of Suicides?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

Last September my husband took his own life. I am spiritually evolved in many ways, but have questioned my beliefs about death since the day he died. I have been able to communicate with souls that have passed over for family members here, such as my husband’s grandfather, but I’m not sure if I’ve been able to reach my husband because I wonder if I want so badly to have him with me that I’m imagining things. What do you think? Also, how does suicide affect spirit communication? I’m unsure what I believe anymore. Thank you very much for your time. Namaste!
– Chelle

Dear Chelle:

My heart goes out to you. I can only imagine how hard it must be to heal from a loss of this nature. Before I explore general ideas, I want to tell you that I feel that your husband is trying hard to connect with you, and it is only your own pain and doubt that is keeping these experiences from being more real and fulfilling for you.

As I’ve explained a number of times, having a strong desire to connect with a certain spirit is very powerful, but if we pressure ourselves to produce, it may just hinder us. This is why I may bring through great evidence from spirits for strangers, but will have a harder time bringing through loved ones for people I know. When I feel I “must” succeed, I know I tend to stretch for evidential details more, which causes me to question everything I perceive more stringently. I also expect more of myself and my own loved ones in Spirit than I do of strangers, and this bogs the whole spirit communication process down.

It can be very confusing, disappointing, and even disillusioning to receive clear, evidential communication from a casual acquaintance in Spirit, and not be able to connect with your own spouse, parent or child. In such cases, however, we are almost always the source of whatever is preventing successful interaction. Our vibration may be too low due to grief, we may be too invested in making a connection, or we may doubt everything we perceive both because messages from those we were very close to tend to be more subtle, and because we know we are prone to wishful thinking.

While most people who are grieving tend to see even the smallest coincidences as signs from a loved one in Spirit, lots of us go too far the other way, and refuse to accept as valid anything less than a full blown miracle. We must remember that EVERYTHING we experience in life is ultimately a result of “wishful thinking,” and trust the power of our desire as much as we do the discernment of our intellects.

In light of all of this, I encourage you to trust that the experiences you’re having are real and valid. By trusting them, you will be able to cultivate clearer, more validating experiences with your husband, who probably just wants you to understand why he did what he did and forgive him.

As for suicides in general, and how this act may affect spirit communication, it all depends on that person’s motivation for taking their own life, for that will greatly affect where they end up on the other side. If you think about it, there are what we might call “degrees” of suicide.

For example, it seems to me that a soldier who throws himself on a grenade to save his comrades is way ahead of your average American couch potato, who is slowly killing himself with junk food, inactivity and cigarettes. The first man is demonstrating great reverence for the gift of life by sacrificing himself in order that a number of others may go on living, while the second man is demonstrating a profound lack of appreciation for his physical existence. Given all the “suicide” possibilities we might imagine in between, it’s easy to see how each individual’s motivations would greatly affect what happens when they get to the afterlife.

Further, when we cross over, how we have lived will be far more important than how we have died. A person’s general nature will greatly affect their ability to reach through from Spirit, regardless of how they passed. Someone who was highly conscious, intelligent, sane, positive, grateful, kind and spiritual in life will tend to be easy to communicate with on the other side. It’s like we each carry our own torch into the afterlife in the form of our spirits. If we are radiant with light, we can see far and are empowered to do much more than if we are stumbling through darkness.

People who were unconscious, ignorant, insane, negative, ungrateful, selfish, and cynical or disbelieving while alive will be much harder to communicate with when they cross into Spirit, as they will be in dark, murky territory. If their lights are very dim, they can’t see to do much. Some even reincarnate without regaining consciousness in the afterlife.

As we continue on in death much as we were in life, two of the most rewarding and powerful traits we can cultivate are a strong, positive belief in Spirit and knowledge of spiritual principles. The more we focus upon and center our lives on higher spiritual values, the lighter and freer we’ll be in the spirit realm.

Now, when most of us hear the word suicide, we don’t think of military heroes or couch potatoes, of course: we think of someone who was of sound body and mind who became depressed and lost hope of ever turning their lives around. As these people were in mental and emotional hell while living, they tend to continue to be in mental and emotional hell when they cross over. Contrary to some religious teachings, this suffering is not a punishment, but arises from natural spiritual law. It is no more imposed upon them than the hell they created for themselves while alive.

These sorts of spirits tend to be as hard to get through to in the afterlife as they were when they were living, at least until they attain a higher state of mind. Such spirits often become earthbound, and continue to wander in the inner darkness and confusion that led them to take their lives in the first place. The lessons they were supposed to learn while living are still on their metaphorical “to-do” lists, but they have no clear way to complete those tasks, and thus we might say they have “unfinished business.” They do not remain like this forever, of course. When they realize how precious life is, they begin to “see the light.”

It takes a lot of focus and energy for any spirit to communicate inter-dimensionally. While it does happen, someone who couldn’t summon the will to live is unlikely to pull that sort of personal power together. Sometimes, however, suicides are shocked to find they still exist, and realize that killing themselves just made things worse. They may then want nothing more than to tell us they are sorry and urge us not to follow in their footsteps. When they witness how much pain they’ve caused those they love, they may be overwhelmed with remorse, and go to great lengths to seek forgiveness. As we pray for them and send them love, we bathe them in light, which can help them quickly rise in vibration and understanding, and move on to higher planes.

Again, I feel that your husband is not lost on the other side, but is definitely trying to reach you. Keep praying for him and visualize him being flooded by divine light. It will help him to heal, which will empower him to connect with you in a more fulfilling way. I know it’s hard and you have your own healing to work through, but try to have compassion for how much he must have been suffering to take his own life, and offer him your forgiveness if you can.

