Dear Soul Arcanum:

For the past five years I have been blessed with visions and cursed with chaos. I understand that a spiritual seeker will meet many challenges, but the last vision I had has thrown me totally off balance. I saw myself working upon land I believe will be my own – my husband and I are currently looking to purchase land in Arizona. In this vision I felt happy and at one with the world. Then I suddenly turned to my husband. He was backlit by sunlight, thus putting his face in shadow. As he slowly turned from shadow, I was stunned to see this soul mate standing next to me was not my husband at all, but a male friend. I was so shocked I almost fell over and have been able to think of nothing else since. I am a happily married woman and don’t understand why I would see this vision. I have spent the last two weeks doing a life review, trying to understand why my mind would substitute someone else in this otherwise happy vision. Please help, as I am driving myself nuts trying to figure this out. Thanks!

Dear A.:

I see two different issues here. The one I believe you are really asking about is why you might see this other man beside you as your partner if this is not going to come true. Why would that happen, and what might it mean?

Instead of a prophetic glimpse of the future, perhaps this vision was a message from Spirit. Spirit could be telling you that the key to finding your “home” in this world – whether literal or figurative – will somehow involve the friend in this vision. If it is literal, then perhaps your friend will play a role in you acquiring that land in Arizona. Perhaps he will say something or know something or someone that proves vital to you getting what you want.

If it is figurative, then perhaps Spirit is telling you that this friend has something you are looking for in your quest for happiness. It may come to you through the actual gift of words or other blessings, or it may come through you simply reflecting on this friend: on who he is, what he believes, what he does, etc.

This vision could be a sign that this friend of yours is a “soul mate.” We don’t have just one you know: a soul mate is anyone we’ve loved well in another life. It doesn’t have to be romantic. This experience could simply be you recognizing at a conscious level that you share a deeper spiritual connection to him than you realized.

The possibilities are endless. When you have a vision like this, especially one that grips you and won’t let go like this one did, it’s important to meditate on it and ask Spirit to reveal its meaning for you.

If this was a message from Spirit and you misinterpreted it as an actual vision of the future, I can see how it would be unnerving. I encourage you to back way up to before you had an emotional reaction to it, and try to see what Spirit was really trying to tell you. If you can get visions like this, believe me – you can successfully ask Spirit for greater clarity.

The second issue in your question involves figuring out what we should do when we are shown a vision of our own future that is shocking to us. I had an experience like this when I was fairly new to conscious communication with Spirit, and it was very unsettling.

At the time, I had been married for about seven years and had two young children. I was content with my life and my marriage all in all. Then one day as I was driving home in my car, I got a “news flash” from Spirit. I didn’t hear this with my physical ears, yet it still came from a source outside of myself. (Usually when I communicate with Spirit, information comes through my own mind. This time, however, the voice that spoke to me seemed more “outside” of myself.) I don’t know if this experience can be adequately conveyed in words, but I’ll do my best.

While driving, I suddenly found myself in an altered state of consciousness and “in dialogue” with an intelligence beyond myself. It basically said to me, Within five years time, you will no longer be living where you are living. You will be living in a different place, with a different man. I then sensed that the man in question was living in a nearby city, and I felt people around him – his children. I felt many key events that were going to happen, but I felt them all at once, as a whole. I couldn’t distinguish them; I was just left with the feeling of the life that would be mine. I didn’t know how it would happen, but I knew I would be living in that nearby city, that the current home I was heading toward would not be my home for long.

You could have knocked me over with a feather. I had no intention of ending my marriage, and could not imagine how this would come to be. I wondered if my husband would die, but that didn’t feel true. I wasn’t given any more information – just left with this deep knowing that this would come to pass. Everything in that “message” or vision did indeed happen, despite the fact that none of it could be seen on the horizon at the time.

At the time of this experience, I didn’t know what to do with this information. As I was in shock, I even shared it with my husband, who warned me not to let it become a self-fulfilling prophecy. That sounded like wise advice, so I decided I would not let this experience influence me in any particular direction. Instead, I would keep it in the back of my mind, and should it actually come true, let it comfort me with the knowledge that everything that happened was at least part of some higher plan.

I have since learned that this is usually the whole point behind surprising visions of our own future: they allow us to begin preparing ourselves emotionally for the possibilities they reveal. More importantly, they affirm that there is a benevolent higher plan.

To be at peace, we must find faith that if something is indeed destined, it will happen for a good reason whether we believe it will or not, and whether we want it to or not. We must also trust that someday we will be okay with it, and see how everything worked out for the best. I know that can be very hard when we’re seeing a future that contradicts our established hopes, but every time we have a vision of the future that does come true, we naturally develop a bit more trust in this higher plan. Then when we have further similar experiences, we can relax and trust that one way or another, everything will work out just fine.

We’re also wise to trust that even our visions come to us for a good reason, whether we can understand them at the time or not. This is profoundly comforting if you really think about it. When experience proves to us that ultimately everything works out and there is a force that is able to accurately reveal the future to us, we gain the faith and wisdom to surrender our fear-driven control issues and trust in this “higher power.”

I’m NOT saying that your vision indicates that your husband will not be with you in the future. I’m just suggesting that IF that does happen, all will ultimately be fine. I feel nothing ominous here. Instead, I see that your interpretation of this experience has created a smokescreen of fear and confusion. To move past this anxiety and into new clarity, you’ll have to rise above your fear into the high vibration essential to conscious communication with Spirit.

Thus I recommend you meditate, relax, and think happy thoughts, THEN ask Spirit for new insights into this matter. I trust you’ll not only be led to peace and clarity, but also new confidence in your own ability to consciously ask for and receive Divine guidance.