I’m sending you prayers for love and healing, my friend.

Baptism: Is it Important?

Copyright Soul Arcanum LLC. All rights reserved. :)

Dear Soul Arcanum:

I had a strict Catholic upbringing, and unfortunately, this really put me off on the Catholic Church. I am very spiritual, however – more so than most of the people I attended church with when I was growing up. Here’s my dilemma: I’m now pregnant with my first child, and my parents expect me to have my baby baptized. When I hesitated, my mother freaked out and said that my baby will never get into heaven if he’s not baptized. I feel sort of silly for admitting this, but I’m starting to doubt myself. I sure wouldn’t want my child to suffer because his mother was deluded! Do you think that being baptized is important in any way? Thank you!
– Laura

Dear Laura:

I understand your dilemma. On one hand, studying the origins of baptism is really eye-opening. On the other, I see great power and value in spiritual rituals in general, and as a mother myself, I know how intensely protective you must feel.

For those who aren’t familiar, baptism is a Christian ritual of spiritual cleansing that is symbolic of “rebirth.” According to the Catholic Church, baptism is the most important sacrament because it is what initiates us into a spiritual life.

Here’s what most Catholics don’t know: like so many Christian traditions, baptism has its origins in ancient pagan initiation rites. The use of water for cleansing one’s body and soul can be traced back to the beginning of recorded history. In fact, early Christians never baptized infants, for the act of baptism was supposed to reflect a conscious, willing dedication to Christ. Baptizing infants was part of pagan initiation into mystery school traditions, and was only incorporated into Christian practices relatively recently.

Like your mom, many Catholics believe that to enter the kingdom of heaven, we must be “born again of water and the Holy Ghost.” While being “born again” may simply be symbolic of turning over a new spiritual leaf, when we examine this idea in relationship to the tradition of baptism, one begins to wonder if perhaps baptism was originally designed to induce the profound spiritual awakening of a near death experience.

It seems that initially, baptism involved much more than the sprinkling of water on a person’s head. One was fully immersed in a body of water by the officiant; in fact, early writings about baptism include many references to drowning! The original practice may have involved holding someone under water until they surrendered with “faith” in God – in other words, nearly drowned.

Such an experience would alter one’s consciousness and perhaps induce mystical experiences. As NDE’s tend to spiritually awaken people like nothing else, we could say that being baptized was a “rebirth” both because one emerged from the experience a new person, and because one literally came back from death.

Throughout history, religious mystery schools have put seekers through extremely challenging physical initiations. If one survived these ordeals, they were assumed to be profoundly changed afterward. Perhaps our modern tradition of baptism is just a shadow of what was once a much more intense and mystical experience. If early on, a number of people drowned through baptism, it makes sense that as Christianity spread, the process would have grown less daunting and more acceptable. Thus we end up with a symbolic “rebirth” as opposed to a literal return to life.

Further, baptism is often referred to as being “reborn into the light,” which I think lends more credence to this theory, for a classic element of the near death experience is a vision of divine “light” that is beyond description in power and beauty.

I also think it’s fascinating that early baptisms were conducted in rivers, for researchers into the astral dimension like Robert Bruce have determined that a most effective means of cleansing one’s aura of negative astral entities is to cross running water. Perhaps baptism was designed to help people shed all the negativity they had picked up in their auras in order to make a fresh spiritual start. It would make sense to do this only when they were prepared to walk a conscious spiritual path from then on, otherwise, it’d be like taking a bath and then going right back out to play in the dirt.

On the other hand, water itself isn’t considered essential to the baptism process:

For John indeed baptized with water: but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost… (Acts, 1:5)

Like other spiritual rituals, baptism is a symbolic act signifying spiritual awakening and devotion to a spiritual path. Given natural spiritual laws like karma, living what we might call a “spiritual life” will indeed bring us great freedom and blessings in the future, including the afterlife. Even if the ritual of baptism isn’t essential to our future well-being, consciously choosing to live a “good” (spiritual) life is incredibly powerful.

Further, I do believe we can make quantum leaps in clearing karma by devoting ourselves to right action with all our hearts and souls. Thus being “born again,” baptized, having a spiritual awakening or choosing to devote ourselves to a spiritual path may indeed make a huge difference in terms of our destiny.

I also believe that being part of a religious community can bring many blessings, both in ways we can directly experience and in subtler ways as well. It doesn’t much matter which religion we embrace, so long as its basic aims are divine love, peace, and sincere good will toward others. When we are initiated into a religious or spiritual community, we gain the exponential power of unity. This blankets us with an astral cloak of positive belief and kinship with other seekers. Like teenagers who are surrounded with “good influences,” we gain support for staying out of spiritual trouble and embodying our highest values.

Also, during a baptism ceremony, the gathered family and friends pray for that individual to be protected by God, and prayer is powerful! Those who are especially devoted to the individual being baptized (such as the godmother or godfather) also promise to help them along their spiritual path through life. Though as a Spiritualist minister I am far from being Catholic, I was happy to become my nephew’s godmother a few years ago, for I’m certainly in harmony with helping people find their spiritual way through life.

Though fundamentalists would disagree with me on this (amongst many other things!), I don’t feel the act of baptism itself is what matters; what matters is the energy, intention and meaning behind it. When people pray together with sincere hearts for another’s good, a rich feeling lifts our spirits. If we undertake ceremonies like baptism with sincerity, they can hold great meaning and value.

Having your child baptized in church will certainly not HURT him, and it would show respect and honor for your parents. If you can get past the details you find offensive and sincerely pray for your child to enjoy a spiritual path of divine love and understanding, I think it could be a wonderful way to bless him and welcome him to the world.
